Broncos vs. Browns: Second Half Live Blog

September 20th, 2009 - 3:56pm by Chris Gentilviso

Q3 - 15:00: The Broncos continue to hold Joshua Cribbs’ damage on returns to a minimum. Josh Barrett and Darrell Reid drag him down after a 19-yard return. The Browns will start at their own 23-yard line.

Q3 - 13:34: The Broncos defense puts the Browns in an early hole. The pocket collapses on Brady Quinn on first down and Elvis Dumervil picks up a 2-yard sack. After a stop on the run by Ryan McBean on second down, Cribbs makes the catch on third down. He headed upfield, but Dumervil punched the ball loose. Brian Dawkins recovers the fumble, and the Broncos have excellent field position, starting the half at the Browns 37-yard line.

Q3 - 12:19: A false start penalty on Daniel Graham backs the Broncos up five yards. Out of the pocket, Orton erases the penalty, finding Brandon Marshall for a six-yard gain. With Moreno as the lone setback, Orton dupes the defense with an end around to Marshall for 14 yards and a first down.

Q3 - 10:43: After no gain by Moreno on first down and a short gain by Graham in the flat, Orton and the offense faces third and 7 at the edge of the red zone. With three receivers and Moreno in the backfield, Orton found Stokley open on a crossing route. Reliable with five catches in the first half, Stokley dropped the pass, setting up fourth down.

Q3 - 10:39: Prater moves on from his first-half miss, connecting from 38 yards out to extend the Broncos’ lead. Broncos 13, Browns 6

Q3 - 10:35: Taking the kickoff from the edge of the goal line, Cribbs runs out of room quickly, as Darrell Reid grabs him by the ankles. The Browns will start their second-half offense at their own 20-yard line.

Q3 - 10:03: The crowd noises picks up, but it doesn’t upset Quinn and the offense. Braylon Edwards hurdles high over Champ Bailey, picking up 23 yards on first down.

Q3 - 8:25: The combination of Wesley Woodyard and Brian Dawkins makes stops on two runs, placing the Browns in a 3rd and 4 from midfield. Mike Furrey got separation from Dawkins over the middle of the field, but the ball went off his fingertips.

Q3 - 8:16: Dave Zastudil executes a high hanging punt, and rookie Alphonso Smith signals for the fair catch at his own 12-yard line. That’s where the Broncos will take over.

Q3 - 7:14: After a short gain by Correll Buckhalter on first down, Knowshon Moreno takes the carry off left tackle. Shaun Rogers’ face-mask penalty turns a 3-yard gain into an 18-yard gain, giving the Broncos a first down at their own 32-yard line.

Q3 - 6:15: Out of the shotgun, Orton finds Moreno for his first reception of the game - 11 yards and another Broncos first down. Moreno keeps his legs churning, taking the next carry for two yards before Buckhalter comes back in the game. Moreno has 43 all-purpose yards at this point.

Q3 - 4:30: Flushed out of the pocket on a 3rd and 6, Orton finds Marshall for his longest reception of the game. The catch goes for 25 yards, and propels the Broncos into Browns territory at the 28-yard line.

Q3 - 3:17: After a short gain by Moreno, Orton is forced to scramble again and throw the ball away. With third and long from the 27-yard line, Orton completes to Jabar Gaffney. He makes an inside move to try and reach the chains, but he is a yard short of the marker.

Q3 - 2:49: Prater’s fourth field goal attempt of the game, a 37-yard try, sails wide left. He missed one in the same direction late in the first half. The Browns take over at their own 27-yard line, trailing 13-6.

Q3 - 1:18: With pressure from Andre’ Goodman on a cornerback blitz, Quinn finds Braylon Edwards for 16 yards and a first down. Quinn goes right back to Edwards on the next play, finding him for 13 yards. The ball popped loose, but he was ruled down by contact. Edwards leads the Browns with six catches for 92 yards on the afternoon.

Q3 - 1:03: The Broncos defense forces three straight incompletions from Quinn, capped by a pass breakup from Dumervil on third down. Too far out of field goal range, Zastudil’s punt is returned by Alphonso Smith out to the 18-yard line. The 10-yard return sets the Broncos up at that spot.

Q3 - 0:00: After being met head on by Eric Barton on first down for no gain, Orton went back to Moreno on a swing pass out of the backfield. He picks up his second 11-yard catch of the game, closing out the third quarter with a first down. The Broncos will start the fourth quarter at their own 29-yard line.

FOURTH QUARTER

Q4 - 13:50: After a short gain by Buckhalter on the ground, Orton went back to him on a perfectly-executed screen pass. After solid blocks by Chris Kuper and Casey Wiegmann, the play was called back via a holding call on Brandon Marshall. The Broncos re-start with 1st and 10 on their own 47-line, after a 15 yard gain with the penalty.

Q4 - 12:22: Orton continues to find his rhythm, finding Gaffney on an out route. The veteran makes an inside move on Browns CB Brandon McDonald, barreling down to the Browns’ 2-yard line. The 49-yard pass play sets up 1st and goal from that spot, and the Broncos use their first timeout of the half.

Q4 - 12:18: With Russ Hochstein lined up as a fullback, Peyton Hillis follows him into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run. Prater tacks on the extra point, extending the Broncos’ lead to two touchdowns. Broncos 20, Browns 6

Q4 - 12:17: Joshua Cribbs is again neutralized by Prater on the kickoff, taking a knee three yards deep in the end zone. Cleveland will start from its own 20-yard line.

Q4 - 10:24: The Browns were no match for the Broncos on this drive. Andra Davis started off the stand, stopping Harrison for his team-leading eighth tackle of the game. That flustered the Browns’ line into a false start on the ensuing play, setting up second and long. Dumervil backed the Browns into an even bigger hole, picking up his second sack of the half for nine yards. Facing 3rd and 22 from their own 8-yard line, Dumervil was at it again with another sack, pinning the Browns at their own 2-yard line on the punt.

Q4 - 9:55: Smith had running room on the return, but a holding penalty by Jarvis Moss backs the Broncos up to their own 33-yard line. That’s where they’ll take over.

Q4 - 8:24: Holding a commanding lead, the Broncos turned to the ground game. Moreno picked up five yards on first down. He got stronger on second down, turning in his longest carry of the game. The 17-yard sprint moved the Broncos into Browns territory, with a first down at the 45-yard line. Cleveland’s defense looked exasperated on the ensuing play and before they could blink, another score was on the board. Buckhalter broke by an army of defenders, barreling into the end zone for the 45-yard touchdown run. Prater’s extra point is good. Broncos 27, Browns 6

Q4 - 8:22: Cribbs was left stranded on the kickoff again, with Prater’s boot sailing deep into the end zone. The touchback has the Browns starting at their own 20-yard line.

Q4 - 6:52: Quinn finds Cribbs on a pair of short routes, setting up third and inches. The pocket quickly collapsed on Quinn and Dumervil was the reason. His fourth sack of the game marks a new career high for the fourth-year outside linebacker, and ties a franchise record set by Simon Fletcher against the Chargers on Nov. 11, 1990. Zastudil’s punt is returned by Smith to his own 30-yard line. The Broncos take over from that spot.

Q4 - 5:32: Holding a three-touchdown advantage, Orton puts the ball in the hands of Moreno. He takes picks up 19 yards on the first two carries, setting up another first down near midfield.

Q4 - 3:40: LaMont Jordan gets in on the rushing act, picking up three yards on his first carry and five on the next to set up third and short. Jordan keeps the chains moving, going off a Ryan Clady block for four yards and another first down.

Q4 - 2:00: With the crowd starting a wave of approval, Jordan powers ahead on another two carries, setting up 3rd and 4 from the 33-yard line. Orton milks the clock down to the two-minute warning.

Q4 - 1:47: Going off right tackle, Jordan is stopped short of the marker. The Browns burn their first timeout, with the Broncos facing 4th and 3 from the 32-yard line. Jordan is stopped short on the fourth down by McDonald, and the Browns take over on downs at their own 32-yard line.

Q4 - 0:42: In hurry-up mode, Quinn completes to Harrison on first down for nine yards. Facing 2nd and short, Quinn finds a wide open Robert Royal for his first catch of the game. The 13-yard reception sets up a first down in Broncos’ territory.

Q4 - 0:27:After an incompletion, Quinn takes a deep shot to the end zone for Mohamed Massaquoi, but the ball flies out of the end zone. Facing third and long from the 46-yard line, Quinn finds a crossing Harrison who scurries out of bounds for a 15-yard gain and a first down.

Q4 - 0:27: A pair of incomplete passes intended for Royal sets up 3rd and long. A tipped pass intended for Cribbs lands in the hands of Darcel McBath for the interception. The Broncos kneel out the clock, and move to 2-0 on the season. Momentum is one of the most powerful tools in the NFL. Lets keep this train rolling. And lets prove that we can beat good teams, too. Not just sucky Ohio team. :P

  2. olderthandirt says:

i cant believe that those morons in the stands boo there qb when he winning.do they even watch the game i though orton played a smart, i dont think he is to worried about his numbers he would rather have wins.
when his recievers are covered throw it away if you have to,no sacks no int’s

  3. broncofan96 says:

ya i dont get it he has 500 yrds and 2 TD and no INT whats so bad.

  4. BrandonBailey19 says:

To all the loyal Bronco Fans,

We stuck with our team through the lows of the offseason. We said they would be good even when the whole world was against the Broncos. We stuck it out and look what happened…..2-0. Feels good but we are not done so lets keep it going! We loyal Bronco fans deserved this after all the lows we had to overcome

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

    Hey olderthandirt,

Have you ever been to a game at the new stadium? I can’t believe how dumb some bronco fans are. I went to a game a few years ago when we played the Ravens on Monday night. Jake plummer threw a TD and every one was cheering. And this Drunk guy started yelling at people telling them that they could only cheer when he told them they could cheer. And started booing Jake after he threw a TD. Then he chucked his beer at me for no reason and started a fist fight with the guy next to me. We beat up on the Ravens and this guy was hating on us for no reason. Those guys aren’t true fans and just go there to get drunk and whine about everything.

Great game DOOM!!! Love the sacks that have been missing from our D. Also how sweet it is to start winning the turnover battle, back to back games with an int for the D’s final stand on the field.

I loved seeing us able to pound the rock and bust off some long runs at the end there, a very critical part of our offense missing last year. Buckhalter and Moreno compliment each other very well…and I guess we figured out why Jordan is still here…He holds on to the ball and we protect the others from injury when they don’t have to be in there.

I’m trying to figure out how long BMarsh will be in the dog house. If you watch his body language on the field, when he’s split out, if we are going to pass or run. Regardless of the issues off the field he is still a dynamic player who can change the pace of the game with a single catch.

Great game now lets start looking at Oakland and JA-oke Russel next week.

  7. bntbroncos says:

florio, thats common in all the stadiums today. Being a displaced Broncos fan I’ve been to Indy, St Louis, and Cincy and in each of them there were drunken idiots…Who think they are better then those playing and with the help of liquid courage start fighting with anyone who doesn’t agree with them all the time.

  8. Cali_BroncosFan says:

All I can say is I am really impressed with Orton.
    GOOD JOB ORTON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. BrandonBailey19 says:

    What a day!
I see my Broncos win and my fantasy team won its matchup!
The key to my victory was that I had Andre Johnson and Chris Johnson and they had huge games today. I also had the Titans D and i had -4 points from them because the Texans killed them. But what a day today!

  10. florio's_mom says:

So few comments. A big win and no one has something to say about it? lol

  11. Dr.Chris24 says:

I have to say our D is awesome

  12. paulbedichek says:

Yeah a great win,but I gotta complain about the new policy of not being able to get a feed to watch the game then I pay $30 to some site it doesn’t work so the second half I walk down to the El Cortez(Vegas) and that was great, guess I’ll just do that the next time. There are some of us would start a revolution if we can’t watch our Broncos!Doom 4 bagger the running game, what D,I bet on them and our QB brings home the bacon.Next Raiders.AFC West number 1 not them us.What D!!

  13. florio's_mom says:

    Hey Chris.

  14. Dr.Chris24 says:

Florio, dont be so negative just because you dont agree with someone

  15. florio's_mom says:

LOL i thought you sed you werent gunna do this chris.

  16. Dr.Chris24 says:

do what? florio, nobody knows what you are talking about

  17. florio's_mom says:

I thought our team did a great job over all three aspects of the game(sans two missed FG). Don’t you agree chris?

  18. Dr.Chris24 says:

what does “sans” mean? you should learn how to spell

  19. florio's_mom says:

Except for the two missed FG.

  20. Dr.Chris24 says:

you couldn’t have just said that instead?

  21. florio's_mom says:

    Nope.

  22. florio's_mom says:

Doom’s transition to OLB is going smoothly huh?

  23. Dr.Chris24 says:

I think 4 sacks says it all.

  24. florio's_mom says:

He destroyed that RT. He looked so confused by the third sack.

  25. Dr.Chris24 says:

Florio, why did you attack that guy for making up the blue dynamite name? I think its cool

  26. florio's_mom says:

Cuz names for defenses are earned. not made up after two games.

  27. florio's_mom says:

Purple People Eaters. Steel Curtain. No Name Defense.

Those weren’t given to them over night.

  28. Dr.Chris24 says:

do you not think our defense will be great for years to come?

  29. florio's_mom says:

time will tell. But I think we have a great Def Co and a great system and we will bring in guys that will ball.

  30. florio's_mom says:

    What?

  31. Dr.Chris24 says:

ooops, read the comments wrong. for some reason I thought you called him a looser. lol

  32. florio's_mom says:

wow. Maybe you should read closer next time before you call some one out.

  33. Dr.Chris24 says:

jeez sorry Im not perfect like you

  34. florio's_mom says:

    Its cool man.

  35. Dr.Chris24 says:

This is Kyle Ortons last year in Denver

  36. florio's_mom says:

Of course it is. Unless we give him a new contract.

  37. Dr.Chris24 says:

we wont give him a new contract. he doesnt deserve it.

  38. florio's_mom says:

two games in and you came to this conclusion?

  39. Dr.Chris24 says:

plus the fact that he cant throw a football over 40 yards and he kills recievers with his inaccurate throws

  40. florio's_mom says:

Well we are undefeated and are winning the AFC west while all might Jay cutler is 1-1 and behind the Vikes.

  41. Dr.Chris24 says:

I’m not saying I want Jay Cutler. I’m saying Kyle will not lead us to a super bowl. he is not a franchise quarterback. we are 2-0, but Orton didnt lead us to 2-0, are amazing defense and rather easy first 2 games did

  42. florio's_mom says:

Rex lead his team to the superbowl and he sucks.

  43. florio's_mom says:

How many “franchise” QBs are in the league? 5?

  44. Dr.Chris24 says:

did you just say Rex Grossman lead his team to a super bowl?! I think not, I think defense and special teams did.

and where is Grossman now? back up quarterback where Orton should be

  45. florio's_mom says:

Thats what im saying. he didnt do that single handedly.

  46. royalbroncofan1 says:

Defense has D & D leading the way with tackles… Davis and Dawkins. Defense currently ranked 3rd…..Colts have yet to play. 4 sacks for Elvis !!! Orton looked more confident in system. Team win was impressive!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. florio's_mom says:

thats right RBF1. All the haters, take that!

  48. florio's_mom says:

Some one needs nappy time. How can you be so negative after a great win like that?

  49. Dr.Chris24 says:

because I want more wins like that. beating the Bengals and Browns isnt saying much. and even in those wins, we didnt look good. maybe you should watch the game.
