Broncos vs. Browns: Fourth Quarter Notes

November 6th, 2008 - 5:17pm by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: Browns start the final quarter with a 3rd and 6… Brady Quinn rolls and finds Brayon Edwards for the first down, but I see laundry. Offensive pass interference on Kellen Winslow. It is now 3rd and 16… Louis Green sniffs out the bubble screen forcing a fourth down.

13:43: Dave Zastudill hangs a punt high into the Cleveland sky and Eddie Royal calls for the fair catch at the 7-yard line… On the first play Cutler hits Royal who takes it to the house for a 93-yard touchdown. Prater hits the extra point and just like that the Broncos are trailing by just three.

To say that play took a little air out of Cleveland Browns Stadium would be an understatement.

How about some stats after that play. The 93-yard touchdown is the second longest touchdown by a rookie in Broncos history and ties for the fourth longest touchdown pass. Cutler has now thrown for 336 yards, his fifth 300-yard passing day this season.

13:11: But a bit of the air comes back in the stadium after Josh Cribbs returns the ball to the 50-yard line… on third down, Quinn hits Winslow — but there is a fumble. Broncos ball.

Dre’ Bly forced it, Karl Paymah recovers. First down Broncos at their 38-yard line.

Quiz time, who can tell me the rookie who holds the team record for the longest reception?

12:41: Two straight incompletions have the Broncos facing a 3rd and 10… but Cutler and Royal keep the drive alive with a 22-yard reception. Royal now has 164-yards receiving, a Broncos single game record for a rookie.

11:40: Following a sack, Cutler throws it up and Nate Jackson makes an amazing grab between Browns defenders for 19 yards.

10:12: Broncos are facing another third down… Cutler in the shotgun hits Daniel Graham who breaks tackles and rumbles in for a 28-yard touchdown. Prater nails the extra point, and just like that the Broncos go up 27-23.

9:50: Browns take possession at the 22-yard line… After faking the end around several times, the Browns finally execute the play and Cribbs takes it 21-yards around left end.

8:30: Winslow redeems his fumble a bit, grabbing a Quinn pass and motoring down the field for a 30-yard gain. Browns at the Broncos 25… On first down, Wesley Woodyard again uses his speed to corral Cribbs for no gain… on the next play, Lewis finds Lewis out of the back field and the big back moves the ball to the Denver 6-yard line.

6:00: Third and goal inside the one and Lewis powers in for the Browns touchdown. Head Coach Mike Shanahan doesn’t agree, and has challenged the call.

So I think the action is a little too intense for my quiz, so I will just give the answer. The longest reception by a rookie was by Jerry Tarr in 1962.

The call on the field is upheld, touchdown. Browns retake the lead 30-27 with just under five minutes remaining.

4:57: On first down, Hillis carries a Browns tackler for a first down… Following a Browns holding penalty, Cutler’s pass is tipped and is almost picked off… Cutler finds a streaking Nate Jackson across the middle, but he is rocked by Willie McGinest as tries to make the catch. Jackson is down and being attended to by the Broncos training staff.

Jackson is able to walk off the field.

4:29: Third down and Cutler finds Brandon Stokley, but he looks a smidge short… Broncos hurry up, but Cutler doesn’t like what he sees and calls a timeout.

3:58: Fourth and one, Hillis is stopped but keeps his legs moving and bounces for the first down.

3:28: After a 8-yard completion to Graham, the Broncos are facing another third down. Cutler runs a sneak for the first down.

2:00: Just before the two-minute warning, Cutler finds Graham over the middle for 14 yards. Broncos have the ball 1st and 10 at the Browns 29-yard line.

Cutler takes the snap and keeps it, scrambling up the middle for an 18-yard run.

1:20: Two plays later, Cutler hits Marshall in the endzone for the go-ahead touchdown. Prater’s kick is good and the Broncos have forged back ahead 34-30.

1:14: Prater readies for the kickoff with Cribbs back deep. He squibs it, but Cribbs is able to pick it up. Good pursuit by the special teams brings him down at the 33-yard line.

1:03: Quinn starts the drive with a completion of 9-yards to Winslow… Two incomplete pass bring up a fourth down… Incomplete, the defense holds and the Broncos offense is back on the field. Victory formation.

0:20: And that will do it, the Broncos missing their two running backs, come from behind to defeat the Browns 34-30.

  6. 07elway says:

Wow, that was hilarious. They showed a clip of The Drive with Elway and said Cutler needed a drive like that but maybe not quite at the magnitude Elway did it – HA – 2 seconds later Cutler throws a killer spiral to Royal and BOOM we got a Touchdown.
    YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I LOVE this game. Where has that been… I’ll take it now over never.

Now we got the ball back and Cutler is making me shake in my boots. That pass to Jackson almost got picked off… that was a miracle catch.

    ok defense, come on…stand firm!!!

    that run play isnt firm

  12. elviselway says:

    damn winslow!

    he is killin us

  13. 07elway says:

I dunno… I want to say it wasn’t a TD but it sure looked like he crossed that line but I didn’t see the ball across the line or touching it. Hopefully Shanny challenging it will work for us.

Our defense is getting much better and tougher. They’ve made some big improvements as well as the offense.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  14. vinster572 says:

5 minutes to get a td or a fg.. just throw it short and run it with hillis.. no stupid turnovers..

    go broncos!

  15. DnvaBroncomaniac says:

Come on Broncos Please dont have another turnover on this most likely last drive of the game Lets kill that clock and end it with a touchdown

  16. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Now it is time for Cutler to keep making plays, SMART PLAYS FOR US!
Babe I think you need to go back and reada few of my comments in the 3rd quarter. or here I’ll just copy and paste the link to make it easier for you. LOL And yes you did make the right call there with what I was saying that I set you up for. :D

  17. vinster572 says:

now Jays just being dumb, he had Hillis wide open.

  18. 07elway says:

My goodness, we have this game sitting right in the palm of our hands. Hold on to the ball long enough to not let Cleveland get it back and try something with it but get us a TD and the very needed win. Cutler has thrown for more than 400 yards – told ya he was incredible, what an arm – if anyone can take us to the promise land its him. We can totally win this game… only Cutler & Co. can make this happen.

And where did you go my man??

Oh crap, another player injured. MAKE IT STOP!!! Its Nate Jackson… that was a big hit. YIKES.

Keep the faith… we’re gonna win this
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  19. vinster572 says:

yes!! thank you hillis.. 4th and 1.. woo hoo

  20. datboigreen says:

    And Here We………..GO!!!

  21. 2champ4pickSIX says:

I have never doubted you or him for that matter babe.
Amazing how he has done this game though without a running game or a true running back for that matter. How about that dive for the first with hillis? WOW!
Anyway keep the ball in our hands. And incase you missed it 07elway I was saying talk like msn, or aim, or email or whatever you think is ok for you.

  22. vinster572 says:

    touchdown!!!!!!

  23. broncoinexile says:

just got home from work and have to say:

I am sooo very pleased the Broncos decided to toy with the Browns before slamming the door in their face, yet again.

No idea how everyone played tonight, but I have hope this can be the sign of this team coming together and playing like they can.

  24. datboigreen says:

    COMMON DEFENCE!!!!!MAKE A STOP!!!!!!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  25. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Did anyone see that Marshall was pulling something out of his pants to celbrate. SMART WR IN STOKELY came running over and got in his face and yelled STOP! Wise play Stokely to stop an insuing flag I bet, and a fine that Marshall wouldn’t care about. Stop being the Primadona, play smart and be a respectable individual that Rod Smith was. GEEZ, get over the Porter incident!

  26. vinster572 says:

    4th down!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  27. broncoinexile says:

    this could be it!

  28. broncoinexile says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

  29. navy_bronco_fan says:

    Nice WIN tonight!

  30. vinster572 says:

SWEET SWEET VICTORY!! NICE 4TH QUARTER COMEBACK!!

  31. broncoinexile says:

Cleveland fans must just HATE the 4th quarter and Denver quarterbacks.

  32. hbobbyt says:

    Awesome!!!!!!!!!

  33. 07elway says:

WE GOT A WIN, NA NA NA NA NA NA NA!!!!! CUTLER IS THE MAN!!!!!!! Almost 500 yards, whew!!! I think I’m in love.

Soooo, what do all you nay-sayers have to say now??? A bunch of nothin’… hmmm thought so!

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Finally, I can have some peace at mind.

And email if fine with me funny honey. I don’t want the whole world to know what mine is, how do we do this??

Well deserved victory…. Faith always works.
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

  34. RSH says:

All you Jay Cutler critics, where are you? Cutler put this team on his back tonight and led them to victory. Did he have some dumb throws? Yes. But some of the plays he made tonight, could not have been made by many other quarterbacks.

  35. kriskros says:

A win FINALLY!! It’s amazing how a Broncos win makes the week and the weekend feel so much better!

  36. broncofannsd says:

That was a great TEAM win!!! This game should build a ton of confidence for these guys. Enjoy the extra rest guys and let’s beat the Falcons. We can do this. Keep the faith and GO Broncos!!!!!

  37. broncoinexile says:

I have figured it out . . . we need to play all the rest of our games on short week schedules.

I am as pleased as anyone here and really glad that Jay had a great game, but I’m concerned about the injuries and the fact that even with a ton of yards this was a close game against a sketchy team.

However, a win is just what the team needs to get focused and back in the rhythm of kicking a$$!

    Go Broncos!

  38. Bones1965 says:

    Bronco Love…………………..Awesome win

  39. twiztedbronco says:

This is my first post so I’ll make it a quick one… Wesley Woodyard is a monster. I hope Torain isn’t too bad off cuz I liked what I saw from him. All of you who have been going on about getting rid of Cutler are out of your damn minds and GOOD GOD did we need that win. Royal’s the man by the way!

    GO BRONCOS!

  40. broncofannsd says:

07elway and 2champ4pickSIX…you’re funny! Just get together and get it over with already.

I agree, where are all the nay-sayers now. Hillis and Woodyard are AWESOME!!!!!!

  41. bestinthewest24 says:

    I LOVE THE BRONCOS!

  42. killa b's 24-32 says:

After watching the first half, and after seeing both the RBs go down,
    I didn’t see this coming.
But props to the offense for pulling through.
Cutler with 447 yards, INT wasnt his fault.
Hillis has had 2 straight weeks of great play.
    Bly made some plays….finally. haha.

And did anyone else notice how well Wesley Woodyard played tonight?
he made some great plays, and brought some much needed fire and swagger to our defense. I was waiting for a while to see him play on the starting D, and he brought a good performance.

  43. T koch says:

I would of voted for J as prez but i didn’t want to lose him for 8yrs…

  44. bullridinmike27 says:

well we are 5-4 and so far 4 of them have been really close games that have made me nervus but i will take a win but i think this is one of our best rookie classes Woodyard stepped in big and so i think if he can continue to play like that and we get williams back those are two solid linebackers and winborn is ok in most intences but their is a couple of plays he over pursued. Cutler played awsome he is the future for our team and i have never thought different of that. Bly played pretty decent but i don’t think he is any where near the top 10 to 15 corner backs in the league. but he did play good tonight. manual did not play good that first td that the browns scored he could have picked it but he was to concerend about try to make a big hit but yet he failed at that and all night he was torched by winslow we definatly need to get better safties during the off season. but i am pleased about the win tonight, wooooo go broncos, lets keep winning but lets correct some of our miss cues, oh and good job payton hillis for steppin in and thanks to all broncos for holding on to the ball. WOOOOOO GO BRONCOS………

  45. 07elway says:

I’m worried about the injuries too but Shanny is gonna figure this one out… hopefully by the time we play Atlanta most of our guys will be back. We’re going to need Scheffler back, no questions about that hopefully he can come back. Cutler did exceptional for the huge lack of reliable RBs but he pulled it off and I couldn’t have asked for a better TEAM performance. That second half turned this game turned into a wild game and was a blast.

Right now their showing Cutler in the locker room talking with Schefter, he he, he looks happy. If he’s happy then I’m happy. What a guy. I’m a girl… I’ll drool over him if I want to, I’ve got a reason to now. I can’t fathom this – 447 yards – more yards thrown in a game than Elway ever did. He’ll never be John Elway but look at what he’s done – Mile High Magic in Cleveland, Ohio. The only fans left in that stadium are Bronco fans – wish I was one of them. December 7 is coming… I’ll be there.

This game was so exciting and just wild. The best part for me was that killer spiral from Cutler to Royal for 93 yds, WOW!!! That was the big breaking point for us. I’m so excited I don’t know what to do with myself. This game was great for so many other reasons – the start of Thursday night football, we showed America that we’re not a lost cause – take that Chargers (oh sorry I mean the Whiners)!!! Bet Rivers is whining and crying a river now. Wish I could see it, HA!!!

Keep the faith… this win proves we’re worth believing in
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

  46. broncoinexile says:

    07Elway,

Sorry, we have the whiners here in SF (and the faiders too). It’s the crybabies in SD.

My guess is the crisis hotline in Cleveland is working overtime again.

Drool all you want, that was an awesome performance and some gutsy throws by a guy living in a very big (07) shadow. To go into Cleveland and do that is the sign of great things to come.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed the trainers can work some magic on these guys and get everyone back on the field at full speed.

And just so everyone knows, great stop by the D when it counted! THAT is a positive sign.

  47. Broncomania56 says:

I eat my words from last week. I didn’t see us winning this one the way it started, however am extremely happy it was a win. This is what these boys needed!!! A hard fought victory. Woodyard should be a full time starter. I loved him in pre-season. I am glad to see him contribute. Looks as though Cutler will have to tote the load alone a few more weeks. No running backs left, not sure what will happen. Gonna just enjoy this win.

I was extremely happy to see Stokely keep Marshall from getting a stupid penalty after he scored. The way I see it, let your play making abilities do all the talking. Way to keep your heads on and remember you don’t need the refs to cost us yet another game.

Where did Hillis come from. Two straight weeks of him being a difference maker, great job!!!!

If Cutler can duplicate the dink and dunk he did today, this offense can put points on the board. The announcers made a clear statement, ” The Broncos offense is taking what the Cleveland defense is giving them”. That is what they should do the rest of the year. The big plays will come, but take what the defense gives you and you can eat up the clock. Keep the defense off the field. Hopefully we will se the return of Champ Bailey after the next game.

I’m still not sure this team will fair much better, due to all the injuries, however this game had to be a huge confidence builder. I thought Jay was gonna get 500 + yards.

Great game Broncos!!!! Get some rest, heal up, and get ready for the next game.

  48. SuperbowlXXXIII says:

All i gotta say is that i would hate to be the corner that was covering Royal on that 93 yard TD pass. Did any one see him call Jay out right before the snap? I love how they pulled to together at the end and kept the season alive.

  49. 07elway says:

broncoinexile – Okay, Rivers is a BIG crybaby but he’s a whiner too. He whines then he cries like a little baby – yeah well boo hoo mister (Rivers)!! HA.

All I can say is we better be more than prepared for our very last game against the crybaby company in SD. They’re gonna put up a fight – it should be no problem for us if only we play every game from now on like we did in the 2nd half of this game. We have to keep this up and not let it fade away.

I’m just gonna sit back and REALLY enjoy this win. It was well-earned, well-deserved and I can’t get over how explosive Cutler was. It was 100% a TEAM effort, that’s what this is all about but Cutler stood out. 447 is VERY impressive. He did his job, he got the offense to work as a TEAM and that gave our defense the will to defend what our offense did. If our D hadn’t defended what Cutler & Co. did, if I were Cutler I would have been P’od. But they didn’t they came out in the 2nd half and won this wild game as a TEAM!!!! I’ll never forget this game.

Marshall needs to grow up and take some advice from Smith on how to handle himself on the field. He’s getting too weird for this team. If Stokley hadn’t run over to stop him from whatever he was gonna do (something stupid I’m sure) this would’ve ended in disaster. You all noticed how fast the ref rushed over to see what Stokley was stopping Marshall from doing. That could’ve been very ugly. He needs to act his age – more mature and respectful. But he did score our game winner – way to go #15.

Where did my football stud go? I miss you already. ;)

    Keep the faith
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  50. broncofannsd says:

B Marsh needs to mature and learn from Rod Smith. Stokely made a great play by keeping Marsh from getting a stupid penalty. Where is Detroit Reggie? Go Cutler and team! Awesome win guys!!!!
