Q1 – 15:00: The Broncos have won the toss and elected to receive. Peyton Hillis is back deep to receive.
Q1 – 14:55: From two yards deep in the end zone, Hillis lost the football and the Browns have recovered. They will start 1st and 10 from the Broncos 22-yard line.
Q1 – 14:50: Starting on defense for Denver are Brian Dawkins, Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill, Andre’ Goodman, Elvis Dumervil, Andra Davis, D.J. Williams, Mario Haggan, Ronald Fields, Kenny Peterson and Ryan McBean. McBean makes a strong play on first down, pressuring Brady Quinn into an incompletion.
Q1 – 14:39: After a short run by Jamal Lewis, Haggan is down on the play. He walks off the field on his own power. Wesley Woodyard and Robert Ayers come in on a nickel package for 3rd and 8, and Quinn finds Braylon Edwards up high over the middle of the field for a first down.
Q1 – 13:49: With seven yards separating Cleveland from the end zone, the Broncos defense makes a stand. Strong play from the front seven forces the Browns into a 3rd and goal at the 4-yard line. With trips left, Quinn works out of the shotgun but fires incomplete to Mike Furrey.
Q1 – 12:22: The snap is a little high, but Phil Dawson boots a 21-yard field goal. Browns 3, Broncos 0.
Q1 – 12:14: The kickoff is downed for a touchback. The Broncos offensive starters are Ryan Clady, Ben Hamilton, Casey Wiegmann, Chris Kuper, Ryan Harris, Daniel Graham, Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney, Peyton Hillis, Correll Buckhalter and Kyle Orton at quarterback. Orton works play-action on first down, and finds a wide open Gaffney for 25 yards.
Q1 – 11:29: After a false start on Wiegmann and a 4-yard loss by Stokley, the Broncos were backed into a 3rd and 19 from their own 36. With Buckhalter as the lone setback, Orton looked for Gaffney on the right side again, but a flag came in. Hank Poteat was whistled for holding, giving the Broncos new life in a new set of downs.
Q1 – 10:58: With a short gain by Buckhalter on first down, the Broncos opened up on second down from their own 43-yard line in shotgun form. Orton was pressured on both plays, firing a pair of incomplete passes to set up the first punt of the game by Brett Kern.
Q1 – 10:07: Facing their first special teams test of the game from Joshua Cribbs, the Broncos’ kickoff coverage was ready. Cribbs took the ball at the 5-yard line, but good pressure from Woodyard halted him at his own 12 — that’s where Cleveland will take over.
Q1 – 10:02: Before the Browns got started, the Broncos took their first timeout of the half. Sporting three wide, Quinn went play action to Cribbs over the middle of the field. He appeared to have the catch, until Dawkins jarred it loose with a big hit to his right side.
Q1 – 9:14: Woodyard continued an active first quarter, setting up a 3rd and 9 with a stop on Browns backup RB Jerome Harrison. With the Browns on their heels, the defense made an even bigger play. A fumbled snap by Quinn was recovered by Darrell Reid. Broncos take over, first and goal from the 9-yard line.
Q1 – 8:07: Looking to capitalize on the turnover, the Broncos went to their youth with Rookie Knowshon Moreno. He picked up seven yards on his first two carries, setting up a 3rd and goal from the 2-yard line. The Broncos have used their second timeout, setting up for this big down.
Q1 – 8:03: Lining up in I-formation with Hillis and Moreno, Orton dupes the defense, working a quick-slant play-action pass to Tony Scheffler for the touchdown. Matt Prater nails the extra point, and the Broncos convert on the Browns’ miscue. Broncos 7, Browns 3
Q1 – 7:55: A windy afternoon forces Prater to rely on a hold from Alphonso Smith on the kickoff. That wind was no trouble, as Prater boomed the kick through the uprights, keeping the ball out of Cribbs’ hands. The Browns look to get their running game going on first down, but Andra Davis stops Lewis for a gain of three yards.
Q1 – 7:22: Lewis found a crevice in the right side of the Broncos defense, rumbling for 12 yards before being knocked out of bounds by Dawkins. With a 1st and 10 at their own 35, Quinn got a response from Dawkins, who flushed him out of the pocket. The quarterback got by Haggan, picking up five yards along the sideline.
Q1 – 5:20: Facing a 3rd and 2, Quinn found Furrey on a quick slant. An active Dawkins stops him close to the marker, but a favorable spot gives the Browns a 1st and 10 at their own 46-yard line.
Q1 – 4:23: A short run by Lewis set up play action on second down. Quinn found a wide-open Edwards over the middle in Broncos territory, setting up 1st and 10 from the 34-yard line.
Q1 – 2:17: Again using a 2-yard run by Lewis on first down, the Browns went to play action on second down. This time Andra Davis was ready, stopping Harrison on a short crossing route to set up 3rd and 6 from the Broncos 30-yard line. With four wide receivers, Quinn found an open Cribbs. But Champ Bailey stopped him well short of the marker.
Q1 – 1:49: Phil Dawson connects from 47 yards out for his second field goal of the quarter. Broncos 7, Browns 6
Q1 – 1:44: Three yards deep in his own end zone, Eddie Royal returns the kickoff out to the 19-yard line. That’s where the Broncos will get started.
Q1 – 1:35: With two tight ends lined up left, Orton pitches to Buckhalter. Following that heavy formation and a big block from Clady, he picks up 11 yards and a first down.
Q1 – 0:00: After a short gain from Buckhalter, Orton finds a crossing Brandon Marshall for his first catch of the game. The three yard completion sets the Broncos up with a 3rd and 5 at their own 35-yard line to start the second quarter.
Q2 – 14:15: With Marshall lined up in the slot, Orton finds Brandon Stokley crossing the other way for a huge gain. He speeds by a Browns defender, bursting upfield before being stopped at the Browns’ 28-yard line. The 37-yard gain sets up a first down from there
Q2 – 13:19: Buckhalter bursts up the gut for five yards, setting up the pass on second down. Out of the shotgun, Orton finds Royal in the right flat for a 7-yard catch and another Broncos first down.
Q2 – 12:06: Browns LB Eric Barton was ready for the run on first down, stopping Buckhalter for a short gain. Sporting five wide on second down, Orton eluded a sack from Barton, but his throw came up a few yards shy of Royal downfield. On 3rd and 8 from the 14-yard line, Orton again eluded pressure, rolling right to find a crossing Stokley for the first down.
Q2 – 11:54: After a failed fade attempt to Royal on first down, Denver came out on second down with three wide receivers. Orton was forced to use the Broncos’ final timeout of the half.
Q2 – 11:45: With Scheffler lined out wide, Gaffney went the opposite direction. The pass was almost intercepted by Browns DB Brandon McDonald, but he was out of bounds. David Bowens brought pressure on third and goal, getting to Orton to force the incompletion.
Q2 – 11:42: Matt Prater keeps the points coming, connecting on a 23-yard field goal. Broncos 10, Browns 6
Q2 – 11:38: The strong kickoff coverage on Cribbs continues. A team of Peyton Hillis and Darcel McBath stops the speedster at his own 18-yard line. That’s where the Browns will take over.
Q2 – 10:22: Jamal Lewis takes his 10th carry of the first half up the gut for six. That set up a short 5-yard crossing route from Quinn to Edwards on second down, moving the chains for the Browns.
Q2 – 9:34: Harrison keeps the ground attack moving, with a gain of five on first down. The Browns went to some trickery on second down, working an end around with Cribbs. Elvis Dumervil sniffed it out, but was whistled for a 15-yard face mask. That penalty was only the second of the half for Denver, and moved the Browns into Broncos’ territory at the 47-yard line.
Q2 – 7:55: Andra Davis and Vonnie Holliday came up big on second down, stopping Lewis for a loss of two. On 3rd and 11, Quinn completed to Cribbs, but he was well short of the first down. Dave Zastudil came in for his first punt of the half, but the ball narrowly sailed into the end zone. The Broncos will start at their own 20-yard line.
Q2 – 7:36: Moreno makes a statement on first down, following his blockers up the middle for a 12-yard gain and a first down. Going back to the rookie on the next play, Abram Elam and the Browns responded, stopping him short to set up a 2nd and 12 from the 30-yard line.
Q2 – 6:17: Working play action, Orton’s line gave him plenty of time. He fired a low ball to an outstretched Royal who appeared to have control. But the ball popped loose, setting up third and long. Looking as if he had a pitching mound to throw from, Orton’s pass fell short of a crossing Gaffney. Brett Kern’s punt was returned by Cribbs, but with minimal damage, thanks to a 57-yard boot. Darrell Reid brought him down from behind, leaving the Browns with a 1st and 10 at their own 30-yard line.
Q2 – 4:23: With Lewis as the lone setback and fullback Lawrence Vickers in motion, Renaldo Hill came up from his safety position to make a great ankle tackle. But Quinn recovered on second down, finding Lewis on a dump off to set up third and short. With multiple tight ends in on the I-form set, the Broncos defense came up big, stopping Lewis for no gain. As Dave Zastudil came in to punt, Brian Dawkins pumped his fist as he left the field, igniting the crowd.
Q2 – 4:00: Zastudil’s punt was a beauty, taking a favorable Browns roll before rolling out of bounds at the 6-yard line. Orton and the Broncos will take over from there.
Q2 – 1:59: McDaniels continues to work his rookie running back into the offense. Moreno showed his three-down back potential, going off right tackle on first down and powering ahead for a hard-fought four yards. He took the pitch left on second down, following a big block from Gaffney to set up a 3rd and short. He went back right on third down, picking up enough to move the chains. Buckhalter gave him a breather, picking up another four yards before the two-minute warning was called. The two backs have split 12 carries in the first half so far, earning 49 yards in the process.
Q2 – 1:50: After an incompletion, Orton and the Broncos lined up with three wide receivers on third down. He ran a timing route with Royal, firing a perfect ball for 11 yards and a first down. Royal was alert enough to take his route near the sideline, stopping the clock in this two-minute drill.
Q2 – 1:32: Orton looked for Royal again on the next two plays, but both passes were incomplete. One was ruled out of bounds, while the other appeared to be a miscommunication, as Royal’s back was turned. On third and 10, Orton went to his Week 1 hero, finding Brandon Stokley on an 18-yard out route. Stokley easily got out of bounds, keeping the chains moving and the clock stopped.
Q2 – 0:53: Crossing into Browns territory on first down, Orton again looked for Stokley on second down. Hank Poteat was called for his second penalty of the half — pass interference — setting up an automatic first down at the Browns 31-yard line.
Q2 – 0:41: Stokley’s cagey play showed up again on second down. Orton found him crossing the middle of the field. After corraling the ball, he headed for the sideline, moving out of bounds right at the marker for another first down at the 21-yard line.
Q2 – 0:28: Two incompletions to LaMont Jordan set up a 3rd and 10 for the Broncos from that same spot. Sporting trips right, Orton fired long to Royal, bringing in the field goal team.
Q2 – 0:23: Just outside of the red zone, Prater’s 39-yard kick sailed wide left, giving the Browns the ball at their own 29-yard line.
Q2 – 0:00: The Browns took a knee, and the Broncos will enter the locker room with a 10-6 lead. Be sure to switch over to our second-half live blog, to follow all the plays over the next 30 minutes.
