Broncos vs. Bears: Key Plays

December 11th, 2011 - 10:55pm by Stuart Zaas

Fourth-and-6 from the Chicago 11 (7:27, 1st quarter): Julius Peppers blocked Matt Prater’s 28-yard field goal attempt, stopping the Broncos’ momentum that was building from the 15-play drive that took Denver from its own 29 all the way down to the Chicago 11.

Fourth-and-1 from the Denver 22 (8:55, 3rd quarter): Devin Hester returned Britton Colquitt’s 46-yard punt 26 yards to the Broncos 42. The Bears took advantage of that excellent field position, turning it into a 9-yard rushing touchdown by Marion Barber to take a 7-0 lead.

Third-and-27 from the Chicago 45 (0:18, 3rd quarter): Facing a third-and-long, Caleb Hanie found Barber out of the backfield for a gain of 16 to put the Bears back in field goal range. On the next play, Robbie Gould converted a 57-yard field goal to increase Chicago’s lead to 10-0.

Second-and-10 from the Denver 40 (0:30, 4th quarter): With time winding down in the fourth quarter, Tim Tebow found Matthew Willis for a 19-yard gain, pushing Denver into Chicago territory. After two incomplete passes and a Tebow scramble for no gain, Prater came on to drill a 59-yard field goal to send the game into overtime tied 10-10.

Third-and-7 from the Denver 38 (12:53, overtime): On his way to what looked to be a sure first-down run, Barber was stripped by Wesley Woodyard. Elvis Dumervil pounced on the loose ball to halt the Bears’ potential game-winning drive and give the Broncos offense the ball.

Third-and-8 from the Denver 36 (12:12, overtime): Tebow hit Demaryius Thomas just past the first-down marker to extend what would become the team’s game-winning drive. Thomas leaped in the air to bring down the pass for a 10-yard gain to put Denver in Prater’s field-goal range. Four plays later, Prater converted a 51-yard field goal. The kick marked his fourth game-winning kick of the season, and third in the past three games.

We need Dawk for this game bad.

  2. shaztah says:

Thanks all for the birthday wishes. You guys are the best.

  3. shaztah says:

I was reading somewhere last night that an analyst was so impressed that the stadium didn’t empty in the 4th quarter. He said that people were saying that they weren’t giving up until the clock read 0:00. It is hard to believe that this team can have such an impact on it’s fans.

  4. socalbigbroncofan says:

Just heard an interview with matt prater and he said he wouldn’t want anyone else being qb and leading this team than Tim Tebow.

  5. stevecan2 says:

Dawk is my absolute favorite current bronco even moreso than tebow, but i disagree with you strand. Minimizing his play time this week i think would be best. His pass coverage is feeling the effects of his age and as much maybe playing on straight run downs, which are few and far between.

My two cents on tebow and the religion issue. He does not preach, he gives his thanks and agnoliges his lord and saviour in all aspects of his life. It is refreshing to myself, always classy and respectful.

  6. RH709 says:

I havent finished reading the entire blog so I don’t know if this has been mentioned.

This weeks prediction: Denver wins never say never award for its cone from behind victory against Da Bears

    lol

  7. killerkod says:

I’m not about to get into a reglious debate………as I don’t think this is really the place for it.

    But I will say this………..

I am not a religous person whatsoever. I would consider myself to be athiest actually. But I respect whatever it is that people want to believe in and it’s not my place to say otherwise.

But I would be lying if I said I didn’t find it somewhat annoying to have to hear Tim thank, not just god, but his lord saviour jesus christ, before the start of every interview he gives. I mean, we all get it Tim.

But hey, freedom of speech right? He can say all he wants if he keeps leading this team to wins! LOL

  8. baylinorcrush says:

    Happy Birthday shaztah.

I remember the 1987 AFC championship game, the “fumble” game when the majority of the fans did not leave their seats until a half hour after it was over all along chanting superbowl superbowl, it’s a Bronco thing, it’s been around for decades shaztah. I was lucky enough to be in that stadium for that game which to date is arguably the greatest one ever played at Mile High along with the 1977 AFC championship win against the Raiders.

  9. killerkod says:

Happy Birthday shaztah! Hope you have a wonderful day……..it got off to a great start with a Broncos W anyways!!

    GO BRONCOS!

  10. baylinorcrush says:

    This is specially for savinghyrule:

“I said, ‘Oh, my goodness,’ ” Broncos rookie safety Quinton Carter said. “Just in the speed of the game, he just kind of jumped out of bounds. I don’t think he was thinking about it. He saved the game for us.”

“That’s four, five extra plays we could have,” Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker said.

“We probably would have had 10 seconds (left) if he would have stayed inbounds,” Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow said.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Tebow as usual is always the better man:

After the game, linebacker Brian Urlacher referred to Tebow as “a good running back.”

Tebow rushed 12 times for 49 yards, with a long run of 16 yards.

“Coming from a really good player,” Tebow said, “that means a lot.”

  12. baylinorcrush says:

    Early injuries update:

    Injuries.

It was a costly win in the secondary. Safety Brian Dawkins (neck), safety David Bruton (right Achilles/ankle) and cornerback Andre Goodman (concussion) left the game and did not return.

Marcus Thomas (knee) also left the lineup, and fullback Spencer Larsen left with a hamstring injury.

Dawkins has had neck troubles this season. Bruton left the stadium wearing a walking boot on his lower right leg.

  13. killerkod says:

usually what starts happening at this time of year……..dealing with injuries. Doesn’t make it any easier, that’s for sure. We need all the defensive help we can get to slow down Brady, welker and gronk……seems we’ve had trouble all year covering TE’s……..so this worries me considering he’s become brady’s fave target.

  14. killerkod says:

I think Dawk does everything in his power to start on Sunday.

  15. killerkod says:

but, the same way a superior D has masked a horrible O for the most part here in Denver, Brady’s O has been masking a horrible D in New England……….

Something’s gotta give in this game. Can’t wait to see what side of the ball wins the battle!

  16. baylinorcrush says:

They all will, no one wants to miss the first real test for this team before season end, the Bear game was supposed to be a cake walk if you remember the comments here without Cutler and Forte, didn’t turn out quite that way, it will require a much better game to beat the Pats.

  17. killerkod says:

Yah, i think most of us really underestimated the bears D.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

Not me, got 4 points, haha.

  19. seweatherman1 says:

I agree it wouldn’t hurt if those 6 dropped passes were caught this coming weekend. Maybe if we could score 1st it might put more pressure on Brady, and with his offense hopefully not going to be able to hold VONDOOM and company, he will throw a few more pics.

  20. killerkod says:

Yeah, saw that bay…………congrats on moving up. Now you’re really in my rearview mirror and the object is closer than it appears! haha

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, I just got behind your rear bumper and I’m close enough to read the if you can read this sign back off sticker, LMAO!

  22. killerkod says:

Yeah, so do as it says and BACK OFF!!! hahahaha

I’ve gotta sharpen my pencil on the last few picks, for sure!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

This is an easy one, we’re gonna kill them, LOL.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

So I guess Haley can shave his beard now.

  25. killerkod says:

oh, okay…….that def affects my prediction now! thanks bay! lol

  26. lonewolf7 says:

From worst to First and leading the AFC West.

    Anything possible!

    Go Broncos!

  27. HardHitting27 says:

D should be in nickel package most of this game with a CB on Gronk, freeing up our LBs to rush the passer. If the Pats lock up Von and Doom like the Bears did somewhat, that’ll free up Williams again.

Brady has always had tough games here and is usually good for one completion to Champ!!

    Should be a great game.

  28. drice97 says:

One thing that’s striking me today, after reading a lot of the articles and whatnot, the Bears clearly believe they LOST the game rather than we WON it. While I’ll acknowledge that we were helped by a mental error (Barber out of bounds), WE still had to go out and make plays. WE still had to drive the length of the field to get the FG. And in overtime, WE caused the fumble; it’s not like it just popped out of Barber’s hands. And WE had to make several plays to get back in FG range. That’s a lot of stuff that WE had to do for the Bears to LOSE…. Not a whole lot of credit thrown our way, which is fine, I guess. Let teams think this is all a fluke. Ask the Chargers, Dolphins, Chiefs, Raiders, Jets, Vikings and now the Bears how it feels to get “Tebowed.” Go Broncos!

  29. baylinorcrush says:

    Repost:

Like Urlacher says, there are no ugly wins, just ugly losses.

  30. seweatherman1 says:

Please correct me if I am wrong (which is highly possible) but I understand that their defense sucks against the run and just about all they do is pass the ball on offense, where our offense seems to only get going in the final qtr., but we have a stellar pass rush defense. So I am seeing us running the ball down their throat and doing everything we can to make Brady’s life miserable in the backfield. May turn out scoring a lot of points against them.

  31. brian_schneider says:

What’s worse, saying that your opponent beat you or saying that your team beat you? In my opinion by the Bears admitting they “lost” the game is worse than actually just saying “the Broncos played for 60 minutes..we didn’t.”

Remember when finishing games was a huge problem for us we’d play well for 3 quarters but fail in the 4th..now we’re the opposite..we fail for 3 quarters but play well in the 4th…late…late in the 4th.

  32. baylinorcrush says:

    Patriots O:

    Pass 2nd

    Run 20th

    Patriots D:

    Pass 32nd

    Run 13th

  33. baylinorcrush says:

Or we used to play well for the first three quarters of the season only to collapse in the last.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, I posted the league stats just to show you were wrong weatherman, the Pats weakness on D is all pass.

  35. seweatherman1 says:

No matter how you get there…a ‘W’ in the ‘W’ column is the only thing that counts. We put a ‘W’ in out ‘W’ column where the Bears didn’t…again. Urlacher is just mad because he ran his mouth and didn’t back up what he said they would do.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

This upcoming game should be an air fest, specially with McGahee less than 100% and Larsen now hurt too.

  37. Bronco_Turtle says:

    PUM PUM PUM

    ***SCORE PREDICTION***

    Broncos 32

    Patriots 27

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!!

    ***SCORE PREDICTION***

  38. seweatherman1 says:

Thanks Bay. Tebow may get some decent passing practice this game then, if the receivers can catch the ball.

  39. HardHitting27 says:

Tebow needs to quit hitting his receivers in the hands with the pass.

  40. Bronco_Turtle says:

If Tebow could catch it himself he would!!! :o ) All he can do is put it there, and he put it there time and time again…

Young Recievers, nothing really to worry about!!! Broncos D Looks SOOO much tougher when Von Miller is in the Line-Up… Love the guy!!!

  41. broncofan9137 says:

“AMAZING” I thought we lost this one because I thought we didn’t have enough time left in the game. But they pulled out again. I like I said “AMAZING”. This is one hard working team that never gives up. In all my years of watching the Broncos I have never seen a team like this one. Keep it up & no let ups.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

    Next man up:

    My boy Willis.

But Royal will probably be back, so Willis will be sent back to mostly ST duties and we’ll have another case of fumblelitis on our hands.

Oh sweet Spiderman Lloyd how I miss you, LOL.

  43. Bronco_Turtle says:

    ***AND***

Can we PLEASE get some TE production? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! Just a little… for starters!!!

  44. Bronco_Turtle says:

Bay, did Willis get knocked over or just fall over on the Tebow Pick? I thought it was a PI… but someone said he just fell down?

  45. brian_schneider says:

I will say as far as my heart condition and blood pressure is concerned they don’t know the difference between Orton’s play and Tebow’s play. LOL!

  46. baylinorcrush says:

I must of been taking a leak, LOL.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

I remember, the one on the sideline, have no clue but it had zero to do with whatever the receiver was doing, Tebow had zero business throwing that and the defender made an all world INT.

  48. Bronco_Turtle says:

Hehe! Nice… he owes Tebow a Steak!!!

:o ) I was glad that he got some targets… He is a solid number 3 guy… I hope we keep him around

  49. daddybronc says:

I’m just wondering – I wrote an article awhile back detailing Tebow’s need for adversity. This is the psychologist in me giving an evaluation. There is something in some people that just requires a ‘mountain’ to surmount. I thought that Tebow would have some ugly losses this season that would amount to the adversity that he would need to overcome. (hilarious to me hearing Hoge make the same observations) Somehow I am beginning to thing that the early dropped passes have become the adversity that Tebow requires. It is an interesting speculation.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

Unfortunately he is only our #4 guy and that makes me real mad as I yelled at Fox and McCoy plenty about all that this morning, Willis catches balls better than Decker, Thomas or Demaryius no questions asked and he is faster than all of them. When are they going to ever wake up to all of that!?!?!?!?!
