Broncos vs. 49ers: Quotables

August 26th, 2012 - 7:51pm by Stuart Zaas

Head Coach John Fox

On the No. 1 offense
“I was pleased with our offense. I thought we were pretty crisp. On the one drive, on the touchdown drive, I thought a very critical play was (WR) Brandon Stokley made a great grab on third down to keep possession. I’m never really happy losing ever, but I thought our first looked pretty sharp and I think we made great strides this week.”

On QB Peyton Manning
“I’ve seen steady improvements as he’s gotten here and as a tribute to him, his work ethic, I think the offensive coaches, his offensive teammates, for being a first-year guy… He’s not a young player by any stretch, but to come in and learn an offense, execute an offense with the precision he is pretty good.”

On starters playing at Arizona
“It’ll be a game-time decision. We’ll talk about it as a staff, we’ll see the health of our football team, go into greater detail of the performance of our football team [and] we’ll make that judgment moving forward.”

QB Peyton Manning

On how the offense played today
“Well you still got to do it every week. I thought we did some good things today. We moved the ball pretty well. We got two touchdowns—it would have been nice to have gotten three instead of settle for a field goal. I thought the running game was good. (RB) Willis (McGahee) made some nice runs [and] had some nice holes by the offensive line. Receivers made some nice plays as well. I thought one thing that was nice is that the defense got a turnover, and then the offense went out there and got a touchdown, as opposed to having to settle for three. That is always big when you can feed off one another, offense and defense.”

On the Broncos’ offensive success early in the game
“Well, the offense was excited to move the ball. I thought we had some rhythm—we huddled today yet we still played at an up-tempo pace of getting in and out of the huddle and getting the personnel packages.

On Lance Ball’s 38-yard catch in the first quarter
“In training camp, we have put [RB Lance Ball] outside at wide receiver a few times and, heck, actually thrown that particular pattern actually a couple times in training camp. So, it’s always nice when you can take something that you’ve worked on in practice and take it to the playing field. I thought it was a really good route and a good finish by him today.”

Wide Receiver Eric Decker

On the first half
“It was a well-executed first half. I think both offensively and defensively we felt comfortable with what we did on the field. We are going to go in, watch film, correct what we need to, get ready for Arizona, and stay healthy for the season.”

On the difference between this week and last week
“We executed better; we didn’t have mistakes and didn’t have too many turnovers. Also, defensively they stopped the ball and have been playing real well. That has been huge for us offensively.”

On whether he was pleased with the team’s performance
“Like I said, we were happy with what we put on the field in the first half. We executed what we wanted to do, we moved the football, scored in the red zone, didn’t turn the ball over too much and that is something you have to do consistently. You have to do that more than one time and that is something we are working on is to build off of that and have a couple weeks like that.”

DL Derek Wolfe

On the defense’s performance
“There is always room for improvement. There were a lot of mistakes that were made and areas where we can fix it. We are going to do it and I think we will be a great defense.”

On how the offense helped the defense
“When you’re getting three-and-outs and then your offense is going out there and scoring quick, you can’t go wrong. Three-and-outs and scoring quick, you can’t lose that way.

On the first-quarter defensive performance
“Everything was kind of going our way; the ball was falling into our hands. It was going great because there is nothing better than when you game plan and then execute that game plan. That is what kind of happened; we executed what we were practicing all week.”

LB Von Miller

On the defense
“We still have some fine tuning to do. We still have two good weeks of practice, a lot of work to get in and get ready for Pittsburgh.”

On the defense’s first-half performance
“It feels pretty good but it is a whole game. There is four quarters in a game and we still have a lot of tuning to do. I am sure we will take advantage of these next practices, we will be alright.”

On what was different from last week
“Coach (Jack) Del Rio has really been preaching that you practice like you play. I feel like we had some really good practices this week and hopefully we can have two good weeks of practice going into the Pittsburgh game.”

I’m covering my eyes.l. This Jets game is hideous!

I love the quotes, thanks for doing that every week Stuart!

  2. tlcat06 says:

So… I had no idea until Peyton said something that Lance Ball had played for the Colts. I get it now. Doubt he is going anywhere.

  3. 3rdGeneration says:

I was quite impressed with our starters in this game. Our 3s and 4s continue to struggle against opposing offenses. I’m a bit worried about our depth after the last 2 games.

  4. 3rdGeneration says:

The starting offense has not struggled to move the ball yet this preseason. I love what I see from our pass blocking and receiving weapons. They’re definitely getting open, but are suffering a bit from the dropsy’s. With that said, Dreessen’s and Tamme”s run blocking has failed to impress, and they’ve dropped more balls then anyone. I still think they’re great weapons and add a difficult dimension for opposing defenses to cover. McGahee looks pretty sharp, but I worry about his durability considering he’s 30 now. He petered out last season towards the end. I haven’t seen anyone really step up as an obvious #2 back. I was glad to see Hillman get out there today. He had a couple nice cuts showing off his “scat back” hype. I thought our LB’s played much much better this game. Mays had one of the best games I’ve ever seen out of him. Woody played well too and Miller is Miller. I’m still a bit worried about our safety play. It looked like Moore was responsible over the top on that long Davis touchdown. Anyway, all in all I thought our 1′s looked pretty dang good and ready for some real action!

  5. ScalptheChiefs says:

TEEEEEBOW, OHHHHHH NOOOOOO!!!! Is anyone really still unhappy about the choice Mr Elway made? Peyton torching san frans starters and Tebow going a woeful 4-14 with a pick against carolinas reserves….And that pick was gross!! I still think he will beat out Sanchez because they both are terrible but my goodness it feels great to have a legit QB! Interesting to see the first 13 we cut today, I also think Ball will be sticking around because Peyton couldnt stop saying enough good things about him. Even Moreno had a decent game. Playing like he really wants that roster spot, Im not entirely sold on Hillman but he is still very young. All in all a solid outing from our starters and BRING ON THE STEELERS!!! I dont think even all these great fans of Broncos Country can get excited about week 4 of the preseason lol Will Peyton even see a snap? One more thing, it was nice to see Hanie recover after a horrendous start to throw that td at the end of the first half. Hopefully he doesnt have to see a regular season snap but time will tell…. Peace out!!

  6. ScalptheChiefs says:

Moore was definitely asleep on that play brother, would have been nice if buddy waited 2 yards to recover that onside then the Davis td would have never happened!

  7. killerkod says:

    Good Morning Broncos Country!

Well, it was a real treat to watch our number 1′s yesterday…..on both sides of the ball. PM and the entire O looked pretty darn sharp. Stokley has really solidified his position as slot receiver. That grab he made was unbelievable and was crucial in keeping the drive going. Looks like PM has some nice chemistry with Decker……and I’m glad he got DMT involved as well. I don’t want him to become discouraged cause he isn’t getting many passes thrown his way.

The D was great too………loved how they were swarming the ball. They didn’t give the 49er’s much at all. And if it wasn’t for them catching Moore napping, that TD would never have happened.

I think Willis might have done more in this game to show that he should be cut than anything else. He could’ve easily converted that onside kick but made a mental mistake and grabbed it too quickly. And his muffs on the KR were horrible too.

Props where props are due: Hanie and Decks had a miscommunication on that route and it resulted in an INT. But he bounced back and looked pretty solid the rest of the way. That was encouraging. Also props to Moreno! Yes, I said Moreno. While I am not a fan of his whatsoever, he put in a solid effort and looked like he wanted it.

While our number 1′s and 2′s played pretty decent…….the same can’t be said about the rest of the team. The 2nd half was just hard to watch. No one on either side of the ball could make a play to save their life…….. Depth is def an issue.

And I think this will be a contant theme……….THE REPLACEMENT REFS ARE HORRIBLE! So many missed calls, blown calls, and just all around they looked inept to call a professional football game. Is the savings of $4000 a ref per game really worth it to a multi billion dollar organization such as the NFL? Work out a deal and get these clowns off the field!

Regardless, I feel terrific about our team heading into the Pitt game and we’ll see a lot more out of this O then. You know they’re not running the entire playbook in the pre-season. It’s gonna be AWESOME!

    GO BRONCOS!

  8. marshisboss says:

Good Morning Broncos Country I think if we can stay fairly healthy this season we have got a great shot at doing something special. Cut day 1 always a day I look forward to but I guess the players don’t but I have faith in this coaching staff to make the right calls

  9. tlcat06 says:

Kod the ref situation is so much more complicated than saving 4000$ but they have to fix it. Goodell can ignore the Saints whining as long as he wants but he cant ignore the fans whining about the refs. Or a lock out remember? They are going to get it figured out.

Before I went to sleep I had to tweet my thanks to John Elway. Tim Tebow has not fixed any of his bad habits. Has not even tried and we are in such a better position because we got Peyton. Peyton went out there yesterday to shut everybody up and he successfully made a fool out of Harbaugh without saying one word. We are blessed guys and we are going to have a good season.

I still think Hanie is going to be out back up with Os behind him and I think he did a really nice job. He was better than Tebow at least and I guess that’s what I wanted to see… bad INT but its not all about the INT its about what you do after the INT. I am encouraged.

  10. sndvl says:

About that Davis TD… Let’s not forget, he was the premier TE before Gronkowski had his breakout year. The move he made on the corner (Porter, I believe or was it the LB?!) was a great move. Yes Rahim was caught peeking into the backfield and that happens sometimes. But like I said, Davis is a great player.

And I can’t believe they threw the flag on the unchallengeable call. That was horrible. I guess everybody needs these preseason snaps…

  11. tlcat06 says:

Oh and Knowshon is making this team and two weeks ago I would’ve been mad but I’m really warming up to the idea.

  12. tlcat06 says:

Sndvl Fox was challenging the SPOT of the ball not who recovered it. Go watch his interview.

  13. tlcat06 says:

So needless to say he was pretty pissed when the reds made him look like a fool on national television. He had every right to at the way he did and hey did take the penalty away.

  14. Bronco_Turtle says:

    sndvl!

the move was on Miller! and Rahim was late…

I was 100% impressed by our first string performance yesterday… slightly concerned that Mannings play was abreviated by the big shot that he took, but his performance was Spot on and pretty much Flawless! Looked sort of like the Peyton of old, and as I said all along, if that’s the guy that shows up all season we will be just fine… (not superbowl calibre, but just fine)

It was very pleasant to watch Manning be Manning, and with Decker and DMT this offense should be as good as they come in the league this season (So long as NO ONE gets injured!)

PUM PUM PUM Exciting day to be a Bronco Fan!!!

Von WolfenDoom Football 2012!!! Gotta Love it!

  15. killerkod says:

I know cat……there is much more involved in the lock out than money alone……..but this needs to get rectified. They are doing an all around horrible job! They are so uncertain about every call they make…….and don’t get me started on the ones they miss. I mean, that PI call on Bolden was a horrible call……..and they ref was so late throwing the flag.

sndvl……he didn’t throw the flag to challenge the turnover….it was to challenge the spot of the ball. That’s why the refs picked up the flag…….in a not so graceful way mind you. lol

It was also nice to see Hillman out there. He didn’t do a lot, but I’ll give him a pass on his first game action. He did have a couple of solid runs.

  16. killerkod says:

Turtle……I don’t think you can call any team “super bowl calibre” yet……..we’re not even through the pre-season. Give this team a chance in regular season to show what they’ve got and reserve judgement until then.

  17. tlcat06 says:

Kod did you not notice how scared they were of Harbaugh? He paid them off or somehing because we were getting holding penalties called on us when there weren’t holding penalties. They didn’t get one call!

I thought it was great to see Hillman out there. Cant wait until he is totally healed up.

  18. singer says:

Actually the Ref never threw the flag on Fox,he just listened to Harbough scream it’s a 15 yard penalty over and over and THEN called it.

  19. marshisboss says:

Harbaugh was screaming for a penalty pretty lame

  20. Bronco_Turtle says:

Kod… I can easily call the Patriots and Packers ‘Super Bowl Calibre’ teams…

  21. Bronco_Turtle says:

regardless of how the #1′s play, this team is not 2 deep at any position really so I think saying that this squad is not ‘Super Bowl Calibre’ even with a Heathy Peyton is very Apt…

  22. tlcat06 says:

Harbaugh did quite a bit of screaming for a preseason game.

  23. OrangeTsunami says:

    Morning y’all.

The Good: Our 1st team looked very good, on both sides of the ball. It’s just the preseason, but you can’t help but be encouraged at this point. I absolutely love the no huddle offense, it’s a thing of beauty! We’re really going to wear down some defenses this season, controlling the ball like that and grinding them down.

The Bad: WAY too many dropped passes.. It’s getting beyond old at this point – it HAS to be fixed ASAP!

The Ugly: We have very little depth on this team, and it’s becoming a big concern.. This comes back to drafting, and maybe we haven’t quite turned it around like I have hoped..

  24. killerkod says:

fair enough turtle……but if this team stays healthy all season, there’s no reason to say this team can’t make the playoffs and make a serious run.

  25. killerkod says:

Depth is one thing……but I mean, you take Brady or Rodgers out of the equation and I doubt they make any sort of run.

  26. OrangeTsunami says:

It’s way too early to make any conclusions, but Seattle seemed to have hit on both Russell Wilson and Robert Turbin

  27. OrangeTsunami says:

I need to watch the game again, but the only rookies I saw make plays yesterday were Malik Jackson, who made a few very nice plays, and Nacho had a nice play as well. Did I miss anything??

  28. OrangeTsunami says:

    And Steven Johnson as well

  29. tlcat06 says:

Kod, I agree with you about Aaron Rodgers, but we already know you can take Brady away and the team can still play well.

  30. tlcat06 says:

OT Wolfe had good plays, he’s just playing with the starters so it’s hard to remember that, he did his job well yesterday.

  31. HardHitting27 says:

Anybody go to the game? I was curious if anyone knows the name and artist of the song that was played at the start of the game.

With that out of the way. First stringers looked great. Ummmm…… we are in trouble if Manning goes down. None of the backups have impressed. and our D lacks depth so we could be hurting there too.

  32. tlcat06 says:

Name one team besides the Patriots that can be successful if their starting QB goes down.

  33. OrangeTsunami says:

The Cowboys have Orton cat! :P

  34. tlcat06 says:

    LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

OT I love you man, seriously.

  35. tlcat06 says:

These nfl am people are stupid. Anybody who doesn’t have my Broncos winning the AFC West is stupid,

  36. tlcat06 says:

Ohhh good old Matt Cassel. I hate that guy. But I’m over it. I’m over it. I’m over it. WE GOT PEYTON!!!!

  37. 3rdGeneration says:

Malik Jackson was the loan bright star amongst our 3s and 4s.

  38. OrangeTsunami says:

I realize it’s WAY too early to evaluate our draft picks, still being the preseason and all, but I’m a bit on edge after the DP so kindly reminded everyone this morning of how we shot ourselves in the foot with our 2009 draft class…..

Btw, if we cut Moreno, I could see NE picking him up and it coming back to bite us, which is the only thing that could possibly make that situation worse than it already is…. Lol

  39. 3rdGeneration says:

Why are the analysts so high on the Chiefs also? What’s different about that team from a year ago? I can see an argument for the Chargers making a push in our division because they have a great QB in Rivers (who I can’t stand), but I think they’ve gotten worse this off season not better. The Raiders are also essentially the same team. The Broncos are clearly the team that made themselves better this off season and yet no one is showing the love!

  40. Royalbroncofan1 says:

    Good Morning Broncos Country!

Nice final tuneup in the 1st quarter yesterday as Manning & the O got in rythm right of the bat!
49ers were in a 3-4 but rushed more than 3 defensive players plenty.
Loved the audible where Manning saw a big hole right up the middle and handed off to McGhee for a nice gain!
Yes, Stokley made the catch of the day, but Lance Balls’ catch on the go route was nice as well!!
Elvis made on great play on his sack where the 49er OT, tried to cut block him… he bounced off him and kept going!
Some things Broncos definitely need to continue work on, but they made great strides yesterday!

Agree with the refs concern, definitely a big issue at this point.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  41. tlcat06 says:

3rd the Chiefs were really beat up last year. Had they not been I think we would not have made the playoffs. Thank the Lord we did, because we GOT PEYTON. But I think that KC is talented, but as time goes on I do not think they are as good as us.

  42. sndvl says:

My comment about the challenge flag flag was in no way a knock on our HC. It was meant to add proof of the ineptness of these replacements.
    Lol.

Just like that Chi/NYG game I mentioned. The first quarter ended with a devensive penalty. And they ran another play with Zeroes on the clock. I’ve never seen that happen before. Sure if it was the end of a half/game, but the quarter? Even the lack of consistent calls. I saw Cutlet get smacked in the head @ even though I don’t like the guy, it should have been flagged. But wasn’t.
Not to mention the # of holding calls against us, that aren’t being called the same for opposing teams. It’s crazy!!!

  43. killerkod says:

Interested to see who gets cut today………won’t be as tough as the last cuts of course, but it sux losing anyone. But the beauty is that we might actually be able to pick someone else up from teams that are really deep at certain positions.

  44. OrangeTsunami says:

Anyone know what time the first round of cuts due? Btw, after watching the second half of the last two games, I doubt I’ll get my heart broken with any of these cuts…..

  45. killerkod says:

Yeah OT………there wasn’t anything special about any player in that second half……

  46. killerkod says:

I think it’s 4pm EST but I’m not too sure.

  47. CARAMELLOO says:

Morning all! Depth has been a concern for me since day 1! Man there was no heart in the second half. Nate Irving can’t tackle in the open field to save his life. The 2nd straight week he got juked by a QB and the got up slow as if he was hurt. The only thing hurt was his pride.

I also hope Decker an McGhaee will get back to Mile High Saluting after a score like they did last year. That’s one tradition I’d like to see come back and stick!

  48. marshisboss says:

Josh Barrett got released by the Patriots I liked him when he was here

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Josh Barrett was great in special teams for us. Him and Bruton would welcome him back.

Glad Peyton finally showed me something that makes me feel getting rid of our other QB was worth it. Don’t get me wrong, Peyton is GOAT in my book but whether he could bring it was a concern to me at a level that to ME made sense to get read of our former incumbent. Those INTs he was chucking was not giving me the warm and fuzzy feelings (Just my opinion, not really open to debate)

Receivers, Decker looking more sure handed but overall, like last no matter who the QB is, doesn’t matter if receivers drop the pass. Ive liked Willis as well. Bay would be proud of him. He was always very high on him.

No one is really revealing anything in preseason, so i try not to pay too much attention. We are currently a new look team. No real tape on us. Last years tape might as well be japanese compared to this year. I just pray as defenses adjust, we do too and Manning gets more comfortable.

Can’t wait for the season. looking forward to it. Primetime and against a well known defense. Should be great.

    Later days, TRB

  50. raidrhadr says:

Cut deadline is 4 pm eastern today from 90 to 75. I’d like to see us get Barret back too. We need depth at safety for sure. I’m really liking the way our D-linemen are playing. It’s been a long time we had a dominant front 4. When our offense completely hit it’s stride we will be unstopable. Just like back in the late ’90s. I still think we could struggle a bit early in the year. Like maybe 3-3 after wk 6 and 5-4 by the break. I still see 10 wins though…possibly 11.

Here are somef predictions that go against the grain so to speak.

    1. The Chargers will end the season in the cellar in the AFC west. That’s right…last.
    2. The Patriots have peaked and are on the decline…They will be a good team but not make to the AFC championship game.
    3. The Steelers are also a team that has peaked and is on the decline. Todd Haley is a jackwagon and will not improve thier offense. Thier defense is aging a bit and will not be as dominant. The Ravens win that division and Pitt does not even make the playoffs.
