Broncos Up For a Pair of Weekly Awards

December 31st, 2012 - 8:03am by Stuart Zaas

Manning Nominated for FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week

The Broncos’ convincing 38-3 win over the Chiefs in Sunday’s regular-season finale yielded a pair of weekly award nominations for the Broncos.

Quarterback Peyton Manning is up for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week after completing 23-of-29 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns with a QB rating of 144.8 in just three quarters of work in the win. The 144.8 rating is the highest by an AFC passer this season.

Manning is up against his brother, Eli, who passed for 208 yards and five touchdowns in the Giants’ 42-7 win, and Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, who threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns in Minnesota’s Week 17 victory.

This marks the fifth time in 2012 — and second in the past two weeks — that Manning has been nominated for the weekly award.

Watch Manning’s postgame press conference here.

Fans can vote for one player in each category on NFL.com/FedEx from today through 1 p.m. MST on Wednesday to determine the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week. The winners will be announced Wednesday on NFL Total Access on NFL Network and on NFL.com.

Fans will be voting for more than their favorite player. As part of the Air & Ground program and its commitment to small business owners, FedEx will support education efforts at Junior Achievement by making weekly $2,000 donations in each of the winning players’ names. The funding, allocated to local Junior Achievement area offices in that team’s city or state, is used to help U.S. small business development, by educating the next generation of entrepreneurs on how to start and grow their own businesses.

Team Nominated for GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Week

Entering halftime of Denver’s Week 6 contest at San Diego, the 2-3 Broncos faced a 24-point deficit to the Chargers, who were looking to open a a two-game lead in the division.

From that point on, the Broncos outscored their opponents 346-151, a 195-point differential, on their way to 11 straight wins to finish the season as the AFC’s top seed.

That comeback is up for the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the week. Fans can vote for the award at NFL.com/gmc until Wednesday at 1 p.m. MST. The winner will be announced Wednesday during NFL Network’s “Around the League” show and then posted on NFL.com.

After the regular season, fans will have a chance to determine the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Year, from among the 17 weekly winners. Fans can vote for the winner and enter for a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl XLVII on NFL.com/gmc throughout the month of January.

Awwwww. Monday of the bye week feels so good.
Who will we play next? Cincy? Indy? Baltimore? I don’t see a threat there.

I do think that Cincy can beat Houston.

    Let the speculation begin.

Hola Broncmigos!!! What a great time to be cheering for this team! Two years ago we were debating who to take Miller, Peterson or that other guy! Looks like JE made the right choice! (One of Many!) Thank you!!!

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

  3. RH709 says:

    I’m with turtle.

    TYJE

  4. RH709 says:

A.J. Smith and Norv Turner have been fired from the Chargers.
I hope Gruden doesn’t want that job.

  5. RH709 says:

Holiday may be a good luck charm. lol
He is leprechaun size after all.

No more Love from the Bears!!! Wow… guess he should have drafted some OLine!!!

  7. LakeArrowhead says:

RH, I’m predicting Houston goes to New England for the divisional playoffs and this time take care of business. And certainly we get our revenge match with Houston. Either way, Houston or New England coming to Denver for the conference title. Next two weeks, it’s nothing but orange when I go to work.

  8. Bronco_Turtle says:

Heard that Gruden will consider the Bears Position… Can you imagine him with Cutler/Marshall… Could be real interesting

  9. LakeArrowhead says:

Of course the sportsworld would love to see Colts versus Manning in the divisional playoffs, WOW !!!!

  10. LakeArrowhead says:

Gruden definitely would put some fire into that team

  11. Bronco_Turtle says:

Soooo many coaching Vacancies in the league!!!

I hope that Chip Kelly goes to Cleveland! I think with the evolution of the NFL offense his system is going to be very affective… Oregon is consistantly good

  12. Bronco_Turtle says:

Or how about a guy like Cowher in Buffalo with the Defensive pieces that team has already… that makes sense to me, but I keep hearing him in regards to SD…. (also not another guy I want coaching in our division)

  13. LakeArrowhead says:

I like to see Bronco management give Del Rio and McCoy a nice contract, their system certainly is taking hold of this team.
Great chemistry, upcoming draft and free agency can only make the team better.

  14. RH709 says:

I can see Cincy beating Houston. The Bengals get to the QB pretty well and have a good defense. I wouldn’t count them out.

I know the media would have a field day for Luck Vs. Manning in the playoffs. That is ESPNs wet dream. Can’t stand the hype they create out of something so silly.

  15. LakeArrowhead says:

RH, you’re correct. The way Houston has been playing the past few weeks, they have shown that they are vulnerable.
Who would you say can give the Patriots trouble in the divisional round?

  16. RH709 says:

Sadly, the team I see giving NE a fit will never play NE. That is Cincy.

I don’t think the other three teams stand a chance. Maybe Indy but that is one huge maybe.

  17. RH709 says:

From what I have seen and what I know about the NE offense, only the toughest defenses with very very good and fast LB cores stand a chance against NE.

  18. Bronco_Turtle says:

With Gronk back in NE they are a totally different offense than when he is out… So hard to match up with Hernandez/Gronk/Lloyd when they are all in at one time

  19. LakeArrowhead says:

Quick LB’s and pressure on the defensive line to collapse the pocket may throw Brady’s rhythm off.

  20. RH709 says:

Look at the teams that beat NE this year. All had very good defenses with a great LB core. The only playoff team left that fits that description (besides Denver) is the Bengals. But the Bengals have no chance of playing NE.

  21. LakeArrowhead says:

Having that number 1 seed is HUGE !!! I rather be playing in front of the home crowd as my 12th player.

  22. RH709 says:

Baltimore did beat them by a point early in the season but that was in Baltimore and way before the Ravens fell victim to an insane number of injuries to their top defenders.

  23. Bronco_Turtle says:

The teams that Beat NE and gave them Fits were all teams that can bring pressure with their base packages… Athletic LB’s really help in this regard, but Seattle, SF, ARI and BAL all had very good games pushing the pocket from the DT position

  24. RH709 says:

I said it before and Ill say it again. In the Conference finals when NE comes to town. Everyone better get LOUD. Really LOUD. NE can’t go crazy fast hurry up on us if they can’t hear the calls.

  25. RH709 says:

If Houston still had Cushing, I would give them a punchers chance but they don’t.

  26. LakeArrowhead says:

I agree RH, our game with NE earlier in the season had several mistakes. Again this team was going to through growing pains. Our team has totally stepped up in all categories.

  27. LakeArrowhead says:

Heading to work, sporting my Orange and blue from here on out. Everyone have a great day.

  28. tlcat06 says:

I don’t care if McCoy leaves because Tom Moore is salivating at the chance to work with Peyton again. But I need JDR to stay. We need consistency at DC. Can we offer him more money!? Anybody know!? Ugh! If he doesn’t stay I want Lovie Smith.

  29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I personally think Lovie smith was the dumbest firing. Man has kept a strong defense over years and acquired Marshall, Cutler, Forte and Michael Bush for his offense. He has done alot and will be scooped up. I definitely don’t want him in the AFC west.

Chucky coming back? interesting … what makes this even funnier was his once man crush on our former QB TT.

Glad to see norv go, can’t wait for the rebuilding thats gonna happen there. Chiefs might also be getting a new HC as well. And raiders just got allen and are a mess. We are the only consistent team in the west now. And our team is playing at a high level. I see us running the AFC west for a while.

Congrats to Shanahan and RG3. Happy for em. Alfred Morris … looks like he found him another 6th round Rb star. Shanny could always make RBs.

I fear the patriots because of thier tightends. They have the best tight ends, and we have the worst coverage on TEs in the NFL. Altho this year we kept thier TE at bay but were torched every where else. We have improved tho, so I don’t see any of these playoff teams as a threat. Thats the high level the broncos are playing at. Next few weeks will be fun.

    Later days,

    TRB

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

PS: also don’t care if McCoy leaves … everyone makes him out to be some great offensive mind, but most of us fans know he is avg at best. IMO anyway. But he is one of the few hold overs from the Error Era. So maybe there is something to him. Just don’t see it tho.

    TRB

  31. RH709 says:

I have my Decker jersey on at work today.

  32. tlcat06 says:

Alfred Morris ran for 200 yards today. It’s just incredible. RGIII calls him “His Terrel Davis”

  33. tlcat06 says:

TRB, actually, our pass defense is ranked 3rd. So, we have been able to stop TE this year as the year progresses. They will make big plays, it’s about limiting the number of big plays Chris Harris has helped a ton.

  34. RH709 says:

We are ranked highly against the pass but stopping TEs is still the largest hole on this team. A lot has changed since we last played NE. Like loosing Mays, starting Brooking and getting DJ back. Also, the improved play of rookie Trevathan. Woodyard was always good but he has learned the system now and plays faster than he did.

We can beat NE, they are just the largest threat at this point.

  35. 1nOnlyTRB says:

tlcat, we may be the 3rd best pass defense but that in no way means we have done well against tight ends … at all. You can even look at it from a fantasy perspective. We gave up the most points to tight ends. We have never been the best at coverign tightends … thats not a shot at our passing defense … thats just at our TE coverage.

    TRB

  36. tlcat06 says:

I don’t care about NFL fantasy.

All I said was that we ok give up big plays, but it’s about limiting those big plays like Champ said. And I still think we beat NE even with their explosive TE because we’ve improved as a whole unit.

  37. tlcat06 says:

    *will not ok

  38. tlcat06 says:

We gave up plays in the Baltimore game but it didn’t end up mattering because we made more plays than they did. All I’m saying is that I still think we can beat them.

  39. tlcat06 says:

I’d be more worried about pressuring Tom Brady than stopping their tight ends. Sacking Tom Brady is how you beat New England.

  40. louisianabroncofan says:

hey cat! whats up trb, rh? ya know if we can get porter back that will help with covering those tight ends. it is a slight concern. the brady manning matchup is one i really hope we get to see and we get that sweet revenge on our way to the super bowl title. talk about a dream year!!

  41. tlcat06 says:

    What’s up LBF?!

  42. louisianabroncofan says:

and there it is. the thing we have to do if we face the pats is pressure brady. he CANNOT sit back and pick us apart or we’ll be in a shootout and a win will be hard. of course we have manning slinging it right along with brady but i’d rather get a big win and alot of momentum heading to the super bowl then a game that wears the team out while we squeak out a win. del rio will have something for the pats be sure of that.

  43. louisianabroncofan says:

i gotta tell ya cat i’m a little jealous. I havent been on here hardly at all so i didnt get to see the nay sayers about manning and elway we battled in the offseason transform into big time elway and manning fans! man that wouldve been fun to watch! it was mannings gonna be out in week 2….elway doesnt know what the heck he’s doin……we’ll be 5-11 if were lucky….no way manning has anything left…..and on and on. we tried to tell them tho, ya know? that being said i’m so glad we got our fellow fans back to reality, i love to see all the love on here now!!!!!!

  44. tlcat06 says:

I agree LBF, we just have to keep our identity. Houston didn’t and they lost because of it.

  45. tlcat06 says:

LBF, it’s taken some of these guys longer than you’d think to become full out Manning fans.

  46. dwalls2 says:

Question: If the Broncos win on the 12th, what time will the Conference Championship be? Or, is that determined by what other teams are playing that day?

  47. tlcat06 says:

Conference Championship will be at 4:30 on the 20th. Regardless of anything else. It’s already been set.

  48. tlcat06 says:

Turner and Smith officially out of San Diego.

  49. louisianabroncofan says:

well i think manning pretty much forced some naysayers into reality. i mean what a year! just like we thought he picked up right where he left off and made us an instant super bowl contender. it is soooo sweet to be here now knowing how it was going on here between us and them then. absolute vindication for us to put it lightly! but the main thing is the team is back on top where they belong and i think elway is just getting started. manning has at least 2 more years to go and with elway running things and fox coaching, we should contend every year for the next 2-3 years. how exciting!! i’m in heaven i gotta tell ya.
