Broncos TV’s Look at Special Teams

February 8th, 2013 - 9:09am by Gray Caldwell

In the spirit of Top 10 Tuesdays, which has looked at Peyton Manning’s Top 10 Touchdown Passes, Von Miller’s Top Ten Plays and the best offensive plays of the season, today is Top Five Friday.

Today, Broncos TV takes a look at the top five special teams plays of the season.

5: Irving’s Blocked Punt
Up just 10-7 in the rematch with the San Diego Chargers, linebacker Nate Irving followed a third-down sack by Von Miller with a big play of his own. He blocked Mike Scifres’ punt, giving Denver the ball at the San Diego 31-yard line. It took Peyton Manning just one play to find Brandon Stokley for a touchdown and a 17-7 halftime lead.

4: Bruton’s Punt Deflection
The second of the Broncos’ third-quarter touchdowns against Oakland was set up on special teams by safety David Bruton, who got a hand on a Shane Lechler punt, causing it to travel only 2 yards. The Broncos to start their ensuing drive in Oakland’s red zone, and running back Willis McGahee found the end zone en route to a rout.

3: Trindon Holliday Swings Momentum in Carolina
With the Panthers and Broncos tied at 7-7, Holliday took matters into his own hands. He raced 76 yards down the sideline on a punt return for a touchdown — his second return score in as many weeks. After Holliday’s touchdown return, Denver outscored Carolina 22-7 the rest of the way.

2: Holliday’s Quick Impact
In his first game returning kicks as a Bronco, Holliday took advantage. He took the second-half opening kickoff back 105 yards for Denver’s first kickoff return touchdown since the 2010 season. That gave Denver a 17-3 lead and helped the club dispatch the Bengals.

1: Holliday Makes History
In the Broncos’ Divisional Round game against the Baltimore Ravens, Holliday returned the first punt he touched for the longest punt return touchdown in NFL playoff history. He followed that up with what was the longest kickoff return touchdown in NFL playoff history in one of the best special teams playoff performances in franchise — and league — history.

What do you think of the list?

I want an 18 game season with only an 8 team – division winners – playoffs.

    KEEP THE KICKOFF!!!

    Hi guys!

Nasty we dont have the money for them. Even after some cuts and restructures making that much money is going to be difficult.

DB, we all love football and want more games but it would be a terrible thing. This game is already way too brutal on the human body.

  4. Bronconasty says:

i think we should cut, Kuper, Adams, Ball, Mays, Caldwell, Julius Thomas, DJ as cap casualties. you cant keep them all plus Philip Blake could take over for Kuper. then we could sign some free agents such as Shonne Greene or Turner, Urlacher and maybe a Amendola but hes a long shot

  5. Bronconasty says:

I want a Dashon Goldson!! or Byrd

    Ball is a RFA.

I’d take Goldson, or Landry… But prefer ED REED!!!!

    BRING THAT RING TO D-TOWN!!!

DB, only 18 games?!? And you call yourself a football fan….!!! I’m all for 24 games!!! I’d be down with 6 months of football… 83 man Rosters, the whole Shabang…!!! BRING IT ON!!!

I’d give Kuper another year. He had a 1 year string of dab luck. You just can’t give up on a stud O-Lineman like him. He was a great player until a few injuries inside of a year. He’s far to valuable. When he’s on the field Kuper is our best player on the O-Line except for Clady.

  9. strandoftds82 says:

Looks like the Dolphins are making a push to re-sign Hartline before FA starts.

  10. alaskanbronco06 says:

Ball is a RFA. Mays I agree with and can be ok with JT Caldwell and Adams if we went after a safety. Im not one fore cutting DJ if he is willing to restructure his contract. Kuper dont agree with. Ramirez improved but isnt Kupers level and Blake is a mystery. He got hurt early and no one but the staff saw him.

Byrd will be tagged by the Bills if they cant get a deal done. Dont see Niners letting Goldson go unless they go after another safety. One safety to look at is Moore. Not Rahim but William Moore from ATL. He isnt demanding a big contract and could be had pretty cheap but I dont see ATL letting him go in all honesty.

Urlacher is going to want more than we can afford to. To get a big time RB we would need to move/cut McGahee IMO. Amendola is going to likely test FA but Rams arnt worried about bringing him back.

Its a nice wish list but looking at what we roughly have and Clady needing to be brought back its highly unlikely. Even with other cuts and restructures IMO.

    Whats up Turtle!

  12. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yup Strand and Dolphins arnt worried about Bush walking or not because how his backup (Cant think of his name at the moment) has stepped up. I know you want him but much like Greene wed have to move cut McGahee to create time for him and help make more cap space.

    New blog.

AD, I saw that the Bills are around 30 million under the Cap. If I’m the Bills I’d Tag Byrd, and work out a long term deal with him. He’s worth it.

  15. oldsouthstander says:

Urlacher is an over the hill LB who’s recent string of injuries make his best decision retirement. Pay mega bucks for someone who’ll be lucky to play half the season??? Not a wise choice of cap money. Cut Kuper?? How fast we forget that he was elected a team captain. THere’s a reason he got that. His outstand9ing ablility. 2012 was plagued by injuries. The time off should get him back to the Kuper of old.
