ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The Broncos have acquired fullback Chris Gronkowski in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for cornerback Cassius Vaughn, the team announced on Wednesday.
“We have a lot of depth in our secondary and this was an opportunity for us to add a quality fullback to our roster,” Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway announced via Twitter.
Gronkowski has played 21 games during his career with Dallas (2010) and Indianapolis (2011). He’s gained 17 yards on five carries and 35 yards on seven receptions, including a receiving touchdown.
Chris is one of three Gronkowski brothers currently on NFL rosters along with Rob (New England) and Dan (Cleveland), who spent the 2010 season with the Broncos. He played college football at Maryland (2005-06), overlapping with Dan, before transferring to Arizona, where he played with Rob (2007-09).
They are they looking to become the fifth set of brothers to play for the Broncos in the regular season, joining Champ and Boss Bailey, Albert and Paul Carmichael, Eldon and William Danenhauer and Dave and Doug Widell.
Gronkowski played both fullback and linebacker during college – in addition to spending a year on the baseball team at Arizona.
Vaughn, who joined the team as a college free agent in 2010, played 22 games and registered 22 tackles with one interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Don’t like seeing Cassius go. But our secondary is deep and moves were going to be made. At least we were able to acquire a player with good pedigree. Let’s hope he’s more like Rob and less like Dan…lol

We needed a good quality pass blocking FB. Especially for Manning! I do think Vaughn was a great returner and he looked to have some good CB skills, his skills just didn’t live up to the ones we already in Bailey, Porter, Florence, and the up and coming rookie Bolden!! He would’ve been cut, especially since he suffers through injuries, and we got a quality player at a position that we desperately needed! Great move FO!!!
Before I head to the park for the day gotta state my view on this trade.
I like it. Cassius Vaugh was good but we signed Porter and Florence and drafted Bolden. I think Vaughn was going to end up cut. Glad to see we got a player who I dont know much about but can compete for a position we are weak at IMO and has a better chance to make it that isnt crowded since I think hes the 2 or 3rd FB on roster now.
Im out now. The girlfriends up and ready to go the the park. Gonna go ride some rides then propose. Going to be a fun worrisome day for me.

Having Elway back, and making, some great moves . So exciting, everyday I ‘m checking my phone for updates.
Interestingly, I think that the move matters on several different levels. Vaughn was gaining in his ability as a return man before he was injured. Enough so that Elway and Fox must think that the team is not deficient in the speed or return departments. Fox has never been a coach that “needed” a fullback. Most of his running offense utilizes a two back set but both backs are true running backs. Bringing in Gronkowski is a continuance of “Elway’s Philosophy” of football which mandates a strong presence at the fullback position. I think that it’s a great move. Welcome to the Broncos Mr. Gronkowski.

Can’t believe you guys are mad Vaughn was traded? He was horrible at coverage with 10 yard cushions off the receiver. The only good thing he’s done was have us a pick six and a kick return of a TD.
