Last big time Bama player i remember is Bobby Humphrey. Man that was a long time ago. Elway earned a B in my book. Pretty good so far, but there is always room to improve.
I thought Oakland gave up their 1st round to Cinci?
Hi Big Red… Welcome.. I like watching Humphrey’s play…
Welcome aboard Bigphred!
DO – you are correct.. NE also has 2 first rounders.. Maybe we could get an accurate draft order??

Welcome Bigphred. Always glad to see newcomers to the blog.
Welcome, Bigphred. Yeah, Humphrey didn’t work out too well, unfortunately, but Jeremiah Castille played in the late 80′s with Elway. Other than that, there haven’t been any other Bama players that I can remember. Sort of strange to me in a way, but I’m just prejudiced toward our players….the good ones that is.
Bama will have nine players at the Combine this year, besides the 13 in the draft, so maybe there will be one on the roster this year….although, I’m not holding my breath.
@Weatherman: Saw your comment about free agency, and I understand what you’re saying, but it can also be looked at (in similar car terms) as the lease had been paid up (contract terms expired) and now it can be sold to whomever is willing to pay the price. For instance, Darren Sproles was an excellent free agent signing last year, among others. Maybe there’s a good one out there for the Broncos, as well.
Morning all. Intrigued by all the positions that need filling. As far as SS goes, I do think Dawkins needs to retire and become our Safety coach. He has play making ability and the skill to teach these young pups how to react to what’s going happening on the line or incoming receivers.
Well, in the final power rankings, Denver finished 12th…not too bad. Though I don’t understand how we finished behind Cincy (we did beat them afterall) and Atlanta at 10 is kind of a shocker…

I’d also like to see Dawkins cut his teeth as a position coach under Fox and JDR.. I think he has the knowledge and passion to be a great assistant in the NFL, not sure how much he’s got left in the tank.. I’d rather see him help the other guys, and apply his salary to a FA, then risk a career ending and life altering injury.. Going out on your own terms should not be taken for granted..
Looked like it based on record than how we did head to head. Surprised by that as well sndvl. By the way thanks for the heads up on the TT interview.
As much as I love Dawk………I also think it’s time to hang them up and get into coaching. Not that I don’t think he can still play……..but not at the level he needs to and prob more of the level he expects for himself. And what’s the point of risking further injury at this point in his career?
I think he’s an asset to the broncos……….and I hope we can retain him in some fashion. He inspires others to play hard and he has so much experience to pass on to our younger players.
and welcome to the barn bigphred! Looking forward to reading your opinions.
Welcome Bigphred!!! Glad to have you.
I got to see the Chicago Blackhawks take on my Edmonton Oilers (My other favorite sports team) last week in Edmonton and what a game it was………we beat them 8-4. Being able to cheer for 8 goals was remarkable and something you don’t see all too often in hockey.
It was so good to have my sports fix…………I’ve been missing Broncos football so so much since they were ousted.
GO BRONCOS!
Well hubby bought the replay so I get to watch all of the Denver games again. I know their re-peats but it beats waiting all those months.
You know what I was thinking, NE lost the superbowl because they aquired the curse of McDaniels LOL.
Thanks for making a fellow Bronco feel welcome! I guess my time will be taken rooting for the UNM Lobo hoopsters, waiting for the combine. Have plenty of saved Bronco stuff on DVR to help my wait. Heres to a great draft. Be wise, men (FEX)
Remember the key FA`s we got in 1997, the first year we won the SB, Neil Smith, Alfred Williams, Chester McGlockton, and Darion Gordon ring a bell. When contracts end, sometimes a team thinks a player is asking for to much money. Thats my take on FA in one aspect.
Bigphred, Welcome to the show!!
I like Rainey too. In the senoir bowl practices, he was burning the defenses whenecer he touched the ball. I want him!! I wonder what round Chris Rainey is projected at? I`m curious.
You all remember Gaston Green? He was a heck of a back in the latter days of HC Dan Reeves.
Heck of a RB I meant.
strand,
CDSsports.com has Rainey ranked 117 going in the 3-4 rds..
We also better take a long look at Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama. This kid is about as fast as Rainey, and great in his position.
Overview
Overshadowed for much of his career by former teammate Joe Haden, Jenkins emerged in his junior season as one of the most instinctive and competitive young cornerback prospects in the country. He surprised many with the decision to return for his senior campaign after earning First Team All-SEC honors from the media and second-team recognition from conference coaches. Rather than return for a triumphant senior season, however, Jenkins was kicked off the team by new head coach Will Muschamp following the star cornerback’s second arrest of the off-season. After briefly considering the supplemental draft, Jenkins transferred to Northern Alabama.
True freshman capable of standing out immediately in the SEC are rare, but that is precisely what Jenkins accomplished, becoming only the second Gator cornerback to ever start his first collegiate game. Jenkins earned Freshman All-SEC accolades in 2008 with 39 tackles, 11 passes broken up and three interceptions and followed up a year later with very similar numbers (38 tackles, six passes broken up, two interceptions) despite the fact that opponents knew by then to target tight ends and running backs rather than challenge the Gators? talented cornerback duo of Haden and Jenkins.
With Haden plying his trade with the Cleveland Browns, the pressure was on Jenkins to perform in 2010 and he certainly did, registering a career high 43 tackles and matching his previous high of three interceptions (along with eight more passes broken up) despite the fact that he was limited for much of the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The injury would force Jenkins to the sideline for the Outback Bowl, but is not expected to hinder him this season for Terry Bowden’s UNA Lions, a Division II school.
Analysis
Read & React: Rare anticipatory skills. Sneaks a peek into the backfield and anticipates routes very well. Possesses as good a break on the ball as any cornerback in the country. Will get himself in trouble as he?s highly aggressive and thus, susceptible to double-moves, but possesses the quick feet, loose hips and good speed to recover if the quarterback doesn?t attack immediately. Quick to react to the run.
Man Coverage: Low, quick backpedal. Loose hips and smooth acceleration. Easily changes directions to mirror receivers. Doesn?t have great size, but flashes good physicality in press coverage. Gets a good initial jam on the receiver and has the agility to turn and run downfield.
Zone Coverage: Good awareness for zone coverage. Has a good feel for the receivers and their routes due to film preparation and keeps his eyes trained on the quarterback. Can drift when he sees the quarterback focusing on an area and is therefore susceptible to savvy passers. Quick to react to the thrown pass and converge on the ball.
Closing/Recovery: Very good downhill closing speed due to his willingness to gamble by reading the quarterback?s eyes as well as exceptionally quick feet. Times his leap well and has good ball skills for the INT. Can extend and pluck outside of his frame. Good vision and elusiveness for the return.
Run Support: An underrated component to his game. Reads run quickly and isn?t afraid to go inside the box. Fights through the receiver block and is willing to take on bigger ball-carriers. Good lateral agility to break down in space.
Tackling: A bit inconsistent in this area, though he?s more physical and typically a more reliable open field tackler than most at his position. Will lead with his shoulder trying to make the highlight reel hit and leave himself vulnerable to missed tackles. Will sell out for the PBU/interception and, if he misses, leave the receiver running away from him. Takes good angles in pursuit and breaks down to make the secure stop against elusive athletes in the open field.
Intangibles: Started 37 of 40 games over his career; missing only one (2010 Outback Bowl) due to injury. Showed his toughness by playing through a torn labrum in his right shoulder nearly the entire season. Injury worsened throughout the year, forcing him to miss the Outback Bowl to have surgery to repair it. Arrested in May, 2009 for his role in a fight. Was tasered and originally charged with affray and resisting arrest without violence, both misdemeanors. The affray charge was later dropped. Was arrested twice in the span of four months following the 2010 season for marijuana possession. His second arrest prompted new Florida head coach Will Muschamp to kick him off the team, leading to Jenkins’ transfer to North Alabama.

Jenkins does have a down side needing to be considered too:

Seweatherman1, I just now read up on your post on him, very impressive. Six blocked punts, I really like the him. The Stalking of his ex-girlfriend was a big no no. I hope he learned his lesson. Young and foolish mistake.
I also like Rainey but I wonder whats up with his side kick at Florida. Demps is wicked fast too so how come no one is mentioning him? Any one who watches the Gator’s know the names Demps and Rainey.
He’s not listed on the CBSsports.com Draft list. I’m going to have to check on Demps. I thought that he was coming out, but may not be.
This report from Tampa Bay Times
Demps will stick with UF track

GAINESVILLE — His football career at Florida over, senior running back Jeff Demps will focus on track and the 2012 Olympics and compete for the Gators in track this year.
The five-time track and field All-American and four-time NCAA champion sprinter wants to vie for a spot on the U.S. track and field team. He won’t attend college football all-star games or NFL draft workouts.
“I can have the mind-set of a full-time track guy now,” he said.
He started training with UF’s track team this week and hopes to compete at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet next month.
I just now checked on Walterfootball, Rainey is projected at the 4th round at #110. That gives us an idea.
I wish he was coming to the draft. Lightning fast for sure. He is training for the olympics. Can’t say I blame him there either.

Yea strand. I think his off field issues cost him some in the draft. Teams are beginning to look at those more and more now, as they should. No sense bringing a potential loose cannon on the team if there is someone else better in the public relation end of it.
Looks like Tebow is already involved in politics.
It’s unclear how many potential future NFL players have slipped through the cracks in Virginia, never to see their potential realized due to the state’s strict laws outlining who can and who cannot play high school football.
Thanks to a new law that passed by a vote of 59 to 39 in the Virginia House of Delegates, however, tens of thousands of home-schooled students in the state are one step closer to being able to play sports at their local high school.
The “Tebow Bill,” named in honor of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow , who played high school football in Florida while being home schooled, will now be sent to the Virginia Senate, according to The Washington Post .
“Home-school parents pay taxes like everybody else,” Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) recently told the newspaper. “It’s just fair.”
The legislation has been introduced in Virginia since 2005 with little success, according to The Post. McDonnell has pledged to sign the bill if it passes both chambers.

Oh how #11 would have been, BUT the miracles kept coming. Missed FG, dropped INT, and a run-out-of-bounds, plus the Steeler wounded put the Broncos at #25 with MANY positions to fill. The 2011 Miracle year puts EFX back another year.
Broncos are sending smoke screens about drafting a QB. They will bring in a vat though. The idea of drafting one is a smoke screen!!!!!
I hope Tebow gets another weapon at WR to go along with E. Decker and D. Thomas. Would like to see Michael Floyd in the Orange and Blue colors
i know it wont happen but i would love to see justin blackman fall to 25 and denver grab him
Need DE or DT or a killer MLB in 1st round.
I would be willing to bet that we take one of the those positions in the 1st round. Fox knows how to build a winning football team.
i think denver should grab a DT, CB,and a RB before they grab a WR imo
I give Mr Elway (don’t call him John you don’t have the right) a solid B. First year back and as GMFO I think he did good. Def wouldn’t have hire Josh McDou… Looking forward to some quality time with Tim. You can coach up accuracy and footwork, you can’t coach up leadership. Tim has leadership.
@randy, DT would be good.
@steph, as much as I would like to see a Blackman fall….. buh duh dunt.
I don’t see Blackmon falling far enough to give us a chance at him. Dudes a beast and will go probably in the first 10. He seems that good. We need another R Smith, EddieMac, and Sharpe. I might blow a nut thinkin’ about that trio….. oops, clean up isle me
