Broncos to Honor Colorado Olympians

September 4th, 2012 - 5:17pm by Stuart Zaas

A dozen Colorado athletes who competed in the London 2012 Olympic Games will be honored as Broncos Country Heroes during the first quarter of Denver’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Sunday (6:30 p.m. MDT kickoff).

As part of the celebration, Centennial resident and Regis Jesuit High School student Missy Franklin will serve as an honorary captain and accompany the rest of the Broncos’ captains to midfield for the pregame coin toss. Franklin captured four gold medals and one bronze in her Olympic swimming debut last month.

Franklin, who visited a Broncos practice at Dove Valley earlier this year, earned gold medals in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 4×200m freestyle and 4×100m medley — in addition to a bronze in the 4×100m freestyle.

Other 2012 Olympic medalists include Taylor Ritzel (gold, rowing), granddaughter of former Broncos Head Coach Red Miller; Clarissa Chun (bronze, wrestling); and Janay DeLoach (bronze, long jump).

Below is a look at the 12 Colorado Olympians who will be honored by the Broncos on Sunday:

    *** Official Game score Prediction***
    Steelers win 17-14

Hoping to be wrong but I think some folks are underestimating how difficult a comeback in the NFL is…I think Manning will have a slow start. (I’ve said so before) I think by the time that Manning is firing on all cylinders, our depth issues will rear their ugly heads.

  2. DaddyBronc says:

Very sorry for your loss BT.

  3. DaddyBronc says:

Puts a huge smile on my face!

Turtle, so very sorry to read bout your grandfather. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

A big HELLO to everyone else! Hope you folks are doing well, and I’m sure y’all are pumped to the gill that the season is finally about to start. I know I am!

Have been trying to keep up with the blog and comments, but no time to shoot the breeze anymore. Catch you all later…..Go Broncos!

  7. Tide Bronco says:

And Roll Tide! Gonna be a great year!

  8. DaddyBronc says:

Hey Tide! I thought you might have fallen off…seeing as how it has been so long between posts. Good to see you back. Have you thought about how you would assess the team now that cuts are complete?

  9. Tide Bronco says:

Oh no, Daddy. I’m still on the bandwagon and will be through thick and thin. I’m not really sure how things are going to pan out for the Broncos this season, but I’m optimistic, to say the least. Same way with Bama. Same as with the Broncos last year. Just have to wait and see, but it will be fun to watch when I have the time. I’ve started a new children related business venture, so my time is very limited right now and I’ve been working from can to can’t. Didn’t even get to watch many of the pre-season games, so I’m not as “up” on things as I normally am this time of year, but “you do what you gotta do,” you know? And I’m loving running a business again and the monetary benefits ain’t bad either. Gotta run, and I’ll be just as scarce as I have been, but wanted to let Turtle know I was thinking about him, and to tell everyone else hello. Take care and enjoy the season. Will pop in when I can.

DB, they are a little crazy. I honestly was not as prepared as I should’ve been, but I’m cracking down! Gonna get some structure in this group yet! LOL no, they love me and I love them. Got some of the girls excited about football and their dads think its awesome!

    Official Score Prediction

    Steelers 24
    Broncos 30

  20. tlcat06 says:

Kod! Morning!!! Me too!!! But Sunday is only 4 days away!

Just stopping in for a quick post to say ITS KICKOFF DAY!!!!!!

    Also for the score prediction.

Steelers are older and slower on D. Missing a lot of key components. Clark will be out as will Harrison most likely. Steelers are very hurt all around at LB and their front 3 (The DL since they run 3-4) havnt been up to par this preseason or the end of last year. Offensively Steelers Oline is way below average and is coming of leading the NFL in sacks allowed last year. Mendenhall is out. Big Ben is still having issues with his ankle and also having issues with his throwing shoulder and hand. Mike Wallace will be a bit off. Big Ben will look not the best. Our offense may get off slow but our first string D especially the pass rush will be a lot for the Steelers Oline to handle.

Guys I dont think its going to be as close as many think. Steelers are declining due to injuries and age.

    OFFICIAL SCORE PREDICTION

    Broncos 38 – Steelers 17

(Side note I think we sack Big Ben at least 6 times and cause at least 3 INTs)

  22. killerkod says:

yup, and I’m anxiously counting down every second!

  23. OrangeTsunami says:

Roll Tide indeed! You know I got that Alabama blood in me! :D

  24. OrangeTsunami says:

Hey AB, I heard Mendenhall might be a go on Sunday

  25. alaskanbronco06 says:

OT Ive read that but not just few weeks ago Mendenhall was behind on his return adn wasnt expected to return till end of the season. He is not doing that great in his rehab. Just a ploy by Tomlin to make Fox and the team think and wonder about it. If he does I will be shocked and will laugh when he gets hurt again. Rushing someone back from the injury he sustained is not a good thing to do. THen again these are the Steelers who allowed Big Ben to play on a messed up ankle…..

  26. killerkod says:

    Mornin OT and AB!

AB, did I read a while back that you would be off the blog for a while? Glad you’re still around!

I agree, I think it’s just a ploy as well………either way, our D will be ready to face whoever lines up across from them. And when we beat them, they can’t use the excuse that Ben wasn’t 100%.

  27. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yeah Kod. I said that and was for extreme personal reasons but things have settled a bit and isnt as bad as I first thought,

Also every team keep the possibility for big key players to play the game every week of every season. Steelers did this last year for our playoff game as well with 3 or 4 guys and not officially saying to game time.

  28. killerkod says:

well, I’m glad everything is good man!

  29. OrangeTsunami says:

Morning kod, glad you’re sticking around AB.

I hope we grind down that defense early, with a couple of long scoring drives.. That should be our game plan each week IMO.

  30. Royalbroncofan1 says:

    Good Morning Broncos Country!

ESPN reported yeserday James Harrison will play but most likely be in a rotation mode.

  31. Royalbroncofan1 says:

Glad to see you back, ab!

  32. alaskanbronco06 says:

Harrison I wasnt sure. But if he only plays rotational still isnt back full time and might not be the impact he normally can be.

    OT I agree.

Also any fantasy football players out there have a question. Marshawn Lynch may or may not play in the Seahawks game and my lineups have to be filled an hour before kickoff tonight. In multiple leagues I have Lynch and I cant decide if I should bench him or take a risk. Any advice/thoughts would be nice. I am leaning towards bench because I also have Turbin who will start in his place and even if Lynch starts Turbin will still see a lot of carries.
