Broncos Sign S Jones, Place Shaw on IR

December 3rd, 2008 - 6:09pm by Jake Grilley

The Broncos signed free agent safety Herana-Daze Jones on Wednesday and placed defensive tackle Josh Shaw on their reserve/injured list.

Jones is a fourth-year safety played in three games for Cincinnati earlier this season before being waived on Nov. 4. Jones spent his first three professional seasons with the Bengals after they signed him as a college free agent in 2005 from the University of Indiana. He led Cincinnati in special-teams tackles during each of the last two seasons.

Shaw suffered a left elbow injury on Sunday at the New York. He saw time in five games for the Broncos this year and posted three tackles.

  2. JayCutler4MVP says:

they signed this guy cuz shaw went down. and need safety depth.

  3. bronc fan in WA says:

doesnt suprise me to see them pick up a safety since our other players are getting healthy…..

hopefully barrett and fox will continue to perform and manuel stay consistent.

overall i think this new guy will be special teamer only

  4. cbracken2 says:

umm…. Cant we find anyone better to play special teams than a safety who is an outcast from a horrible team? This is getting sad.

  5. 66forHOF says:

REALY, another player on IR!!! Hopeuly our Linebackers Williams and Webster will be ready for the game sunday and Bailey too, Champ not Boss.

  6. shawn723 says:

this guy is only a special teamer, shanny said fox is starting this week and the way barret played last week, he will back either safety up.. this guy is only a replacement.

    what happened to selvin young?

  8. columbusOHbronco says:

i hope that we take a saftey with our first pick next year. im tired of this rotating door of horrible safties we have going this year.

  9. 66forHOF says:

Yeah, I agree I like Reshard Johnson from Alabama. If he’s around by the time the broncos are up they should take him.

  10. jazzyfrizzle says:

we really need safety’s and we need some quality DT’s. We have the corners to make the picks, but i just checked nfl.com and we are 2nd to last in the NFL in picks. We have five picks, even the chiefs have ten. Only the lions are worse, 2 picks. I know it is partially to the fact that champ has been out. but he only sees the ball on his side a few times a game, if that. Our reason for lack of picks is a lacking line and crap safety’s. The only guys worth keeping on our line is Doom and ekuban, but even he is getting old. Either that or we just suck at finding DC’s that are worth anything. Now I rarely complain, even when we are struggling. But this little episode was sparked five dang picks. Thats pretty bad.

  11. bronc fan in WA says:

we should use our first pick for the safety Mays from USC. hes really good

  12. sly td 30 says:

I just hope he can play and be fast to the ball

  13. baileythebronco says:

well mays is a lot better then reshard johnson but a safety should be taken in the 2nd round and william moore should be in the conversation from missourri. And we do need a true middle linebacker still guys webster and larsen are both outside linebackers naturally, and niko obviously isnt worth the roster spot. we need d linemen but we should wait till next year. and i know our line is good but if we get an opportunity to get duke robinson from oklahoma to put next to clady when hamilton is done, it’d be a crazy dominating line for years to come. wait till next years draft and get ndamakin suh from nebraska that guy is crazy good. but you also gotta realize there is a 90% chance none of this will happen so i trust shanny 100% in his drafting abilities. just look at what he has done in the past.

AND I LOVED the mile high salute hillis laid down the other week i wanna see more saluting and more running bitches over.

GO JOSH BELL, you gotta love this kid, he has the attitude we need on this team i think we have a future number one in this kid. but i thought that about foxy too. we did have in in darrent but thats nobodys fault. jack could develope into that perfect number 2. and i hope foxy doesnt sign with the falcons next year, he’ll be a free agent itd be nice to see him back, especially now knowing he is capable of being a number one cornerback in this league

dont forget about torain, next year he has to be the guy in the back field, figure out a way to keep this kid healthy and dont forget about him fans we want 42 on the field

  14. Gami3it says:

This is crazy…Im gonna be so sad to see some people go during the offseason…..as for this dude….we’ll accept the help….doesnt hurt

  15. MileHighMagic08 says:

I’m sure Shanahan knows what’s best for the team and he will make better draft choices than any of us would. I say our offense is solid and Baileythebronco, getting another offensive linemen would be nice, but we need help on defense. We will have a great line with Clady and Harris for years to come. Just imagine a Palamalu or an Ed Reed on our team. Our D line has been bad but I know Roberson,Thomas, Dumervil, Moss, and Peterson will improve. We need that killer safety. Peterson got the game ball against the Jets even tough for us fans other performances stood out. He took charged.

  16. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Of course, Jets fans think we fake our injuries. If they knew or injury status, they’d be singing a different tune. In any case, finally we’re getting some healthy bodies back. It’s about time!

  17. Bones1965 says:

I SAY START CHAMP AT SAFETY.

    START CHAMP AT SAFETY.

It is a bit too early but,I agree with whoever sad we should look at Taylor Mays from USC….this kid is good..at 6’3 230s with speed in the 4.30s range..I read it from the collegescouting website that his trainer said they could easily bulk him up to 250s but decided not to..I would be so great if he could be here with Barrett…
two other DB prospects, Harris from Oklahoma and Macho Harris VT..Royal could sway this kid here…
and baileythebronco is absolutely right about getting more talented O-linemen..although we got Kori and Pulumbus was it??still would hurt to see more help….
however, the D needs the most help.
Anyways, enough my early draft talks..Wish the best this coming weekend..

Larsen is NOT an outside LB! He’s an MLB, and it’s why he started, played, and excelled @ Arizona. I dont know where these ideas come from but some are really out there. Webster is an aging LB who wouldnt be starting for any other team. If we’re going to make costly mistakes, I say those mistakes should be made by the young guys as part of their learning experience, and progression. Not by aging veterans who not only have no upside left, but they’re on the way down…Webster should be a #2 LB, and a special teams contributor like Mario Haggans. We have to build for next year. Playing Webster isnt going to make us any better than we’ve been the past 4 weeks. We’re improving, the rookies are gaining experience and confidence. Let’s keep moving forward, not backward. We want DJ/Champ/Selvin back however, we do need them.

I still say try Barrett/Woodyard as our safetys! That combo could be a good one. God knows Shanahan’s tried enough experiments this year, I dont think trying Woodyard at another position just to keep him on the field is a big risk. At the very worst, he goes back to LB! How bad is that? Not so much…

  21. mooncamping says:

I wonder why they would sign a special teams standout at safety. Those guys tend to be hitters, and they rack up a lot of tackles. What does that say about the distribution of tackles among the defense? Are the linebackers getting too many tackles, while the d-line is not getting enough?
The defense has been surprisingly effective, but they are allowing themselves to play college
style, fly to the ballcarrier type football, while the secondary seems designate to just punctuate
occasionally, almost as if they weren´t allowed to look effective. This is all fine and dandy,
until you hit the playoffs, and such ravenous defenses are picked apart by teams with bigger
playbooks. I don´t propose a solution, but haven´t the NFL contributors earned the free agent
market to be open all year. If there is so much criticism and doubt, why not start wheeling
and dealing while the Broncos are not exactly commited to being in the playoffs. The players
have played exceptionally well, these past weeks. Why not shop them around while they are
hot? Each new prospect is treated like it´s hot potatoes, until they perform. Meanwhile
other potentially great players are foregone. If you have money and connections, and are
not satisfied with the overall play of let´s say the linebackers, why not get a new set all
at once? Risking sounding stupid here, but what´s all the tenseness about?
Cord Gray from Arkansas is my favorite for the next draft. Look these guys up, before
    they are taken, I say.

  22. brian_schneider says:

So what’s the deal here, are we just signing these guys to 1 yr deals? When we get completely healthy again we’ll have like 3 or 4 deep for depth. Which considering this season isn’t a bad idea. I just wondering about the the cap room we have when the draft comes around.

  23. shawn723 says:

r u serious mooncamping?? this isnt baseball u dont trade away all ur young talent for up and coming stars. Do u understand how good this D will b once we get a little older. Come next year we could have woodyard DJ and LArsen all together. Well boss will b there too… to go along with that barret will have more experience and from what im hearing on espn, we r going to b in the running for albert Haynesworth come this offseason. I say screw trading and just work our young talent, sign Haynesworth to go with robertson, and then get another safety in the draft and the D will b solidified for years and years and yearss to come cause were already set at corner with dre champ jack and bell

Anyone seriously know what happened to Powell?

He was and still is listed on the PUP list but to my knowledge if a player is on the PUP list pass week 12 (I think) and they can’t play they must be placed on IR. Are we going to see Powell or not this year?

    Please email me tu_hurricane11@yahoo.com

  25. acidburn05 says:

I saw a couple of coments on a safety only been worth a second round pick , ,well remember the late Sean Taylor. If its a safety like him and knowing our needs we could even give a high first round. Sean to me is the value of a #1 pick. RIP ST

  26. greekbronco9 says:

Why does everyone keep talking about Larsen being a great MLB??? There is a reason they moved him to fullback to start the year and there is a reason why they moved him back to offense with Webster’s return. He’s a decent MLB at best. He has good pursue angles and makes plays on the outside, but he can’t get off a lineman’s block to save his life and never attacks the line of scrimage unless its to the outside. Whoever said earlier that he should be moved to outside is absolutely right!

  27. hrdnokd says:

I don’t think anyone is saying he’s a great MLB as much as we’re all saying he’s a better player ALREADY than Webster. Am I the only one that saw Barrett making plays out there Sunday? What gives, another safety added to the line up? If I have to see #33 flopping around out there one more time….put the rookie in already!

  28. baileythebronco says:

i admit i was wrong larsen is an inside linebacker i was confused, but webster is a strongside linebacker and im right about that, lets face it none of us know whats gonna happen next year but remember this one isnt over boys. and lets remember barrett is a 7th round draft pick i want a lot better starter then barrett but i love him on special teams with a 4.35 40. and woodyard cant play safety he needs to stay on the weakside linebackers spot and move dj to strongside thats the best fit for these guys. and i saw barrett making plays on SPECIAL TEAMS WHICH IS WHERE HE BELONGS NOT STARTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! draft a middle linebacker and i dont think d robertson is staying marcus thomas stands out more to me and d robertson gets paid too much we dont need him

  29. hrdnokd says:

hate to be the one telling you this bailey, but the 3rd play of the game Barrett knocked down the pass, he also stopped a 3rd down run and the kid was only in there for a handful of plays….I’d say that’s making plays quickly. He should be starting at safety right now, Manuel needs to read a manual on how to play safety. Webster is a MLB, he played one season at the strong side position. No way do we move D.J. back to strong side, he’s too much of a force at the weak side position. If Woodyard can’t play strong side then he can’t start. If you don’t want Barrett playing because he was a 7th round pick how can you POSSIBLY justify starting a NON PICK over a 1st rounder?
