Broncos sign Martin, waive Thigpen

August 26th, 2009 - 4:27pm by Chris Gentilviso

At most practices, three Broncos typically wear an orange jersey: the quarterbacks.

At Wednesday’s practice, the backs of the quarterbacks read No. 8, No. 3 and no number.

Newly-signed free-agent quarterback Ingle Martin expects not having a number to change quickly.

“I hope that’s part of the plan,” Martin laughed. “We’ll see. Hopefully the equipment guys will hook me up tomorrow.”

Martin was signed Wednesday, joining the Broncos after being waived by the Chiefs on August 5. Running back Marcus Thigpen was also waived.

A fifth-round pick (148th overall) by the Packers in the 2006 NFL Draft, Martin has appeared in one career NFL game – against the Bears on Dec. 31, 2006. He spent time on Tennessee’s practice squad from 2007-08, before finishing last season in Kansas City.

After playing two seasons at the University of Florida, Martin closed out his collegiate career at Furman University – leaving with school records in passing yards (5,751) and passing touchdowns (42).

Now, he has a chance to work with one of the league’s most exciting yet challenging offensive systems. And he’s up for the challenge.

“When you’re a guy like me, you just want an opportunity,” Martin said. “That’s what I’ve got here. Hopefully I can come in and show them a little bit of what I can do and make myself stick. But it’s going to be a lot of hard work and a short amount of time to do that.”

QUICK HITS:
Signed by the club on Tuesday, offensive lineman Russ Hochstein put in a full session on Wednesday, growing further acquainted with offensive line coach Rick Dennison and his new teammates.

  • For the second straight day, Brian Dawkins sported a blue No. 20 jersey. He still has a wrap on his right hand, but is no longer wearing an orange jersey designated for players recovering from injury.

Here are some more pictures from Wednesday’s practice.- Chris Gentilviso, DenverBroncos.com

DD and 55….I feel all empty inside! Can we not use 007 without HomeTeam or HT007…I feel abused!

Joking of course. All drama aside….I wonder where we are supposed to get a NT from. All I hear is why don’t we go get one! You can’t just pick one up at 7-11….they are hard to find. I firmly believe if the Broncs thought there was someone out there to get, they would. I like Baker and Fields might work out too.

And Vince Wolfork….a UFA next year? Please! He is arguably the best NT in the game….he gets a contract extention this year….just a guess on my part.

    2. brian_schneider says:

Dawkins looks like he’s ready to punch someone’s lights out.

    3. broncs55 says:

      mikew007: lol – didn’t realize we had more than 1 007 – point taken though :)

      brian_schneider

The acquisition of Dawkins really excites me! He has been my favorite player since he came into the league, now that he’s a Bronco – I’m waiting for my Dawkins gear that I am going to get as a belated B-Day present sometime in September!

He always plays with an aggressiveness that has never been scene before – he lays his life out there on the field. Coaches preach this all the way from pee-wee on up, but I’ve never actually have seen it out there except through him! He is an amazing man to watch, also fun – and a phenomenal person and teammate as well! Can you vote for him to Canton early? He would have mine! Heck – Dawkins for president in 2012 what do you say!?

    4. royalbroncofan1 says:

It will be great to see B-Dawk aka Wolverine, out on the field pushing his teammates to take their performance to the next level!!!

    5. HomeTeam007 says:

MikeW- there are not a lot of true NTs out there. and I am not an NFL GM; but in speculation……The NYG have both Fred Robbins and Rocky Bernard, who they picked up in FA, competing for a spot. I believe either one would make a difference.

DD- I am very sorry about your mother. I do remeber that post now. My bad. Its an interesting thing to talk with people on a blog. We don’t know each other, yet we have personal stuff spill over into our discussions. I think a lot gets mis-interpreted when you cannot see someones expressions and gestures to know if they are sincere or sarcastic.

Broncs55- dude. It took me ahwile to get to a pro NFL game also. It is so worth it. Look for opportunities to win tickets in town too. Save your $$$.

Here in Denver, a little character was lost from old Mile High to Invesco; but it is up to each true fan that attends to show their pride by yelling/ stomping/ shaking the house when the defense is on the field and cheering after a good play on offense. I really hope we show up in “true form” for this year’s team and Kyle Orton. I don’t want to be the one to let down Brian Dawkins.

      Orange Crush Again!!!!!!!!

    6. brian_schneider says:

So is Dawkins going to be able to play this Sunday against the Bears? Does anyone know about any Moreno or Marshall, if they’ll get in on some P.T?

    7. mikew007 says:

Brian…looks like Marshall will play but not Moreno.

    8. broncs55 says:

Agreed. I would say Dawkins will play too, but less than others. He is wearing a blue jersey now which indicates he can be hit. If he can be hit in practice, expect him to play. I expect he’ll play 1/4 – 1/2 of the game as the other starters will be playing 3/4+ of the game. Dawkins still needs to nurse that hand of his though!

    9. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

Whats the news on Moreno? Hows he recovering? Can’t wait to see him tear it up down there. But until then GO Hillis run some bears over.

    10. Dynamicdave says:

Sorry, was gone for awhile. Cleaning the house.

HomeTeam007, yeah, you’re absolutely right about saying something on the Internet, might get taken out of context. I recall a few times I typed something with a sarcastic, joking way about it and it got taken out of context. it happens. As for all of us being online friends, not so unusual. I have actually met a few of the online people here. They came down to the Broncos bar where I hang out. Just met LBWilson56 and his wife a little over a month ago. Met dlmyers (he lives in Vegas) and we have watched a few games together and shared a pitcher (or two, or three). I’ve met others and a few others are also talking about coming up to Vegas and hooking up. I’ll bet the Raiders nation doesn’t do that. They would knife each other over a bag of weed or get drunk on the beer and fight each other just because nobody else was available, ha, ha.

D~J~C~#24is#1, Moreno could play if they needed him but they are going to rest him, I would suspect. he didn’t practice so I doubt he will go. I want to see him rip up the defenses when he’s ready. Hillis, Bucky, Walker and yes, even Duckett, will play.

mikew007, sorry, man, didn’t mean to diss the 2nd coming of 007, ha, ha.

    11. HomeTeam007 says:

      DD- thats hilarious!!!!
Stinky, no-good, belligerent, criminal Raider Fans!!!

Not worried about them this year. I am alittle concerned about the Chargers. Thier defense looked good in pre-season. Hopefully they simply don’t know how to prepare for the McDaniels Operation Orange Offense. I certainly don’t know what’s coming next, left handed passes or 3-4 Blitzes. Its gonna be a fun year.

Orange Crush me some Phillip Rivers!!!!!!!!!!

    12. whitebronco#1 says:

Logically or not, people is talking about signing a QB just because we’ve just signed one. The illogical part is the reason we signed this new QB, as we weren’t looking for a season QB, or for Orton replacement. We just signed Ingle Martin so there could be 3 QBs training at the same time to run all the practice as the team has been doing it… so, unless this Martin results to be a surprise (which I doubt, because he’s not already with a team), he will be out again when Simms is back.

Now, on fantasyland… Thigpen is good, but I think KC would never give us a player for the same reason we didn’t ship Cutler even to an AFC team (not comparing Cutler with Thigpen, just the rivalry reason). Tavaris is good too, but not the type of player for this system. If so, we’d have traded Cutler for Campbell, since the beginning, or we’d have signed Leftwich instead of Simms.

And, for those who insist in Brady Quinn, he never was brought on negotiations, just fan talk. So nobody knows how or what would have been a trade for him. He even has difficulties in Cleveland to be a #1 QB, with a simpler offensive system by far.

    13. broncs55 says:

Well, I don’t think their offense has changed much either, and our defense has gotten tremendously better since last!

I don’t think the Chargers will be as tough this year. They also lost to Seattle, by the way this preseason. It appeared we could have beaten Seattle in the first half with our first team.

    14. whitebronco#1 says:

In other things… I found a connection between Dawkins wearing the blue jersey for two days and Cutler suddenly saying nice stuff about McD and the Broncos… hehehe!

      Go Broncooos!!

    15. mikew007 says:

Looks to me like SD will be solid but no better than last year. Why would they be? Merriman hasn’t looked like the Merriman of old and they haven’t really changed or upgraded their roster. They did change D Coordinator….so we’ll see.

Raiders…I can’t see them doing anything. Same with the Chiefs.

It’s a two horse race…..and hey, we are the Broncos!

    17. broncosfolife88 says:

Time for some Sunday night foootball, cant wait. I know its preseason but I want the Bears to get smashed. Yes I am falling into the hating on Cutler but who care.
Cant wait to see Dawkins play he should bring some heat to the game. The offense has looked good but needs to bring some touchdowns this time around. Defense should be strong and take away their run forcing Cutler to throw we should finally see some turnovers get produced because he loves to air it out.
Almost the regular season, cant wait.

      Go Broncos in 09

    18. broncs55 says:

I just want to see if they send Hester up the middle on a short post route. I would love to see Dawkins bring the pain!

      whitebronco#1: lol

Wouldnt you love to see Dawkins hit Cutler as hard as he could? Heck, I thought it was funny when our young TE got decked by him and did a backwards summersault. It looked like he was a little blurry eyed and wobbly after that

    19. broncs55 says:

That would be one heck of a birthday gift! My birthday is Sunday! I’m gonna take my kids to the zoo – then watch the Broncos game later – should be an awesome day!

    20. broncs55 says:

Here, I thought this was pretty funny! It’s a cartoon that has to deal with the Broncos “so called problems” with Marshall, Vick and the Eagles, Farve and Jerry Jones’ scoreboard – its pretty funny!

dont watch it if you are easily offended :)

      This doesn’t look that good!

Oh yeah congrats to Elway! He is getting married this weekend I believe to the Former Raiders cheerleader….to funny that it’s a raider cheerleader

    24. broncs55 says:

hey, if she’s hot, who cares?!?

    25. The_Ink says:

Yeah I actually posted that yesterday! I reposted because they deleted it.

    26. broncs55 says:

A poster from the Denver post put on there:

Obviously no other team is offering a respectable offer for Marshall with his hip and attitide issues so it’s no loss keeping him around as a visual aid. Marshall seriously overplayed his hand – NO WAY Bowlen and McDaniels can allow another player to mope his way out of town after the Cutler incident.

Marshall needs to shut up, play the game and try to impress someone. Bowlen drops $2 million (Marshall’s salary this year) on a weekend in Vegas – he’s not about to let another player make him look like a fool again. It’s worth $2 million to Bowlen and the Broncos to instill some discipline in the clubhouse and make an example of a disgruntled player.

Make him wear a jersey with a big “I” on it and remind the players that “there is still no “I” in team”.

I tend to agree – $2 million for a football team is a drop in the bucket to instill some discipline. Brandon is going to be made an example for the better of the team. He will ride the pine this year if he doesn’t learn to shut up and do what he’s asked. Next year will come around and he will be a free agent, signing with some other team. Branden NEEDS the Broncos more than we need him. We CAN win without him!

He needs the Broncos because he wants more money. If he plays well and healthy all season long, he will get a big contract from someone next year, it will not be the Broncos though. If he doesn’t do as asked, he will ride the pine and get squat next year. The ball is not in his court, its in the Broncos right now!

Heres another funny one I found

    28. The_Ink says:

yeah she is hot still and she is getting up there…..I wonder if John checks this site and checks in on the blog. Well if so…thanks again John for signing my jersey! I bet he has a handle on here and post sometimes under the radar…

    29. The_Ink says:

yeah that is a funny one

    30. Broncosforlife80 says:

      Not saying Orton is a bad QB. But had to correct some on here people been saying orton throws alot less int’s then cutler well thats not true they actually throw the same basically{cutler-1 int per 32.9 throws] [orton-1 int per 33.8 throws}

And in case you were wondering who throws the least…….yup you guessed it Tom Brady haha 1 int per 42.4 throws

    31. TheRoyalBeast says:

yea brandon bailey, saw that a few months back. found it hilarious. tried to post in blog but no luck lol. I truly believe thats how it all went down lol

      Broncos55,
While thats partially true at the same time its not. If the guy doesnt wanna play for u theres nothing u can do to change that. U can force him to ride the pine but that wont stop him from landing a big contract somewhere else. Randy Moss is a huge superbowl winning proof of that. They need to compromise both marshall and the organization. Takes two to tango and as with all compromise, no one is completely happy but they have at least found common ground.

From what I see brandon is in camp doing what he can and tryign to be a part of this team. Some may say he is stupid but he is not that stupid. Knows his performance will be his audition tape and there is no way he will let somethign like money get in the way of another pro bowl season. Marshall will be with us and he will do what he has always done. Dominate. he said it himself. His hip is perfectly fine. It was his hamstring injury hindering his progress. Now that one seems to be done or just about done.

    32. broncs55 says:

      point taken TheRoyalBeast, nice post.

Marshall however, doesn’t know the playbook, and I do not think his hamstring is still an issue.

All I am saying is his value will not be worth much come next year. Yes, he will probably make more money – just not the same amount of money if he doesnt make the probowl. Heck, if he rides the pine this season it will only be because he does not learn the playbook, which will force McD to make him ride the pine.

Not learning the playbook will hinder what he makes next year, it speaks large volumes to the other teams that are likely to take him. He has great talent, but does not play well with others. Great talent, but when times get “tough”, Branden will not put the team first.

And for the record, again, I hope Dawkins crushes either Hester or Cutler on my birthday!

    33. BrandonBailey19 says:

Yea, it makes a whole lot of sense now….lol

    34. DoomervilRocks92 says:

I can’t wait to see Dawkins play! He should be a great addition to the secondary. I think we may have one of the best secondaries in the league.

    35. broncs55 says:

      DoomervilRocks92:

      Agreed.

    36. DoomervilRocks92 says:

We have Champ and Dawkins on one side, and two teamates from the Dolphins who went 11-5 on the other side. I think that Alphonso Smith may see some time this year, though.

    37. cutlersucks8 says:

Although it’s a bit annoying to see J.E marry a raider cheerleader I agree with bronco55 if she’s hot who gives, it’s not like she played for the raiders or anything

    38. TheRoyalBeast says:

Yes our DBs are really good. Not sure about Goodman. he kinda got torched agaisnt seahawks first team. Although like many CBs will say. Its hard to look good next to Champ cuz the other team fears champ so much so they will rarely throw to champs side and where down the CB on the other side. Darrent Williams(RIP) was a great DB but he suffered alot from the “I play on the other side of champ bailey problem” so back then when we play people like peyton manning and the colts, he would keep going to reggie wayne on the curl. its hard to stop a curl route lol

    39. DoomervilRocks92 says:

I personally think Goodman had a bad game vs. the Seahawks.

    40. BrandonBailey19 says:

Curls are hard to stop. I always throw curls in Madden and get a completion all the time. LOL

    41. TheRoyalBeast says:

Apparently Brandon Marshall wasnt on the practice field today. Why? Nobody knows as of yet.

    42. DoomervilRocks92 says:

He needs to be out there so he can actually play. What he’s doing isn’t smart.

    43. cutlersucks8 says:

I got a brother who’s a Philadelphia Eagles fanatic, he thinks the broncos D will suck this year, (probably just brother competition, eagles lost b-dawk Jim Johnson and Stewart bradley I remind him constantly lol ) but when you think about it how? The back 9 could be one of the greatest in football Fields is doing a decent job maning the middle and Mcbean and Peterson will get a lot of coverage sacks. The problem the last few years was that we had no leadership now with b-dawk that’ll all change, even sheldon brown said that the reason the eagles made the playoffs and went on that run was because dawkins willed them to win. As for the Quinn talk the deal was on the table but the browns backed out in the end because they thought that cutler might not want to play in cleveland because of past issues with the oc or something like that. anyway Orton is a great super bowl QB

    44. TheRoyalBeast says:

Who knows….Maybe his talent is so apparent McD made a “coaching decision” and told him to stay in the building and cram that playbook because his skills arent the question. At least im hoping. cuz the other options are bad. Either he reinjured osmething wednesday, finally got his trade request (please no) or the relationship between him and the broncos have taken another turn for the worse

    45. DoomervilRocks92 says:

If he was traded, wouldn’t there be talks of it? I haven’t heard any, so I don’t think that’s the problem. It would be nice if he was learning the playbook.

    46. TheRoyalBeast says:

yea I doubt it too but its a possibility…a very sad possibility. Maybe they have come to terms but just need to iron out the wrinkles before info is released either way….its also a possibility. an unlikely one but one none the less

    47. DoomervilRocks92 says:

Anything is a posibility with Marshal

    48. HomeTeam007 says:

I heard that B.Marsh is actually starting to be disruptive in practice because he doesn’t want to be there. He wants out or more money. What do you do? I say put him in the game this Sunday, give him a couple no brainer plays to run, show case him against thier second string and hopefully get alittle interest from a team that needs WRs. Hopefully the Jets or Ravens. Pull a defensive player and a draft pick and move on. At this point is he really worth having here if he doesn’t even care about his teammates?

Orange Crush all the Crybabies in the Whole World!!!!!!!!

    49. DoomervilRocks92 says:

If he is being disruptive, that would explain why he wasn’t at practice. It would also say that the Broncos are trying to get him out, because they’re annoyed.

    50. Torain ATV fan says:

What ur source hometeam007. If true, i hope we get rid off his @ss. Broncos have put up with all his shooit for years and he thinks the team owes him. f em.
