Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced on Monday that rookie Darcel McBath will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a broken forearm against the Indianapolis Colts.
With McBath headed to IR, McDaniels also announced the team has signed safety Vernon Fox, who spent the 2008 season and 2009 training camp with the Broncos.
McBath was tied for the club lead in special teams tackles entering the Indianapolis game. He snared two interceptions in his rookie campaign.
McDaniels said Fox, who saw time in 10 games for the Broncos last season, will have an opportunity to fill in for McBath “right away” on special teams because of his familiarity with special teams coordinator Mike Priefer’s system during the preseason.
“If Vernon can do that right away, which I have confidence in him – he’s a very bright person and understands that role very well – if he can do that for us, that would help us not have to juggle a bunch of balls in the air and move everybody around to try to get that accommodated,” McDaniels said. “We’ll see how fast we can get that done, but that’s part of Vernon’s versatility that we’ll look forward to.”
Fox, who totaled 20 tackles and one fumble recovery for a touchdown in 2008, said he believes he can contribute to the team down the stretch. Since being waived by the club on Sept. 5, Fox said has been staying in football shape just in case a situation like this one arose.
“Even when leaving here I was hoping that at some point I could have an opportunity to come back here,” Fox said. “It was looking like along the way that I would end up somewhere else, but for one reason or another that didn’t happen and obviously it was meant for me to spend at least the rest of the season here. I look forward to trying to do whatever I can to help the team push forward.”

oldsouthstander, thanks for refreshing my memory, I do remember it was a night game and I thought it was Oakland, the team right near San Francisco, well I was close. lol. Here is how it went:
Denver 17, San Francisco 16
Nov. 11, 1985
Rich Karlis’ 24-yarder won it for Denver over the world champions in a game that will be remembered for the snowball that came out of the stands and may have affected Ray Wersching’s 27-yard chip shot at the end of the first half. The snowball landed near holder Matt Cavanaugh, who bobbled the snap and threw an incomplete pass.
brian, you are right about one thing, it is super important to go into the post season with momentum, and if, by example, we were to lose to the lowly Raiders at home, we obviously wouldn’t be a team belonging in the playoffs. Yeah the Raiders beat Philly but that was at the Raiders and Philly hardly ever wins on the West coast and they beat Pittsburg but Pittsburgh is nearly mathematically out of the playoffs and they did it with Gradowski, who should be done and out now. As a fan, I am not at all concerned about this game, not to say that obviously hopefully the players don’t view it as I do, we don’t need to lose another trap game, but as far as I see it we should demolish them, we are mad, we just lost a close one to the best team in the AFC at their house and Oakland just lost 34-10 to the Redskins I believe. So, I am not worried at all, because if we can’t win this one we obviously don’t belong in post season, just my take.
And they beat Cinci you say, correct, but same thing with the Gradowski won’t be playing thing and Cinci has lost key games of late, they are not the kind of team they were earlier, see the stomping they got against the Vikings. Anyway, in this league, as we all know anyone can beat anybody on any given Sunday, so we are probably over evaluating past games as far as important factors to the game at hand, IMO it’s much more a thing of how teams match up against eachother, and we match up great against Jamarcus, if he is the starter, the third guy might get the nod, because our secondary has Jamarcus number, and if we do get the third guy, I am sure our secondary will welcome him to the NFL in proper fashion. LOL. Not worried at all over here.
Just checked about the Raiders, they don’t know whether Gradowski will be out or not yet, but come on he has a torn ligament and also a partially torn other one, the guy is most likely done for the season. They also say that Cable is not automatically giving the job to Jamarcus if Gradowski is out, he will evaluate who will give them the best chance to win against us, Charlie Frye or Jamarcus and announce it tomorrow, I bet is is thinking like I do, we own Jamarcus with our secondary, it would be a real tough game to put him back in. They also might have lost their TE Zach Miller for the game, Safety Michael Huff has got problems and Heyward-Bey is not recovering well from his injury. Pretty important injuries if you ask me.
Russell pretty much said it “The WR seem to make better plays for Gradowski.” So to me that means if he plays Sunday then the WR will drop balls and he’ll throw INTs and over throw his WRs. I don’t like bringing up the past but last season still gives me horrible nightmares.
Go Broncos!!!!
Doom lets get some more sacks and break the record baby!!!!
I bet he is thinking….
brian, lol, horrible nightmares over last year game against Oakland, well if that makes you feel any better, I am having my horrible nightmares this season, with the SD loss at home.
I believe Doom will get the Bronco record, but it would take a miracle to get the NFL one, specially now that he had none against the Colts.
Maybe, but if they do go with Frye, maybe Doom could get a lot of them to make up for the goose ege against Manning.
*egg* LOL!! what the heck is an ege?
I would say something but you guys have pretty much summed it up for this week.
GO BRONCOS!!
Prediction
Broncos:35
Raiders: 14
I certainly hope the boys come out playing as pi$$ed off as JMac seemed in that press conference!
It’s not about beating Oakland because it’s a win! We need a WIN because we need to gather one more stinit of momentum into the playoffs!
Plain and simple! I believe this team can play with the best teams in the AFC! Momentum is key and work out the crinkles……aka SHORT YARDAGE
LOL!
GO GET EM’ BOYS! KEEP THOSE HEADS UP! YOU ARE A VERY, VERY DANGEROUS TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS! I BELIEVE YOU CAN DO IT ALL THE WAY TO MIAMI IF YOU PLAY 60 MINUTES!! 60 MINUTES OF BRONCO 09′ FOOTBALL WILL BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE NFL! PERIOD!
Noooooooo, I was a big McBath fan. Liked the Idea we drafted him, fast and good cover guy. Barely got playing time but made the most of it……he has the ability to be the future safety of the broncos. but i have faith in vernon fox…veteran smarts right there lol
Just wanna say way to go broncos….missed the first half so i dunno how we got into such a hole but chances are good that if we make playoffs and play well, we will see the colts again….and if u play a team twice chances are u will lose one…..rather lose the one that counts less. And of course way to go Brandon Marshall, don’t even gotta say no more cuz yall know i can go on and on about the man….
lets pay the man already, if he works this hard for chump change we can only hope he works harder for more money lol. Hopefully he stays with us… and thx to this performance he is on route for his 3rd 100plus catch season, which many thought he wouldnt get with Orton and since he was benched early in the season. Wes welker just became the 4th person in NFL history to post 3 consecutive 100catch seasons and marshall will be the fifth….anyway, im out
THE SEASON IS OURS FOR THE TAKING
GO BRONCOS!!!
I don’t have any doubts about getting some of our guys inked especially Marshall. If McD really didn’t want him here he’d of sent him packing with Cutler.
Go Broncos!!!!
Yea you are right…lets hope he feels the sam way…I at least think he does. Now that im done congratulating marshal, on to the Broncos as a team.
This team gives me a headache sometimes….we give up possible winning oppourtunities sometimes because of the coaching call or because we take to long to get into the game, or fall out of the game before the game is over. Like i said, didnt see the first half so dunno how we got into that predicament…..al I know is this team needs to be more consistant and play evrygame like a playoff game….because the colts game had playoff implications and if thats how you perform in a playoff atmosphere (both coach and player) then you might as well pack it up…..I do believe we have it in us…and our secondary isnt getting any younger…need to cash in now for the Organization and because most of them are the best at their positions and have never seen a ring (or a superbowl for that matter).
I quoted 10-6 like many before the season and it seems like we might be able to pull of a 11-5 which is good but we have left alot of winnable games unwon….to think, with our hot start, we coulda been 2nd seat first round bye, now we have to fight for birth and in the wildcard games.
Concerns:
1. Not spreading the ball around. Hillis, Stokley and Royal are rotting on the sidelines.
2. Jay Cutler the lesser. Orton has thrown two INT’s in the red zone in the past two weeks. This type of play is inexcusable.
3. Play calling. Obviously KM up the middle didn’t work, but how many times did we call that? Terrible play calling.
Hopefully we can fix these things. We can maybe go 3-0. But we aren’t going deep in the play offs with these problems.
God forbid but what if we play the jets in the play offs? Revis would shut down Bmarsh and we would be one dimensional.
Just saying.
florio, always said you were a smart young man, all valid points you make, can’t say I really disagree with any of them.
TRB, I quoted 8-8, so I’m about to eat crow, I hope… LOL.
Thanks, bay.
why should we be worrying about the Gradkowski? We cant let his short success change our goals. The Broncos wont sleep on him thats for sure if he is playing..
but our defense just made the most prolific passer (Peyton) look uncomfortable in the most of the second half of the COlts game…. our defensive adjusments have been some of the best I’ve seen this season..would be great if the defense dominated throuh out..but when you think you’ve got the perfect defense, it all shatters when they get full of it…one weakness exploited and the domino effect falls in place….just ask the Steelers, the Bears, the Giants, for example…defensive adjusments and such they’re questioning their defenses,,doing the blame game
i had a lot of respect for the late Jim Johnson he made some of the best defensive adjustments in and prior to games…dawkins was a product of that system…
this is all my opinion so dont shoot me down…lol…
alright fans! shout your hearts out in this game..Broncos, show em’ how we run in the Mile High City..
WOW baylin and FTR,
you guys are on the different level with the break downs..lol
Broncos20, call me crazy, I’m still trying to find a way to win the division, I’m so sick and tired of SD taking it for the last 4/5 years. LOL.
We keep living in the past with the Raider rivalry thing, but the truth of the matter is maybe we should move some of that hatred towards SD and maybe it will give us the edge to dethrone them. As you probably know, I am still livid over the game we lost against SD at home, my personal nightmare, the non must win game, as most everyone called it, whatever…
It was in essence a three game swing, rrrraghhhh.
@ Baylno!
You’re not alone buddy! I’ve been thinking it the whole time. Look the only way it happens is if we win out and they lose all of them! They have a 2 game lead and the tie breaker!
Soo…they have to lose to the Bengals, Tennessee and Washington and we have to win out!
I say they own the tie breaker because I believe we’ve won/lost against common opponents so it’ll come down to points score I think…..
thoughts….?
….obviously I would love the AFC West seed, but if it doesn’t happen…do it on the road!
GO GET EM’ BOYS!
I can see why people are getting nervous about the Oakland game, looking at the parallels between this season and last, but I don’t think the possibility has any merit. For one, this is a different team than last year, with a different coach who won’t overlook Oakland. Secondly, it is in Denver, whereas last year it was in Oakland. Finally, the Raiders were playing better at this point last year (not a very difficult feat, I think my Montana Grizzlies are also playing at a higher lever than Oakland is). This has some of the looks of a trap game, but I was much more worried @KC.
Broncfalls, we were talking about the tie breaker thing last night, and the common opponent thing, which is what it would come down to if they lose two and we win out. In my calculations, if we win out and they lose against Washington AND Cinci, we win the tie breaker even if they beat Tennessee. If we win out but they beat either Washington OR Cinci and lose the Tennessee game it goes to the 4th tie breaker, best conference record and it looks to me we would win that because with either a loss against Cinci or Tennessee it would give them one more loss than us in the AFC. So if they lose two, our chances are better than most think. But they need to lose two out of three and they haven’t lost in December since 2005 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And we have to win out first and foremost.
Its a good thing that yall signed fox and all but what are yall giong to do next time yall play. yall need to get back on the path that yall started on. Yall are a good team and I won’t trade yall for nothing in the world just get yall game right
denver28 oakland 7 go broncos
yall crazy! LOL.
Im pretty sure the tie breakers go. DIV, CONFERENCE, NON-CONFERENCE, then everything else…and right now we are 2 games behind them in the conference and 1 game behidn them in the non conference so we have to win out and they have to lose it all….if im not mistaking that is
TRB, wrong, it’s 1) head to head 2) division record 3) common opponent record, 4) conference record. You don’t think I would be doing all this playoff scenario work without checking out the NFL tie breaker procedures first, do you? LOL.
non conference is not even a tie breaker, and they are 12 of them as far as deciding a division champion. TBR, I know you had access trouble with your computer, but your lack of knowledge on the matter shocks me! LOL. But you do make up for it on being right all along about Marshall. LOL.
OK, once again, this was all done on this blog last night:
Divisional tiebreakers
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games (games played against the same opponents).
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory (the combined won-lost-tied percentage of all the teams that a club has defeated).
6. Strength of schedule (the combined won-lost-tied percentage of all the teams that a club has played against).
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss
TRB, sorry I called you TBR in the 3:21 pm post. LOL.
Thanks Baylin!
Hey, I’m all of you watched the monday morning press conference with JMac as I did.
Did you see how irritated JMac was getting when Peyton Hillis’s name got brought up? LOL!
Then right when I thought the topic would die, one reporter says;
“Josh, are you hearing all the rumblings about Peyton like we are? That why are we seeing him in short yardage situations?”
I thought I was gonna die! LOL! Actually I thought JMac was going to choke the reporter!
One more question for you guys…
I get the fact that JMac is hell bound and determined to make those short yardage plays. Furthermore, I also believe he doesn’t think it is Moreno. He flat out put the Oline on the road and started up the bus sort to speak!
Can someone tell me why there wouldn’t be more of a spread offense in these short yardage plays? I mean if we’re going to line up tight and hope the offensive line get’s penetration and don’t…..spread it out, and I mean spread it.
I guess I see Moreno running well on 1st and 2nd downs mainly That’s because in part to a spread offense. There’s more to defend during that formation. Why not during short yardage? I’m not trying to play coach, I just wonder what it would look like if there was more of a look that’s all
GO GET EM’ BOYS!
I, for one, am for anything but the dive play down the middle with Moreno, heck, I’d rather see my wife run that spread play you’re talking about, Broncfalls. LOL.
Lets beat Oakland first and worry about tie breakers later. We only have a 1 game lead in the wild card. This is as close to a must win as it gets cuz it’s a division / conference game. I would take a win this week over next week(Philly NFC). It’s hard to predict this one cuz of the injuries to both teams, but 27-13 BRONCOS!!!
Why not pitch it out ? Up the middle has not worked all year. Remember agaist Oakland we were turned down at the 1 yrd line on 3 tries. All year long it has not worked agaist great, good and bad teams.
true that baylin,,respects to you…
To the point… I hope McB can recover fast and be ready for the next season. And welcome back to Fox. I hope he can show something to make it hard for the coaches to waive him again.
Go Broncooos!
why do we always go between the tackles what about stretching the field and going around end
Josh, as much as i admire him and figured on a 10-6 season from the very begining. Is making the same stupid play calls that got mike fired!!
3rd&1 and he runs it up the middle??? the ravens & the steelers, same stupid calls. We could of actually won against the colts. and what took so long to get the ball to marshall? now were in the same piosition as last previous years, hoping the chargers lose
