Broncos Set Camp Attendance Record

August 4th, 2012 - 6:49pm by Stuart Zaas

From the crowd’s eruption after Peyton Manning’s back-shoulder touchdown pass to Eric Decker, someone walking by Sports Authority Field at Mile High might have thought it was a game-winning score.

Instead, it was a series-ending play in the team’s Summer Scrimmage, which 41,304 fans packed Sports Authority Field to take in.

“It got loud out on the field when guys would make big plays,” Defensive Tackle Mitch Unrein said. “I had a great time, and I think the fans really enjoyed it too. This is like two or three times the size of games up in Laramie.”

That attendance figure nearly doubled the club’s previous record for a practice that was set in 2010 when 20,782 fans attended the stadium practice.

In fact, Saturday’s scrimmage turnout almost topped the team’s total attendance record for an entire camp.

Through the eight sessions that have been open to the public in the team’s 2012 training camp, 69,821 fans have watched the Broncos practice. That already surpasses the team’s total attendance record for a training camp that was set last year when 45,124 fans watched practices.

“It’s unbelievable,” Head Coach John Fox said. “I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this for this type of scrimmage atmosphere. I think they’re ready for some football.”
