Broncos Release One, Waive Two

August 25th, 2008 - 2:00pm by Gray Caldwell

The Denver Broncos on Monday released wide receiver Samie Parker and waived defensive tackle Josh Mallard along with wide receiver Lorne Sam, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Parker, a fifth-year player, joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent on April 15 after spending his first four seasons with Kansas City. He has 110 receptions and more than 1,500 yards in four seasons in the league.

Mallard, who is in his fifth NFL season, played eight games with the Broncos last year after joining the team as a free agent on Nov. 6. During that span, he showed an ability to get to the ball, notching 3.5 sacks and 20 tackles. In his career he has 8.5 sacks along with five forced fumbles.

Sam, a rookie, entered the NFL with Denver on April 28 as a college free agent from the University of Texas-El Paso. He transferred to UTEP from Florida State University for his final two years of college. A versatile collegiate player, Sam was exclusively used as a wide receiver at FSU, but at UTEP he played both quarterback and running back.

The Broncos must trim the roster down to 75 players by 2:00 P.M. MDT tomorrow.

This site is amazing for salary cap and contract length questions. I believe this link takes you right to the Broncos’ spreadsheet, which I think you have to save, rather than open. The last update to the list was in march, so none of the rookies are on there, and few, if any of the FA’s. But for guys who’ve been around for a while, it’s pretty complete.

I just hope Denver does not cut Glenn Martinez or Clifford Russel or anthony aldridge or wesly woodyard.

I’m shocked that SAM didn’t get a longer look.I’ve been hearing the buzz on this kid ever since he entered college with FSU !!!! All I can say is Trust the coach !!!I’m more worried about our secondary more than anything That last outing against the packers, has gotten me real nervous. The D as a Whole,Must find their tackling skills or it will be one long season !!!

  10. "junkyard" says:

I think WOODYARD is good 2 stay !!! He’s a pretty active linebacker with a nose for the ball.So far he’s racked up some phat solo tackle stats this pre season, with 1 more to go.Shanny will give guys a superlong look next pre season game. !!!

  11. dave888259 says:

In my opinion, Woodyard makes the active roster. He may not see much playing time this year, other than special teams, but I don’t think the team wants to risk trying to get him past waivers to put him on the practice squad. I know he’s a bit small for it, but is there any chance of him playing the SAM position? Because I really want to get him on the field as much as possible, but not in place of DJ. In place of Boss sounds pretty good to me. Nothing against Boss, but it looks like Woodyard has a chance to be great.

  12. West Coast says:

Is it just me or does Bly not know how to tackle? Seriously his tackling skills suck

  13. broncoryan says:

im with West Coast on that about Bly as well.

I watched Woodyard play in the music city bowl. I wanted the Broncos to draft him to replace Gold. Instead he went undrafted, but still ended up where i wanted him :) If he doesn’t make the roster i will be annoyed, he has a knack of getting to the ball carrier and will be awesome on special teams due to his speed.

I wanted to see mallard make the roster to be honest, he might not be flashy, and have ideal size for a DT, but he did get to the QB. He would have been good for 3rd downs, but i think Robertson, Thomas & Peterson are more safe options. Oh, and McKinley, but i don’t see him making the cut to be honest.

Like i said, as long as Woodyard is on the roster, all the other undrafted dudes look like their time in Denver is done. Except maybe Aldrige and Kern, they might make the practice squad.

1 more then the funk really starts!

    Go Broncos!

Would have like to keep Sam on the practice squad, nice size! Parker didn’t show much to me to make the team. I would be quite suprised if Woodyard didn’t make the team. He’s played great all preseason, yes he’s small but he could be a great special teamer for us. Also would like to see him get in on certain packages.

  16. Bones1965 says:

Start Mallard over englebermesiter who stinks. At least Mallard gets to the QB. Did anyone notice that they but Mallard at Defensive Tackle.
The guy Weighs 260 pounds what a joke.

  17. go cutler says:

scott212 jay signed a 6 year deal i think i dont know or care what he gets paid i think he will do very well.go broncos

  18. delux304 says:

Just got to see the game! Why cant BLY tackle anyone? Crossing routes killed us on that game.

  19. West Coast says:

Maybe he should grow some balls!

  20. BroncoBoy1993 says:

i think this year we are gona do really well against the run, but the passing game is gona kill our secondary.

  21. denver270 says:

i think its going to be a sad year!! we need more weapons!!! are d looks the same as it did last year!!

  22. oldsouthstander says:

Do they ever publish the depth chart on the assorted special teams for the Broncos? It would be interesting to see who all is doing what.

  23. broncoryan says:

Starting Webster at the middle is a BAD IDEA

  24. greekbronco9 says:

    I completely agree with broncoryan

  25. lynch4prez says:

i agree with Bly not being a very good tackler, but you cant forget the guy is only 5’9 190 soaking wet, and he does a pretty good job (at least in the past) of popping the ball outta the receivers hands.
also i was praying that Webster got the starting job.. he’s got the experience, a decent skill set.. i dunno about you guys but that makes me feel a lot better than a guy whos never started a game and just excelled on special teams
