Broncos Knock Off Steelers, 31-19

September 9th, 2012 - 9:50pm by Tyler Everett

After trailing 19-14 one minute into the fourth quarter, the Broncos stormed back with 17 unanswered points to open the season with a 31-19 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Facing a five-point deficit after a Pittsburgh touchdown, Manning marched the Broncos 80 yards down the field, then added a two-point conversion to take a 22-19 lead.

Denver’s D forced a three-and-out on the next Pittsburgh possession, and the Broncos then moved down the field to set up a 26-yard field goal by Matt Prater that made it 25-19.

The Broncos defense delivered the knockout punch on the following series when cornerback Tracy Porter jumped a route on the sideline and sped 43 yards into the end zone for a 31-19 lead that the Steelers were never able to threaten.

Neither team was able to produce much offense in the opening quarter, but both Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers and Peyton Manning of the Broncos came alive in a back-and-forth battle that the Steelers led 10-7 at halftime and the Broncos led 14-13 going into the fourth quarter.

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!

  2. singer says:

Just watched the nfl network highlites and they also said it was a bad call on moore. which was odd to say the least.

  3. tnalen66 says:

its dumb if you fumble east & west the O gets the ball but north & south the D gets the ball.

  4. alaskanbronco06 says:

Actually if you watch the play the Sanders was going down and Moore came in leading with his helmet. What makes it a bad call is that it wasnt intentional.

  5. BuddhaBroncos says:

And tnalen wins the cookie. Yep it was a champ bailey interception in the end zone which he ran all the way to the opposite 1 yard line before being takled by a patriot TE and after review the ball went out at the one yard line.

Falcons looked good today. That’s going to be a tough game as well. I think we match up pretty well against them though. We have Champ and Porter to cover Jones and White, but Gonzalez always creates a matchup problem. Either that, or the Chiefs just aren’t as good as all the talking heads keep saying they are.

  7. singer says:

i disagree ab. it looks like the reciever initiated the contact. also same thing happened when harris got dinged

  8. 3rdGeneration says:

All off season the heads have been writing us off on NFLN and ESPN. Everyone is high on the Chiefs and Chargers in the West. I didn’t know if I was blinded by orange and blue, but I was like, “how are they not seeing what we’ve done to improve our team?” I hope tonight is indicative of our future. It’s only one game, but we looked pretty damn solid.

  10. Lenny says:

Soooo excited for the season-awesome game tonight looking forward to many more wins!

  11. alaskanbronco06 says:

Well another Bronco defender (Harris I believe) has Sanders legs wrapped ad had him headed to the ground when Moore came in leading with his helmet. Its a easy call actually. He lead with his helmet and hit Sanders on the helmet. Really simple of a call. Helmet to helmets are illegal.

  12. Bronco_Turtle says:

AB… Moore didn’t lead with the helmet… Sanders ducked his head, and their helmets collided, Moore clearly was leading with the inside shoulder

  13. Bronco_Turtle says:

I think he exaggerated the collision to try to draw the flag and it was an easy sell with Rookie Refs…

  14. alaskanbronco06 says:

No BT he was clearly leading with his helmet. And Sanders didnt duck his head. He was going to the ground do to another defender having his legs wrapped up.

  15. Bronco_Turtle says:

Either way, if Moore makes a pick on first down that play never happens!

  16. singer says:

I’ve watched it 10 times and thats what i see Turtle, but it’s no biggie. I do wish a few of the holds woulda been called on the steelers oline though. was really bad

  17. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT I think he did fake being rocked by it. But nonetheless it was a helmet to helmet. And even if Sanders ducked his head to cause it (Which he didnt) then it still goes against the defender. Thats what sucks about the call. 99% of the time its against the defender even if its not their fault.

  18. DaddyBronc says:

I disagree as well AB – One angle replay all you can see is the receiver going down. The other angle from behind Moore you see that Moores Knees were on the ground first and Moore is all but stopped when the receiver lunges in for that hit. I think it was intentional seeking of the penalty by Saunders. I think Saunders might get lucky if he isn’t fined.

  19. Bronco_Turtle says:

He ducked.. pretty clearly, and Moore was not leading with the helmet… the helmets did meet, which is a penalty but it was not on Moore in any way

  20. DaddyBronc says:

    Sanders? whatever…

  21. alaskanbronco06 says:

I have watched that play multiple times as well. And all three of you are very wrong. It was Harris who had Sanders legs wrapped up. Before Sanders started going down Moore lowered his helmet meaning to hit Sanders gut. While Moore was looking down is when Sanders started to fall due to Harris having his legs wrapped. As he was falling helmets collided.

And DB it doesnt matter if Moore knees where on the ground or not. He lead with his helmet and was a helmet to helmet hit. Simple easy call. And was a penalty against Denver.

I dont think either will be fined as it wasnt intentional.

  22. Bronco_Turtle says:

Who wins tomorrow nights game Raiders or Chargers? and how can you cheer for anything short of a tie?

  23. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT you are mistaken. Moore lowered his helmet. He didnt turn to have his shoulder hit first which is leading with the helmet. And Moore was the one to lower the helmet. Not Sanders as Sanders was being taken down.

  24. Bronco_Turtle says:

:) AB, you crack me up!!!

  25. DaddyBronc says:

It has been a good day. ARI beating the Seachickens was a happy surprise.

Warren with a sprained elbow. We’ll see, but I doubt that keeps him out.

  26. Bronco_Turtle says:

The only thing mistaken is your contact prescription or the size of your TV buddy! we all saw the same thing, how did you manage to miss it?

  27. Bronco_Turtle says:

I thought it was a great day of Football DB! many entertaining games and some unexpected blow outs! I think the Dolphins looked like about the only door mat…

  28. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT I know you think your never wrong but about this you are. As even Mike Pierria even said how simple of a call it was. On ESPN he gets on and answers questions about penalties and that was one. He points out that Moore clearly lead with his helmet and Sanders was going down. So go ahead and argue. But I know what I saw and it just happens to be what the former head of officiating saw as well.

  29. raidrhadr says:

alaskan…I also think Moore had the angle to clearly see that the ball hit the turf and that he had time to pull up. Just sayin’

  30. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT I watch it on a 52 inch TV. And watched it multiple times. All three of you are very mistaken by it so you must be the ones missing it.

Oh and on NFL network none of them even spoke about that play. As it wasnt a game changing penalty.

  31. DaddyBronc says:

I didn’t watch any of HOU/ MIA game but I always like to cheer Kubiak’s success. I’m in favor of ‘Phins being team #32. LOL

  32. Bronco_Turtle says:

No worries AB… he has to error on the side of caution, and the call was easy, when helmets collide it is for sure a penalty… Moore did not lead with his helmet though and the reason the helmets collided was sanders putting his head down… I’m not debating whether it was an easy call, as it clearly was… but as usual your interpretation is off base

  33. alaskanbronco06 says:

Raidr he had his head lowered to where it looked like he couldnt see. Now I dont know if he actually did or not. But if he could see what was happening and couldve pulled up that actually makes it worse and helps what im saying. And if he could see to pull up and didnt then he could get fined.

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

    :o ) Barkely in Miami… has a ring!

  35. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT Actually it isnt. As you seem to be failing to understand that Sanders was being taken to the ground. He didnt lower his head. HE WAS BEING TACKLED and Moore DID lead with his helmet. As that is obvious by the fact he didnt turn to either side to lead with his shoulder (Which is still an illegal hit by the way)

  36. alaskanbronco06 says:

Also with Pierria he is brutally honest and will call out bad calls. Has done it multiple times. He did the same with the timeout issue with AZ SEA game. However with this one he was just as honest saying it was an easy call as Moore lead with his helmet hitting Sanders in the helmet.

  37. Bronco_Turtle says:

    that’s just not what I saw.. i’m glad that’s what you think AB… :)

  38. DaddyBronc says:

I watched the BOB game. Bob had little to advertise he is a rookie. That was exciting.

Luck didn’t look bad – but they did take advantage of him some. Looked a lot like Elway in the early years.

I think we are headed into some great football years where the margin between great teams and mediocre team shrinks.

  39. Bronco_Turtle says:

and many people saw what I did, I’m sure just as many saw what you did… it’s on film so I think we talked about it about enough… agreed?

  40. Bronco_Turtle says:

Did you guys see the Commercial with Elway talking about Dancing! Classic!!! it made me smile

  41. alaskanbronco06 says:

Well what I think is actually correct as it is backed up by former head of officiating. And what you saw was clearly not the whole picture. As you seem to still keep missing Sanders was being taken down because Harris had his legs wrapped up. Which would cause the helmet to fall due to him falling. So in a way you are right….his helmet was lowered….Just by the tackle and not himself.

  42. DaddyBronc says:

Watched the PHI game. Vick did little to impress.

Was not surprised at the Niner victory. – either the Pack responds or heads for the basement. Rodgers played second fiddle in this game and Smith looked like the league MVP.

  43. Bronco_Turtle says:

As usual, you are correct in your own mind, and for that you get a Cyber Cookie… like I said, it’s on film so people can easily make their own judgement

  44. alaskanbronco06 says:

Man I really wanted to see the Titans beat the Pats (Figured they wouldnt) But I just wanted everyone to get off the Patriots. Every year they are dubbed best team. Rather annoying. Plus I hate them.

Watching RG3 was a lot of fun.

BT I saw that commercial as well. Really cracked me up. I also like Mannings Papa Johns commercial about giving away 2 mil free pizzas.

  45. Bronco_Turtle says:

The Niners looked solid again, and hate to say it but Perrish Cox is a kind of a Baller!

  46. alaskanbronco06 says:

Actually in the real world I am correct as well. As people who know the rules better than you or I and know what to look for have said the same as I have been saying.

  47. Bronco_Turtle says:

Hightower looked solid today… is it possible that the Defense will be the strongest unit on that team? Chris Johnson had 4 yards today… that’s not alot really

  48. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT dot bring up that game LOL. Everything I read and saw said bench that Niners D as they will be torched for 40+ points. Didnt want to but having Denvers D well I just had to play favorites. LOL

  49. DaddyBronc says:

THe Elway commercial about dancing with his kids or for his kids highlighted the humanity of the man. FIrst glimpse I’ve had of Elway as a father = That rocks.

Glad you brought it up. That’s cool like Miller …tebowing!!!

  50. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT CJ2K was horrendous. He keeps trying to make that extra cut/s and causes him to do worse. He had many holes for a good gain but made that extra cut. He screwed over a couple of my Fantasy teams. Lol

Hightower and Jones both looked rather good. Both combined their play to get NE a TD
