Broncos Finish Strong in Fan Voting

December 22nd, 2009 - 3:59pm by Zach Eisendrath

Fan voting for the 2010 Pro Bowl came to a close on Monday night, and four Broncos ranked in the top five at their respective positions on the final fan ballot.

Leading the way was Champ Bailey, who finished tops amongst AFC cornerbacks with 443,018 votes. The next highest cornerback, Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha, had 287,135 votes to his name.

Meanwhile, Bailey’s secondary counterpart, Brian Dawkins (215,199 votes), finished second among AFC strong safeties, only trailing Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu in that category. Rounding things out for the defense was Elvis Dumervil, who ranked in second behind Pittsburgh’s James Harrison at outside linebacker with 273,543 fan votes.

As for special teams, Eddie Royal (117,313 votes) ranked in third amongst kick returners, only behind Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs and San Diego’s Darren Sproles.

Remember, this is not the Pro Bowl roster, it is just the final tally now that fan voting is complete. The AFC and NFC Pro Bowl squads are based on the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters that represent the two conferences in the Pro Bowl.

NFL players and coaches will cast their votes today and tomorrow, and the teams will be announced at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday, Dec. 29 on a special NFL Total Access 2010 Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network.

    off step up please

  3. theotheredge says:

Sick of not seeing Peyton Hillis in there….come on…Lamont Jordan? Really? What is McD’s problem with Hillis? 3 and a long 1 and we QB sneak? Come on…

  4. Broncos~4~Life says:

    Dear Santa McD,

umm. well all i want for christmas would be number 22
on the field umm yup that would be the best thing ever!!!
Please!!!! ive been pretty good all year:)

    Love, The most patient Fan!!

  5. bronkrod730 says:

McDaniels won’t put Hillis in until someone is injured and he has to. His ego won’t let him. Go Broncos!

  6. boltraiderhater says:

At this point, I really don’t care if Hillis gets some carries. I just want someone on the offense to take it upon themselves to make a short yardage play. I know without Hillis it takes away from our talent pool, but we still have great talent. They need to study hard, practice harder, and leave it all on the field every play, including coaches.

At the start of the regular season, most of us would have been happy with a 9-7 or even a 8-8 record. But not me, not now that I have seen our potential up to the bye week. We forget the offseason and preseason because we have shown that we are capable of winning our division.

philly can be beat, and maybe the great leaders we have in the locker room will remind the rest of the boys what we are capable of.

I know that a superbowl or an AFC championship is not a realistic goal this season, but an improvement from last year is. If we don’t make the playoffs it will be a let down to me as a fan.

I do still have hope for the playoffs. And I would like a win in a rematch against san diego.

    Come on boys.

    GO BRONCOS !!!

  7. casinoroyal19 says:

you guys need to calm down about this Hillis thing. anyone remember early in the season when he got the carries and he fumbled!!! he just got put in McD’s dog house because of that. the last thing you want on a short yard play is a turnover!!

  8. hotsizzle says:

This season is like every other season a late meltdown from a team that has overachieved. I love how we changed the entire organization and the result is the same. Merry Christmas Mr. B.

  9. broncos14441 says:

peyton hillis fumbles opening kick return in second game of the season versus cleveland. the end of peyton hillis

  10. bronkrod730 says:

Yes Hillis fumbled a time or two, but who hasn’t? That would be like taking Orton out after he throws his first, second or third INT. It’s time to give the kid a break and let him have another shot at running the ball. He is a beast in the short yardage carries and that is where the Broncos need some help!
    Go Broncos!

  11. FTR says:

    McD:
Stop the coach talk and man up!! Everyone including us fans know what we need! And that’s Hillis. Your ignorance concerning Payton Hillis is pissing us fans off!!! Please look at his film from last year!! Doo!! We are not experts but you sir are not playing your best players. If you were Hillis would be playing!! Blah Blah you are wrong in what ever reasons for not playing him!!! DO SOMETHING> ANYTHING but include Hillis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ohh and after you do make this change send some Kudos to us fans!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!
    FTR

  12. jonah22 says:

casinoroyal, why isn’t Moreno in the doghouse? I’m pretty sure that fumble against San Diego caused the entire teams momentum to tank. I was at that game. Orton game out and the crowd went wild. He drove us down the field. We hand the ball of to Knowshon fumblereno and he fumbles. Things were never the same that game and we got owned. I’d personally rather have Hillis as our starting running back. He has heart.

  13. broncos20 says:

    that was a heartbreak…moving on

i agree Hillis needs to play, he brings a different dynamic to the game…BUT,,this a thing that the whole team needs to put their hearts into….i’m proud we’ve made this far considering the crazy previous season and the huge overhaul in defense…Go Broncos! Merry Christmas to the players and please take down the eagles…

  14. patientbronco says:

Its great that you all want Hillis to play, but here’s the thing. Its not our choice. I personally dont think that Hillis would have made a bit of difference on all those third and short plays that we keep running right up the gut. The problem is that every defense knows what we will run on those situations and not even Walter Payton would have been successfull when the defense keeps getting penetration like every def has on us on third and short. We need some different play calling a whole lot more than bringing Hillis off the bench.

  15. TheRoyalBeast says:

Hillis fumbled once as a RB (and later made up for with a TD) and another time as a KR (dunno why he was there in the first place). Moreno has fumbled more, Bucky has fumbled more. Not bashing them, just stating facts…..1 mistake doesn’t warrant DOGHOUSE.

McD is just stubborn…Bucky went down against colts…Moreno wasnt too effective…but yet Hillis got no touches…and Moreno was forced to become an every down back….Redamdiculous.

Anyway, This past week, I voted my heart out for THE BEAST, Clady, DJ Williams, and Prater….5 deserving that didn’t make final cut…I did my best fo rem…the rest is up to coaches and other NFL players.

  16. TheRoyalBeast says:

    We hear ya patient broncos….

Our first choice would be, new more creative plays for 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 BUT if he MUST run it (because he is stubborn like that) put in Peyton…who is a tough runner, strong, and the smash we need. But yes, different play call will be the ideal choice…Besides all our runs look EXACTLY the same…The most annoying thing is when he calls it on 4th and 1 or 3rd and 1 and it doesnt work…camera switches to the play on the side lines and he seems so dissaopinted cuz he swore it would work….IT HASNT WORKED ALL YEAR, NOT TO TALK ABOUT A GAME LIKE COLTS WHERE WE WERE COSNTANTLY GETTING STUFFED!!!

  17. jwnarl says:

That person who said Hillis had his chance but he fumbled and got into McDaniels doghouse, with that thinking and all those fumbles Moreno had in a stretch, why did his playing time stay the same or increase?

probably a comment directed at casinoroyal19.

  18. babychamp-broncos^ says:

patientbronco—whether or not hillis gets the 1st down or not he has a better chance of getting the first than moreno and plus its the fact that mcdaniels is not even givin him a chance..thats wuts really bothering us…he’s not even givin jordan a shot at redzone attempts…hillis can be put in to disguise the play and run a play action n orton can hit marshall down the field…its many ways he can use hillis but like we all established mcd is stubborn n is more than likely not goin to give hillis any touches…

on another note royal and gaffney have no touchdowns…why arent these guys being used more especially scheffler…this offense has become to predictable

  19. USC#1 says:

Just came back from the NFL site. Just totally overwhelmed with Raiders fan. All they wanted to do was talk about their great Raiders. What a joke. All hating on us. But, I handle myself very well. I have to use a different name on their because someone else has USC#1. Over there I am bestuscfan. So, I wanted to talk about the eagles but where is everyone. You all seem to go to bed early.

  20. babychamp-broncos^ says:

Wut up USC#1….wuts yo thoughts on the philly game?

  21. USC#1 says:

I believe Dawkins will come out and play inspired. Watch out eagles fan. We have to be careful because Eagles fans are really rude. They will throw things and boo anyone. they make raiders fan look like saints. Go Broncos. Good Night bronco country.

  22. atwaters da man says:

Unfortunately the Raiders of all teams reminded us how to run the “Broncos” stretch play: You need a run who has the speed to get to outside so the defenders over commit and the cut back is wide open.

I understand the change in philosophy of the pulling guard POWER game-Basically we are tougher than you and are going to over power you- but we are built with athletic O-Line men that are better suited for Zone blocking. If we are going to play power than we need to do what we did earlier in the season which is put a big hog (O-Line/ Hamilton @ FB) we also need to put a Tackle at TE and have Graham and Marshall as possible pass threats so we don’t get 11 in the box.

We also need to put in a run who can break tackles and run over people…ala #22 Hillis.

I think the problem is MCD thinks we have L. Mankins @ Guard who is a power player and we don’t.

We also have been so uncreative that teams don’t have to play us honestly. When Larsen goes in the game 9 times out of 10 it is run. If your not going to let hillis run with the rock then at least let him play a couple plays at fullback. Run a running play, then with the exact same look run Play Action. I know I’m not qualified to be a coach but just have enough creativity to make teams play us honestly.

If you don’t have threat of the run it is much harder to pass and if you don’t do Play Action the other Defense is not on there heals.

Regardless who is in we need to attack on both sides of the ball! The Eagles are one of the best screen teams in the league so DJ, Ayers and Doom on your way to the QB make sure you knock there RB on his back. We need -have- to dictate the tempo. We need to act like we are on offense when are Defense is on the field like we did early in the season! Take there MF heads off and attack enough to through both the Eagles Offense and Defense completely off balance.

Speaking of screens we should be able to run some on a very aggressive Defense this week.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS FOR US TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL! If we play up our style of football and get a little help from up above we will when this week and the sky is once again the limit!

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  23. broncos20 says:

let Royal play,,,i want him to outplay Desean Jackson,,,Champ, contain this kid,,too much energy running around in a big man’s game….lol

  24. atwaters da man says:

3rd and short has some how become a weakness? The last 12 years all we needed was to get to 3rd and manageable -3,4 even 6 yards- and we would get a almost automatic 1st down. Now 3rd and 2inchs is not only a problem, but it is about to cost a great team, in a great city the playoffs. Hillis has shown that he can get 3 yards with 4 guys on his back so it seems like just plain common sense.

I’m just sick of hearing about penalties and excuses. At the end of the day you want to get to 3rd down and less than 4 yards. When we do we should convert…period.

B DAWK WE NEED EVERYTHING YOU GOT PLAYER!! This game is really the entire season wrapped into 60 minutes. If we win we have a very good chance of the post season, a new season. We will pull it together and we will be a team NO ONE is going to want to see in January!

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. monodono says:

WHO CARE’s ! ! ! It doesn’t mean a damn thing if they don’t win, except Those players will probably want more money next year. WHO F’n CARE’s?!

  26. timmah says:

I don’t only think Peyton Hillis should be there on third and short/long,(only for the fact he is a power house and he can actually catch the ball), but also I think we should play action and throw to sheffler some of the times too. Make the defense think a little bit. As most of you guys already said McD has a plan and no matter the situation he is going with it. Stupidity as I call it. I think a plan is good but when you are getting dominated at the running game and passing game then during that time you should put someone in for a spark, and Lamont Jordan was not that spark at all. oh my gosh. Anyways if the Broncos can stop the long passing game by McNabb and company and make him throw short which is his weakness we should win this game. As many times as the best deep throwers tried to throw deep on us I think only Pittsburg is the only successful team that did. We just need to keep them on short yards and not give the big play. Monodono why so negative? The season isn’t over yet, let it play out and then decide to bash the Broncos.

    Go Broncos!!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

monodono, you did throw me for a loop there, you are usually so well spoken, I’ll put that one on a 3:00 am post and a rough night to go with it. LOL.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

A little clarification on how Hillis season really started straight from my good bad ugly pieces:

2nd game against Cleveland. Opening K.O. fumble by Hillis while untouched, no wonder he didn’t return one after that.

3rd game against Oakland. On O: I hate to bring up his name again, but Hillis blew it again for us at the beginning of the game for the 2nd week in a row, this time with a stupid penalty on 1st and goal at the 1, then we end up coming out of there with no points.

4th game against Dallas. On ST: For the third game in a row, Hillis starts the game with a killer bad play, this time with a 10 yd penalty on the kick off to get us starting at the 10. Then later on he loses his cool when he is called for another penalty on ST, a block in the back he had clearly committed. Can Hillis be a one year wonder? I hope not, but he better figure things out pretty quickly, he is now firmly right at the door step of McD’s doghouse.

Those are the hard facts of how the season started for Hillis, I saw it, I wrote it, no disputing that, he dug himself a deep hole right off the bat and somehow hasn’t found a way out of it, this is a cruel league, but it is what it is. I think he could help us on short yardage, no doubt, but the bigger issue is McD must open up the play book if what we see isn’t all he’s got, which I not so sure of. Only a new approach on short yardage will give us a shot at the promise land, like I said on another blog, we must come up with a game plan that is radically different than what we have been doing so far, it is by now totally stale, predictable to the max and surprises no one, everyone is ready for nearly our every moves. To have a shot against the Eagles, McD must baffle our minds and the Eagles with new plays and have plenty of explosive plays in that mix as to SHOCK AND AWE all of us, specially the Eagles. It shall be a high scoring game, and game planning the way we have so far for it will bring us a loss even if the execution is perfect. This is the week where we learn a lot about McD. Just my opinion.

  29. oldsouthstander says:

When the 2009 schedule came out, I felt that the Broncos would beat the Eagles if the Eagles weren’t in the playoff hunt. Although where the Eagles will stand in the playoff picture depends totally on the outcome of their game vs Dallas (Win and they’re in first place, lose and they’re a wild card team.), and this Broncos game is therefore “meaningless”, I say:
    Ealges 35, Broncos 20.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

oldsouthstander, when the schedule came out, I wrote the game at the Eagles in the loss column, so it is even harder for me to imagine what we can come up with that will be good enough to beat them now that they are in a must win game to win their division. A gigantic mountain of a climb is in front of our team, I know everyone deserves a Christmas, that been said, I hope they don’t get one and spend every day this week working on the tall order that’s in front of them. They will have a couple months off after the season to enjoy their Christmas while most people will be slaving away to make ends meet anyway. Go to work and give it your all this week, this is most likely our season and us fan would be having a very difficult time to swallow up a similar ending to two seasons in a row. We all deserve better in Bronco Country.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

This wild card thing has me bewildered, no one thinks anything of winning the division anymore, what’s up with that, lack of pride? Just because you make the playoffs doesn’t make up for not winning the division, you would have to at least win the conference championship to make up for it, tough task for a wild card, so I, unlike oldsouthstander, I do believe that this game is a must win game for the Eagles. And, mathematicians, please, do yourselves a favor, don’t waste your must win game mathematical theory on me, it would be an absolute waste of time as you must know by now. LOL.

  32. sndvl says:

Winning the division guarantees you a home playoff game! There also has been success from the wild card spot over the last decade or so. But I would rather take my chances at home in January, then on the road. We blew that in our first must win game. Orton got hurt then came the untimely Moreno fumble. And falling flat on our face to a division bottom dweller ( and that is giving Oakland credit) at home is not the way to earn a wild card spot either. The 2nd must win game. So now on to Philly. And our third must win game of the season. Odds are stacked against us. Every game this year I felt we had a shot to win. This one has me feeling uneasy. I guess a loss to that team I really hate has sparked this sentiment. I really hope the adage- 3rd times a charm rings true! I dont think its gonna be a shootout like a lot of people are expecting. Matter of fact, points might be hard to come by. Both teams have everything riding on this game. I just hope we didnt lose all of the wind in our sails last week.
As for Hillis, everybody has made their fair share of mistakes this season. IDK, what he was even doing out there returning kicks in the 1st place. Fumbles? They are all guilty. Except the O-line. And maybe Marshall. Then again Royal as well. Seeing as how he rarely gets the rock in this year. Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is how can he atone for his mistakes when he is riding the bench. 10 carries. Thats all Id like to see. A first down or two, maybe even a TD. At the goal line… thats all I have to say about that!
Merry Christmas to everybody in Broncos Country, GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

  33. baylinorcrush says:

sndvl, bummer you’re analogy of 3rd time is a charm doesn’t work for me because I have this as our 4th must win game. LOL. First three: SD home, at Washington, Oakland Sunday. Happy Holidays to you too.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

And you are not the only one feeling uneasy about this one, so far 6 picks, only two with the Broncos winning, and these picks are mostly from true die hard Bronco fans, I can attest.

  35. sndvl says:

One last thought…and please bear with me. Strength of Victory. The fourth tiebreaker! After head to head, conference winning % and common games minimum of 4. For the sake of argument-Houston; Tennesee and Pittsburgh are eliminated due to conference percentage. They all have 7 losses. That leaves Jacksonville, Miami and NY. On the outside looking in. Matchups this week- Jax @ NE. Houston @ Miami. NY @ INDY. Broncos @ Philly.
Hypothetically- We fall short. But so does Jax and NY. Miami wins. NY is eliminated. Three way conference mark of 6-5 for Jax, Miami and Denver! If i did the math correct, all we would have to do is win against KC at home and we win the Strength of Victory tiebreaker. Its close.
The 3rd tie breaker breaks down like this- We went 1-1 against San Diego. Miami lost. Miami went 1-1 against New England. We beat them. We both lost to Indy and even if they beat Pittsburgh- we are still tied. As for Jacksonville- lost twice to Indy. Beat KC. But lost the head to head against Miami. That makes their game in NE must win. Not an easy task. So far the teams we beat have a combined record of 57-55; Miami 43-55 and Jacksonville 30-54.
So yeah! I’m probably way off. But thats what I got. The best I can do as a gift to my Broncos Country brethren for Christmas. Happy Holidays and once again GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!
ps- IF the team wants to go ahead and just beat Philly, then all of this will not matter. ok- my head is spinning

  36. sndvl says:

baylin, let me make my first official pick of the season- 23-21. Denver

  37. TheRoyalBeast says:

I hear ya Baylin, He fumbled on KR but later in that game made up for it with a RUSHING touchdown. He had no place on KR/Special teams to begin with. There was a retty clear outline Shanny left (I know new coaches do their thing but you’ve gotta learn form where payers were utitlized the year before)….and Hillis was a great runner with catching capabilities…not a returner.

Plus this power running is sickening….even in Madden its annoying…can barely get a runnning game going cuz its always been said…our Oline isnt the biggest…they are just the most athletic so thats why the Zone blocking scheme worked for us…Hell, we made it famous. And yes McD is predictable in everything he does and then looks disappointed when it doesnt work….no $h*+ sherlock….hasnt worked all season. Open up that playbook because if he was saving it for the playoffs he better think again cuz at this rate we might not make the playoffs.

No matter what happens when I predict a bronco game its with the Broncos winning…sure I could predict a possible scor eif the broncos were to lose…but I’d rather not (even tho it goes through my head), I am speaking on best case scenarios…on that note the Broncos win..24-21

  38. TheRoyalBeast says:

wow…thought i sent my message a long time ago guess not…looks lke u beat me to the punch sndvl…but our predictions are real close…heres hoping they come true

  39. blum says:

Some of you are not looking at the whole play you are mad because
Hillis is not in but I don’t care who you have in at rb if you don’t stop
penatration it doesn’t matter. Now don’t get me wrong I believe Hillis
should be playing before jordan and we need to do something else on
3rd and 1 besides run up the gut. all I’m saying is look at the line blocking on thoses plays.
My other comment is this team is alot better than I thought they would
be so anything more they do this season is a bonus

    GO BRONCOS

  40. baylinorcrush says:

sndvl, thanks for the “please, bear with me” warning. LOL. Last week I got in a similar deep into the tiebreaker possibilities for the division title race, while we still had a good chance if we won out. Of course that’s all irrelevant now, but it did make me dizzy just like it did you today, we do still have a shot if we lose to the Eagles, but we definitely would first need to beat KC, a divisional opponent at home, something we haven’t yet done this season. So, as I already experienced a major draw back with us losing the division therefore all my tie breakers were fruitless, I’m going to leave it up to you guys to figure it out for me from now on, so I can save my time for more constructive things. LOL.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, loved the Sherlock reference, LMAO!!!

  42. baylinorcrush says:

And like you regardless of the game, I cannot bring myself to make a score pick with us losing, I just can’t. In my yearly predictions, I will pick losses but not on game week. I’ll post my pick Saturday, which will probably be a one point win, so in essence it shows you I don’t really believe in a win, just calling it as I see it.

  43. matt203 says:

As long as McDaniels dosen’t play Hillis, the broncos rushing attack dosen’t have much of a chance : (

  44. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

For god’s sake, Hillis is not better than the guys ahead of him. Effing face-palm.

  45. tjnartw says:

Blum, I’m with you man. a lot of the people on this site during the off season didn’t think that the Broncos would have a winning season this year because Cutler was traded and McDaniels was bringing in a lot of ex-patriots and so on and so on. But if they lose to Philly, and beat Kansas City they’ll still be 9-7 this year without that probowl QB. Which by the way he has something like 25 int’s and 19 or 20 td’s. I remember 1 fan who even predicted that the Broncos would be giving the Lions a run for the no 1 over all pick next draft.
I do think that the offense is a little predictable at this time and that makes me a little nervous at this point of the season. Not because we might not make the playoffs, but because we might be about to lose some much needed fans. It kinda sounds like some of you might quit rooting for the Broncos and that thought makes a tad sad.
Am hoping for a win this weekend against the Eagles but am not staking my life or mentality on it. 10 and 6 for the season would be better than 9-7 which would be better than 8-8 but if that is all we are good for this year than so be it. I’ll still love our Broncos and I’ll still love our fans.
But you can’t have my BUD LIGHT. LOL
GO BRONCOS and I’m proud of you guys.

  46. tjnartw says:

Sry, and that thought makes me a tad sad.

  47. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

I dont know who mentioned it but someone said Hillis not getting a chance is whats pissing us fans off. I totally agree. Just give the guy a chance.

  48. slicvic12 says:

merry christmas philly with that pass interference call,,,,bs
