Broncos Country Gets Another Volunteer

April 28th, 2012 - 2:09pm by Kenny Legan

Is Denver becoming Knoxville West?

With its fifth round selection, Denver picked former University of Tennessee defensive lineman Malik Jackson, making him the fourth Volunteer on the Broncos roster, the most out of any school. He joins punter Britton Colquitt, quarterback Peyton Manning and defensive end Robert Ayers.

“I feel like we’ve some good Tennessee guys, so hopefully they’ll be welcoming me with open arms and I’m pretty excited to play with those kinds of guys,” Jackson said.

Malik will look to contribute alongside Denver’s first pick, Derek Wolfe, as a rookie on the defensive line. Malik said the Broncos project him as a defensive end — where he played at USC before transferring to Tennessee — and he believes his long wingspan gives him an advantage on the edge.

“I feel that some of my strengths are my arm length — I have really good, lengthy arms and I feel that I can use them well,” Jackson said. “I’ve got good feet to come up off the edge. I’m pretty knowledgeable about pass rush moves. I pretty much feel that I’m an all-around good defensive end. There are some skills I know I need to work on so I’m ready to get up to Denver and have them check me out, see how I look, and see if they have something I can work on.”

I have to agree with the TV guy there OT… Teddy knows what he’s talking about, and Peyton has never helped his back-up… we were talking about it the other day and teaching is just not a quality that Manning has shown he posesses…

  2. OrangeTsunami says:

He obviously hates the Broncos.. Herm and Jaws had it right, Brock will be fine

  3. Louisianabroncofan says:

thats wierd. me and bt disagree.

  4. millertime2 says:

AB, lol its all good bro, is the guy at least good

  5. OrangeTsunami says:

Lmfao BT! Jeff Sorgi and Curtis Painter couldn’t be “mentored” by Jesus Christ himself buddy!!! Quit hating!

  6. Bronco_Turtle says:

    I think he hates Manning… if I had to guess… the whole Colts/Patriots thing…

Brock may be fine, but it will not be from Peyton’s mentoring unfortunately… Hopefully Elway shows him what’s up

  7. alaskanbronco06 says:

MT I think so! I think he can be big subbing in and on ST but in a year or two he may end up starting. I think he needs to bulk up about 10 pounds though.

  8. Bronco_Turtle says:

Manning = Great field General that puts his guys in the right place to make good plays… that is completely different from helping those guys understand ‘Why’ they are now in the right place to make those plays…

Manning is a great leader, but has not been a good teacher

  9. skillz_inc says:

Eagles add another solid prospect Marvin Mcnutt

  10. OrangeTsunami says:

I just don’t know if that’s true, and nor do you… What does he exactly have to teach him anyway? Brock is literally going to be by Peyton’s side day in and day out and see him DO it… Seems like a pretty good class room to me…

  11. OrangeTsunami says:

I never knew that being teacher was a job responsibility of a QB… Guess there is no need for a coaching staff.. Lol. It’s just media crap, which for some reason you are buying into…

  12. alaskanbronco06 says:

Well everyone is different some learn by watching and doing others need to be sat 1 on 1 and taught.

Brock will be able to watch PM day in and day out. Hopefully he can learn a lot just by watching.

  13. Bronco_Turtle says:

Maybe OT… but the evidence (which will guide you to the answer in any field when properly examined and understood) would point to Manning being a Great leader and poor teacher…

as always, just an oppinion… and as usual there is the criteria I use to make said oppinion

  14. denver0723 says:

People forget that Manning is a QB, not a QB coach. His job is to learn the playbook, and make himself better. It is not his job to coach up Osweiler. We have a coaching staff to do that. Manning will be a mentor in the fact that he will lead by example. Osweiler will get to watch and learn from Manning, while being coached up by our COACHES and most likely Elway as well.

  15. Louisianabroncofan says:

exactly ot. he doesnt know. has no idea how manning conducts his business and it is the coaches who coach, and manning just does what he does and that rubs off on a player following behind him like brock. theres just a hate for manning there i cant explain.

  16. OrangeTsunami says:

Do you guys realize that there is a QB coach and several other people on the coaching staff, whose sole responsibilities revolve around the QB’s? They have there own meetings, and do everything together.. You are acting like Manning is going to be hiding things from Brock or something… LMFAO!!!

  17. Bronco_Turtle says:

People forget that as the Leader of your team it should be your responsibility to make sure everyone knows why they are doing what they are doing, that way if by chance (or by neck injury) you can’t play your team doesn’t fall of the face of the earth and draft your replacement…

  18. OrangeTsunami says:

This is also why we took a QB THIS year, so that the kid would have several years to pick everything up

  19. Bronco_Turtle says:

OT… that’a reach… I’m saying that being a great QB does not make you a good mentor, most of that is on Osweiler and his talent…

you may have missed the point

  20. skillz_inc says:

Ravens just grabbed tommy streeter the rich get richer lol

  21. alaskanbronco06 says:

Brock is going to be taught by the coaching staff. And he will be with PM day in and day out. When PM is working with the team Brock needs to pay close attention. You can learn a lot just by watching.

  22. OrangeTsunami says:

Nope. You said PM won’t “mentor” Brock, when in reality mentoring involves spending time together, going through progressions, etc, and the QB’s have NO choice but spend the entire day together….. You are making something out of nothing

  23. Bronco_Turtle says:

If Peyton was a good Mentor he would still have a job in Indy… Facts are facts and his lack of Prepping his replacement led to his being dismissed from his position… and coming to Denver

What makes him different this year than last (besides the fused vertabrae?)

  24. buck484 says:

I heard several of the top retired qbs saying that they never actually tutored the incoming qbs. Their job could be found in the film room. How to break down film etc.

  25. Louisianabroncofan says:

so if manning had just mentored painter better they would have been superbowl contenders? doubt it. the lack of a quality backup qb in indy was not because manning didnt “teach” one, it was because the front office failed to get a quality qb back there. and they lost their job as a result of that.

  26. Bronco_Turtle says:

And PM won’t ‘Mentor’ Os… he may show him by example but that by definition is not Mentoring…

Symantics maybe.. but the point if very valid

  27. Bronco_Turtle says:

Where did you get ‘Superbowl Contender’ out of ‘Would still have a job in Indy’ LBF?

  28. skillz_inc says:

That is def not why Peyton is not in Indy turtle lmao but good try it had to do with economics health and opportunity in Andrew Luck period

  29. OrangeTsunami says:

Are you seriously saying the Jeff Sergi and Curtis Painter didn’t make it b/c PM didn’t do a good job “teaching”….. Come on man……..

  30. alaskanbronco06 says:

Buck along with what you said. If you listen to rookie/young QBs they often say they will watch the vet QB like a hawk and take notes just on how they do things and that you can learn a lot just by watching. Which is what ive been trying to say.

  31. Louisianabroncofan says:

had andrew luck not been available in this years draft, manning would still be in indy. lucky for us, luck was available.

  32. strandoftds says:

I don`t think Vontaze Burfict even gets drafted. If he doesn`t, then go after him as a UFA. Way less of a risk being not drafted.

  33. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand I kinda hope he does become a UDFA along with a few other players and Denver targets them. Burfict would be a lot lower risk but a ton of upside and can have a big boom.

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

Skillz… cause and affect buddy… they got Luck because they had the number 1 pick, because Peyton didn’t play (and his contract had handicapped the team to the point of ‘exactly what happened last year’) and he had not prepaired a replacement and therefor there was no need for Peyton…

    Plain and Simple

  35. OrangeTsunami says:

BT – you do realize that it’s hypocritical for you to keep saying how bad PM’s injuries are, and then not being on board with draft a QB… Lmfao! What exactly do you want?? Seems like you’re jump a grumpy guy since you know left…..

  36. OrangeTsunami says:

    *just a grumpy guy

  37. Bronco_Turtle says:

Bad ‘Luck’ for us… but your right LBF… it is some sort of Luck :o

  38. Louisianabroncofan says:

i’m saying that with peyton, they were a superbowl contender year in and year out, and without him the only way to keep that contention, his back up has to be close to what peyton was. superbowl maybe was an over statement. and i was slightly exaggerating the point.

  39. denver0723 says:

Some people are just never satisfied, OT. It isn’t worth the argument. If Turtle is upset with having Manning and having Osweiler develop behind him with the help of coaches and Elway, then let him be upset about it. He has an opinion, and he is voicing it haha. He is allowed to reserve optimism.

Personally I think we are going to be fine with the QB situation. Manning is darn good, and Osweiler has the arm and the potential to be darn good too. And Osweiler has 3 years to develop. And if in that 3 years he doesn’t show progress, we have 3 future drafts to get a better player under center.

And honestly, (not directed at anyone) I think there is still a lot of Bronco fans who would have been angry regardless of who we drafted at QB (whether it be this year or another year) because they are still upset that we traded away Tebow. It was the same when we traded Cutler. Once you fall in love with a player, it is hard to accept their replacement.

  40. Bronco_Turtle says:

How can you say I’m not onboard with Os… (eesh) I said he wouldn’t learn from Peyton…

OT.. do you need a nap…? your dots aren’t exactly connecting to make a picture any more

  41. skillz_inc says:

that is nt what u said up before lol too funny bring it on back now big guy rewind hehehe

  42. Bronco_Turtle says:

I think Os could be good… and with Peytons shelf life, he dang well better be, or we will be debating Landry Jones or Matt Barkely next Spring…

  43. strandoftds says:

I think the Broncos are attempting to keep away from risky players with off the field issues. All of our draft picks I`ve read about say great or good charactar. I bet Pat Bowlen has had enough with problem children such as Parrish Cox which first comes to mind. Just think that that might be the case.

  44. Louisianabroncofan says:

i think ot just nailed the root of bt’s problem with the broncos.

  45. singer says:

I am very happy with this draft class. I for one cannot see the future and will look forward to this years team success. I’ve been a Bronco’s fan since 76 through the bad and the good. I suppose there has always been “fans” who see nothing but negative in all the team does, I’ve simply never been exposed to them because there was no internet or blog. Instant gratification is rarely a good thing and often causes some long term problems. I’ll probably keep reading the team blogs but I am really tired of the “fans” who act like spoiled kids who didn’t get exactly what they wanted for xmas. I also know that nobody cares what i say or think but I just had to state my thoughts. Just my opinion.

  46. Bronco_Turtle says:

Skillz, cut and paste where I ever said anything negative about Os… I think we took him early, but never once said anything negative..

I’ve said the same thing… over and over, but to save you from boredom I say it in many many ways…

  47. strandoftds says:

Alaska, I`d sure like to get Burfict.

  48. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yea I said a while ago that cause what happened with Cox that I think Denver may shy away from red flags off the field.

Burfict is a high risk but we wouldnt really lose anything if he was a UDFA (only 1 makes the team on avg per year) and he didnt Boom. But we could get a star as a UDFA if he does boom. High risk character dont lose anything as a UDFA but takes a chance on the huge boom basically. IMO its worth it.

  49. Bronco_Turtle says:

    What up Strand!

I also would love to see Burfict in Dove Valley…

  50. buck484 says:

I believe if your starting qb is busy holding a rookies hand, hes not spending his time preparing for his job of winning games. He must stay focussed on winning the game at hand and leaving the coaching up of rookies to the coaches.
