Broncos Country Gets Another Volunteer

April 28th, 2012 - 2:09pm by Kenny Legan

Is Denver becoming Knoxville West?

With its fifth round selection, Denver picked former University of Tennessee defensive lineman Malik Jackson, making him the fourth Volunteer on the Broncos roster, the most out of any school. He joins punter Britton Colquitt, quarterback Peyton Manning and defensive end Robert Ayers.

“I feel like we’ve some good Tennessee guys, so hopefully they’ll be welcoming me with open arms and I’m pretty excited to play with those kinds of guys,” Jackson said.

Malik will look to contribute alongside Denver’s first pick, Derek Wolfe, as a rookie on the defensive line. Malik said the Broncos project him as a defensive end — where he played at USC before transferring to Tennessee — and he believes his long wingspan gives him an advantage on the edge.

“I feel that some of my strengths are my arm length — I have really good, lengthy arms and I feel that I can use them well,” Jackson said. “I’ve got good feet to come up off the edge. I’m pretty knowledgeable about pass rush moves. I pretty much feel that I’m an all-around good defensive end. There are some skills I know I need to work on so I’m ready to get up to Denver and have them check me out, see how I look, and see if they have something I can work on.”

There’s certainly an advantage with Stokely/Manning chemistry. He’ll be 36 when the season starts.

Deck and Thomas don’t have the best injury history and I would have like to see a wideout picked as insurance for those 2

Aww come on Mayock. Get the position at least right if you cant get the name. Ugh.

  3. skillz_inc says:

Man ab u liked the whole N.C. State team lol ;)

  4. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand I know we have no more picks. I was hoping he wouldve been Denvers LB pick or end up a UDFA.

  5. Bronco_Turtle says:

Now that all the picks are in

    Denver 2012 Draft = C-

Could go as high as a B if in two years we have the 4-5 starters we were promised by EFX…

    Denver 2011 Draft = B

Miller is a Game Changer, and as it is the Second year for these guys (and they are all still on the Roster) I think it was a very solid Draft…

Denver 2010… Who cares as it was still McD calling the shots… the guys that made it from that class are welcome Broncos and I love them, but their leashes have to be very short…

  6. strandoftds says:

We`ll get a WR after the draft, UFA that is. Hey if Streeter is their call him.

  7. Atwater4HOF says:

AB his frame looks like a safety, 233 is still small. Just read the scout reports on him, he’s too small to shed blocks and take backs head on. Maybe he’ll be a good 3rd down LB who can cover backs and tight ends.

  8. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Streeter is a Raven Strand

  9. Atwater4HOF says:

    Ravens got Streeter

  10. Bronco_Turtle says:

I’m out for awhile… talk to you guys soon

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

  11. strandoftds says:

Just messing around Alaska, your more ontop of things than I am. LOL

  12. skillz_inc says:

Turbins rb mate just went as well

  13. BladeRunner1812 says:

True enough that one draft does not a team make, but if a team can’t draft well, they’re in a lot of trouble. They reached for Wolfe, and are taking a real chance with Bolden. The Broncos are not so talent laden that they can afford to make these kinds of picks, at least not in my opinion.

  14. strandoftds says:

Dad burn it, Streeter is gone?! Bummer!

  15. alaskanbronco06 says:

4HOF Have you missed that I said he will be a starter IMO in a year or two but he has to bulk up another 10 pounds?

Fox loves speed LBs. Hes a little to heavy to be a S. His size is better fit for a faster LB.

We will see. You dont think he will ever be a starter I disagree and think in a year or two he will be.

  16. Atwater4HOF says:

We certainly did not get many starters in this draft. Especially in a “win-now” team mode. Wolfe is the only starter. Hillman and Bolden will see decent time

  17. skillz_inc says:

    agreed blade

  18. Atwater4HOF says:

AB no I can read. I said he doesn’t look like he has the frame to do that.

I didn’t say he SHOULD be a safety, I said he looks like one. As in he looks small

  19. alaskanbronco06 says:

Dwight Jones and Marquies Maze are still there both may end up as UDFA WRs.

  20. Atwater4HOF says:

For example Brandon Jacobs is huge and looks like a defensive end, I don’t think he should be one, I just think he looks like one

  21. strandoftds says:

I bet Bolden`s job will be to cover the TE in Nickel and Dime packages.

  22. skillz_inc says:

    I love examples ;)

  23. Atwater4HOF says:

    Well said blade

  24. alaskanbronco06 says:

Well like I said before 4HOF I disagree. I think he can bulk up another 10 and that in a year or two he will be a starter. Now what he does as a starter I have no idea.

  25. skillz_inc says:

i like the name FUGGER LOL

  26. alaskanbronco06 says:

4HOF well Doom is a undersized DE and is a stud. Maybe Trevathan can be a undersized LB that can at least become a starter ;)

  27. skillz_inc says:

    you fugger ab ;)

that was an example and i love examples ;)

  28. BladeRunner1812 says:

Atwater – agreed! If you’re going to be in a “win-now” mode, you have to be on top of your game every step of the way.

  29. alaskanbronco06 says:

Lol Skillz i did that just for you.

  30. Atwater4HOF says:

Olinemen have said that Doom as an advantage because of the long arms and leverage he can play with at his height.

  31. Atwater4HOF says:

Doom isn’t a great Dlinemen against the run, he’s a beast as a pass rusher though. Oh well, this draft was very average to me and I truly don’t think we are much better today than we were Thursday before the draft. Just my opinion

  32. skillz_inc says:

    Agreed atwater AGREED

  33. alaskanbronco06 says:

Maybe Trevathan has an advantage with his size? Obviously there is something there the FO saw and really liked.

Im just saying dont right Trevathan off because of his size. Many did that with Doom look how that turned out.

  34. Atwater4HOF says:

Trevathan isn’t a Dlinemen… he isn’t going to jam an olinemen and use that leverage in a pass rush.

Trevathan would have been fine as an UDFA much better players available at the spot he was taken.

  35. Atwater4HOF says:

Oh and Wolfe is going to be used as a DE. Essentially taking Ayers spot. DE on 1st and 2nd and moves inside on 3rd.

So at the end of the day, we still didn’t get ourselves a DT

  36. mainBroncos60 says:

Other than money, is there a limit on how many UDFA’s we can take?

  37. alaskanbronco06 says:

You failed to see my point. I know he isnt a Dlinemen. He is a speedy LB. Doom was undersized and is a stud DE. So dont judge a player because of their size.

Rice was considered to small. Forte was to big. Both are top 5 RBs. James Harrison was to small. He is a best of a pass rusher.

Size isnt everything in the NFL is my point. So dont write off Trevathan yet because of his size.

  38. alaskanbronco06 says:

    New Blog

  39. Atwater4HOF says:

But in Rice and Doom’s situation being small IS an advantage. Rice wasn’t really written off, he was drafted in the 2nd round.

You failed to see MY point. I’m fine with bringing him on, but not when Streeter, McNutt, and Minnifield were still available. He was rated very low and would have likely been a UDFA

  40. skillz_inc says:

two players from the University of Montana whoo hoo for my hometown team yay !

  41. skillz_inc says:

    drafted that is lol

  42. BladeRunner1812 says:

For all the times Elway said they were going to draft “impact” players, who do you think is actually going to have an impact this year?
