Broncos Bring Back Greisen

April 29th, 2010 - 4:43pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos on Thursday signed unrestricted free-agent linebacker Nick Greisen, who spent the 2009 season with the Broncos — on injured reserve.

The ninth-year player said missing the entire season was one of the hardest things he has had to endure in his NFL career, and he expects to prove his worth to his teammates and coaches in 2010.

“I came in here and I really had three or four days of training camp, and none of the guys really got to know me as a football player and what I can do on the field,” he said. “I actually have been in the league for eight years for a good reason — it’s not just that I’ve slipped through the cracks, but because I was able to succeed in the NFL and help teams win.

“Hopefully next year I’ll get that opportunity to prove to guys that I deserve to be here.”

Previously, Greisen has played for Baltimore, Jacksonville and the New York Giants. He has appeared in 98 regular-season games with 33 starts and five postseason contests with one start. He has amassed 305 tackles, four sacks, one interception, 12 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries in his career. He has also contributed seven tackles and four-special teams stops in the playoffs.

I read an article earlier that stated, without a CBA in place,a team cannot raise a players salary by more than 30%,but can give that player more UPFRONT money.Hopefully that’s why we ain’t signed Doom to a bigger contract, supposidly when a new CBA is put in place all the teams will be making new contracts with their RFA’s???

Not a lot of teams are willing to give a player a new contract,if they have to give a LOT of upfront money, because if an injury,or off the field issue causes a player to miss games they will have to pay them anyway, unless the contract has clauses in it,I hope I am perceiving the article correctly, don’t wanna pass on bogus imformation on purpose.

  5. louisianabroncofan says:

well i guess after reading all of that from last night i will put my belated two cents in. i dont think its about age, i think its about mindset and opinion. some people may be of the mindset that comparisons to elway are not that big of a deal and maybe legitimate but to others it is unacceptable. neither person can understand the mindset of the other. thats normal. kind of like poitics, liberals cant be convinced of what conservatives think and vice versa. in other words that fight can go on forever because both sides whole heartedly think you are right and the other person is way off. in the end your both right, in your opinion. and you cant be proved wrong. it is fun to read tho!
i am with baylin and say that tebow comparisons to elway are almost criminal. but if florio’s mom thinks its legitimate i just have to think she’s wrong. but again i cant prove it. i am 32 as of april 19th tho so i guess i’m pretty smart.

  6. florio's_mom says:

Well im sure glad we got rid of that torain guy. He reminded me a TD. that’s against the law. LOL

BTW my name is florio’s_mom but im really a dude. just sayin. :D

  7. louisianabroncofan says:

oh. weil okay. mr. florio’s mom then. and yes comparing torain to td is criminal too. just sayin…

It’s been a while Bronco Nation….but I am back…. I love a lot of the moves we made and loved how we ran the draft….

By the way I was reading the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and they devoted a whole two pages for Demaryius “Bay-Bay” Thomas…..all in all the kid grew up rough and still has never been in trouble with the law…..he grew up with his uncle and aunt because his father was away in the army….his mother and grandmother are both in federal prison and his mom isn’t supposed to be out until 2017…..he reminds me of me growing up and stuff and just the things I was able to accomplish…I am pround to have him as a Bronco…..he credits church and football for him never getting in trouble…and said that he will let nothing get in the way of him and football……..I am curently doing a bio on a couple of players for the news…and I will post their bios when I finish with them….take care and God Bless Bronco Nation

  9. florio's_mom says:

Oh yeah and that rookie beadles has hair like nalen. We should cut him before minicamp. LOL :D

  10. Orange_Crusher says:

    My forty one cents worth..lol

It might be Elways own fault that he gets compared to every Bronco QB. He set an incredibly high standard for QB’s. He gave us 16 years of Thrills and Spills, made all of our Bronco dreams come true then rode off into the sunset leaving a shadow taller than a Redwood and a gaping hole in our team. I think people will always compare every Bronco QB to the Great JE until one comes along that makes us let go of the past and revel in the present..

Elway, Young, Moreno, Favre, etc all set high benchmarks that good QB’s are compared to…Just as Ryan Leaf, Jeff George, Jamarkas Russell etc set the benchmark on the lower end of the QB comparison meter.

I’m glad that some people can look at a Bronco player and want to compare him with the higher end of the scale than to the lower end. Even if they are totally cheerleading or reaching for straws in their opinion of the player. It’s fun to see how some Bronco fans are soo hopeful.. It surely can’t hurt anything to be overzealous about a player in the offseason?

Anyways, I think it’s okay to compare players to players and past players. It’s okay to compare your new car to your old car, it’s okay to compare your wife to your mom…haha.. It’s just the way the world works… just one mans humble opinion..

I personally think that Tebow is NOT the next JE. There’s really no such thing as the next Elway or Montana or anybody. Each player brings their own individuality to the game. Tebow is just a really, really good college QB that generates a lot of excitement and hope for many to be the next great Bronco freachise QB.

I think the kid has the heart and ability to take us back to the promise land and I’m reservedly excited about it. Same feeling I had in “83″…. I’m sure it will most certainly be nothing less than a spectacular specticle watching it all unfold over the next many years..

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS!!

  11. footballMANIAC says:

So, who is everybody’s bet for starting QB? The immediate one and the future one. Who gets cut (eventually)?

  12. 4broncosjeff says:

Just sitting here eating corn chips and drinking a Orange Crush laughing my butt off. You guys are just funny talking about plungers, flushing black holes. Elway VS Tebow. (funny joke) I agree with Bay. Oh yea old age and R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for the elders. (yea, I agree with Bay) Im 47 and the old age thing really dont hit you till about 42, for me anyway. Then its like,oh I was quite an idiot for thinking that way. So, when you see something at age 20, its like thats cool. Then when you see it at age 47, its like seen that done that.
HISTORY: Those who do not know history are doomed to make the same mistake again.
Us old folks know this to be very true. So, when someone old tells you something, It’s True most of the time.
Someone said that they broke the mold after they made Elway. That my friends, is correct. There will never be another like him. Elway took us to three SB himself and helped us win two others. As far as Tebow, I really hope he can live up to all the hype. That would really be awsome.
The season just cant start soon enough.

    Go Broncos

  13. baylinorcrush says:

OC, is it ok if I compare Orton to Elway? At least he is right handed too, LOL.

  14. 4broncosjeff says:

The immediate starter is Orton. The one who gets cut (eventually) is Orton. He wins both contest. Hmmm, thats a bummer for him.

  15. footballMANIAC says:

I think that you would be wrong in saying Tebow is the “next John Elway”, but not wrong in saying that Tebow reminds you of John Elway. Playing styles can be very similar, and drawing a comparison between two players is not the same as saying one is a copy of the other. Although, personally I don’t see as much closeness between Tebow and Elway as some would like to think. Elway’s arm was incredible. He could be running one way, spot an open reciever, and throw a 60 yard pass across his body to hit that reciever. Tebow doesn’t have nearly as good an arm (but he does have a good arm). Really the only trait that they have strongly in common is that they are/were both athletic quarterbacks. Neither would mind running the ball if they had a good opportunity.

  16. footballMANIAC says:

I agree, 4broncosjeff. But Quinn may be able to edge Orton out at some point for the starting job before Tebow comes in.

  17. 4broncosjeff says:

I forgot the future starter. that winner is Tebow. I would like to see what Quinn can do. I think he will be the looser in this contest. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do on a good team.

    Go Broncos

  18. louisianabroncofan says:

oc i see ur point but think you may have helped my point with your last cupla paragraphs. you described tim tebow and what you think he could become without injecting a legends name in there. i just think some people are off limits when it comes to comparisons to them when the compared person has done nothing. but thats just MY humble opinion. doing it seems wrong. purely an ‘opinion and point of view thing’ tho. not down on others who do it. i just dont personally give it any credibility.
i also am not a big fan of the pick. not because i’m a rabid LSU fan and have hated tebow for the last 3 yrs but because i believe all of the analysts who say he will never develop into an elite qb in this league. when you watch him play his college games he doesnt look like a pro qb at all. i will say tho that if anyone can work his way into something unlikely its him. i cant deny his work ethic and the way he moves people. and i certainly would be the happiest guy on the planet if he does turn into an elite qb and takes us to some superbowl victories. still wouldnt compare him to elway tho. on top of that we could have gotten alot of help with the picks we gave up for him. lamar houston(DT from tennesee) was available when our pick we traded came up and he woulda filled a big need. and the 3rd and 4th round picks could have been a big help for next years team too. instead we got a project that may or may not work.
and ya know what florio beadles does have tom nalen hair. thats funny. he’ll look right at home at guard too. these OL we got in the draft are gonna help the offense immensly. that was a huge problem last year the way were abused at the line of scrimmage. kinda made me sick the way the line just would be thrown around and the play would just look like a total bust. with some big, fresh bodies in there now maybe those plays will work alot better. overall tho i absolutely like what mcdaniels is doing. he’s consistent and you can tell he knows what he’s doing. we should compete for 1st place next year and maybe start a superbowl run in 2011. cannot wait!!

  19. Orange_Crusher says:

yeah, it’s okay bro… Orton has some attributes of Elway.. he’s Tall and Nice and right handed…. lol

I am more interested in comparing our four QB’s with each other. Josh will have to figure out wich one will be the starter. We really have four good QB’s and it should be fun to see the competition.

It is clearly Ortons job to keep or lose based on how he compares to the other three guys.

  20. 4broncosjeff says:

footballMANIAC , I really would like to see Qiunn. If Orton goes down again, thats who I would like to see this year. Then next year open up the comp. Thats how I see it at this point, who really know till we see them in at least camp.

  21. florio's_mom says:

Speaking of comparisons. Doesn’t decker remind you of a stokley/ eddy hybrid?

  22. kase78matt says:

every time i watch tebow talk im more and more impressed the kid loves this team appreciates this team and i guarentee hes the kind of player that will doo everything in his power to win cause he did in floridda and guess what he won!

  23. kase78matt says:

    decker is like eddy mac

  24. broncosfreak30 says:

People don’t get on here and say that Elway and Tebow are the same, that’s not it! They look like they have similar traits! For example, Tebow looks like he wants to win just as much as John did. You can’t go around in life and say “No one ever in life even has one similar trait to John Elway.” Haha, that would be nice, but no. Even though he was VERY unique with his talent and character, other people share those traits just as well…

There will only be ONE John Elway!!! Every Bronco fan knows that!!

BTW…Is anyone here going to the Rams at Broncos game???

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

Decker WANTS to be like Eddy Mac,but he has a LONG way to go to be like him.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

Decker was born in ’87,was the 87th player drafted, and grew up idolizing Eddy Mac,so they let him have the #87,ironic huh????? If he even comes close to being as good as Eddy Mac,I’ll be impressed. But he looks like he has the tools to do it,so we shall see(I’ll be rooting for him).

    BFE

  27. MarshMelo15 says:

Orton will start this year. If Tebow is not ready by next year, Orton may end up starting for that year too. I don’t think Quinn is gonna edge him out this year at all. Maybe next year.

This is how I see it…..Orton starting this year, with Quinn and Brandstater battling it out for the number 2 spot. Which ever one of those two guys loses will be demoted to the practice squad, and finally Tebow will be our #3 on the depth chart.

  28. MarshMelo15 says:

And I have watched a LOT of Minnesota games the past couple of years and Eric Decker is THE REAL DEAL!!!!!!!! He is amazing and I think will end up being a great WR for us Broncos. He runs great routes and has great hands and is absolutely FEARLESS when it comes to going across the middle and making catches. I was stoked when we drafted him!!!!!

  29. NastyNate says:

MarshMelo15 how is it goin.. I say the refs should get paid a couple grand by the Utah oraganization for giving them the win in 3 out of the 4 games they won.. dont you lol
    anyways..
werent you saying before we drafted Decker that you hope we take him?? or was that someone else if it was you GREAAAT CALL lol. i seen his bio on here damn good hands gets open and is built like a brick..
2011 Tebow to Thomas for a TD next drive Tebow to Decker or Royal.. lol I cant wait to see all of them on the feild!

  30. 19bk90 says:

did you watch the minnesota game 2 years agao when they played iowa? :)
    i was there :D

  31. theROYAL19treatment says:

was watchin deckers highlights and he has good hands and nice route running but he gets caught from behind way to much

  32. KooDUDE says:

I might be late when saying this but warren sapp gave our draft a C on NFL total accsess

  33. kase78matt says:

decker is a beast… i hope hes the next eddy mac cause McCaffery is without a doubt my fav receiver of all time he put his heart soul and blood out on the football field and did it time after time.

  34. kase78matt says:

koodude… welcome to the broncos the most over looked or trash talked team in the league… we draft the most stellar college quarter back (proven by stats) 2 amazing receivers.. and addressed our line that lacked depth… i mean we should have used a pick on a power back in my oppinion prolly 2nd or 3rd rnd but we got a college free agent that looks BA

  35. kase78matt says:

royal treatment…. dude he also had to slow down in most of them cause the qb under throws him a lot haha

  36. MarshMelo15 says:

NastyNate….Yeah those darn refs gave it too them for sure. Oh well whats done is done. Now we just need to focus on revamping our bench depth. And if we do that next year we will be great. We were also really hurt by not having George Karl with us. He is a great coach and was the glue to holding all of our characters together.

And yeah that was me saying we need to Draft Decker, and guess what? We did, and I couldnt be happier. I personally think that he is gonna be great and so far he is my favorite pick that we drafted. A definite steal of a draft pick if you ask me. I think he has 2nd round talent. So to say the least I can’t wait to see him on the field this season.

  37. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Decker is probably more similar to a Ricky Proehl. But I can see the Eddy Mac comparisons, although I personally hate comparing like that.

I can see Orton beating out Quinn in a close one. Quinn will be cut around the time Tebow is ready to play full time. It’s sad because I liked the guy, but Tom Brandstater may very well miss the cut this preseason.

  38. kase78matt says:

i think theyll try to trade quinn to a team like arizona or seatlle

  39. baylinorcrush says:

Interesting stuff, the following is what Klis figured we came up with in this blockbuster trade:

It took two drafts and another week of intense concentration to follow the Broncos’ bouncing draft picks, but the results are in on the Jay Cutler trade.

Here’s what the Broncos got: starting quarterback Kyle Orton, starting outside linebacker Robert Ayers, first-round receiver Demaryius Thomas, third-round receiver Eric Decker, one-half of tight end Richard Quinn (Bears’ draft pick plus one more to get him) and one-third of quarterback Tim Tebow (draft pick plus two more).

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Mike Klis is full of good stuff this morning, this is his take on how Tebow will use his skills here, or not?:

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has mentored three quarterbacks — Tom Brady, Matt Cassel and Orton — in his five seasons of coordinating his pocket-oriented, controlled-passing offensive system. In those five seasons, totaling 80 regular-season games, Brady, Cassel and Orton combined for 630 yards rushing.

Tebow, in his final three seasons and 41 games at the University of Florida, rushed for 2,478 yards.

Wouldn’t restricting Tebow’s skills to the pocket be like locking the Kentucky Derby starting gate on Super Saver?

“If he can do something out of the pocket and he deserves to be on the field — that’s the biggest thing — then maybe it would warrant us doing some other things,” McDaniels said Saturday during his rookie minicamp news conference. “But he is going to get trained the exact same way the other guys are getting trained.”

    Which means?

“He will function from the pocket,” McDaniels said. “That’s where he will play.”

Stubborn coach we have, don’t we? But I guess we all already knew that. I wish he didn’t wear the blindfolds on all the time though, amazing what discoveries you can make when you are actually open to new things. His way or the highway is definitely the best way to describe our coach, like it or not that seems to be all we’ll ever get from him. His way better lead into the playoffs, otherwise they are plenty of highways leading out of here, LOL. But to be fair, as I said many times, I will be behind him 100% this season as it will be the first year he’ll have exactly what he wants on the field, then I will be able to assess his HC abilities much better, and there will be no excuses. “Just produce coach” is a fair expectation for this year I would think.

  41. Orange_Crusher says:

I saw Warren Sapp give the broncos some love on the NFL channel last night.. I didn’t know he was cool and open minded like that.

They took Jamie Dukie out of the AFCW segment… haha..

  42. footballMANIAC says:

What is Jamie Dukes’ issue with the Broncos? He’s always against them.

  43. strandoftds says:

Jamie Pukes was on the Atlanta Falcons when they lost in Super Bowl 33 against the MIGHTY BRONCO`S.

  44. Broncomania56 says:

mad_orange_devil_27, Do you really believe that Orton will beat out Quinn? I don’t think Denver would of wasted time bringing him in if they didn’t feel like he would part of the team. With the right elements around him, I see no reason that he is not a better QB than Orton. He is faster, and has a better arm than Orton. It’s hard to judge a guy coming from Cleveland, they were not known for having a good offense. Even Anderson was inconsistent with the Browns and I think he will beat out Linehart for the Starting Position in Arizona.

Orton plays the game safe, but that only works when your a back up. I respect Orton as I though he did a good job at “managing” the game last year, but he does not offer that WOW factor. It will be interesting to see what happens with 4 QB’s on the roster. One thing is for sure, 1 will have to go. I for one think It will be Orton or Brandstater. Only time will tell.

As a fan it’s hard to decide about Brnadstater, because he only saw action in the pre-season last year. Remember his first appearance was awful and his second appearance, he looked good. One thing is for sure, it”s hard to know what McDaniels is thinking, all we can do is speculate. I love the debate though, here is my mock QB line up, come September. Sorry Orton, I think you will be traded….. Only time will tell. GO BRONCOS!!!!!

    1. Quinn
    2. Brandstater
    3. Tebow

  45. Broncomania56 says:

Oh, By the way!!! Jamie Dukes is a putz!!!!

  46. royalbroncofan1 says:

Brandstater’s first appearance last preseason came in our second game vs. Seahawks and it was a baptism…(bad game). He also played with backup lineman who weren’t doing a very good job in pass blocking. He did well in relief of Orton vs. the Bears at Invesco. Took us down the field for two immediate scores, after Orton was ineffective and then was hurt. He looked good against Cardinals 3rd string but that was it for Brandstater. We saw him come out of the tunnel last year after the Cowboys game, as he stopped to give some autographs. My son was able to have him sign is Bronco cap. Seemed liked a nice kid was interactive with the kids as he signed autographs. He was not aloof in his demeanor unlike the QB now with the Bears. Brandstater is our tallest QB at 6’5″ and has a strong arm. Don’t know what going to happen with him as we have 4 QB’s and don’t believe we’ll carry 4 but Coach McD is unpredictable. He may be placed on PS and reactivated next depending on Orton, or could be traded. I’m sure the Patriots wouldn’t mind having two Tom’s in NE. RB Ryan Matthews drafted by the Chargers was his teammate at Fresno State.

  47. jacob33 says:

Broncomania56… Do u really think Josh is going to let the only guy who knows the playbook go??? Wow your a lil slow im 16 and i know that come on dont be that stupid!!! It will be…
    1. Orton
    2. Tebow
    3. Brandstater
    4. Quinn ( if hes lucky) ;)

  48. stevecan2 says:

Bringing in Quinn was a necessity at the time we brought him in. No doubt McDaniel’s and Xanders were going after Tebow the whole draft. We only picked Thomas because at that point it was known we still had a shot at Tebow. When there was a doubt they over reacted and grabbed him. He was our first priority. Seconded by looking at McCoy also as a ahhh damn we missed him(Tebow) We dropped from 11 because of the money and possibilities of still getting our #1.(Tebow) and later picks for less money. When players are taken it is all about the money, why would Bradford want to go to the Rams or any other first pick to the worst teams in the league. (i know common knowledge stuff about money but wanted to say it anyway.)

Brady Quinn was not traded by the Browns, he was thrown out. Holmgren sent an obvious message when trading away Anderson and Quinn. It was not, competition and may the best QB win, it was neither of these two are a starting NFL quarterback. Say what you want about Tebow’s ability to be an NFL quarterback but he has not had the chance to prove it one way or the other in the NFL. (but who’s the first Sophomore Heisman winner and two NCAA championships under the belt, while being told since HS you couldn’t be successful.) I am very excited to find out, hell listening to him for 5 minutes makes me want to attempt the Warner dream and see if I could make it. That is the TYPE of player every single locker room needs to have to be successful. Cancers like Cutler, Marshall, and Sheffler are not. I say cancer because of known bad attitudes, ethics, leadership qualities, etc, not based on playing capabilities.(or having a winning season since Senior year in HS)

Quinn will be backing up Orton this year and has to prove me, Holmgren and many others that he can be an NFL starting quarterback. He has had years to prove the ability, and so far shut down. And not being in the role isn’t the satisfying factor either, I dub thee Carson Palmer, Aaron Rogers, and Kevin Kolb. These three had franchises backing them 100% before they even were given the QB1 on the depth chart. Quinn, well he was traded for a full back. So I admit I may be wrong, but I have to be proved wrong first(in my view of Quinn as anything more than a solid QB2)

Is Orton a franchise quarterback? No, but he is a starting QB. Tebow will lie in wait and take over the reigns when he is ready. Hopefully all cylinders of our offense will be firing this year. Hell if Chicago made it to the show (SB) on the arm of Grossman, we will win that mess on the arm of Orton.

For the fourth time over a span of 5 months, I am predicting we win the Super Bowl this year.

  49. stevecan2 says:

Oh yeah, sorry Tom Brandstater but you just been hit with what I call the Jeff Lewis stick.

  50. trueonbfan says:

    Orton starter
    Quinn #2
    Tebow #3

    All 3 active every game.

Brandstater cut – no way McD makes the moves he did trading for Quinn and drafting Tebow without knowing that Brandstater does not have the tools McD wants in his QBs.

Both Orton and Quinn get new deals after this season keeping them in Denver for another 3-5yrs. With these 3 QBs they have young depth and guys that are all very capable of winning games in McD’s system. Our losses last year were not because of the QB play.

Our guys in the trenches (offense & defense) are what is going to make or break us. Both areas were addressed heavly so I expect a much better performance from those groups this year which equates into at least 3 more wins which puts us winning our division and in the playoffs. Clady getting hurt sucks but hopefully all goes well and we have him back by season opener (which I believe we will).

    BRONCOS TEAM OF THIS DECADE!!!
