Broncos Backfield Picks Up Pair of Awards

December 11th, 2009 - 12:19pm by Chris Gentilviso

After rushing for a combined 199 yards against the Chiefs in Week 13, Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter have each received a weekly award.

For an NFL high fourth time this season, Moreno has been named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. The Georgia product rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos’ 44-13 victory at Arrowhead Stadium. He is the only rookie to win the award four times this season, as Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez won it during Week 1 through Week 3.

With 113 rushing yards on 12 carries against the Chiefs, Buckhalter has been named FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week. The nine-year veteran is the first Bronco to win the award this season.

When asked how the two complement each other, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said each back has their own method to reach the edge of a defense.

“Buck’s maybe a little faster,” McDaniels said. “He’s got a great burst and is playing really well right now. Knowshon is a little bit of a slippery runner inside the tackles. A little bit more spin moves, those kind of moves.”

With those contrasting running styles in hand, McDaniels alluded to the biggest benefit the two provide — a fresh rotation that lasts for 60 minutes.

“Two definitely distinctively different running styles, and that’s a good thing when you can put those out there on the field and make the defense defend both,” McDaniels said.

INJURY UPDATE

The Broncos listed four players on Friday’s Week 14 Injury Report. A limited participant in Friday’s session, David Bruton (thigh) is questionable for Sunday’s game at Indianapolis. A trio of full participants on Friday — Josh Barrett (shoulder) , Brian Dawkins (ankle) and Kyle Orton (ankle) — are all listed as probable going into the matchup with the 12-0 Colts.

On the Colts side, there were three Friday changes. After missing practice on both Wednesday and Thursday, DE Robert Mathis (quad) was a full Friday participant and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

After not participating in Thursday’s session, Indianapolis WR Hank Baskett (personal reason) was a full participant on Friday and is probable to play on Sunday.

A limited participant in Thursday’s practice, Colts DT Daniel Muir (hamstring) was a full participant on Friday. He is questionable for Sunday’s game.

Here are some photos from the start of Friday’s practice.

  9. broncofanlvnm says:

Congrats on the awards guys! I think this is another week for the running game to explode! Indy is giving up about 111 yds per game on the ground and also well over 200 yds in the air. Our offense WILL score on these guys. Another interesting point is that Indy hasn’t faced any team with a top 10 defense other than the Ravens. Broncos are currently ranked #3! This is good news for our team! Broncos win 24-17.

  10. NxtYrNvrArrives says:

Wouldn’t that be something to not just beat the Colts but to beat them decidedly? I really do believe this team this year and I think we are probably the last team that can beat Indy and think we have a great chance. And these two backs are going to need to play just like they did last week in order to win. That is really my main prediction. Yes, the defense needs to keep Manning off his rhythm, but ultimately, if we can run the ball and run it well, we have an excellent chance of winning. This is really becoming exciting. No matter how far this team goes this year, what they are building is something we have not seen in a very long time.

  11. trigger73 says:

TB’s Correll and Knowshon are great. But, I also think that LaMont is very good, too. Also, Peyton and Spencer are great FB blockers.

  12. broncomvp24 says:

  16. DoomervilRocks92 says:

Congrats to Buck and Moreno. Moreno should be offensive rookie of the year, as well as rookie of the year.

    Baylin: I predict a 31-24 Broncos WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Chaoticblaze27 says:

im glad i voted now all we gotta do is vote for the yearly awards

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

Baylin put me down for 27-24 Broncos.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

DoomervilRocks92, you were in way early this week making a pick Broncos win 21-17, so that is your pick for the contest..

  20. baylinorcrush says:

BFE92, got you down 27-24 Bronco win. You guys are all so cool, having us win and all…

  21. tnalen66 says:

Most people have picked Harvin from MN as rookie of the year. He is on at 10-2 team that gets alot of attention cuz of Favre and AP. Moreno and the Broncos will have to finish SUPER strong inoder for him to get it.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

There is no doubt that whether we win or lose from now on will be based on whether we can run it or not. Last year was the worse possible scenario, with losing 7 RB’s and therefore completely abandoning the run late in the season, which was our downfall. This year, in my eye, is opposite, we have been switching to the running game the last two games and I believe that will bring out much better results. Keep running it from now on out, and we will come out winners, the battles in December and in the playoffs are won in the trenches, ask the Steelers who abandonned the run for the pass with big Ben this year, and they are screwed. We can go a long way if we can remember that the ground game is where it’s at late in the season, and we look great there with healthy Bucky, Moreno and Hillis…. Bring it on guys, dare you to stop us, whoever you may be.

  23. tanja says:

anybody noticed on the injury report, Mannings injury ?
    i nearly died laughing…
    *~–QB Peyton Manning (Glute)–~*
    his BUTT (muscle) is hurt…
i noticed, that most the games they won were close,
    if not even in overtime.
we’ve been consistently getting stronger, rebuilding on the
    1st 6 games.
thxs giving definately helped us getting back on the upswing of things.
    the Colts ARE not unstoppable,

AND WE WILL SEE TO THAT

    GO BRONCOS ! ! ! !

  24. FTR says:

The Stage is set> We are the underdogs going into Indy with most every expert picking a loss for us! Their undefeated season and home field advantage through the playoffs on the line. I think this will be the upset of the week. Just my gut feeling Bronco Country!

  25. tjnartw says:

Congrats to Moreno and Buckhalter, You guys are the ticket to making it to the playoffs. Of course we shouldn’t forget that awsome offensive line that keeps opening up those running lanes. Hopefully we can get some really big plays from the special teams and with this defense we should be able to make it into the playoffs and go deep. I believe that this team can win out and win the division.

Baylinor, put me down with Broncos-23,Colts 16!!!!!! and da Bears lose again. OH YEAH.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Thebroncoguy says:

its going to be a good one this sunday! Baylin put me down for Denver 34 Indy 31
The reason for a denver win is, the team is motivated as a team, out team revolves around the team. Unlike Indy whose team revolves around peyton. Our team is better then any one guy in the league!

    Go Broncos!

  27. Thebroncoguy says:

*our team revolves around the team haha

  28. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Let’s beat the Colts! GO BRONCOS!!!

  29. TheRoyalBeast says:

Way to go KnoMo and Bucky…voted my but off for you guys.

Gonna keep this breif. Like what im seeing in this team….I believed we could end the season six and 0 the way we started it even with a giant like IND in our way. When we were INDs whipping both they had both Harrion and Wayne…and we werent equipped to handle wayne on those short curls. Champ will most likely be on wayne but Goodman is playing good football. Our Pass D is great and Our QB rush even better. We have a solid ground game, and if we can get that going like we did last week against the colts…then all Orton will have to do is Manage the game for the most Part. Since week 1 I always believed we would take down the Colts….and here it is.

We continue to play as a team and we cant be stopped.

THE SEASON IS OURS FOR THE TAKING
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Guys, 26 picks so far, pretty good considering the tough game we’re up against. Today is the last chance to post your pick. Here is mine, we win it with the run with our three ground amigos, compliment it with the dink and dunk and confuse Manning into throwing more picks than he cares to. Broncos win 27-21.

  31. coachemup says:

This is it, this is the game I have been waiting for all year! This is our MUST WIN!!! not the San diego game like many were saying this is the one that will determine how far we will get in the playoffs. The Colts are looking ahead to a perfect season and the Broncos are looking to beat the colts and put pressure on the chargers.

Keys to this game are how the two gentleman in this blog perform. You know it, I know it and the colts know it! Colts have a very fast defense with bookends Freeney and Mathis much like the giants Ogunlia (forget the spelling) and Tuck. We need to run right at these guys as their sole objective is to get to the quarterback. If we can keep them off balance with our run game and put together some long drives with no turnovers, I like our chances if we keep #18 where he looks the best and thats on the bench. Also, Brandon Marshall ( I hope your reading this!) If you want to be one of the best recievers to play this game, (which I certainly believe is possible!) GO OUT AND PROVE IT!!!. When you get a touchdown, celebrate with your teammates who helped you get it, NOT THE COACH!

Defense needs tight coverage on the recievers as Peyton gets the ball out quick. If we can disguise our coverages late we can get some picks on Manning. Bailey needs to be on his toes covering Wayne because this is Mannings favorite reciever and he fears no one. If we can throw off his timing with tight coverage I like the matchup and look for Bailey to get a pick.

60+ minutes is what it will take with a very small margin for error. Broncos are playing their best football right now and they cannot let up at all. Chargers (peaked too early)are on a 7 game win streak that ends sunday against the Cowboys. Vikings beat the Bengals in the metrodome.
And the Broncos upset the Colts 28-24 putting the home team in contention for the second seed in the playoffs and a rematch in January.

I said it before, and I will say it again, the teams that get hot going into December are the ones that do the most damage in the playoffs. So far (time will tell) the Broncos and the Packers are two of those teams. I for one would love to see a rematch of Super Bowl XXXII.
Not to get ahead of myself just sayin Go Broncos……………..

    Coach

  32. Orange_Crusher says:

To Err or not to Err, that is the edge.

This game is one with few real advantages for the Broncos. If I had to give a margin to someone it would be Payton Manning. Fortunately I don’t root for the young ponies, I root for the Big Horses, the Wild Stallions, The Bronco Studs, the Orange Sires….

I believe that Coach McDaniels built the Broncos exactly for matching up against the Colts. Indy has been the nemesis that McD has faced over and over again with the Pats and It’s common knowledge for years that if you want to represent the AFC in the SB, you have to go through Payton Manning.

Soo..how do we win? **NO TURNOVERS!**

This game is about self discipline, to play Hard and Fast for 60 minutes without beating yourself is the goal here. The team that makes the least errors in this game will win. We cannot afford to turn the ball over even one time.

The Bronc O must play total ball security. Use the power run to set up safe passes and get the rock out very quickly…. (do your checkdowns faster Orton)! Everyone must hang on to the football!!!!

The Bronc D must not let Manning read their coverage. We need to be ultra-incognito. Have disguises and change them up throughout the game…..Poker Face Defense!!

Bring the Fire and Spirit that we have seen for the last two weeks and the Broncos could very well win this game!!!

    STALLIONS 28

    PONIES 24

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCO FIRE AND SPIRIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Orange_Crusher says:

    coach…

I posted my pick then went back and read yours….lol

    28-24… It’s BSP (Broncosensory Perception)

  34. baylinorcrush says:

coachemup, if we lose the division title to SD by one game or in a tie breaker, we’ll talk about whether the San Diego game at our house was a must win game or not, ok? LOL.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

If we win the division, I’ll eat crow, but if you don’t it’s only fair that you do the eating, LOL. Winning the division is the first goal in anybody’s season.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

    …if we don’t…

  37. baylinorcrush says:

The amazing thing about OC and coachemup picks, other than they are identical, is you guys don’t think we’ll score a single FG. I know what you are thinking, that we can’t afford to score FG’s against the Colts and win, but with how good Prater has been since Berger has been the holder, and indoors on top of it, I had to account for a couple FG’s in my pick. That will be an interesting part of the game, go for it on 4th, or kick the FG?

  38. jonah22 says:

last year when the steelers won the superbowl the boss at work declared it steelers week where you could where steelers gear all week. i hate the steelers and my boss is a huge steelers fan and i guess so is 50% of all the people that i work with which is weird since i live no where close to pittsburgh or the east. this is a big corporation where we always have to dress nice. anyways yesterday we had a meeting and after the meeting i said “when the broncos win the superbowl, i get to wear broncos gear all week, right?” and he said “absolutely!” WOOT!! i know i’m getting ahead of myself a little, but i think we can do it!! GO BRONCOS!!

  39. Orange_Crusher says:

Bay, there could be seven FG’s and one TD to get to 28………lol

Maybe I’m thinking Paxton, Prater and Berger will rule the day…?

  40. Orange_Crusher says:

    Bay,

Also, if the colts are at 24 and the Broncos reach 20 from 2TD’s and 2FG’s, then get one more TD for six to get ot 26, then McD might go for the two point conversion to reach 28 and force the colts to get a TD to win and not a FG to tie? It would be a gamble but it could happen.

  41. SC_Socnorb says:

baylin, I been watching picks every week and said I should do it. So here it is broncos win 34-21

  42. The JoEL says:

LOL @roya1fantasy We WiLL Bring the FLAMES of Torture to Manning!

  43. jonah22 says:

    broncos 31 colts 17

  44. bronco-blaze says:

What makes me mad is when they present thursday night football they say

“THE BATTLE OF 2 UNDEFEATED TEAMS!” saying colts will be undefeated and saints. That makes me so angry. I will laugh so hard though if we beat the colts and they continue to play that comercial.

  45. superbowlboundbroncos says:

    broncos win it 34-27

  46. 57Yellow T-Bird says:

Ok, I know this may be unrealistic, or a bit far fetched, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say Broncos 34-17. It’ll probably be much closer than that, but everyone else is guessing a lot closer, so I thought I’d take a wild guess.

I wonder, however, if Hillis will join Bucky and Moreno for a three-headed monster. Sounds very intriguing to me, what do you guys think?

  47. ShannyGone? says:

57Yellow T-Bird i dont care who runs the ball!!! just run it down tHEIR THROATTTTTTTS!!!!

    28-23 DENVER

  48. Greatness007 says:

    @ roya1fantasy

All you needed was a white beard and a staff. Added a THEY SHALL NOT PASS and a RUN YOU FOOLS. I would have thought you were Gandolf from Lord of the rings.

  49. coachemup says:

Orange crusher: Copycat lol……… actually I don’t mind sharing the spotlight if we can get the win. Baylin: My theory is “its not who you play but when you play them”. We had already beat the chargers on their turf (in a dominant fashion I may add!) and that was at the end of our 6-0 run. Then we went on a 4 game skid with our last loss to san diego in a humiliating fashion to put our record at 6-4. It’s very difficult to beat the same team 3 times in a season so if we were to face them again, EVEN as a wild card? I like our chances. The table can turn dramatically TODAY IF? (and there are lots of ifs) all the cards fall right. New England has been very IFFF’Y to say the least and we own them in the head to head battle. Cinncinatti has to play the Vikings in the metrodome (we own that tie breaker). San Diego has to play the Cowboys in Dallas yada, yada, yada.

Most important though is WE need to take care of business with the Colts today. If that happens the sky is the limit, and thats why I call todays game “OUR MUST WIN!!!”

  50. baylinorcrush says:

coachemup, we lost our first must win game, so let’s not lose our second today, but if we do, listening to your analogy in reverse (hard to win three against the same foe), we shouldn’t have too much trouble winning our next must win game (third one, hard to lose three must wins in a row, hahaha). LOL.

Until you’re faced with elimination, there always will be must win games, this is not the first one, nor the last one. We still need to win the division, we really need us and Dallas to step up big today. Wouldn’t it been so much easier if we had won that SD game, even if we’d lose today and they’d beat Dallas, we would still be leading the division by virtue of the tie breaker. Sorry, coach, you can coach me until your blue in the face about that SD game not being a must win game, I don’t buy it for a minute, but to each his own, no sense in looking back, we are where we’re at, and hopefully that’s still good enough to take the division.
