Broncos at Vikings Second Half Blog

September 2nd, 2010 - 7:33pm by Gabe Hiatt

HALFTIME The Broncos will receive the ball to start the second half.

Q3 15:00: Cassius Vaughn returns the kickoff for Denver 4 yards to the 26-yard line. Tim Tebow takes the snap and scrambles for 3-yards up the middle of the field, and on the next play Tebow throws to Bruce Hall for no gain. On third-and-7, Tebow can’t complete a pass to Matthew Willis, but the Vikings are called offsides and the down is repeated. This time Tebow finds Willis for a 15-yard gain and a Denver first down. Bruce Hall takes a handoff and runs 9 yards on the following first down. Minnesota takes their first time out of the half.

Q3 12:28: On second-and-2, Hall picks up the first down and picks up five more to the Minnesota 39. On the very next play, Tebow and Willis hook up again, this time for a 39-yard touchdown.

BRONCOS 14, VIKINGS 17

Q3 11:39 Tim Tebow has completed 10 consecutive passes. Ian Johnson is back to receive Prater’s kick, and takes it 22 yards up to the 29-yard line. Joe Webb comes in at quarterback for the Vikings and completes his first pass for 14 yards.

Q3 10:23: Darius Reynaud takes a handoff for no gain for the Vikings, setting up third-and-five from the 43-yard line. Webb shakes the Broncos defense and scrambles 41 yards upfield until Alphonso Smith brings him down. Reynaud runs left on a sweep and Cassius Vaughn makes the tackle after an 11-yard gain. The Vikings set up in a first-and-goal at the 6-yard line.

**INJURY UPDATE** Marquez Branson has a leg injury and is questionable to return.

Q3 7:11: After a 1-yard Reynaud run, Ian Johnson carries the ball for a 4-yard touchdown. Longwell converts the extra point attempt and puts the Vikings up 24-10.

BRONCOS 14, VIKINGS 24

Q3 7:09: Cassius Vaughn is back to receive the kickoff. and he busts out a 50-yard return to the 48-yard line.

Q3 6:55: On first down Tim Tebow pulls down the ball and tries to evade the rush, but Erin Henderson catches him for a 1-yard sack. Bruce Hall takes the handoff outside for no gain, setting up a third-and-11. Tebow takes a shotgun snap and scrambles, making one man miss and running up the field for a 14-yard gain and a Broncos first down.

Q3 4:53: Bruce Hall runs for two yards on the first down, and Tim Tebow fires a pass to Eric Decker on second down, but Decker can’t hang on and it’s ruled incomplete. On third-and-8 Alric Arnett can’t come down with a Tebow pass, and the Broncos elect to go for it on fourth down. Tebow and Arnett try to connect on a similar play, but the ball sails out of bounds.

Q3 4:12: The Vikings take over possession on their own 38-yard line. Webb hands off to Reynaud for 3-yard gain on first down, and the running back spins off a tackle for 2 more yards the next play. On third-and-5 Webb completes a pass to Javon Walker on a comeback route for 7 yards and a first down after Alphonso Smith wrestles him down. On the first down Ian Johnson takes the ball for a short gain, but the next play Webb throws a pick to Alphonso Smith, who runs the ball down to the 6-yard line.

Q3 1:32: Brady Quinn takes over the reigns from Tebow at quarterback. Quinn takes the snap from under center and hands off to Bruce Hall for no gain. Quinn completes a pass to Hall for 5 yards, setting up third-and-goal from the 2-yard line. Denver takes a time out, their first of the half.

Q3 0:23: The Vikings fans are on their feet cheering loudly as Bruce Hall gets stopped 1 yard short of the end zone. The third quarter ends with the Broncos forced into a fourth down 1 yard away from the goal line.

Q4 15:00: Denver is challenging the ruling that the previous play did not account for a touchdown. The ruling on the field stands and Denver is charged with their second timeout. Bruce Hall is stopped short of the touchdown, but there’s a flag on the play. Denver is called for holding and Minnesota declines and takes over possession.

Q4 14:52: Webb launches a deep pass for Javon Walker, but Smith shows strong coverage and the pass falls incomplete. On second down Webb is pressured by Worrell Williams and throws the ball away out of bounds. The Vikings set up in the shotgun and Webb’s pass sails over Freddie Brown’s head, bringing up fourth down.

Q4 14:43: Syd’Quan Thompson fields the punt for a 9-yard gain, and the receiving team is called for a holding penalty enforced after the play. Quinn completes a 21-yard pass to Decker on the first play of the possession. On the next play Quinn finds Decker for 6 yards, and on second down the two connect again for another 6 yards. The Broncos are called offsides and are pushed back 5 yards, but Quinn finds Decker for the fourth consecutive time and hits him on a 14-yard pass. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Minnesota cuts the distance to the goal in half, and Lance Ball takes a handoff up the right said and into the end zone. However, a Denver holding penalty negates the score and the Broncos are back to first-and-15. The Minnesota defense pressures Quinn and he throws the ball away. On second down, Quinn lofts a pass to Alric Arnett in the end zone. Denver declines an illegal contact penalty on Eric Frampton, and Matt Prater converts the extra point, cutting the deficit to 24-21.

BRONCOS 21, VIKINGS 24

Q4 12:01: Matt Prater boots the kickoff for a touchback. Ian Johnson totes the ball 4 yards on first down, and takes a draw play up the middle for 3 on second down. On third-and-3, Johnson catches a short pass from Webb and turns it into 9-yard gain after Cassius Vaughn pushes him out of bounds. On the next play, Javon Walker gets open past Alphonso Smith and catches a Joe Webb pass for a 63-yard touchdown. Longwell makes the extra point, putting the Vikings up by 10.

BRONCOS 21, VIKINGS 31

Q4 10:07 Cassius Vaughn takes out the kickoff to the 21-yard line, but Denver is called for holding and they start the drive from the 11. Quinn drops back and finds Decker for a 9-yard completion. On second down Bruce Hall barrels up the middle for 2 yards and a first down.

Q4 9:00: Quinn’s first down throw is deflected and falls incomplete. On the next play Quinn hits Decker, who streaks up the middle for an 18-yard gain. Bruce Hall turns up field and runs 11 yards after receiving a screen pass from Quinn, and the back carries again for 4 yards on the subsequent play. Tyrell Johnson collapses on Quinn for the sack on second down, setting up 3rd-and-11. Riar Geer hauls in a catch from Quinn for 6-yards, and the Broncos are going for it on fourth down. Quinn sets up in the shotgun and converts the first down with the help of Eric Decker, who reeled in a catch right at the marker and ran a step past it for 7 yards.

Q4 4:56: Brady Quinn escapes the pressure on first down and scrambles to his right for 6 yards. On second down his pass falls incomplete, and on third down he takes a shotgun snap and has the ball batted away as he releases it. Matt Prater hits a 49-yard field goal and puts his team 7 points away from the Vikings.

BRONCOS 24, VIKINGS 31

Q4 4:44: Prater kicks off deep to Reynaud, and the ball flies out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. Joe Webb escapes a sack by Kevin Alexander, makes another defender miss, and scampers away for 9 yards. Ian Johnson carries the ball 5 yards for a Minnesota first down. On the first down, Baraka Atkins takes down Johnson in the backfield for a 2-yard loss. Webb completes a pass to a kneeling Javon Walker to set up 3rd-and-5, and the Broncos take their final timeout of the game.

Q4 2:27: Webb’s pass falls incomplete, but there’s a flag on the play. Alphonso Smith is called for an illegal contact penalty, and the Broncos cede an automatic first down. Smith recovers a Reynaud fumble and gives the Broncos possession with 2:11 left on the clock.

Q4 2:11: Quinn drops back and fires a 13-yard pass to Eric Decker, bringing up the two-minute warning.

Q4 2:00: The Broncos take the ball on the 32-yard line. Quinn find Hall with a 13-yard completion, and he hurries to the line and connects with Alric Arnett for a 6-yard gain. On second down Quinn’s pass is low and incomplete, bringing up third-and-4 from the 12-yard line. Minnesota sends multiple blitzers and Quinn is forced to throw the ball away. On fourth down Quinn throws a pass into the hands of Riar Geer, but he can’t hang on to it and Denver loses possession.

Q4 0:50: Minnesota calls a timeout, and Webb kneels the ball twice in a row to run out the clock and end the game.

FINAL SCORE: BRONCOS 24, VIKINGS 31
