Broncos at Vikings: Key Plays

December 4th, 2011 - 10:56pm by Stuart Zaas

Fourth-and-9 from the Minnesota 48 (12:55, 1st quarter): Chris Kluwe unleashed a 51-yard punt that stopped dead inside the Broncos 1-yard line, where it was downed by Eric Frampton. On the next play, defensive end Jared Allen tackled running back Willis McGahee in the end zone for a safety to put the Vikings ahead 2-0.

Third-and-8 from the Denver 8 (8:16, 1st quarter): Safety Brian Dawkins blitzed and strip-sacked quarterback Christian Ponder. Defensive end Jason Hunter pounced on the loose ball and returned it to midfield.

Second-and-2 from the Denver 28 (0:47, 2nd quarter): Allen made another big play for the Vikings, sacking Tim Tebow and forcing a fumble. The play was reviewed, but upheld and set Minnesota up in scoring position at the end of the half. The Vikings capitalized, tacking on a field goal as time expired to take a 15-7 lead at the half.

Vikings kickoff from the Minnesota 35 (3:12, 3rd quarter):
Wide receiver Quan Cosby returned Ryan Longwell’s kickoff 63 yards to set the Broncos up inside Vickings territory to start their possession. Cosby fielded the kick four yards deep in the end zone and brought it out to the Minnesota 41 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, the Broncos took advantage of the field position when Tebow connected with Thomas on a 41-yard scoring strike, the second touchdown connection of the day for the duo.

First-and-10 from the Denver 34 (9:35, 4th quarter):
On the first play of the Broncos’ drive, Tebow found Thomas open for a 42-yard completion. On the next play, McGahee took a carry 24 yards for a touchdown. Tebow ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to tie the game at 29 with 9:01 to play in the game.

First-and-10 from the Denver 32 (2:51, 4th quarter):
Tebow and Thomas connected on another key play late in the fourth quarter when Tebow found Thomas for a gain of 40 yards. The big gain took the Broncos to the Vikings 28 and into Matt Prater’s field goal range. Four plays later, Prater converted a 46-yard field goal to tie the game at 32 with 1:33 to play in the game.

First-and-10 from the Minnesota 20 (1:33, 4th quarter):
With the Vikings looking to drive down the field for the game-winning score, cornerback Andre’ Goodman made sure they didn’t get very far. On the Vikings’ first play from scrimmage following Prater’s game-tying field goal, Goodman intercepted the pass from Christian Ponder and returned it 20 yards to the Minnesota 15. Lance Ball picked up another 12 yards on the ground while running down the clock and then Tebow repositioned the ball to the left hash for Prater. For the third time this season, Prater delivered a walk-off game-winning kick — this time a 23-yarder as time expired.

    Nice… Real nice…

I second that motion on Decker’s blocking. He is a beast, and definitely shows his unselfishness. Tim’s passion has spread to the rest of the team. Still doesn’t get the credit he deserves, but the lack of it motivates him day in and day out.

I think Doom is enough pressure for Hanie. I’d like to see a healthy Miller come out and get 4 sacks on Brady.

I’d love to be inside Belichick’s head right now. I’d bet he’s not thinking a whole lot about WAS…Brady can handle that one. He’s got Tebow on his mind. LOL

Question remains: How long will it take for McCoy/Fox to figure out what Belichick is doing?

Never thought this CHI game was going to end up looking so winnable.

Ahahahaha, that was the best article EVER … well maybe not the best but had me rolling. Exactly what ive been saying. Only thing he left out was “score more than 17 points and u beat them” but he addressed that when he talked about the Minn game. I like the response “Shut up” ahahahahaha … no better comeback. And I hope the scenario plays out just like that because no matter what the kid will be hated on until he wins a superbowl … whether thats possible is still yet to be determined but I have a feeling even if he did they would still have an excuse.

After the superbowl … populations of Haterus Tebowis should be: Just one, CarnageBronco

LMAO … just jokes Carnage. lol. But those Tebowis Haterus sure sounded like u buddy lol.

    TRB

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, that’s a way better ending than with Rodgers, LOL.

  6. millerqbkiller says:

well its not dumb to think we could be in a superbowl soon it took fox 2 years to turn a 4-12 panthers team into a superbowl team although they didnt win he got them there with good run game good defense and a great qb i see denver having a similar success soon.

  7. Bronco_Turtle says:

Dilfer just picked the Raiders to Win the AFC WEST… just now on NFL Live…. and I quote “I’m starting to doubt myself on this one but I’m sticking with the Raiders…Blah…etc…”

    Mouth Prepare for foot…

  8. millerqbkiller says:

1 saw that but tim picked the broncos like a smart guy would trent will regret saying that.

  9. oldsouthstander says:

A lot of bloggers are saying that with TT performing the way he is that there is no need for the Broncos to draft a QB in the 2012 draft. This thinking is totally wrong. If TT (Extremely likely) is the starting QB next season it is absolutely necessary to draft a QB who is similar to TT. NOT to compete with him, but because he’ll be a better plan B if TT ever goes down than a “normal: QB. Can you imagine any QB currently in the NFL who can run an offense the way TT does? Not even Vick, Young or McNabb.
Ergo, drafting a TT style QB is essential.
If TT is not the Broncos starting QB for 2012 (Almost certtainly not going to happen.), it’s esential the the Broncos draft the best conventional QB they can and hope he’s our future QB. Can anybody see any current QBs that might be available via free agency next year as THE QB of the Broncos future? NO WAY!!
Ergo (showing off my 4 year of Latin), drarfting the best “normal” QB is essential.

And mooch before sundays games said that Raiders were teh best team in the AFC … not west … entire AFC … analysts are know nothing. They know just as much as we do. They only get more cred cuz hey have played the game at that level. But they are also as biased as the next guy. Only Irvin picked us as the best in the AFC before sundays victory and With a depleted Bears team, one dimentional Patriots team with a weak defense, A happless Bills team without fred jackson that doesnt know whether its coming or going, and a chiefs team that seems to have worse luck than the bad luck bears … We should coast straight into the playoffs … SHOULD … but doesn’t always go that way … can’t underestimate your opponents. TRB

  11. millerqbkiller says:

we should win these last four games the bears are screwed and the pats almost lost to dan orlasky and the 0-12 colts. the bills suck and are going south. and the chiefs i dont need to talk about why we will win that one.

  12. S.D.Bronco30 says:

I like your last sentenance TRB and that you said SHOULD, we CAN NOT coast. It is too easy to get beat by a bad team if you decide to coast. I think KC at home will be a tuff game just b/c they are a division rival and will want to make things miserable for us and make a statement.

  13. savinghyrule says:

I think we’ll lose one more game and finish 10-6. I can’t pick which one because this year is totally unpredictable.

  14. millerqbkiller says:

well i believe in our team that they are not taking anyone lightly and will play there a$$ off to win all 4 games. will they do it though we will have to wait and see but i believe 11-5 is our record

  15. Yovi21 says:

No offense to goody, but why is he in the poll on the home page for player of the game? He almost single handedly lost that game for us..had it not been for the candy pick Ponder threw to him he wouldn’t have done anything….does anyone else feel the same?

  16. S.D.Bronco30 says:

I agree, I don’t think they will take anyone lightly either. I don’t think Tebow has it in him to do that. His drive to win is way to strong! And Von Miller is to determined to destroy the qb on every play!

  17. millerqbkiller says:

our teams identity is to keep trucking till the final play of the game and we will keep truckin till the season comes to an end. there is no quit in this team not an ounce of it.

  18. sndvl says:

What’s this I hear about Brett Favre saying he’d ‘listen’ if the Bears called…

  19. millerqbkiller says:

favre is just trying to get his name in the news i dont think he could really learn mike martzs offense in such short time to help them.

  20. sndvl says:

I certainly hope the team does not look past this Bears squad. They are fighting for their playoff lives. Sure, injuries have sidelined their offensive stars (I use the word offensive loosely), but the have a great D. Effectively holding KC to 3 points and a fluke Hail Mary that was answered. Not to mention, a certain KR/PR that can change a game by himself.
I’m not a fan of kicking away from Hester, but I trust Fox will make that tough decision, the right decision.
Plus, living in the Chicagoland area, nothing will give me greater pleasure than to bask in a Broncos win, as opposed to the ribbing I’d take if it goes the other way with a Fortler less Bears.

We don’t have anything wrapped up yet. No division title or playoff berth. And with 4 games left, each one holds significant importance. I do like the fact 3 of the 4 are home games, so we should have a slight advantage there. Reality is, we are in a logjam AFC West (depending on tonight’s outcome).
Take this one game at a time and who knows, we all may get that new Bike, (The 2005 model seems sooo old now) on Christmas Eve…

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  21. Broncfalls says:

As I stated prior to the Minnesota game, the passing attack would rear it’s ugly head. NOW……I think the Denver Broncos just poured gasoline on an already burning blaze!

Do you really wanna play the “Make him pass to beat us” card?

    I hope you do!

Now I know this was a Minnesota secondary that had a depleated backfield, but he made the plays! The scramble, stiff arm, throw, touchdown play? Seriously?

The planning of how to beat the Denver Broncos just got really, really confusing! How would you like to prepare for this?

All the Minnesota game was show the other 31 teams and ultimately the next 4 Denver opponents that if you think that Tim can’t beat you by throwing you might want to game plan some more!

I just believe this got really interesting! Fox/McCoy just showed the NFL that they are going to TEST assignment football to it’s fullest! By adding in the passing attack and comfortability for Tim, they are going to make opposing defenses “think” and as everyone knows, when you start thinking instead of playing…bad things will happen!

    Brilliant Move!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

I just love the fact that Fox put Tebow in,just to see what we had in the guy,now we are fighting it out for a playoff run,and we are winning,I for one am tickled pink!!!!!!!!!

    Tebow Train…keep steam rollin’……Chugga Chugga….Choo Choo!!!!

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

BTW…..McCoy is impressing the Hell outta me!!!

  24. daddybronc says:

BFE – McCoy is too slow at making the needed adjustments. The Broncos are going to need to be able to make adjustments on the fly – from the sidelines.

  25. Orange_Crusher says:

It seems like everytime I call a player or coach out on the blog they turn around and proove me wrong! Fox, McGahee, McCoy, DMT…

My methods are working like clockwork!!! hahaha

The best way to get somebody to do something is to tell them that they can’t…..

    ILMSDB!!!!

  26. HardHitting27 says:

Agreed, daddy, McCoy will need to be able to make the adjustments on the fly.
While the O has looked good lately, it’s only in the second half of games and primarily in the 4th quarter.

This needs to change. Even #15 stated it and has stated it, we need to get off to faster starts. I think that starts with mixing up the playcalling early.

Stop with the 1st down run or run option 2nd down run or play action run and 3rd down pass or option. at least that’s how most of the series seem to go….. too predictable.

  27. WieminCA says:

Punter Colquitt’s interesting comment – he said the players keep going at the end because they Tebow will, and is, and they’d hate like heck to give up and have him still out there trying with all he’s got … makes a lot of sense … it takes the WHOLE team to not give up to do what the Broncos have done these past 7 weeks … plus – I’m sure older guys like Dawkins and Bailey are there to instill in the younger players the desire and knowledge that it’s really possible … Colquitt also said that the whole team knew in the beginning that they could do it, not that they would, but that they had the talent to do it, and so they’re not really surprised now, just satisfied …

  28. WieminCA says:

And I must say – from his last draft, McD has given the Broncos a bright future … I really hate to give him kudos, but it is what it is …

  29. WieminCA says:

I mean – RG, C, WR, WR, and QB – that’s 5 out of 11 offensive “starters”, in their 2nd year, w/o a training camp in that 2nd year … give a lot of credit to Fox and his staff, but McD got them here … too bad he was such a sh** …

  30. WieminCA says:

    I mean – LG …

  31. TfanT says:

Love the Broncos, love Tim, but was disappointed that whoever edits the Press Conference videos for the website cut Tim’s usual beginning and ending: thanking the Lord, then saying, “God bless.” I don’t appreciate the digression into political correctness. Let Tim be who he is – a committed Christian – and stop editing his words. Otherwise, it’s religious discrimination.

  32. daddybronc says:

LOL – T fan – Tim is going to see that and wait till his 3rd sentence to thank God.

  33. TfanT says:

Re: Tim’s press conference. Just give us the whole thing, from the beginning all the way to the end. No edits. Thanks!

  34. Londonbronco30 says:

Hi Bay. You were right on in you previous post. I could not be more chuffed that my season prediction was wrong :-)
It was of course made based on Orton as QB and given his first 5 games it is quite possible, that I could have been sitting here upset, that he would only have won 2 or at most 3 games at this point in the season. So in more ways than one it is GOOD to be wrong. For years now the only two teams in sports that I follow have been crap. Now the broncos are on a 5 game winning streak and Tottenham Spurs have 10w and a draw in last 11 games – what a turnaround in fortunes. Long may it last (hopefully at least a decade, hope im not being too greedy here?)

  35. BeastFromEast92 says:

db-McCoy is learning just as Tebow is,he will get better as time goes by,just as Tebow will, imo!

  36. daddybronc says:

I agree BFE – but just like Tebow needs some faster reads based on experience – so does McCoy. (Just worried about the PATS game – win that one and the Broncos are going to start getting some real attention…on second thought – nope- forget it – they’ll say the Pats were just cruisin. Tebow will have rings and they will still be calling it a fluke.)

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

There will always be nay sayers no matter how good Tebow does, but he is shutting them up one at a time, lol.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

oldsouth, I got the answer for you, RG3, as in Robert Griffin III, there is no one who even comes close to resemble Tebow as he does, and I agree 100% we need to draft us a big time back up to Tebow if we are gonna make him our starting QB. .
