Broncos at Titans: Second Half Blog

September 25th, 2011 - 12:40pm by Gray Caldwell

KICKOFF: The Titans deferred after winning the opening coin toss, and will receive to start the second half.

Q3 15:00: Marc Mariani raises his hands to signal ‘It’s good’ as Matt Prater’s kickoff sails through the uprights for a touchback. The Titans take over at their own 20-yard line, and first down brings a carry by Johnson, who is stuffed at the line. He officially picks up a yard. On second down, it’s another carry by Johnson, and Ayers takes him down after another yard. That makes it third-and-8, and Matt Hasselbeck scrambles around in the backfield before hitting Damian Williams for a 19-yard gain and a first down at the 41-yard line.

Q3 13:06: On first down, Hasselbeck hits his fullback Quinn Johnson for a 9-yard gain before he’s taken down by Wesley Woodyard. Johnson picks up the necessary yard for a first down on the next play. With the ball now in Denver territory on the 49, Hasselbeck hits Washington for a 7-yard gain. Second down brings an incomplete pass as Hasselbeck is hit from a blitz, and it’s now third-and-4 at the 43-yard line. Hasselbeck is in the shotgun and he finds a receiver right at the sticks, and apparently that will move the chains.

Q3 10:20: On first down, Hasselbeck tries to hit Johnson up the middle of the field but it’s incomplete. Second down brings a large group of Broncos into the backfield to stuff Javon Ringer at the line. Now third-and-10, Hasselbeck lines up in the shotgun. He takes the snap and tries to hit Lavelle Hawkins, but Jonathan Wilhite is there for the breakup. Brett Kern is in to punt, and Quan Cosby is deep to receive. Cosby calls for a fair catch at the 20-yard line after the 19-yard punt.

Q3 9:07: On first down, Kyle Orton quickly hits Eric Decker for another first down at the 31-yard line. The ensuing play is a 1-yard run by Willis McGahee. On second down, Orton steps up in the pocket and hits Daniel Fells for another first down. McGahee takes another carry on the next play, picking up 5 yards. Orton calls a timeout, Denver’s first of the second half, before the second-down play.

Q3 7:03: After the break, McGahee picks up a yard on second down. Now third-and-4, Orton breaks the huddle in the shotgun. The crowd is getting loud as Orton hits Decker on a bubble screen. The receiver picked up just enough for the first down in Tennessee territory at the 49-yard line.

Q3 6:12: On first down, Orton sidesteps a big blitz and avoids a sack before finding McGahee for a pickup of a yard. On second down, Lance Ball bounces a carry outside for a pickup of 7, setting up third-and-2. Orton hits Decker for a first down on the sideline at the 34-yard line.

Q3 4:32: On first down, Orton hits Decker for a quick 5-yard gain, and a facemask penalty tacks on 15 more yards to the 14-yard line, where the Broncos have a first-and-10. Orton hits Spencer Larsen for a 7-yard gain on first down.

Q3 3:03: After a run for no gain, Orton throws toward Larsen, who makes a great, diving, shoestring catch for the first down inside the 5. Now first-and-goal at the 4-yard line, Orton fakes a handoff before firing incomplete toward Decker. Second down brings a run for a loss of a yard, and it’s third-and-goal at the 5-yard line. Orton steps up in the pocket and fires a hard pass to McGahee in the end zone, and the running back hauls it in for a touchdown. Prater’s extra point is good, and the Broncos retake the lead.

BRONCOS 14, TITANS 10

Q3 1:17: On the first play of Tennessee’s drive, Von Miller sprints into the backfield and slaps the ball away from Hasselbeck, causing a fumble on the sack, and the Broncos recover. They take over at the 13-yard line.

Q3 0:35: After a 1-yard run by McGahee, the back takes it again and picks up another 5 yards to set up third-and-4 as the third quarter comes to a close.

Q4 15:00: On third-and-4 at the 7-yard line, Orton lines up in the shotgun. A Tennessee defensive lineman sprints into the backfield before the ball was snapped. Encroachment, but instead of 5 yards, it’s a half-the-distance-to-the-goal penalty, so the Broncos still face third down — third-and-1 at the 4-yard line. There’s flags on the play again, and once again it’s encroachment, so now it’s a first down. First-and-goal at the 2-yard line.

Q4 14:57: Orton’s pass is incomplete on first down. On second-and-goal, McGahee is stopped at the line of scrimmage, bringing up third-and-goal at the 2. The crowd is getting loud as Orton hands off to McGahee, who fights off a tackle before being taken down just short of the goal line. It’s fourth-and-goal at the 1, and the Broncos call a timeout, their second of the half.

Q4 13:34: After talking it over, the Broncos will go for it on fourth down. The defense is calling for the crowd to get loud, and McGahee is stopped for no gain. Tennessee takes over on its own 1-yard line on a turnover on downs.

Q4 13:28: Chris Johnson picks up a yard on first down, then Hasselbeck finds Washington with a quick pass, and the receiver reaches out for the first down at the 12-yard line. On the ensuing play, Johnson catches a pass out of the backfield for 3 yards, and the Broncos are called for a facemask, giving the Titans a first down at the 30. On first down with room to work, Johnson takes a carry for a yard. Hasselbeck proceeds to throw two incomplete passes, and the Titans are forced to punt. Brett Kern kicks to the waiting Quan Cosby, and Cosby is taken down at the 26-yard line, where the Broncos take over.

Q4 10:40: On first down, McGahee gains 3 yards on a run. Second-and-7 at the 29-yard line brings a quick pass from Orton to Virgil Green, and the rookie tight end picks up the first down. On the ensuing first down, Orton hits Lloyd, and the receiver is taken down after a gain of a yard. On second down, Orton’s pass is tipped at the line and falls incomplete. That brings up third-and-9 at the 37-yard line, and Orton hits Lance Ball, but the back is short of the first down after picking up 7 yards. Colquitt is in to punt to the waiting Mariani. Chris Harris hits the receiver immediately and takes him down at the 10-yard line. The Titans are called for holding, as well, pushing the ball back to the 5-yard line.

Q4 7:54: On first down Hasselbeck completes to Quinn Johnson for 8 yards. Hasselbeck’s second down pass for Williams is incomplete. Ringer hauls in a screen pass on third down and gets just enough for the first down.

Q4 6:40: Hasselbeck hits Craig Stevens deep over the middle on first down and the tight end picks up 58 yards. With first-and-10 from the Denver 25, Johnson runs up the middle for 8 yards. Hasselbeck then hits Washington for a first down at the 4-yard line. On first-and-goal, Hasselbeck hits Daniel Graham for a touchdown off of play-action. Bironas knocks in the extra point.

TITANS 17, BRONCOS 14

Q4 4:24: Denver starts at the 20. On first down, McGahee picks up 10 yards. Orton’s first down pass on the next play is incomplete intended for Decker and McGahee runs 2 yards on second down. On third down, Orton hits Decker, who lunges for first down yardage.

Q4 2:00: Orton hits Brandon Lloyd for a 20-yard gain on first down and the clock runs to the 2 minute warning. Denver has the ball on the Tennessee 38-yard line with one timeout left.

Q4 1:39: On first down, Orton scrambles away from pressure and runs out of bounds after a loss of one. On second-and-11 throws incomplete short to Matt Willis. On third down, Orton’s pass is deflected into the air and intercepted by Will Witherspoon. Tennessee takes over at their own 36-yard line.

Q4 1:27: Ringer runs for short yardage on first down and a flag is thrown for illegal formation, making it 1st-and-15. Ringer then runs up the middle for 3 yards on the next play and Denver calls its final timeout.

Q4 1:25: On second down after the timeout, Rahim Moore stops Ringer in the backfield for a loss of 2 yards. Tennessee calls a timeout with 41 seconds remaining. Hasselbeck then takes a knee and the clock runs out to end the game.

Final Score: TITANS 17, BRONCOS 14

100% agree with using Tebow on that last goal line package. Fox is a very conservative coach and apparently is not comfortable mixing it up.

Then again, Orton did get 2 tds today in his first 2 trips in the redzone. He’s at least making strides in that respect.

  2. BeastFromEast92 says:

Oh he got enough this year to retire!!!!!!

  3. dnarizona says:

    I agree brazenwood

  4. Dr. Doom says:

Also I just wanted to throw out there I will lobby as hard as a fan can for fox elastic and xanders to be fired if we draft luck or landry Jones without giving tebow at least 8 games as a starter…thoughts anybody???

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Someone is going to come up with the definition of traitor, haha.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

That would be mainly on Elway though.

  7. Atwater4HOF says:

I know its hard to find optimism after a tough loss but seriously guys our run D was AMAZING today.

Yes week 1 we got lit up by McFadden but he busted a couple of huge runs and as we saw today, is proving that he is a top 5 back this season after he carved up the Jets D.

These last 2 weeks have been great and I’m very happy with our improvements so far from week to week in that area.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Run D is much improved, really like Bunkley.

  9. Atwater4HOF says:

Luck is arguably the highest rated prospect since John Elway. If we have a chance on him and pass him up then I think everyone should be fired lol. Just my opinion though

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Last year I blamed McD for the lousy play calling, this year it’s McCoy,seems pretty much the same to me,I can’t believe we didn’t even try any long passes,Hell we got Spiderman #84,who catches everything,Finnegin ain’t that good, and call some toss sweeps or something, power running up the gut ain’t working for us!

  11. since1972 says:

Should have took the 3 points for sure seems the broncos hardly ever get the ball in the endzone why would this time be any different. You okay Baylinor from your comments I don’t think I’ve ever heard you being so upset. Hang in there because I’m thinking it only gets worse from here on

  12. Atwater4HOF says:

Hopefully with a healthy doom, our pass rush will be able to bail out our secondary next week. If not Rodgers is going to have a field day on us.

  13. Lord of the Broncos says:

As Luck goes, can he run, can he scramble, can he hold on to the damn ball, can he throw, can he lead, can he win, if so, give up Orton, the OC and Elway’s smile, just get us a WINNING QB…………………..

  14. dnarizona says:

I love the play of our team I just think Orton is tanking the team with his new anti neck beard.

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

Bunkley did play very good today!!

Woodyard made a lot of tackles, only after he got torched in coverage tho!

Miller is the real deal, too bad Doom was out!!!

First time I ever thought McBean played good, but he stopped the run!!

  16. Atwater4HOF says:

    BFE-

Agreed, good teams can stretch the field. Not even attempting shots down the field allows their secondary to creep up and sit on our short routes.

    Packers with Jennings
    Steelers with Wallace
Ravens with T. Smith apparently lol
    Eagles with Jackson
    etc.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, I get fed up when we work hard to pull a win and a coach’s decision makes it that much harder to do so, it’s disappointing to me and I’m sure to a lot of players too, we’re not that good, let’s take the points when they are given to us, specially when it puts us up by 7 late in the game, and so what if we end up losing because they score 10 after that, at least we would lose to them beating us rather than helping beat ourselves, that’s what bums me out, but I’m pretty much over it, bet you Fox will never listen to Orton again.

  18. Atwater4HOF says:

    Luck can run:

    Luck can hit:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6sfYL-jHOM

Can’t decide which play I enjoy more lol

  19. BeastFromEast92 says:

Orton with LLoyd worked good last year!
    why not this year?

  20. Atwater4HOF says:

Apparently posting youtube links requires comment moderation?

Oops, my bad. Just trying to show the awesome videos of Andrew Luck lol

I’m not sure why we aren’t airing it out more down field. Llyod is such a stud in that department. Maybe he wasn’t fully healthy today? Who knows

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

Well at least we got 2 TDs outta 3 redzone drives!
Too bad the 3rd one beat us,or Orton beat us,take your pick!!!

    I bet most pick Orton!

  22. dnarizona says:

Last year all I heard from the sports world is tebow cant make it in the NFL only thowing 50 %. Well kyle orton is completeing 54% this year and I dont hear any sports people saying the same for him.

  23. Lord of the Broncos says:

Because Orton doesn’t know how to look off one receiver, for another. So all the other teams just defend Lloyd and wait for the freebies..

  24. baylinorcrush says:

What about this, Orton beat us and Fox let him. Everyone is happy then, LOL.

  25. O&BinCostaRica says:

Because Orton stinks! And he needs to be benched. How many plays made you go, wow, nice throw? ONE? that’s it. The rest ANY other QB could pull off.

    Bench Orton
    Bench Orton
    Bench Orton

    PLEASE!

  26. timmah says:

I am going to say this if our run game was going well and the offensive line was opening up holes all game go for the endzone by running but it wasn’t so don’t think the holes will be there for a very important play… bad call. As for the orton interception he should have ran the ball got a couple of yards and if a first down great but if not kick the field goal and go into overtime. This one is on orton and the coaching staff for not saying lets go safe and just tie the game with one of the best long distance kickers in the game and go that route. Orton is not playing well at all. My reasoning is because he just isn’t that good. But as a fan I am willing to put up with this losing hoping he is gone next year. I just want the qq to be gone next year. I say trade moreno for a 3rd rounder and get a rb and cb and a dt mainly a dt. This season isn’t over yet but it is looking that way. But maybe somehow the broncos pull a couple of upsets and they start winning.

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

Elway’s career numbers are around 55% I think.

  28. dnarizona says:

    i agree lord of broncos

  29. Orange_Crusher says:

Man, Cutler got raped by the Packers today…. That was an ugly game..

Cutler has some feet and moxie in the heat of battle and he got skewered like shrimp and pineapple on the barbie….

Green Bay will eat Orton sandwiches for breakfast lunch and dinner next Sunday….

The truth is that Fox couldn’t even call the plays if he wanted to, he doesn’t know McDaniels terminology, philosophy or much about this offense. When he says that he’s letting McCoy run the offense, he really means it.

Fox is doing okay with the D but we are using only what we stole from Josh to get by on offense…. McCoy is in control of it all on O.

Of course Fox can say to go for it or not on 4th-1, but I wonder if Fox called the run up the gut or if McCoy did? Then Fox said something like, “we have to be able to make those plays to win games”. That sounds just like what McD used to use as his excuse to run up the gut over and over to no avail…

We need Fox to grow a pair and put Studesville in command of this offense! He knows all the terminology, he’s more creative than McCoy, he has balls!… It only took him one game to put Orton on the bench…. We came alive and had fun for three games and it felt good.. I feel like Josh is telling McCoy what to do from his cell phone… lol

  30. BeastFromEast92 says:

    bay…love your 7:47 post…perfect bro!

  31. sndvl says:

Not the last Zhaoyunfan. Apparently hes got the support of Fox and Elway still.
When your “offensive” line can’t push two yards forward on three straight plays…
When your head coach makes a boneheaded decision at the 1 yard line…
When your OCoord dials up something you’d expect out of a former (recent) HC…
Sure Orton made some mistakes today. I’m not gonna pin it all on him this week. Not like the Monday night opener…

  32. BeastFromEast92 says:

    OC…I heard that!!!!!!

  33. dnarizona says:

Yea but kyle orton has better stats then elway as a career and could probably out practice him if elway were a rookie now. Not mention that fox would be starting orton over elway because it.

  34. Atwater4HOF says:

I like the Studesville for offensive coordinator suggestion. He was very creative and aggressive. We have the aggressiveness on D with Dennis Allen, it’d be nice to have that on both sides of the ball

  35. Lord of the Broncos says:

I vote for anyone for OC that doesn’t have a Mc in their last name…..

    just saying..

  36. baylinorcrush says:

BFE, Elway’s regular season career % is 56.9, his best year was 1993 with 63.2 and the worse one his first year with 47.5

  37. strandoftds says:

I`m going to give our D some credit, they are progressing and getting better, and thats without Doom and Champ.

  38. dnarizona says:

You cant judge qb on stats. If you did plummer would be running the broncos because he complited 70% of his passes and has the best 2 year record with the broncos

  39. O&BinCostaRica says:

Coach Fox looks and sounds completely clueless in his post game interview. Pretty unsettling to me. But I still have high hopes for him. C’mon Fox. You need better QB play to win.

  40. strandoftds says:

Plummer had taken us to the AFC championship game. Missed it by that much!!

  41. strandoftds says:

Lets just face it, EFX wants Andrew Luck in the 2012 draft, so why play Tim Tebow.

  42. dnarizona says:

plaummer that year took us to a 13-3 record far cry from being there again with horton playing

  43. baylinorcrush says:

Actually the following Bronco QBs all had higher career % record than Plummer:

    .626 Hugh Millen
    .625 Cutler
    .622 Griese
    .605 Orton
    .600 Frerotte and Bubby Brister
    .591 Plummer

  44. dnarizona says:

I will laugh if anderw luck ends up being the next ryan leaf or better yet jeff george.

  45. zhaoyunfan says:

afc championship hurt still remember the tears rolling of anger at not being able to stop anyone on third down dang bad memories

  46. zhaoyunfan says:

man i hated griese more than i dislike orton lol

  47. zhaoyunfan says:

    steelers d looking old :P

  48. timmah says:

if we get a new qb I want landry jones from ou if he is in the draft next year. Has a strong arm and accuracy is good too.

  49. zhaoyunfan says:

i don’t want to give up on tebow until he has had at least half a season to play imho

  50. dnarizona says:

Plummer record as a starter for the broncos is 39-15 which would be a .072 winning record
