Broncos at Redskins: Second Half Live Blog

November 15th, 2009 - 12:40pm by Gray Caldwell

15:00: The Redskins will receive the ball to start the second half. Matt Prater boots the kickoff through the back of the end zone for a touchback — Washington returner Rock Cartwright signaled that the kick was good — it apparently went through the uprights.

Q3 14:49: The Redskins open the quarter with a screen pass from Jason Campbell to Fred Davis — a 10-yard pickup and a first down. The next play brings a handoff to Ladell Betts, and he is dropped by Brian Dawkins for no gain. There is an injured Bronco on the play — it’s hard to tell who it is at the moment.

Q3 14:14: It’s D.J. Williams, but he jogs off the field followed by trainers. Wesley Woodyard looks to be in the game in his stead. Campbell takes the next snap in the shotgun and gets the pass out quickly to Santana Moss, but he is brought down quickly by Andre’ Goodman after a gain of three yards. That sets up 3rd-and-7 for the Redskins at their own 33-yard line.

Q3 13:18: Darrell Reid and Elvis Dumervil combine to bring down Campbell for the sack on third down. Eddie Royal calls for a fair catch on the ensuing punt, and the Broncos offense will take over at their own 28-yard line.

Q3 12:55: Chris Simms is in at quarterback for the Broncos. On his first play from scrimmage, he hands off to Knowshon Moreno, who finds some room up the edge and picks up nine yards on the carry.

Q3 12:15: Simms hands off again on 2nd-and-1, and Moreno picks up two yards and a first down on the carry. Simms takes the snap from under center, drops back and can’t quite connect with Correll Buckhalter on his first pass of the season. That sets up 2nd-and-10, and Simms lines up in the shotgun. He fires to Jabar Gaffney, who picks up about eight yards, but there’s a flag on the play — pass interference on Eddie Royal. That makes it 2nd-and-20 on the 29-yard line.

Q3 11:00: Simms hands off to Moreno, and the rookie picks up 18 yards. A pass from Simms to Brandon Marshall picks up five yards and the first down.

INJURY UPDATE: Kyle Orton has an ankle injury, and his return is doubtful. D.J. Williams has a neck strain, and his return is probable.

Q3 9:27: Simms is in the shotgun on 2nd-and-10 after an incompletion in first down. After scrambling around a bit in the pocket, his pass falls incomplete on second down as well. That brings up 3rd-and-10 for the Broncos on the Washington 48-yard line. Simms scrambles to his left and finds Brandon Stokley — but the refs determine that the receiver was bobbling the pass as he went out of bounds, and the Broncos are forced to punt.

Q3 9:03: D.J. Williams is back in the game as the Redskins have a first down on their own 32-yard line after the Mitch Berger punt. They run with Ladell Betts on first down, and the back picks up eight yards on the carry. Second down brings another quick gain by Betts — 11 yards and a first down.

Q3 7:54: Andra Davis sacks Campbell on a blitz on first down, and it looks as if the ball came out, but it’s determined that Washington has a 2nd-and-17 at its own 44-yard line. Kenny Peterson is down after the play.

Q3 7:53: Peterson walks off the field with the help of the trainers. The refs announce that the ruling on the field on the previous play was that Campbell’s forward progress was stopped, so there’s no way to review if there was a fumble.

Q3 7:26: D.J. Williams makes the tackle on the ensuing play — a nine-yard completion to the Denver 47-yard line. That makes it 3rd-and-8 for Washington, and Campbell is in the shotgun. He is forced out of the pocket and fires to Devin Thomas near the first-down marker, and the refs rule it a catch. It’s a 10-yard completion to the 37-yard line.

Q3 6:00: Rock Cartwright carries the ball for six yards before being taken down by Davis. On 2nd-and-4, it’s Cartwright again, but he is brought down by a pack of Broncos led by Davis for no gain. That sets up 3rd-and-4, and Campbell fakes a pass before handing off to Betts on the draw play. It looks as if he’s short of the marker, setting up 4th-and-1 at the 28-yard line.

Q3 4:53: The Redskins have elected to go for it on fourth down. Cartwright is in the backfield as the crowd is on its feet. It looks like Campbell audibles at the line and tosses the ball to Cartwright, who tries to find the right sideline. Dawkins is all over it, however, snuffing out the play behind the line of scrimmage and forcing a turnover on downs. There was a flag on the play — holding on the Redskins — which was declined.

Q3 4:31: Simms hands off to Moreno on first down, and he falls forward for a gain of a yard. Simms connects with Scheffler on the next play, but he is hit after a gain of two. On 3rd-and-8, Simms drops back into the shotgun. He is sacked by two Redskins, however, forcing a punt.

Q3 2:55: Berger’s punt bounces an extra 15 or 20 yards down to the Washington 9-yard line, where the Broncos down it. It’s a 65-yard kick.

Q3 2:50: Betts carries for a gain of eight on first down, and Moss hauls in a pass on second down for a gain of five to pick up the first down. The next set of downs starts with a Betts run yet again — a pickup of four yards.

Q3 1:05: Betts takes another carry and picks up another first down on the ensuing play. With the clock winding down in the third quarter, Campbell hands off to Quinton Ganther, but the back is met immediately by a pack of Broncos after a gain of one yard. That brings us to the end of the third quarter, and the Broncos still hold a three-point lead in the contest.

Q4 15:00: Washington has a 2nd-and-9 at its own 35-yard line, and Campbell takes the snap in the shotgun. He gets the ball to Malcom Kelly after two Broncos defenders ran into each other. In the end it was an 18-yard completion and a first down. Betts picks up 18 more yards on the next play, carrying for a first down at the 29-yard line.

Q4 13:05: It’s 2nd-and-6 after a four-yard gain by Cartwright. It brings yet another run from the Redskins, and Cartwright picks up the first down at the 15-yard line. Peterson is back in the game on the defensive line and helps chase Campbell out of the pocket. The quarterback runs out of bounds for a gain of two yards. Second down brings another run from Betts, but Woodyard chases him down and tackles him for no gain.

Q4 11:25: On 3rd-and-8, Campbell finds Cartwright, but D.J. Williams stands him up and the rest of the Broncos defenders arrive to take him down after a gain of one. That brings up fourth down, and Shaun Suisham is in to attempt a 30-yard field goal attempt. It’s good, and the score is tied yet again.

BRONCOS 17, REDSKINS 17

Q4 10:40: Suisham again boots the ball out of bounds on the kickoff, giving the Broncos posession at their own 40-yard line.

Q4 10:33: A Redskins defensive player is down after a three-yard carry by Moreno on first down. It’s Albert Haynesworth.

Q4 10:25: Moreno follows his blockers, finds the hole and picks up 11 yards for a first down in Redskins territory. Simms fakes a handoff to Buckhalter and tries to launch downfield for Marshall — but he is picked off in the end zone by DeAngelo Hall. Hall then pitches the ball to LaRon Landry, and in total the return sets up the Redskins with a first down at their own 40-yard line.

Q4 8:57: Dumervil brings down Campbell for another sack on first down. On 2nd-and-12, Campbell hands off to Betts, who finds a hole for an 11-yard gain. That makes it 3rd-and-1, and Cartwright fights his way for the first down.

Q4 7:10: Peterson brings down Betts on first down after a gain of two, but Campbell fires toward Antwaan Randle El on the following play, good for a nine-yard gain and a first down.

Q4 5:56: A first-down carry by Cartwright nets three yards, followed by a run by Betts on second down that picks up four yards. That puts Betts at exactly 100 yards rushing. On 3rd-and-3, Denver calls its first timeout of the half.

Q4 4:37: The teams are back at the line of scrimmage, and Devin Thomas keeps his balance through several tackles to take a completion all the way to the 5-yard line — a 27-yard gain.

Q4 3:27: Betts picks up three yards on 1st-and-goal, but is stopped for no gain on second down. Denver calls its second timeout of the half.

Q4 2:49: Apparently Betts was credited with a gain of a yard, and it’s 3rd-and-goal for the Redskins at the 1-yard line. Dawkins hits Betts, but as he falls he reaches the ball over the goal line for a touchdown as the FedEx Field crowd explodes. Suisham’s extra point is good and the Redskins take the lead.

REDSKINS 24, BRONCOS 17

Q4 2:36: Royal returns the ball 30 yards to the 27-yard line, where Chris Simms and the offense will take over. Simms is in the shotgun as the crowd is on its feet. He is hit by Andre Carter as he throws, and his pass falls incomplete. On second down, Simms is again in the shotgun and he is again hit as he throws, and his pass again falls incomplete.

Q4 2:27: On 3rd-and-10, Simms drops back and fires very high toward Marshall — the pass is tipped by a defender and falls incomplete. Haynesworth is down again after the play, but walks off the field with the help of trainers.

Q4 2:20: On 4th-and-10, Simms is in the shotgun. he buys time and fires high for Marshall. The receiver leaps in the air but can’t bring it down, and the Broncos turn the ball over on downs.

Q4 2:13: The Broncos stop a Betts run after a gain of a yard and Denver calls its final timeout of the half.

TWO MINUTE WARNING: Betts carries for one more yard as the clock ticks down to the two-minute warning.

2:00: The previous run has been corrected, as it is now being called a rush for no gain. It’s 3rd-and-9 for the Redskins at the 26-yard line. Betts picks up eight yards as the clock continues to run, and Washington lets it tick down to 1:15 before calling its first timeout of the half.

1:15: Suisham is in the game to attempt a 35-yard field goal — and it’s good, giving the Redskins a two-posession lead.

REDSKINS 27, BRONCOS 17

Q4 1:06: Royal returns a squib kick 10 yards to the 26-yard line, where the offense takes over. Simms is in the shotgun and is brought down for a sack. On 2nd-and-14, Simms completes a pass to Moreno, who gets out of bounds after a gain of seven. On 3rd-and-7, Simms is sacked by Brian Orakpo. That brings up 4th-and-17, and the last play of the game. Simms fires incomplete to Daniel Graham and the Redskins get the 27-17 victory.

The Broncos fall to 6-3, and a meeting with the San Diego Chargers at INVESCO Field at Mile High awaits in Week 11.

But we could have once again won this game. Offense started great, then fizzled in the second half. However, this time it was not ortons fault. Its depressing and makes me sick to my stomache to see this happening again. And i can tell its affecting everyone else with their hostle attitudes that im sure will cool down.

Lets face it. We better beat oak and kc…thats 9 wins. Considering we lose to the chargers, eagles, giants etc well go 9-7. However i have a uncomfortable hope that we will do well next week, and in the short week that thursday against the giants.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

I am adressing the majority of the bloggers above, not just you guys, you guys are cool… LOL.

  3. bronco-blaze says:

Also like stated before the chemesty between orton and marshall, you have to remember how open brandon was open due to broken coverage..That wont happen much or not again. However i was finnaly happy to see some deep balls. That will help our offense alot with orton running it.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

bronco-blaze, we only win two out of 8 times AT KC in December, no way you can write that one down in the win column, hence the possible 8-8 record.

  5. bronco-blaze says:

Honestly i cant consider anything with the way this team has kinda shifted..Specialy against the skins. But we dont have shanny here, hence i feel well do better there. However the kc are a good team waiting to explode. Just stating they are the easier teams we have compared to the colts, dolts, and eagles. **which are losing to the chargers badly right now**

  6. 07elway says:

Bay – I’m not trying to start anything or trying to say I’m right… I could’ve been dead wrong. I don’t play the “I told you so” game… not my style. Just saying, people have been practically begging for Simms to be put in and now that he had a pretty bad game I don’t want to hear anymore of the “Simms is better” or “Orton should be benched” talk. Not necessary.

Ha, I can’t believe I didn’t get to watch the game either. I had no control over that at all. The geniuses around here in KC decided just because Denver played at noon (my time) and KC is on at 3… they showed some movie in place of my game and THEN they decide a football game. Doesn’t help that both games were to be on the same channel but its just dumb the way they have this system set up. When we play at 3 & KC is on at noon, they show both games but not the other way around?? Drives me crazy. I can’t wait to move back to Colorado and then I won’t have to worry about it. Then I discovered my computer doesn’t like me watching games on the internet, so there went that idea. So that’s that.

Our next 4 games (SD, Giants, @KC and @Ind) will be our defining moments of the season. Then the Eagles in late December. We should be able to take out Oakland and KC in our house… key word in there “should”. I’m a bit worried now that we lost this game but not in panic mode. Worried they might let this season end like last year. We are always neck and neck with SD and we can’t let them take the West again. I’m sick of hearing how great & mighty they are. We need to take them down! They have A LOT of work to do if they want to beat SD. We won at their house on MNF… I’m sure they’re looking for revenge. God have mercy!

    Keep the faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  7. baylinorcrush says:

    07, I hope it was a good movie… Just kidding, that’s awful.

  8. bronco-blaze says:

07 elway i like your post but people who were calling orton to be benched werent really chanting simms name. ..Alot of the chants were for brandstater. Which is more raw than simms sure. But i agree with your post partly. However, i believe simms will do good if he has time to prepare, but to be fair he didnt have any clue hed be thrown in that situation. Our o line and defense put him in a bad spot. Insted of doing decent or bad..he played horrible.

  9. 07elway says:

LOL, this KC-Oakland game is too funny. Like watching a bunch of chickens play football… neither team can hold onto the ball to save their life. Should put this game on comedy central or something. Sorry, I had to say something, too humorous. :D

  10. bronco-blaze says:

im watching the eagles chargers game and preying for a come back……Cuz if chargers win they will be tied with us….And if we choke the lead away.. /emo

  11. bronco-blaze says:

the blog gods hate you XD

  12. bronco-blaze says:

And for the record guys..We would have blown the skins out of their “skibbies” today like we should have IF and only if orton would have stayed in and didnt get injured..If that makes any of you feel better lol.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

07, about us beating the Chargers, I agree with you, it will be a mighty task. The only way I saw it as a possibility was to beat the Skins to gain confidence, we didn’t therefore beating them is more in the line of a miracle at this point. However if we do it we are back in the game, if we don’t, turn out the lights, the party is over, at least as far as winning our division.

  14. bronco-blaze says:

    i agree with that..

  15. bronco-blaze says:

Guys think the chargers may choke and lose this game? god todays loss will feel so much better if the dolts lost tonight..

  16. 07elway says:

Very funny Bay – it was some Christmas movie so I just watched the Minn-Detroit game. Woo. Hoo.

bronco-blaze – I see your point. I’m just sick of everyone underestimating Orton. McD made him our starter so he deserves our support until proven otherwise. It’s expected a back up wouldn’t be as prepared to play like Simms was vs. if he had started the game. It was sudden cuz no one expected or knew Orton was gonna have an injury but that’s where I’m saying we need back ups that can be reliable in these unforseen situations. I like Brandstater better than Simms but because he’s a rookie, not sure I could rely on him anymore than Simms. But I would’ve picked the Brand man over Simms, no questions.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

bronco-blaze, from my experience, The Eagles hardly ever win on the West coast, remember Oakland earlier this year?

  18. bronco-blaze says:

I have a question however…If we fail this year and go out of contension, do we play tom for the rest of the season and start him next year?

  19. CARAMELLOO says:

What’s up my Broncos Family?! Well I guess we still have a chance to go 13-3, wait I mean 12-4, no I mean 11-5, ok for real 10-6 might be more realistic. I say this bc I can’t seemd to fine the Broncos Defense from the first 6 games! I ignored the Ravens and Steelers game bc the D played their heart out, only to be let down by the Offense.

Now the game wasn’t on here in New Orleans, but looking at the stats…. We made Ledell Betts look like Jerome Bettis! I’m still down with this team and I could care less who the QB is bc I JUST WANT A WIN!

  20. bronco-blaze says:

and idk, but the eagles are driving on the chargers as we speak.. might be closer than we may believe. What makes me feel great is were the only team in a few years that ive actualy see hold off the chargers come back in the second half. Thats awesome!

  21. 07elway says:

I honestly think if Orton hadn’t gotten injured we would have had a rout of the Skins. We let a 2-6 team hand us a loss cuz we couldn’t play defense. We completely blew our lead. Having won this game would have given our boys a boost of confidence going into the SD game. But I’m hoping these 3 losses will put some fire in this team and if we have to lose to 3 East Coast teams in order to give us fire to beat a very hated division team, I’ll take it. I would love nothing more than for us to get 2 wins over SD this season. For me, that win would make up for 2 of our recent losses. Then if we, by a miracle, could win at KC… haha, oh boy, that would be a fun time.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Thank you CARAMELLO, finally a guy who says it like it is talking about the D, or lack thereof, instead of wasting our time talking about Simms.

  23. cobraowner2009 says:

It really sucks to lose to losing teams. I can accept losses to the RAVENS in their stadium and the STEELERS at home…. but I really thought we should win this game. Seeing the team grind to a halt after Orton left the game was really disappointing. It looks as though we’ll be tied with SD and if you asked any of us at the beginning of the year if we’ll accept that at this point, we all would have said YES… but not like this – Losing 3.

I believe we’ll rebound and win the division but at this point I don’t think we belong in the playoffs. If we can’t beat the Redskins in their home, how could we beat any playoff team?

    We better start improving quickly.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

I hate to sound like bad news, but if two losses can’t get you fired up, honestly, what are three loses going to do?

  25. bronco-blaze says:

any news on ortons ankel? i think its broken..he really bent it bad.

  26. baylinorcrush says:

cobra, you are absolutely right, good teams need to beat games that are for the taken, hence, the only conclusion, we are not a good team. But if we are an average team this year (8-8) we will have done well in my book.

  27. 07elway says:

That’s my main concern Bay – they should’ve won this game, period. With the starter or back up QB… if they really wanted to win this game, they would have found a way. End of story. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. They let it get out of hand, yet again. I hope these 3 losses does the trick otherwise I don’t know what else to say. This next game being a heated division game should be enough to fire them up then again, how much downfall does it take to restore the passion? They only have so much time left, so many games left to start making a difference. They are the only ones that can control their fate in the West… 100% up to them to decide how badly they want to win.

  28. CARAMELLOO says:

baylinorcrush I feel ur pain trust me. I was @ work all week telling people….. I’m sooooo proud of the D and I feel that we will be ok bc we have a awesome D. I also said that eventually the O will get on track and help out the D. They are letting teams run on them like last years D. 3 straight weeks other teams Running backs have hit 100 yards or close to.

  29. CARAMELLOO says:

I tell ya what…… Cincy is the real deal!! I still say Tenn took our MOJO!! They have won 3 straight and we have lost 3 straight! Damn I hope they get stomped their next game! Hahahah

  30. baylinorcrush says:

07, I hear you, but I know you did not watch the game, let me give you a short version of it, the first time they had the ball, they drove it down the field for some 70 yard plus in twelve plays and took more than 6 some minutes to do so. They ran the ball at will, Campbell dropped it over the incoming rush that couldn’t get to him for easy short passes and they just moved on down the field into the end zone. It was only 7 points, but right then I knew we were in serious trouble. Trust me when I tell you that our O had nothing to do with this loss, I have watched a few games here and there and even so I am no expert, I know stink when I see it.

  31. diehard1515 says:

bottom line people we need a qb in the draft bcuz kyle orton is not gonna do it and chris sims isn’t gonna do it

  32. bronco-blaze says:

yep there goes the effin chargers winning .GRats broncos were tied with the chargers now. Lets get this ball rollin and not fail.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

Eagles don’t win on the West coast, that’s a gimme.

  34. bronco-blaze says:

=-/ lets hope that is true when they play us..

  35. baylinorcrush says:

diehard1515, obviously you haven’t paid an iota of attention about what we’ve been saying about the D in this game. But, heck, if that makes you feel any better to blame it on our QB’s, more power to you… Anyway, just so you know, our QB for the future is not Orton, not Simms, but Brandstater. Gee…

  36. 07elway says:

Sounds like it wasn’t a pretty game. No loss is pretty. I got so many questions I don’t know where to begin, so I won’t even go there. I know too much info already. lol Anymore info about this loss will only burst my bubble. I can see how this is mostly on our D’s shoulders. We had a lead, they needed to do their part & play defense but that’s no excuse for our offense… they should’ve done more to get a bigger lead, especially over a losing team. I just can’t shake the thought that we lost to a team who was 2-6 coming into this game. Making me sick. That just screams “we have a serious problem”. Again, they have ALOT of work to do if they even want to have a fighting chance against SD and the 3 games after that. Right now, we are our own worst enemy. Fix it McD… you are the coach… something has to be done differently!

  37. baylinorcrush says:

We’re not on the West coast! LOL.

  38. hotsizzle says:

All of our 18 year veterans are too tired and beat up. They will just continue to get worse as the year goes on. That is the worst part there is no improvement & no progression of young players——-no future!!!!!!!

It’s one thing to lose but show signs of improvement, its another to just continue a downward spiral

  39. No. 83 says:

Anyone still want to bench Orton and start Simms? LOL.

3 of 13 for 13 yards. I’d say that he had a pretty good day. ;-D

  40. McDan Dare says:

We have 4 games at home left and need to win these.

We lost the time of possession battle by over 10 minutes and it was not only Simms who was poor.

I start to worry about the professionalism of the team when I read NFL.com reports that Orton is on the sideline in the second half with a heavily taped ankle and then says he is unsure he will be able to play the next week. He should have been having treatment on the ankle to give him the best possible chance of playing. Also McDaniels should have a competent back-up QB that he can rely on. Simms was awful and simply not up to the standard needed by a team like the Broncos.

  41. hotsizzle says:

If Orton doesn’t play next week, it will give us an excuse for getting blown out.

  42. No. 83 says:

I forgot to add the INT as well. So 3/13, 13 yards, and an INT. Nice.

  43. baylinorcrush says:

hotzizzle, you are always talking doom and gloom, so your comments don’t have a lot of weight behind them. A word of wisdom, if you talk up the good in something, people will listen to what you have to say about the bad. If all you do is talk about the bad, no one will pay attention. Not only in football, but in life in general. I owned my own businesse for over twenty years and I never listened to someone who did nothing but criticized things about my business. On the other hand, if they said something good about it in the first place, I would be all ear about their criticism.

  44. sndvl says:

“Allright boys- It’s time to put the women and children to bed and go hunting for dinner”. No excuses. We control our own destiny. Lets start with this Sunday and get back on track. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  45. sndvl says:

    meant next Sunday

  46. vabroncoguy says:

I am watching the game AGAIN and this game just speaks to how bad the coaching is on this squad. There is absolutely no excuse for a team showing u a field goal fake, calling time out, and then SCORING on the exact same fake. For those who believe we would have won with Orton in…we had the ball with more than a minute left in the first in the red zone and Orton didn’t get us a tiuchdown, he wasn’t playing great.. There is no guarantee we would have won. We are not playing well. The deficiencies of the team are being exploited. It is what it is.

  47. rkymtnhigh says:

    Here we go again!!!

This game was ours for the taking all game long. Our D is good but they can’t play all game!! We just can[t execute when it counts!! It just makes me sick that we are starting down this road again!!!

Anyone know what the deal is with Hillis? Orton is a better QB than Simms but how in the heck do you miss Royal that open?

After we had beaten them deep and created space, why didn’t we stick with the running game and finish it?

    Back to the drawing board.

    This Sucks!!!

  48. broncofannsd says:

Has anyone else heard that Orton will not play next Sunday? Fox reported that J. Glazer reported that he will not play next Sunday. If Orton doesn’t play, I want to see Tom B.

  49. The JoEL says:

Am just going to say this, send in the QB thats waiting to explode…..brandstater. this kid is a philip rivers but on our side!!

  50. The JoEL says:

i really wish they give brandstater a shot.
