Broncos at Ravens: Second Half Blog

October 10th, 2010 - 12:42pm by Eric Detweiler

Q3 15:00: Both teams are back on the field. The opening kick of the second half, which the Broncos will receive, is coming shortly.

Q3 14:59: Eddie Royal is back deep to take Cundiff’s kick off. He broke it out to his own 35-yard line after taking it near the goal line. That’s where the Broncos offense will take over. Orton continues his hot end to the first half with a 25-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd. Laurence Maroney ran for three yards on first down. On second down, Orton fired incomplete. His third down pass for Dan Gronkowski fell incomplete and the Broncos punted. Colquitt’s punt bounced inside the Ravens 20 and bounced backward and out of bounds at the Ravens 22-yard line. It’s a 15-yard punt.

Q3 13:11: Ray Rice started the Ravens first possession of the second half with a 3-yard run. On second down, Rice picked up 9 yards and a first down. Flacco then misfired for Heap before hitting Derrick Mason for a 17-yard gain along the sideline. After a run and a short completion, Flacco hit Houshmandzadeh for a completion past the first down marker. However there were offsetting penalties on the play and they’ll replay the down. This time, Flacco misfired for Mason, and Baltimore will punt. The Ravens had a chance to down Sam Koch’s punt inside the 5-yard line but it fell in the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q3 9:42: On first down, Orton hit Lloyd for a 14-yard gain and a quick first down. Andre Brown took the first down handoff and lost a yard. On second down, Buckhalter lost another yard when Terrell Suggs dragged him down in the backfield. Before third-and-12, the Broncos took a false start penalty. On third-and-17, Gronkowski made a 9-yard catch. It’s the longest catch of his career but not enough for a first down. Colquitt came out to punt and hit a 46-yard punt. After a 10-yard return by Chris Carr, the Ravens will start at their own 28-yard line. David Bruton was shaken up on the play.

Q3 6:46: Rice picked up three yards on first down. On second down, Rice gained 4 more yards, setting up third-and-3. A screen pass to Rice gained five yards and a first down. On the ensuing snap, the Broncos had 12-men on the field. The Ravens now have a 1st-and-5. Willis McGahee picked up 10 yards and a first down on the run. On the ensuing first down, McGahee gained 3 yards. On second down, Perrish Cox knocked a pass away from Derrick Mason. Flacco escaped the rush on third down, picking up just enough for a first down with a stretch. Mason grabbed a 10-yard completion on the ensuing play for another first down at the Broncos 24-yard line.

Q3 1:20: Two runs, by Rice and McClain, moved the chains for the Ravens again. On the next play, Rice picked up 9 yards and followed that up with a 3-yard run for a first down, setting up first-and-goal at the 2-yard line as the third quarter ended.

Q4 15:00: On the first play of the final quarter, McClain blasted to the 1-yard line. On second down, Rice got in for his second touchdown of the game. The run capped a 14-play, 72-yard drive that chewed more than seven minutes off the game clock. After Cundiff’s extra point, the Ravens lead 24-7 with 14:21 left in the game.

RAVENS 24, BRONCOS 7

Q4 14:21: Cundiff’s kick went through the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos start at their own 20-yard line again.

Q4 14:20: Orton began the drive by hitting Gaffney for an 8-yard gain and then a 5-yard gain, before finding Eddie Royal for 13 yards and Graham for 28 yards. After a 7-yard pass for Gaffney, Orton is now 5-for-5 on the drive. On the ensuing play from the Baltimore 19-yard line, Orton couldn’t find Lloyd. Matt Prater is on to try a 38-yard field goal. The kick is good to cut into Baltimore’s lead with 11:50 left. It was an 8-play, 61-yard drive.

BRONCOS 24, RAVENS 10

Q4 11:50: Josh Wilson returned Prater’s kick to the 20-yard line, but a holding penalty means the Ravens will start from their own 10-yard line. Rice broke a 12-yard run on the first play of the possession. The running back picked up 1-yard on the next play and 3 yards on the next. The Broncos used a timeout before the third-and-6 play.

Q4 9:49: Flacco hit Ray Rice for a 7-yard gain and a first down. The Ravens have first-and-10 from their own 33-yard line. Rice picked up 3 yards on the next play. Brian Dawkins is shaken up on the play.

Q4 9:00: On second down, Rice scampered for 5 yards, bringing up third down. Rice ran for 13 yards and a first down. On the next set of downs, Rice had a pair of short runs, picking up a total of 4 yards, bringing up third-and-6. The Ravens converted that on a Flacco pass to Le’Ron McClain and on the next play, Willis McGahee burst off the right side and scored a 30-yard touchdown. Cundiff’s extra point puts the Ravens up 31-10.

***INJURY UPDATE***: Brian Dawkins has a knee injury. He will not return.

RAVENS 31, BRONCOS 10

Q4 5:06: Cundiff’s kick again sails to the back of the end zone and Royal just takes a knee. The Broncos start at their own 20-yard line. Orton can’t hit Lloyd on first down. On second down, a short pass to Buckhalter gained 12 yards. A pass to Gaffney picked up 5 more yards on the next play before an intentional grounding penalty put them back 10 yards. On third-and-15, Orton and Lloyd couldn’t connect and the Broncos will punt.

Q4 4:05: Colquitt’s 33-yard punt sailed out of bounds and the Ravens will take over at their own 40-yard line. On first down, McGahee picked up 5 yards, and on second down, he got 5 more for another first down. On first down from midfield, McGahee got 2 yards. McGahee got the call again on the next play, picking up 5 more yards before the Broncos used their second timeout.

Q4 2:07: On third-and-2, the Ravens were flagged for holding. On the ensuing play, McGahee picked up 6 yards, setting up a fourth-and-6 at the two-minute warning.

Q4 1:58: Eddie Royal faircaught Sam Koch’s punt at the 10-yard line. That’s where the Broncos take over. On first down, Orton’s pass for Lloyd was nearly picked off by Josh Wilson. The Broncos picked up 31 yards on a pass interference penalty drawn by Brandon Lloyd. Orton followed with an incompletion and then an 8-yard completion to Gaffney. On third-and-2, Royal pulled in a 7-yard catch and a first down. On the ensuing play, Lloyd reeled in a 44-yard touchdown pass in between a pair of defenders. That’s a 5-play, 90-yard drive. Matt Prater adds the extra point to cut the deficit to 31-17 with 35 seconds left.

RAVENS 31, BRONCOS 17

Q4 0:35: The Broncos lined up for an onside kick attempt. Prater’s attempt bounced high in the air and T.J. Houshmandzadeh grabbed it for the Ravens. Flacco takes a knee to end the game.

The Ravens win 31-17, improving to 4-1 this season and dropping Denver to 2-3. That’s all from M&T Bank Stadium. The Broncos return to action next week when they host the New York Jets.

Well, 88 just addressed the D, or lack of, good.

  2. B.smith says:

SBBF-Tebow not ready yet? Ready for what…learning? He has been doing it all his life! John Elway learned by being thrown into the fire and last i chkd-we went to the SB 84. Dont think it hurt him to be in the game! In fact, i think it made him a better player! He learned a lot of nfl lessons in his first year and i think Tebow could b the same….

Would it be perfect or the same, maybe not..maybe so-nobody knows. And they/we wont till he gets his chance!

  3. baylinorcrush says:

It all starts with the coaching, I guess that’s my repeat thought for the night.

    Houston!…. We got problems….

  4. Broncosfolife88 says:

And I think McDaniels is doing exactly what he needs to do. What every coach in the NFL that has had success in the past has done and that is to do it his way not the nfl norm or whatever way he is making this team into the image he wants and believe me I see some great things coming from this coach. a few more elements and we are a team that cannot be stopped in so many ways. ANY GIVEN SUNDAY WE CAN WIN

    GO BRONCOS

  5. socalbigbroncofan says:

bay. i do agree about our d. no pressure on the qb and we have to stop the run. we stopped c j last week. and we all seen how they went after our rookie cox today. and ray rice is good. some changes do need to happen. and just like the rest of you i want a winning season this season. yes tired of “rebuilding” time to win. especially when im surrounded by raider fans and chargers fans.

  6. ravensfan4lfe says:

    Welcome to RAVEN COUNTRY baby

  7. baylinorcrush says:

Finally a McD supporter to the rescue, I think you are the first tonight. Not saying I agree with you as you must well know, in fact I pretty much completely disagree about your vision of McD, but I’m just glad both sides are voicing their opinions.

  8. Broncosfolife88 says:

Ravensfan lol im glad Denver can chalk up another hater love our haters lol good game and congrats Rice is a beast man

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, Ravens might go all the way this year, good for you.

  10. B.smith says:

Any given sunday, when we r playing good teams…we can get our a—- kicked! Give me any proof that we can win against good teams? We are always down against the good teams? Orton is doing a great job, i am not denying that-but OBVIOUSLY he doesnt inspire our defense to make a stop or go 3 and out to get the ball back to them?

With what he has to work with-ha has done a great job..But when was the last time we had a lead against a good team??? I cant think of one either….

And by the way, the Ravens are just that…a good team…Nothing special till they become more consistent. Against us they look like world beaters…but then again-WHO DOESNT?

  11. broncos504 says:

if the raven r good look at the jets d no way we score a least we had a big time wr like u know who the beast or a decent play caller cause mcd sucks at calling play running on 3 and 10 god some one help me look on the bright side after the jets it get alot easier

  12. ravensfan4lfe says:

I just love reading the blogs of the teams that we beat, and it’s funny how they just turn on eachother

  13. baylinorcrush says:

No one is turning on eachother buddy, we are being nice to you I suggest you do the same.

  14. ravensfan4lfe says:

If you just look at your team, the only thing that you are missing is a running game, and that’s it!

  15. baylinorcrush says:

And a run D today, obviously.

  16. socalbigbroncofan says:

b.smith. i wish tebow would just come in and save the day or our season. im afaid he’ll get hurt by some of these teams who are gunning for him. i just want him to be ready. but your right we wont know till he plays. but i can tell you one thing the way orton is playing thats not going to happen unless he gets hurt. who knows. ill tell you what though the parade after Tebow wins the super bowl never gets old when i play madden. lol

  17. B.smith says:

Yes…congrats to you Ravens fan, but then again, how great a win is it when you played a team the likes of detroit? (who we lost to by the way).

  18. ravensfan4lfe says:

If the D stays on the field the way they did, yes they will give up yards. If you had a run game, it would give them a rest, and open up the pass game more, but with only 39yards, is not getting it done.

  19. socalbigbroncofan says:

ravens youre good but not that good its still early. you did lose to a terrible bengals team and beat a steeler team with no big ben. overall u guys played a better game. so congrats.

  20. B.smith says:

I agree, but it doesnt matter what team we play, the run o isnt going to get any better. Orton is trying, but he isnt the type of player to take a team on his shoulders and lead them to the promise land-is Tebow, probably not-all i am saying is that the game would be a whole lot more exciting for us-the fans- to watch than what we have been subjected to…Getting beaten down to where our defense just gave up ….makes me sick just thinking about it

  21. Broncosfolife88 says:

B tell me what the quarter back for our team has to do with our defense getting thrashed for those rushing yards our quarterback who kept us in this game yes in this game yet the holes in the defense were opened up. I’m sorry bro i just dont get it and did you ever think that maybe our defense needs to step up and give our offense something to be “inspired by” because I didnt see them make any moves to make this team feel inspired by. I dont believe this whole inspired or maybe what i view as complimentary football which we didnt play is what you call inspiration. Either way it comes down to a defense that allowed 396 yards between a qb and their to leading rushers 82 yards more than Orton put up Orton alone if thats not inspiring play from the quarterback than what is pray tell
ravens fan what you see is called the bandwagon effect which is why i rarely come on here

  22. ravensfan4lfe says:

If you play Tebow with no run game, that will only get the kid killed, cause if I was a D corrinator, I would send the dogs almost every play

  23. Broncosfolife88 says:

As would I (ravens) and why why am i the only on who believes in orton

  24. socalbigbroncofan says:

    b. smith thats why i dont want tim to play for exactly what ravens said.

  25. Broncosfolife88 says:

Oh ya cuz ive seen so many he doesnt got what it takes guys tear up this league for so long ie Kurt Warner because you keep telling some one they cant and they love to prove you wrong

  26. socalbigbroncofan says:

ravens let me ask u something. i beleive u guys have a great team this year. who do you think is your biggest competion in the afc is.

  27. B.smith says:

No bandwagon here…I have been a fan for a long time which is why it is upsetting to see my team play the way they did today. And the way they have been for several years now…Again, im not saying that Orton isnt doing a great job with what he has to work with…But 3/4 of his yards today were trash-yes trash….they laid back and let him throw….

And yes…you are correct in saying that the defense needs to step up and play with a set!!! I covered this earlier…but they gave up/quit…how else can you explain all the yardage they gave up against the run today w they beat down CJ last week…tells me that they have absolutely no confidence in Orton or the offense to get it done w it matters. Ne excuses, everything looked like cr– today!

  28. ravensfan4lfe says:

Most rookie QB’s that do have a good year, most have a good run game to, look at Flacco

  29. ravensfan4lfe says:

I think that the only team that can beat us …… is Ourself.

  30. B.smith says:

I disagree, I think that the run game would be better with Tebow because he would also give you the option to run the ball…play action would also work better…

Doesnt really matter does it? Team stinks this year….no running game, no defense=another wasted year…Telling us we have to wait and get past these good teams-till we start playing weaker teams so we can get good is pathetic! And sad. Your either good or your not….And if we arent good, then take the friggin steps to become so…

  31. ravensfan4lfe says:

And we get Ed Reed back in 2 weeks, it’s going to be very hard for any team after that

  32. B.smith says:

And you know what that means, play the younger guys-let them learn to become good by making mistakes-and holding a clipboard isnt going to do that!

  33. Broncosfolife88 says:

not saying you are bandwagon B lol honestly i meant other sites been on after games like raven does Denver has the best fans and youre one of us homie and i think we gonna have to agree to disagree on this because i feel Orton is doing his part and the rest of the team needs to come up to his level in the end we did not play good enough to win next week its the jets in the Mile High City it will be a good game. My prediction Orton plays “inspired football” lol (just messin) puts up the same type of numbers he has been and we win a strong game at home to even us out.
    GO BRONCOS SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY

  34. sndvl says:

Penalties lost this game for us. Orton seems to be the only constant on our team. Well Champ too, but who knows where that’s gonna lead. You guys wanna throw the rest of the season down the drain, fine. All you McTinkerTebownites may very well get your wish. All I know is Orton is a playa. Hes not responsible for all those holding calls that killed all those drives. Then there’s the big glaring factor that THESE DENVER BRONCOS HAVE NO RUN GAME
I much rather would have kept those three picks Baltimore stole from us. Ha. They beat us up after robbing us in April.
At least Lloyd is making me not miss Marshall. And Orton is doing his part. I really hope when they break down the film, the players realize it. And rally around Orton. Because he is doing something worth paying attention to.

  35. B.smith says:

John never had a great run game-Josh Freeman didnt have a great run game-Vince young didnt w he first came out. Tom Brady certainly didnt have one…Peyton Manning didnt either…They all learned the hard way-which is the ONLY way to become what we want….for them to learn while playing…

  36. socalbigbroncofan says:

ravens, sorry to tell u this but ed reed is old and over rated.

  37. Broncosfolife88 says:

John never had a great run game and couldnt finish anything without it until my favorite bronco of all time TD came in and finished the puzzle just sayin and Orton has had better games than he did already just sayin

  38. B.smith says:

88-i hopw you are right and the players come out and kick some J-E-T-S A–! But if i were you, i would buy some blindfolds cause its gonna be U-G-L-Y!!! Another team that plays tough, physical football. Something the broncs just dont know how to do-unfortunately….

  39. ravensfan4lfe says:

He is only 32, and only plyed 9 yrs and is still one of the best

  40. Broncosfolife88 says:

Also who cares about John anymore he is the past and he played in the old nfl its a different game now

  41. B.smith says:

Yes, but we are talking about a what-8 yr vet? Im talking about our rookie and getting him the experience he needs to get our team going in the right direction…I just want the games to be fun and exciting again. And this brand of football that we are getting from them now isnt!!! Its boring, un-inspiring- and very, very aggravating.

I touched on the fact that John didnt win it till TD came into the pic earlier…I agree…Orton may have #s going for him-but as we all know…WINS are what counts, not stats….

  42. Broncosfolife88 says:

ravens i like reed too i am a football fan second only to being a broncos fan and reed is a football player i love football players but enjoy while it lasts cuz he is getting older and soon the ravens will drop him and well pick him up lol

  43. sndvl says:

Man, starting Tebow the way Orton is playing is ludicrous. That would basically guarantee a losing season. For what? So Tebow can gain experience for next year? Even if there is a next season. And we can watch McD “coach” this team as he has the first 21?
Most of you know my offseason mantra. Thought I was crazy then, huh?

  44. B.smith says:

I am only bringing up John and these other QBs to make a point-or are u just listening/reading what you want to?

  45. 07elway says:

lol, man this turned into quite the discussion.

Broncosfolife88 – you’re not the only one supporting Orton all the way. I’ve had his back since he got to Denver. The more he plays, the better he gets, the more confident he gets and I’m proud to have him as a Bronco. He was given his fair chance and he ran with it, he fought for it, he’s proven himself and he’s proven his critics wrong. Orton can only be held responsible for so much, he played his part, he had a penalty or two in the game today but he also got us 2 TDs to keep us from being shut out. For the most part, I think Broncos Country has rallied around Orton. He’s got everyone saying “Cutler who??”. Just like when Demaryius Thomas plays at his best, he’ll have all of Broncos Country saying “Marshall who?”… if he hasn’t done that already.

And yes, penalties killed this game for us. Will take me awhile to get over these penalties. We had plenty of chances to get within 3 pts or even tie the game for awhile but like I said earlier, we did ourselves in.

  46. B.smith says:

Let me ask you ALL a question-”Why do you watch football”?

  47. B.smith says:

To be entertained? For the love of the game?

  48. Broncosfolife88 says:

Orton is still young five years in in his prime and showing it if this team conforms around him we have a chance and just to clarify i like Tebow really liked him in college but i really dont want him as the starter for this team i think Orton is the right type of QB for this team and system but hey in the end it comes down to wins not stats agreed but all im tryin to say is we are not losing because of Orton it is the other factors that are stopping us. Well thats all folks have a good night ravens enjoy this win you guys played a soliid game so congrats

  49. Broncosfolife88 says:

GO BRONCOS LETS GETG IT TOGETHER AND TEAR IT UP NEXT WEEK
