Broncos at Ravens: Second Half Blog

October 10th, 2010 - 12:42pm by Eric Detweiler

Q3 15:00: Both teams are back on the field. The opening kick of the second half, which the Broncos will receive, is coming shortly.

Q3 14:59: Eddie Royal is back deep to take Cundiff’s kick off. He broke it out to his own 35-yard line after taking it near the goal line. That’s where the Broncos offense will take over. Orton continues his hot end to the first half with a 25-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd. Laurence Maroney ran for three yards on first down. On second down, Orton fired incomplete. His third down pass for Dan Gronkowski fell incomplete and the Broncos punted. Colquitt’s punt bounced inside the Ravens 20 and bounced backward and out of bounds at the Ravens 22-yard line. It’s a 15-yard punt.

Q3 13:11: Ray Rice started the Ravens first possession of the second half with a 3-yard run. On second down, Rice picked up 9 yards and a first down. Flacco then misfired for Heap before hitting Derrick Mason for a 17-yard gain along the sideline. After a run and a short completion, Flacco hit Houshmandzadeh for a completion past the first down marker. However there were offsetting penalties on the play and they’ll replay the down. This time, Flacco misfired for Mason, and Baltimore will punt. The Ravens had a chance to down Sam Koch’s punt inside the 5-yard line but it fell in the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q3 9:42: On first down, Orton hit Lloyd for a 14-yard gain and a quick first down. Andre Brown took the first down handoff and lost a yard. On second down, Buckhalter lost another yard when Terrell Suggs dragged him down in the backfield. Before third-and-12, the Broncos took a false start penalty. On third-and-17, Gronkowski made a 9-yard catch. It’s the longest catch of his career but not enough for a first down. Colquitt came out to punt and hit a 46-yard punt. After a 10-yard return by Chris Carr, the Ravens will start at their own 28-yard line. David Bruton was shaken up on the play.

Q3 6:46: Rice picked up three yards on first down. On second down, Rice gained 4 more yards, setting up third-and-3. A screen pass to Rice gained five yards and a first down. On the ensuing snap, the Broncos had 12-men on the field. The Ravens now have a 1st-and-5. Willis McGahee picked up 10 yards and a first down on the run. On the ensuing first down, McGahee gained 3 yards. On second down, Perrish Cox knocked a pass away from Derrick Mason. Flacco escaped the rush on third down, picking up just enough for a first down with a stretch. Mason grabbed a 10-yard completion on the ensuing play for another first down at the Broncos 24-yard line.

Q3 1:20: Two runs, by Rice and McClain, moved the chains for the Ravens again. On the next play, Rice picked up 9 yards and followed that up with a 3-yard run for a first down, setting up first-and-goal at the 2-yard line as the third quarter ended.

Q4 15:00: On the first play of the final quarter, McClain blasted to the 1-yard line. On second down, Rice got in for his second touchdown of the game. The run capped a 14-play, 72-yard drive that chewed more than seven minutes off the game clock. After Cundiff’s extra point, the Ravens lead 24-7 with 14:21 left in the game.

RAVENS 24, BRONCOS 7

Q4 14:21: Cundiff’s kick went through the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos start at their own 20-yard line again.

Q4 14:20: Orton began the drive by hitting Gaffney for an 8-yard gain and then a 5-yard gain, before finding Eddie Royal for 13 yards and Graham for 28 yards. After a 7-yard pass for Gaffney, Orton is now 5-for-5 on the drive. On the ensuing play from the Baltimore 19-yard line, Orton couldn’t find Lloyd. Matt Prater is on to try a 38-yard field goal. The kick is good to cut into Baltimore’s lead with 11:50 left. It was an 8-play, 61-yard drive.

BRONCOS 24, RAVENS 10

Q4 11:50: Josh Wilson returned Prater’s kick to the 20-yard line, but a holding penalty means the Ravens will start from their own 10-yard line. Rice broke a 12-yard run on the first play of the possession. The running back picked up 1-yard on the next play and 3 yards on the next. The Broncos used a timeout before the third-and-6 play.

Q4 9:49: Flacco hit Ray Rice for a 7-yard gain and a first down. The Ravens have first-and-10 from their own 33-yard line. Rice picked up 3 yards on the next play. Brian Dawkins is shaken up on the play.

Q4 9:00: On second down, Rice scampered for 5 yards, bringing up third down. Rice ran for 13 yards and a first down. On the next set of downs, Rice had a pair of short runs, picking up a total of 4 yards, bringing up third-and-6. The Ravens converted that on a Flacco pass to Le’Ron McClain and on the next play, Willis McGahee burst off the right side and scored a 30-yard touchdown. Cundiff’s extra point puts the Ravens up 31-10.

***INJURY UPDATE***: Brian Dawkins has a knee injury. He will not return.

RAVENS 31, BRONCOS 10

Q4 5:06: Cundiff’s kick again sails to the back of the end zone and Royal just takes a knee. The Broncos start at their own 20-yard line. Orton can’t hit Lloyd on first down. On second down, a short pass to Buckhalter gained 12 yards. A pass to Gaffney picked up 5 more yards on the next play before an intentional grounding penalty put them back 10 yards. On third-and-15, Orton and Lloyd couldn’t connect and the Broncos will punt.

Q4 4:05: Colquitt’s 33-yard punt sailed out of bounds and the Ravens will take over at their own 40-yard line. On first down, McGahee picked up 5 yards, and on second down, he got 5 more for another first down. On first down from midfield, McGahee got 2 yards. McGahee got the call again on the next play, picking up 5 more yards before the Broncos used their second timeout.

Q4 2:07: On third-and-2, the Ravens were flagged for holding. On the ensuing play, McGahee picked up 6 yards, setting up a fourth-and-6 at the two-minute warning.

Q4 1:58: Eddie Royal faircaught Sam Koch’s punt at the 10-yard line. That’s where the Broncos take over. On first down, Orton’s pass for Lloyd was nearly picked off by Josh Wilson. The Broncos picked up 31 yards on a pass interference penalty drawn by Brandon Lloyd. Orton followed with an incompletion and then an 8-yard completion to Gaffney. On third-and-2, Royal pulled in a 7-yard catch and a first down. On the ensuing play, Lloyd reeled in a 44-yard touchdown pass in between a pair of defenders. That’s a 5-play, 90-yard drive. Matt Prater adds the extra point to cut the deficit to 31-17 with 35 seconds left.

RAVENS 31, BRONCOS 17

Q4 0:35: The Broncos lined up for an onside kick attempt. Prater’s attempt bounced high in the air and T.J. Houshmandzadeh grabbed it for the Ravens. Flacco takes a knee to end the game.

The Ravens win 31-17, improving to 4-1 this season and dropping Denver to 2-3. That’s all from M&T Bank Stadium. The Broncos return to action next week when they host the New York Jets.

But really he hasn’t returned kicks since pee wee football. and MCD expects him NOT to cough up the dang ball when he gets hit by NFL talent especialy the ravens who are trained to try to hit hard enough to knock a player out of the game!!!!
It is a basic ego philosiphy thing
kinda Disgusts me realy Eddy royal is faster shiftier and has a Td on his resume.
    What is realy going on???
Can anyone say learning on the job???
Mabey if you are a construction worker or an entry level position getting paid penuts but an NFL head coach.
    It really bothers me

  2. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, the real bummer is the two times we play championship caliber teams, the Colts and the Ravens, we lose by 2 TD’s each time. We are definitely nowhere close to being able to compete with those kind of teams, we are who I thought we were, a 9-7 team at best with no right to compete in the playoffs having what we got now, enough embarrassment please. Shape up or try the new kids like B.smith kept saying. Problem is McD says he is not rebulding, he thinks he can win now, that’s why he doesn’t play the kids who did so well in preseason, he is afraid to mess things up. NEWSFLASH!, things are messed up as is, you are not going to win with what you got on the field now, or not often enough to make a difference, so take a chance, play your rooks, mix it up, afraid that might make you lose your job? I got news for you, the way your veterans are playing is in no way a job security for you.

  3. B.smith says:

Most if not all of the young head coaches have to go thru learning pains…IE…Shanahan, Belichik…The only ones i know that havent had to go thru that are ones who inherit a team that is built for success already…Mike Tomlin and the coach of Indy(cant remember his name)?

But in the end, they were fired werent they before they learned and grew into what they were going to be!

  4. baylinorcrush says:

OC is right, and I’ll say it in very simple terms:

Playing football for McD is too cerebral, period, no flow to anything, just constant game adjustments mainly resulting in penalties or time outs for not even knowing how many guys you got on the field, come on, GET SERIOUS!!!!

  5. B.smith says:

I agree baylin…If he thinks he has security in playing a bunch of veterans he is truly mistaken…Bowlen brought him in to WIN, not continue to play 500 ball with a bunch of has beens and never will bees.

You want success, take a chance and get the young kids in there and mix things up. At least then you can say that they are learning on the job, and maybe…just maybe…you might be surprised to find that you do have a lot of talent there to which you can draw some security from!

  6. baylinorcrush says:

Funny, no big McD supporter blogging right now, LOL.

  7. broncosmex says:

    =|.. so frustrating..

  8. Orange you glad says:

What was funny was at the start of the game they showed Tebow and said they plan to use him in the red zone, only thing was’ we never got there till late in the 3rd qtr and by then we had to play catch up. How bad is our running game? OH” I’m sorry we don’t have a running game. This game was a complete embarrassment and was so hard to watch. I hate to see what the Jets have in store for us, the only good thing is that the game next week in is Denver. They better snap out of it real fast cause the Jets are going to look at this weeks tape and come in licking there chops. I say start TT and let the chips fall where they may and chalk this season up for experience.

  9. B.smith says:

    ABSOLUTELY Orange!….

  10. Orange_Crusher says:

    WOOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!

    IS IT TEBOW TIME YET!!!!!!!

    ILMSDTB!!!!!!!!

  11. baylinorcrush says:

OC, you said 7th game, right? againts the Raiders. You in a hurry now? LOL.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

On a good note Orton had another game with 300 plus yards, so he is still in for the record, haha, LMAO… just joking.

  13. B.smith says:

Now theres something to look forward to!!!

  14. socalbigbroncofan says:

there sure is a lot of negativity going on. i hate to see our team loose like the way they did today. but we played against probally one of the best teams in the league today. have a lil hope people. this division is still up for grabs. especially after the chargers lost to the raiders. which was great by the way. besides look at our schedule, titans, ravens, and next the jets. come on some of the best defenses in the nfl. after a big lost like today i come here to see some possitive from my fellow BRONCO fans. if we could pull off some wins at home against our next games which i think are the jets and raiders. were back in this. keep up the faith and dont give up peeps.
LETS GO DENVER. LETS GO BRONCOS.

  15. B.smith says:

Dont get me wrong-Orton is doing fine with what he has to work with….and we do have some good receivers….but if we are going to lose anyway….

  16. B.smith says:

ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE?!!! We make every team with a joke of an offense look like world beaters!!! The jags!!! The Ravens….What a joke….

Granted the Ravens DEFENSE may be the best in the league, but last i chkd their offense wasnt top of the league…although we made them look like it today!

  17. baylinorcrush says:

socal, it’s not about losing a game, it’s HOW you lose, obviously so many phases of our team are so inefficient if not inexistant, frustration is totally called for in my opinion. But yeah, let’s win the next 4 games and everything will be fine…. BUT HOW?

  18. B.smith says:

I was on the McD bandwagon for the first 4 wks of the season-giving him the opp. to show what he can do with guys in their 2nd year of the system…but come on!! What have they shown us but the fact that they have regressed from where they were last year….

Cant run the ball, losing to good teams….falling apart late in games….stop me if i am wrong here…let me know what you are hanging on to?

  19. Orange you glad says:

I think if Tebow starts it just might give us the nimble QB factor, sure he is a rookie and he will make a lot of mistakes but on the other hand he has that ability to RUN when in danger and get positive yards, Throw the kid in the fire and see what happens? it can only open up more options for our running game, darn I said it again, I meant lack of running game. He is a tough kid with a lot of guts grid savvy and most of all HEART! We need some kind of jump start to get us going again.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Let me put it to all you guys as simple as I know how, it doesn’t really matter who is QB at this point, unfortunately Orton is still our best option now, the following is the simple truth of the matter:

    Ravens’ rushing yards today: 233

    Broncos rushing yards today: 39

    ANY QUESTIONS?

The QB has absolutley zero to do with most of our problems, you guys are making him a scapegoat, but you are barking at the wrong tree.

  21. B.smith says:

We either move forward or we fall behind. Look at the likes of Kansas City, sorry to say, but they are looking pretty good. Yeah they lost today(to Indy, by less pts than we did). You can see that they are comng together as a team and playing as a team. The Raiders are not good in record yet, but if you watch their games, they play with a lot of heart now. And are getting the pieces together to right the ship. As bad as it pains me to say we have regressed to the bottom of the AFC west…

And to think that we may be in store for more of what we had today is really disheartening…

  22. B.smith says:

I agree w you to a pt baylin…Orton may not be the problem(the running game is) but if he isnt inspiring the offense or more importantly, the defense…then whats the point?

This team is lacking a LEADER!!! Someone who is going to inspire the team to KNOW that they are NEVER out of anything. And yes, they may be hollow words coming from a rookie. but i GUARANTEE you, with Tebow in there, this team would rally around him, and he would light a fire bigger than california and boulder combined!

  23. Orange_Crusher says:

HAHA! I have to change it up a little and start calling for Timtainium Terminator to bring a second dimention to the Bronco offense no later than 10-24-10…….

    What can I say…

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER TEBRONCOS!!!!!

The best decision Josh ever made = Drafting TT

  24. broncofannsd says:

I don’t agree with playing Tebow. Timmy needs to sit and learn. I’m not one to say the sky is falling, but after the game today, there are some glaring issues with this team. One has to wonder if the Champ contract fiasco is going to translate into the same type of locker room disruption the team encountered last year. Champ is a true professional and I have the utmost respect for him, so I don’t believe he will be a disruption. But the matter in which the organization handled everything is definitely cause for concern. There is nothing more demoralizing to a defense than a dominating running game. We are in a heap of trouble without one. Keeping the faith, but not ignoring the facts.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

That sure would make the Broncos look stupid for the 9mil plus owed to Orton next year, the most expensive back up QB in the history of the world, LOL.

  26. B.smith says:

All the great teams the broncos had in the past with John Elway knew that very same thing…that they were never out of anythng. And im not saying he is the next JE…but if you have watched the way he was in florida…how he inspired players to be better than they may have normally been…its inspiring.

For a guy to leave blood, all his energy on the field is inspiring. Watching him fight for every yard, and coming back to the sidelines yelling and screaming with a passion i havent seen in Denver since JE is definitely inspiring! I cant wait!

  27. Orange_Crusher says:

To make myself clear… I agree with B.smith on that point…

TT is the Fire to Inspire… Inspire the team and the Coach and us!

Problem is that Josh don’t even know why he drafted TT. He Traded our best short yardage RB for BQ and then gave Orton a pretTy lucrative 2 yr deal to make him the highest paid QB on the team….

I personally think that God just answered my prayers and drafted TT to my team… Josh probably won’t even be here coach him or to ever find out why he drafted the kid….

    ILMSDB!!!!!

  28. B.smith says:

I agree bay. But after 5 games it sure looks like it was a waste of dough. He is NO John Elway…meaning that he doesnt have the ability to take a team on his shoulders and lead them to the promise land without a running game. Elway did it, but he didnt win it till he did get one. So even he had his limitations.

  29. casinoroyal19 says:

i have to agree here. i amm one of the biggest tebow fans on this website. i agree with everything B.smith has said. starting tebow could seriously lite a fire underneath every butt on that team. and most importantly, it would re-energize just about every Bronco fan in the United States of America

  30. B.smith says:

I dont know the stats, but if someone does please correct me, but when they play good teams,,it seems to me we are ALWAYS playing from behind. I cant recall ever playing a good team with the lead? It seems to me Orton can never get the O going to give us the lead we need to keep the defense inspired…Leading to the reason why our defense gets in situations like they did today and dont have the confidence that the O is going to get it done ? Just a thought..

  31. casinoroyal19 says:

b.smith kinda has a point there about playing from behind. a defense on any team plays better when they have something to defend. you cant defend a 20 point deficit. the scarier thing is that we usually cant fight back from those deficits

  32. B.smith says:

It would light a fire in me to watch my beloved Broncos! Thats what made it so much fun watching John play, he not only inspired you but made you feel you were in every game by the way he lead the team…It was never(not to me anyway)about stats with John. It was about him throwing, running for a first down and being pumped up about getting it….the comraderie he had with the other players brought them up to a level where they themselves played better…

If you recall some of the players John played with and inspired them to be better, its unbelievable to recall….

    Clarence Kay
    Sammy Winder
    Gerald Willhite
    The three Amigoes

Just a few of the names right off the top of my head-not great players but guys he made better because he gave them the confidence to WIN!

  33. B.smith says:

And from what i recall, John never played with the leagues best defense. Bend but dont break defense in our SB years….but because of John, they stuck in the game and played their hearts out to give him the chance to win. Why? Because they believed in HIM…And i dont think this defense has that same confidence in Orton…

  34. baylinorcrush says:

In that regard McD is just as big a problem than Orton, anyone who thinks our players have confidence in what McD is doing to make us win games is fooling themselves, players have no more confidence in McD than Orton or vice versa, they both kind of offer no inspiration to speak of, with both of them players know they are in for a long day, at least that’s my opinion.

  35. B.smith says:

Upon reflection…one of the BIGGEST pieces that is missing from our offense is not only a running game, but where do we have any tight end play? I know Graham is a great blocker…but that doesnt help you stretch the field or open up the middle of the field…Meaning he doesnt scare me as a receiver…Sure he catches a few but does he really scare you like Gates, Gonzales, Clark, Witten, Shockey…and the list goes on and on.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Bottom line is it all starts with the coach, no saying what McD would do to Tebow, he already said he wouldn’t want him to run, and he wants to change his delivery, and… well, you get the point, the Tebow you saw in college may never be under McD, just saying.

  37. B.smith says:

I agree bay, the guys in the locker room arent inspired by their coach any more than the QB. And when you have that, you are right…its going to be a LONG day for a defense…..

  38. benbronco9 says:

I am not a TT fan I have said that from the beggining I personaly don’t think he has a good enough throwing motion to be a top flight NFL QB. And I think he is too slow to realy be good for any true running threat. I don’t want to throw this season away yet. We haven’t even played a division foe yet with a 5-1 division record we would definately have playoff aspirations. and I don’t think TT is that it we are 7 -3 then throw him in he just may be able to inspire the team to do what at that point I haven’t figured out???
Save face for MCD and buy him another year or two that would make my day at that point. LOL
Hey Bay or OC or someone how long is MCD’s contract???
    I need to know that!!!
    Please

  39. baylinorcrush says:

4 years, two to go after this one

  40. B.smith says:

I agree bay. I tried(when i was very very young) to change my x from who she was to something else…It didnt work and neither did we…My point is, if you have someone who is successful how they play, why would you want to change the way they play if you dont even know if theyre style will work in the NFL or not? Let him be who he is and see? If all else fails, you try to teach him a better way of doing thngs if his style doesnt work….

But until you atch and see that it doesnt, how do you know?

  41. casinoroyal19 says:

i said this a while back, and i will say it again tebows throwing motion will not hurt him as much as people think it will. thats all im gonna say though, cuz i dont wanna bring up an old topic that just starts a fight lol

  42. B.smith says:

They didnt think that Steve Young had good mechanics either and look what he did. I dont believe in all these critics anyway…to me…thats why they are in a booth or on the radio-because they didnt know what they were talking about….Why do people believe in these guys anyway? Glad Josh didnt cause he drafted TT…NOW USE HIM DANGIT!!!

  43. benbronco9 says:

    thanx for that!!!
So in reality I don’t think tebow will start a game for us this year.
As OC said he is buisy tinkering with Orton rite now after he realizes that we are not the Patriots and that he is not Belichick and that his leading the league in passing but not being able to run has failed he will start Grooming TT.
He is far too stubborn and egomaniac to start TT earlier than at the verry least the last few games of a like 6-10 season. Far too stubborn. LMAO
I also think that part of our running game weakness is that we and I stole this have Orton in the gun and don’t run a true power back set. You know the kind with a real 240 lb fullback leading through the hole instead of two tight ends. and ball snapped under center.
Also we do not have a speedy enough durrable back to make the shotgun run game work you need a one cut guy like Maurice jones drew.
Maroney definatly is not that and if Moreno could get close to being that kind of back he is hardly durable enogh.

  44. socalbigbroncofan says:

    b. smith what i hold on to is that no matter what happens im still a fan. and no matter how much i complain on this blog it doesnt matter. mcd is going to do what he wants. and u have to be kidding when u say the ravens arent that good. this team has shown they can win and they can win. especially on the road. and how many games did anybody watch today besides ours. because right now its really hard to tell whats going on. look at all the upsets today. we all heard” on any given sunday, anything can happen”. and i am a huge Tebow fan but he’s not ready. Orton is doing great with the O line we have and no running game. but it doesnt help to test our running game agianst the good defenses lately and next week. so take a huge deep breath calm down. and lets see what happens.

  45. B.smith says:

Its true…ego gets in the way of smarts….Happens to us all. But most especially with guys who are given the keys to a billion dollar football team at the young age of 32…I can remember when i was 32…i probably wouldnt have listened to anyone either…And would have done things my way, to prove that it would work. Sad….

But he should look at it this way…justify your pick of Tebow by playing him! Prove everone wrong and that he will be a great player and that you are just the one to do it!!!

  46. Broncosfolife88 says:

    You know sometimes i wonder if any of you guys have ever even played football. All this Tebow over Orton crud get over it, Orton has been amazing this year and has done his jobthis game came down to no production from again from the running backs and the defense not stopping the run not to mention that we were on a second road game in a place that it is hard to win period. And last week when the game came down to it the Ball was put on Orton shoulders we won. Orton has been one of the best QB’s in the league so far this season. Tim Tebow is nobodyh at this point I would be mad if a change was made to him. Orton is our best option and that says alot especially the way hes played. He hasnt recieved any run support and the defense got plowed. thats what makes me mad is that the defense still isnt up to par. one week were on fire the next we get ripped apart. heres what it comes down to during this first stretch;

Orton- consistently has put up the numbers to keep us in a position to win.
the run game inconstant in all phases period.
WR’s- great in most phases but lose focus in the red area ie inconsistency
Offensive line- great in pass protecrion, no physical domination in the run (young guys not sure where they stand yet) ie inconsistant
Defense-With goody out a young kid in Perrish getting beat but still showing good promise (Champ as always consistent) LB’s not getting in on the run enough allowing too many holes for the run defense, no pass rush to speak of with out Dumervil ie inconsistancy
Special teams-Not providing a spark on returns of any sort. Prater very good however ie inconsistancy
You know when I played it was all about playing consistantly through the game funny thing is tho that the the position i am hearing so much about is the position that i am seeing as being the most consistant and what is that position??????? KYLER ORTON WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT PUTTING UP THE NUMBERS AND PLAYING TO KEEP US IN A POSITION TO WIN. Football is a team sport when only one player is playin consistant then you Cant Win.
I’m not tryin to be a jerk about this but come on you guys have to see what i am seeing

  47. Broncosfolife88 says:

    Socal I hear ya

  48. socalbigbroncofan says:

im tired of fans saying mcd is doing it the patriot way or this is not the patriots. he was the patriot way. he was in charge when they had that fantastic offense the last time they went to the super bowl and thats what hes doing here. he gets a lot of these players from new england because he worked with them before. so the transition is easy. im not saying there perfect and some might not be the best choices. but it is what it is.

  49. baylinorcrush says:

socal, agreed totally about the Ravens being a good team, in fact they are my pick to win the SB, Flacco is just coming into his own and he has weapons EVERYWHERE, and their D, well it doesn’t get much better than Baltimore D. The thing I don’t see you addressing and that actually probably bothers me as much as anyhting in this game is our supposedly revamped D allowing 233 yards on the ground!!! a deja vu of gigantic proportion to last year collapse, I don’t care how well we do anywhere else, if we can’t stop teams from running the ball on us they will own us, just like today.

  50. olderthandirt says:

i really dont like to bang on the players because the really are playing there hearts out each and every game so i wont but our coaching staff both off. and def. was an embarrassment.they lost this game
