Broncos at Ravens: Second Half Blog

October 10th, 2010 - 12:42pm by Eric Detweiler

Q3 15:00: Both teams are back on the field. The opening kick of the second half, which the Broncos will receive, is coming shortly.

Q3 14:59: Eddie Royal is back deep to take Cundiff’s kick off. He broke it out to his own 35-yard line after taking it near the goal line. That’s where the Broncos offense will take over. Orton continues his hot end to the first half with a 25-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd. Laurence Maroney ran for three yards on first down. On second down, Orton fired incomplete. His third down pass for Dan Gronkowski fell incomplete and the Broncos punted. Colquitt’s punt bounced inside the Ravens 20 and bounced backward and out of bounds at the Ravens 22-yard line. It’s a 15-yard punt.

Q3 13:11: Ray Rice started the Ravens first possession of the second half with a 3-yard run. On second down, Rice picked up 9 yards and a first down. Flacco then misfired for Heap before hitting Derrick Mason for a 17-yard gain along the sideline. After a run and a short completion, Flacco hit Houshmandzadeh for a completion past the first down marker. However there were offsetting penalties on the play and they’ll replay the down. This time, Flacco misfired for Mason, and Baltimore will punt. The Ravens had a chance to down Sam Koch’s punt inside the 5-yard line but it fell in the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q3 9:42: On first down, Orton hit Lloyd for a 14-yard gain and a quick first down. Andre Brown took the first down handoff and lost a yard. On second down, Buckhalter lost another yard when Terrell Suggs dragged him down in the backfield. Before third-and-12, the Broncos took a false start penalty. On third-and-17, Gronkowski made a 9-yard catch. It’s the longest catch of his career but not enough for a first down. Colquitt came out to punt and hit a 46-yard punt. After a 10-yard return by Chris Carr, the Ravens will start at their own 28-yard line. David Bruton was shaken up on the play.

Q3 6:46: Rice picked up three yards on first down. On second down, Rice gained 4 more yards, setting up third-and-3. A screen pass to Rice gained five yards and a first down. On the ensuing snap, the Broncos had 12-men on the field. The Ravens now have a 1st-and-5. Willis McGahee picked up 10 yards and a first down on the run. On the ensuing first down, McGahee gained 3 yards. On second down, Perrish Cox knocked a pass away from Derrick Mason. Flacco escaped the rush on third down, picking up just enough for a first down with a stretch. Mason grabbed a 10-yard completion on the ensuing play for another first down at the Broncos 24-yard line.

Q3 1:20: Two runs, by Rice and McClain, moved the chains for the Ravens again. On the next play, Rice picked up 9 yards and followed that up with a 3-yard run for a first down, setting up first-and-goal at the 2-yard line as the third quarter ended.

Q4 15:00: On the first play of the final quarter, McClain blasted to the 1-yard line. On second down, Rice got in for his second touchdown of the game. The run capped a 14-play, 72-yard drive that chewed more than seven minutes off the game clock. After Cundiff’s extra point, the Ravens lead 24-7 with 14:21 left in the game.

RAVENS 24, BRONCOS 7

Q4 14:21: Cundiff’s kick went through the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos start at their own 20-yard line again.

Q4 14:20: Orton began the drive by hitting Gaffney for an 8-yard gain and then a 5-yard gain, before finding Eddie Royal for 13 yards and Graham for 28 yards. After a 7-yard pass for Gaffney, Orton is now 5-for-5 on the drive. On the ensuing play from the Baltimore 19-yard line, Orton couldn’t find Lloyd. Matt Prater is on to try a 38-yard field goal. The kick is good to cut into Baltimore’s lead with 11:50 left. It was an 8-play, 61-yard drive.

BRONCOS 24, RAVENS 10

Q4 11:50: Josh Wilson returned Prater’s kick to the 20-yard line, but a holding penalty means the Ravens will start from their own 10-yard line. Rice broke a 12-yard run on the first play of the possession. The running back picked up 1-yard on the next play and 3 yards on the next. The Broncos used a timeout before the third-and-6 play.

Q4 9:49: Flacco hit Ray Rice for a 7-yard gain and a first down. The Ravens have first-and-10 from their own 33-yard line. Rice picked up 3 yards on the next play. Brian Dawkins is shaken up on the play.

Q4 9:00: On second down, Rice scampered for 5 yards, bringing up third down. Rice ran for 13 yards and a first down. On the next set of downs, Rice had a pair of short runs, picking up a total of 4 yards, bringing up third-and-6. The Ravens converted that on a Flacco pass to Le’Ron McClain and on the next play, Willis McGahee burst off the right side and scored a 30-yard touchdown. Cundiff’s extra point puts the Ravens up 31-10.

***INJURY UPDATE***: Brian Dawkins has a knee injury. He will not return.

RAVENS 31, BRONCOS 10

Q4 5:06: Cundiff’s kick again sails to the back of the end zone and Royal just takes a knee. The Broncos start at their own 20-yard line. Orton can’t hit Lloyd on first down. On second down, a short pass to Buckhalter gained 12 yards. A pass to Gaffney picked up 5 more yards on the next play before an intentional grounding penalty put them back 10 yards. On third-and-15, Orton and Lloyd couldn’t connect and the Broncos will punt.

Q4 4:05: Colquitt’s 33-yard punt sailed out of bounds and the Ravens will take over at their own 40-yard line. On first down, McGahee picked up 5 yards, and on second down, he got 5 more for another first down. On first down from midfield, McGahee got 2 yards. McGahee got the call again on the next play, picking up 5 more yards before the Broncos used their second timeout.

Q4 2:07: On third-and-2, the Ravens were flagged for holding. On the ensuing play, McGahee picked up 6 yards, setting up a fourth-and-6 at the two-minute warning.

Q4 1:58: Eddie Royal faircaught Sam Koch’s punt at the 10-yard line. That’s where the Broncos take over. On first down, Orton’s pass for Lloyd was nearly picked off by Josh Wilson. The Broncos picked up 31 yards on a pass interference penalty drawn by Brandon Lloyd. Orton followed with an incompletion and then an 8-yard completion to Gaffney. On third-and-2, Royal pulled in a 7-yard catch and a first down. On the ensuing play, Lloyd reeled in a 44-yard touchdown pass in between a pair of defenders. That’s a 5-play, 90-yard drive. Matt Prater adds the extra point to cut the deficit to 31-17 with 35 seconds left.

RAVENS 31, BRONCOS 17

Q4 0:35: The Broncos lined up for an onside kick attempt. Prater’s attempt bounced high in the air and T.J. Houshmandzadeh grabbed it for the Ravens. Flacco takes a knee to end the game.

The Ravens win 31-17, improving to 4-1 this season and dropping Denver to 2-3. That’s all from M&T Bank Stadium. The Broncos return to action next week when they host the New York Jets.

Well if you arent entertained, is it worth it? Is it worth your time if you know it isnt going to be competitive and at least fight to be the best?

Isnt that what these blogs are all about? Getting things sorted out, and answers to questions we may want answered?

  6. 07elway says:

I watch it because I love the game. My dad raised me on football and being born in Denver, from day 1 the Broncos have had my support. I’ve always loved football… and regardless how bad or great Denver plays, I will die a Broncos fan. I’ll stick with them through the ugliest of games, even if I knew ahead of time the game wouldn’t be competitive. I’m not saying it doesn’t aggravate me… any football fan would be annoyed, aggravated, frustrated & just plain furious if their team didn’t come out with their hearts on their sleeves and fight out a win. But at the end of the day, I love this team and this game and I’ll watch it anyway.

  7. socalbigbroncofan says:

your just a hater. unfourtunely on our team. i can handle but com on bro. get with it. its a good thing your not our coach. hey nothing personal i just dont care for the negativity.

  8. B.smith says:

Sorry to say that today they played like a bunch of overpaid premadonnas….who dont have pride enough to fight for their own dignity in front of thousands of fans…sad…Wheres the fight in them?

A word of advice B.smith, this is your very first time blogging on this site, and you have been going hard at it non stop for hours now. A lot of folks here have been here for months or even years, most know eachother well and you just need to slow down take a deep breath and mellow out with the onslaught on our team, you will have a much better shot at having a long fulfilling blogging adventure here, the way you are going at it is just plain too overwhelming for many, trust me you wanna make friends here, not enemies, just my two cents, been here a very long time.

  11. B.smith says:

Oh no, not a hater…cause all week i will be waiting in antiipation as i always have for the next weeks game, hoping that they at least play with some class and pride…Wearing my bronco gear as i have for the past 26 years….Its just frustrating to see a team that could play a LOT better-tougher than they have, and yet, cant muster enough pride to lay it all on the line and do it?

Tired of getting beat by the good teams and not making the games at least competitive…Being down at the end of the first quarter every game(agains good teams) is a downer and watching them continue to shoot themselves in the foot is painful to watch.

  12. 07elway says:

    B. smith – I don’t know where their fight went. If I knew, I’d smack them in the face with it. But realize this… Baltimore’s defense has been a high-energy, very hard to breach defense. If you are gonna talk like that, then you go to Baltimore and gut out a win. You act like the rest of us Bronco fans don’t care, maybe some don’t but you’re barking up the wrong tree over here. It kills me they didn’t fight as hard today as I had hoped they would, they let the adversity get the best (should say worst of them). It bugs me they have so many problems to work out, and it seems like they never can catch a break. Things just went downhill after Doom got injured. They need to face the adversity put in front of them. You’re frustrated… dude, you’re not the only one. But I’m not going to let it eat me up. Guess you haven’t gotten my message – have some faith in this team. If they don’t have the support of their loyal fans, why fight at all?? They don’t need your negativity and I sure as heck don’t want to hear it. Yeah, yeah, yeah “you’re just being realistic”, I’ve heard that story a time or two on here. I am “realistic” about this team’s future but I’m not a Debbie-downer either. I have my team and I’m stickin’ with them.

But again, no matter how ugly it gets… I am a born & raised Bronco fan. I bleed Bronco Orange & Blue.

  13. B.smith says:

Not trying to make enemies, why would i? But when someone calls me a hater, im going to defend what is being said of me? Love the team-always will. Through thick and thin…but doesnt mean i like the direction they are going. And IMO-EVERYONES voices should be heard as you told me so eloquantly earlier in the day…

  14. B.smith says:

No, we dont need it on here and i do apologizi if i offended anyone-where we do need it tho is on the field-and that isnt happening….

  15. 07elway says:

I never called you hater and I’m not trying to start anything either. But you’re speaking out of frustration and I get it. We’re all frustrated but you better watch what you say on here. One word sets off a firestorm. I get where you’re coming from and to some point, I agree. They need to fight for wins, play like they want to be here, play like they love the game. They got upstaged by a very good team today in their house and while that’s no excuse for playing like we did today, it is a factor to consider. I would have loved nothing more than to beat the Ravens on the road, but its not that simple.

Sometimes it takes a loss like this to a good team to get their act together. I can only hope it will wake them up.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

    Tough loss.

Some of you guys are so week to week it’s hilarious.

Say next week we shut out the jets? We would be singing praises and talking super bowl. Everyone needs to chill. After one bad game peeps come outta the wood work ranting. I find it amusing.

It ain’t no lie, the ravens are a quality team and could very well win the superbowl. I believe there are the most complete team in the NFL. If you look at the big picture, we have one of the best qb’s right now. Orton dropped 300 yards and 2 td’s on the best pass d in the league. We just gotta work things out with the run both offensively and defensively. Next week we play the jets. They will have a short week and will probably be coming off a win. It would be the perfect opportunity to snatch a win.

We are a good team. We just gotta be more consistent.

  18. samoanbronco says:

Great to see our running game improving every game

  19. Shaver87 says:

Well this loss rests on the coaches definitly didnt prepare the team for this one. Not a good game plan at all for the defense. The first like 3 drives they drove all the way down the field on us. I still have hope though our next 2 games are at home and nobody is really running away with the division.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

samoan, LMAO…. Yeah we doubled last week output, from 19 to 39 yards, awesome, haha.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

For the ones interested the results of the friendly pick contest were posted on this blog at 4:12pm yesterday.

  22. Yovi21 says:

Sloppy, Sloppy, Sloppy. its like Orton said “You cant even beat a college team if its 3rd and 20 or 3rd and 25 80% of the time.” eliminate the stupid mistakes and we might take this game, but its ok learn from these losses and fix your mistakes; come back next week looking for a big match-up with the jets! we are almost through the meat of our schedule and then its oakland and the 49ers! hopefully at the very worst we are 4-4 at the bye, that way I feel we can come out and blow up the second half of this year!

Does anyone know the status of Demaryius or Dawk, I wanna know if their injuries are as severe as they looked, and I’m starting my own personal campaign of Take Demaryius off of KR! haha

  23. brian_schneider says:

I was really disappointed to see Thomas get hurt on that kickoff return. It was like 7 yards deep, why even try taking it out of the endzone. The first one was more shallow in the endzone than that one and he took a knee. It is quite funny how our two first round picks really haven’t had any type of impact yet. Sure, Thomas had a couple of nice returns against TEN. I’d rather see him in the receiving game than in the return game. I haven’t heard an update on his injury but now what, he’s going to miss more time probably. I’m really getting frustrated with our lack of a running game. Orton still had a good game but we need a win. That’s all the sports people can talk about is Orton has such great numbers. I’m sure he’d be the first to tell you they don’t mean anything unless you win. I’m getting sick and tired of this BS. Quite frankly I’m getting really pissed off at McD. He keeps saying “we need offensive balance” yet he doesn’t put any emphasis on the running game. Maroney looks like he takes forever to get to the LOS after the handoff, then he needs to dance around. What happened to Buck, he was pretty decent last year and Brown, well he was ineffective. I don’t know if it is the young line or the scheme, but we need to get this $#!* figured out. Doesn’t help when your offensive line has drive killing penalties. I sure hope we can put a W up this week.

I guess on the bright side, we didn’t lose to the Raiders like those sissy Chargerettes. LOL!!!

    Go Broncos!!!!

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Ready or not, time for the Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

    The Good

    On O:

Let’s start with the Orton to Lloyd TD before the half, considering the implication of the play, having us go in at halftime down only ten points if we score and with some kind of momentum going into the second half, that throw and catch was one of the greatest I have ever had the pleasure to watch in my Bronco life, as funny as it may sound. That alone was worth the price of admission. And the second one was cool, even so it was trash time by then, no biggie.

Gaffney with 9 catches came to the rescue when Orton couldn’t connect to Lloyd because that #31 nightmare was all over him the entire first half, then McD realized that as they were playing zone D, if he sent Lloyd deep he was then covered by the deeper guy and Lloyd started making plays, he also moved him from the left side of the field where that #31 was roaming to the right side and Lloyd also had success there. So good adjustments there even so it took like forever to take place. As usual with McD, better late than never, or too little too late, make your pick.

Royal started out hot while Lloyd was smothered.

Finally a deep long catch by a TE, Graham was deeper than the WR on the route, 28 yards.

    On D:

The first goal line stand mainly by DJ on two of the downs, absolutely smelled the plays and showed great athletic abilities to shut it down, should of been a huge momentum swing for us after that first long drive of theirs, but then they went on with another drive just as long, and another, and another, well you get the idea.

The Dawkins dislodging of the ball collision, totally legal and it probably is still rattling the bejesus out of Mason I think as we speak.

    On St:

Can’t think of anything other than the two KO returns produced good yards, Colquitt and Prater were mainly good, and the coverage was improved, but nothing really good standing out overall.

    The Bad

Well this could go on and on, and a lot of it was already said last night, so I’ll keep the dirty laundry to a generic bunch of stuff we were bad at, like mainly the game preparation by McD, first and foremost responsible whenever his troops are not ready to fight the fight for him. Did the Bailey thing have an adverse effect on the team? I’m not going down that road, since when I bring up stuff like that some bloggers here take exception and tell me what the heck would I now about how the morale of the players is, so rest easy folks, everything is still fine and dandy in fantasy land, every player loves McD to pieces and the only reason they played with no intensity overall yesterday is simply because they had a bad day, LOL. Happy now?

But we were also bad at so many things, like penalties (10 of them), the TOP (23:43 to 36:17), the running game (39 yards), the stopping the run thing (allowed 233 yds), the no real QB pressure (no sacks), the O line not doing protection or opening up running lanes well at all and overall a D allowing 415 yards against an O that had been a very small yard producing machine so far. This game looked so much like the worse games after the mid season collapse of last year it isn’t even funny, at least it scares me way more than many of you optimists.

    The Ugly:

That one to me goes to McD for giving up on a game with over 4 minutes to go on 4th and 15 from our own end down 10-31. Let’s just punt the ball, this is probably like college where it matters in the standings if a team runs up a score on another, are you kidding me? I can honestly say I have never felt so utterly hopeless watching a Bronco game as when McD threw in the towel there. So what if we don’t make a first down, worse thing that can happen is they score again, would that be too embarrassing for you coach, so embarrassing that it blinds you of the only reason we play this game, to win. And you orange kool aid guys think everything is fine between the players and McD, what a joke, how can any player have any respect fof their coach when he lays down on a game, what are these football players playing for, the coach’s pride?

That’s all folks, I wanted to take it easy on everybody, because the bad and ugly could of been a paperback issue this week.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

That being said I agree that we played an impossible game to win Sunday, considering I have the Ravens winning the SB this year and us going 9-7, so a loss to the Ravens doesn’t change anyhting, but what it does is that the way in which they lost it makes it very difficult to get up for the next team on our radar, the Jets, who bring in even more pressure on the QB if that’s possible and are arguably maybe the most complete team in this league. Bottom line is if we can pull that one off, as some of you think, they will have definitely exceeded my expectations for the first six games, where I have them a 2-4, so 3-3 would be awesome, but it’s a mountain of a climb to get there and unfortunatley I’m not convinced McD can get his troops to buy onto whatever it will take to climb it, trouble in paradise is on the horizon in my view as you well know, but plenty of time to straighten it out, but that’s not McD’s forte, so, well, we split these two road games so this was a good road trip actually, I’ll give them that, but tough latest beat down to get up from is what they are faced with now.

  26. baylinorcrush says:

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but even so we have not played a division game yet, it is now getting clearer and clearer that we are putting ourselves in a gigantic hole as far as getting a playoff spot with a wildcard since our three losses are all to AFC foes, Jacks, Colts and Ravens. The only way to get in will be winning the division, you can count the wildcard option out, that’s my take on that.

  27. Broncosfolife88 says:

I said my piece last night but I will say this in response to Bay. I dont understand how you can speak towards the moreale of players and their belief in McDaniels of all the bloggers on here I figured you would leave that alone. What happens in a locker room has never been something anyone outside of can really speak on. I had a coach give up on a game like that and I’ll tell you the next week we had never played so hard I just dont agree with speaking on internal things like that is all how can we assume what happens in the hearts and minds of other people, just sayin ya know what I mean. By the way love your breakdown, if I get a chance I will put one out too.

  28. dcftcollins says:

no passion no intensity no running game no inteligece in game plan or game calling the team and coach looked like they were asleep very disapointed in whole team from front office to water boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. baylinorcrush says:

88, that’s the philosopher in me, I can’t help it, I always like to look at things deeper than just the obvious x’s and o’s, because often the reason for success or defeat lays hidden under the surface and is not only about the plays on the field, don’t mean to upset anyone by digging deep, if I smell trouble I’ll go dig it out.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

And thanks for taking the time to say you liked my breakdown, it wasn’t all for nothing then.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

Seems like I’m not the only one thinking there may be problems in the locker room, Woody said there was plenty of it going around early Summer between Orton and McD and now this DP blogger is making a good point after this game:

Here’s what Denver Post poster “Bullet Bob” had to say after reading Mark Kiszla’s column on the Broncos’ loss:

“For the first time,” McDaniels admitted, ‘I thought our mental toughness was questioned.’

“Out of that whole article, this will be the downfall and eventual legacy of Coach McDaniels. You never question the hearts of the players in public you best believe that there will be turmoil in the locker room after the beating that the Broncos took this weekend and by the comment Coach McD made.

Hard to argue with cold facts, McD is not a people person, and a non people person as a HC is a tough riddle to solve, just saying.
