Broncos at Jaguars: Second Half Blog

September 12th, 2010 - 12:32pm by Gray Caldwell

KICKOFF: Matt Prater is out to kick off to the Jaguars after the Broncos received to start the game.

Q3 15:00 Tiquan Underwood takes Prater’s kickoff out to the Jacksonville 47-yard line, where the Jaguars will start the second half. David Garrard hands off to Maurice Jones-Drew, who picks up a handful of yards before being taken down. On second-and-6 in Denver territory, Jones-Drew takes another handoff for a first down. The following play is another Jones-Drew carry, and the back picks up 2 yards. Second-and-8 brings a pitch to Jones-Drew, and he’s taken down after a 2-yard gain. There’s a flag on the play — offsides on Justin Bannan — negating the play and making it second-and-3 on the Denver 32-yard line. On the next play, Rashad Jennings picks up the remaining yards for a first down.

Q3 11:35 A 15-yard run by Jennings gives Jacksonville a first-and-10 at the Denver 11-yard line. On the next play, Jones-Drew tries to find the sideline, but he’s brought down after a gain of a yard. On second down, Garrard finds Marcedes Lewis for a 10-yard touchdown, the second scoring connection between the two on the day. Josh Scobee’s extra point is up and in, giving the Jaguars a seven-point lead. Just a quick update on the temperature at the start of the second half — it’s 93 degrees with a heat index of 105.

JAGUARS 14, BRONCOS 7

Q3 10:43 Perrish Cox fields the kickoff in the end zone, taking a knee for a touchback. On first down at the 20-yard line, Kyle Orton hands off to Knowshon Moreno, who cuts back against the grain to pick up a quick yard. Second down brings a pass from Orton to Dan Gronkowski for a gain of another 2 yards. That makes it third-and-7, and Orton lines up in the shotgun. He takes the snap, drops back and finds Eddie Royal, who sprints for the first down — a gain of 9.

Q3 8:43 Moreno takes a carry for 3 yards on first down. Second down brings a fake handoff and a pass from Orton that’s tipped at the line by Jeremy Mincey. That makes it third-and-7 at the 35-yard line. Orton is sacked again. On fourth down, Colquitt is in to punt, and he kicks it to the opposite 25-yard line. Returner Mike Thomas is downed after a 5-yard gain.

Q3 7:38 Champ Bailey is right there to stop a play from developing behind the line of scrimmage on first down — a loss of one. On second down, Bailey nearly picks off a pass intended for Mike Sims-Walker, getting a hand in to break up the pass. On third-and-11, Garrard has time in the backfield and fires to Thomas near the first-down marker. The refs are coming out for a measurement — and the ball is short. Jacksonville’s offense stays in the game on fourth-and-1 at its own 39-yard line. Before the play is run, Head Coach Josh McDaniels throws out his red challenge flag, challenging the spot of the ball. But apparently since Jacksonville didn’t get a first down, McDaniels can’t challenge how far away it was from a first down. Jones-Drew lines up and takes the carry on fourth down — and he’s stuffed by the Broncos defense, led by D.J. Williams. After the turnover on downs, the offense takes over at the spot — the Jacksonville 39-yard line.

Q3 6:06 The Broncos offense is back on the field, and first down is a fake handoff to Moreno and a quick pass from Orton, which he fired between a handful of Jaguars defenders into the arms of Gaffney for a first down. On the ensuing play, Moreno takes a handoff through a big hole on the right side of the line thanks to blocks from Stanley Daniels and Spencer Larsen, juking defenders for 17 yards. On first-and-goal at the 8-yard line, Orton fires quickly toward Brandon Lloyd, who fell on the play. Pass interference is called on Derek Cox, and the Broncos have the ball at the 1-yard line.

Q3 4:44: Jacksonville is challenging that the pass was tipped before the pass interference penalty, which would mean the contact was legal. After the challenge, the ruling on the field stands, and Denver has a first-and-goal at the 1. Moreno is stopped for no gain on first down. On second down, the second-year back takes it in for the touchdown. Prater’s extra point is up and in, tying the game at 14.

BRONCOS 14, JAGUARS 14

Q3 4:07: Prater’s kickoff sails about 6 yards into the end zone, but Underwood takes it out anyway. It turns out to be a good decision, as he gets out to the Jacksonville 47-yard line. A false start penalty before first down moves the ball back five yards, setting up first-and-15 at the 42. Garrard rolls to his right on the ensuing play, firing a pass that Brian Dawkins saw coming the whole way, and the veteran safety leaps to swat it out of the air. On second-and-15, Garrard lines up in the shotgun. He hands off to Jones-Drew, who is tackled after a gain of 4. Third-and-11 brings a pass from Garrard to Thomas for a first down, but there’s a flag on the play — illegal use of hands on Andre’ Goodman. The penalty is declined, and Jacksonville has a first down at the Denver 34-yard line after the 20-yard gain.

Q3 2:41: Kevin Vickerson gets involved on the next play, bringing down Jones-Drew at the line of scrimmage. On second-and-10, Garrard is nearly sacked by Ayers, but he gets off the pass to Zach Miller as he’s brought to the ground. The 2-yard gain makes it third-and-8 at the 32-yard line, and Garrard is in the shotgun. The quarterback finds Jones-Drew, but D.J. Williams is in hot pursuit, tackling the running back short of the first down. Josh Scobee is in to attempt a 45-yard field goal on fourth down. The kick is nearly blocked by Nate Jones, but it’s up and in to give the Jaguars the lead.

JAGUARS 17, BRONCOS 14

Q3 0:45: The rain has started pouring down, and the stands are rapidly emptying. Scobee’s kickoff sails out of the back of the end zone for a touchback, and Denver will take over at its own 20-yard line. Orton hands off to Moreno for a 2-yard gain on first down, which brings the third quarter to a close. Daniel Graham leads a sprint to the opposite side of the field, ready to start the fourth frame.

Q4 15:00: The game has been suspended due to lightning. We’ll check the radar. We’ve been told the delay is expected to last 15 minutes.

WEATHER UPDATE: We’ve been told that the players will be back on the field in approximately 10 minutes, at which point there will be a 10-minute warmup session before the game resumes.

The two teams are back on the field, running around and getting loose. The rain is still pouring down, but we haven’t seen lightning in a little while.

The rain is letting up, and the reprieve from the sun has lowered the temperature to 78 degrees — down from 93 at the start of the second half. The heat index has dropped from 105 to 80. It looks like play is about to resume.

Q4 14:59: The fans that have made their way back to their seats are getting loud as the Broncos line up for a second-and-8 at their own 22-yard line. Orton lines up in the shotgun and quickly lofts a pass downfield to Lloyd, who dives to make the reception. Jacksonville is challenging the play, however.

Q4 14:33: The pass is ruled complete, meaning Jack Del Rio has used two challenges and lost both — he’s out of challenges for the remainder of the game. On the ensuing first down, Moreno takes a carry forward for 5 yards. On second-and-10 at the Jacksonville 46-yard line, Correll Buckhalter picks up a yard on a carry. On third-and-4, Orton lines up in the shotgun. The quarterback looks downfield, feels the pressure and scrambles forward out of the pocket, diving for the first down.

Q4 12:58: Denver calls its first timeout of the second half. Afterwards, on first-and-10 at the Jacksonville 40-yard line, Orton hands off to Buckhalter, who tries to find the sideline — but he’s brought down for no gain. On second down, Orton lines up in the shotgun. He fires a pass intended for Buckhalter that’s tipped into the air by Derrick Harvey before falling incomplete. On third-and-10, the crowd that’s left at EverBank is on its feet. Orton drops back into the shotgun but there’s a delay of game penalty on the offense. Third-and-15 brings a quick screen pass to Eddie Royal, who is brought down at the 36-yard line. Matt Prater jogs out to attempt a 54-yard field goal. It’s up and in, tying the game. The kicker is now 8-of-10 on 50-plus yard field goals in his career.

BRONCOS 17, JAGUARS 17

Q4 11:13: Underwood fields Prater’s kickoff and doesn’t get back to the 20-yard line before being taken down by Spencer Larsen and a gang of Broncos. On first-and-10 at the 17-yard line, Jones-Drew grabs a quick screen pass and picks up 2 yards, but there’s a flag on the play. It’s a personal foul on Ryan McBean for a facemask, pushing the ball up to the 34-yard line. On the ensuing first down, Jones-Drew finds the sideline and picks up 8 yards on a carry.

Q4 10:13: Jones-Drew stays on his feet and picks up a first down — but there’s a flag on the play. It’s a facemask on Ryan McBean again. Now the ball is at the Denver 35-yard line, where Rashad Jennings is brought down for no gain on a first-down carry. On second-and-10, Robert Ayers is there to make the tackle on a quick pass to Mike Thomas — a gain of 7 yards. On third-and-3 at the 28-yard line, Garrard scrambles forward for a first down. Dawkins is there with a big hit at the end — and the safety’s helmet flies off.

Q4 7:59: Garrard connects with Kassim Osgood for a touchdown, and the receiver is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after the score. The 15-yard penalty will be assessed on the kickoff. Scobee’s extra point is up and in, and the Jaguars retake the lead.

JAGUARS 24, BRONCOS 17

Q4 7:49: Due to the penalty, Perrish Cox ends up fielding the ball just inside the 20-yard line. He finds the sideline and gets out to the Denver 43-yard line. On the ensuing first down, Orton launches a pass deep toward Lloyd, who makes the catch but lands out of bounds. On second down, Orton lines up in the shotgun and fires another deep pass to Lloyd as he’s drilled in the backfield. The receiver dives under the ball for a 25-yard gain. On the Jacksonville 32-yard line, Orton hands off to Moreno, who sprints forward for an 11-yard gain. On first-and-10 at the 21-yard line, Moreno is stopped for a loss of a yard.

Q4 5:49: On second-and-11, Orton lines up in the shotgun. He avoids pressure and takes off before sliding at about the 14-yard line. That brings up third-and-3. The crowd is loud as Orton drops back into the shotgun. He throws a pass that’s tipped at the line, and the offense stays on the field. Before the play can be run, Jacksonville calls a timeout — its third and final of the second half.

Q4 4:47: The offense is on the field on fourth-and-3 at the Jacksonville 14-yard line. Orton lines up in the shotgun and takes the snap. He finds Lloyd in the corner of the end zone, and the receiver makes the catch. He’s ruled out of bounds, however, and Lloyd is down after the play. He runs back to the sideline under his own power. It’s a turnover on downs.

Q4 4:41: Jones-Drew takes a first-down carry 6 yards, and Jacksonville lets the clock run down as far as it can. The running back picks up a first down on the next carry. The clock continues to run as Jones-Drew takes another handoff. This one goes for a gain of 3. On second-and-7, Jones-Drew is taken down after a gain of a yard. Denver calls its second timeout of the half.

Q4 2:23: On third-and-6, Garrard tries to scramble for the first down, but he’s brought down short of the marker to bring up fourth down as the clock winds down to the two-minute warning.

Q4 2:00: The crowd is dancing to “Sweet Home Alabama” right now. I thought that was a rival to this typically pro-Florida Gators crowd? Afterward, Perrish Cox takes Podlesh’s punt to the 23-yard line. On first down, Orton quickly passes to Royal for a 2-yard gain. The next play is a pass from Orton deep to Lloyd, who has a first down but he’s in the middle of the field and the clock continues to run. The offense hurries back to the line with about a minute left in the game. Orton drops back into the shotgun on first-and-10 at the 36-yard line and launches deep toward Jabar Gaffney, but the pass is nearly intercepted.

Q4 0:53: On second-and-10, Orton fires for an interception, and No. 52 Daryl Smith slides to give the Jacksonville offense the ball and effectively end the game. Garrard takes a knee twice and the game is over — the Jaguars win, 24-17, and the Broncos start the season 0-1. The team is back at INVESCO Field at Mile High next week to take on the Seattle Seahawks in the regular-season home opener.

I am so tired of the play calling that McDaniels chooses. The conservative nature of his play calling and the attempt to “trick” everyone is overplayed. I like what I see when we spread the offense and take shots down field. In the last 40 seconds of the second quarter, Kyle Orton and receivers were brilliant. Orton reminded me of Manning on that drive. I would like to see more of that, especially with a QB who has no speed and does not react to the blitz very well. It’s simply understanding the strengths of your talent. Orton needs to be in Shotgun and throw the rock. Besides the INT he played well. I would of like to see him make a better decision on 4th and 3. Get the first down then score.

The O-line was horrible this game. Harris not being in the game is a huge hole and void to fill. Harris being healthy will resolve a lot of issues for Orton. With time and experience I am sure Beadles will improve, however that needs to happen fast.

Defense, what can I say? Here goes. Ayers kept getting beat outside and sealed off, its his responsibility to make sure he turns every play back inside, no one should get outside of him. Again hardly any push from the D line, at least there was one sack. Bad tackling at times and the inability to shut down the run. Not enough was done in the off season to address these issues in my opinion. There were some important stops made today, however there needs to be more consistency from our D.

Denver Lost to an inferior team today. Injuries are a huge reason there was not a better product on the field today for the Broncos. I for one will not let one game decide the outcome of the year, as for me it matters how you finish the season rather than how it starts, look at last year, we were super bowl bound till week 6. :)

I do like what I see from Orton and the receivers thus far, just need to see better blocking up front, eliminate stupid penalties, consistency from the defense. One game does not make a season until your in the playoffs, Back at home next week against Seattle. Broncos will get their confidence back.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

Our improved special teams is really what did us in. Our Defense played as best as they could especially since they were playing against a short field most of the time. I give props to Lloyd and Moreno for their play. Especially Moreno considering he missed all of the preseason.

Our play calling was suspect at times and where was our 5 receiver set that was talked about so much? We can sit on here and act like Jim Mora with the Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda but the fact is we DIDN’T! So now it’s on to the next one and that’s the Peete Hawks

  3. 07elway says:

Well, go figure, we lose 1 game first of the season and I’m sure people on here are thinking its the end of the world. The previous comments I’m sure aren’t even worth reading so I won’t. However, this game we should’ve won it. I’ve always said this is a TEAM sport, I stand by that 110% but Ryan McBean’s 2 penalties did not help our cause. I honestly believe he helped out the Jags way too much and cost us the game. Its one thing to have 1 face mask penalty but to do it twice within in a matter of minutes is completely unacceptable. Dude should be in McD’s doghouse, no questions asked.

Overall though, we played great today. Plenty of mistakes to account for but we didn’t play so bad it was unbearable to watch. I’ve seen worse, we all have. Brandon Lloyd was awesome in the game & it just kills me that he had that last TD but his foot was partially out of bounds. That was our W right there. Could’ve got 6, go for a 2 point conversion and win it by one point. As for MJD, I say we kept control over him much better than we have in the past. A relief to see we didn’t let him run all over us for once. Orton was pretty solid, made some great passes. I think once Clady is truly 110% he will make the difference in our Oline… Beadles though is showing his true colors as a rookie. Experience will come with time. I’m anxious to see Syd’Quan Thompson get some play time soon, kid can run! Was fun to see Tebow out there for a few plays. :)

Everybody just needs to chill out. I hate it, absolutely hate it when fans lose their minds over the first game of the season. Yeah, I’m angry about this loss but gee whiz, don’t get your undies in a wad. First game of the season isn’t going to define our season. We have 2 home games we need to focus on. One game at a time. I’m proud of this team today. Piece of advice to McBean though – hands off the face masks.

Keep the faith Broncos Country… the season has only begun
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  4. caramelloo says:

What up Ash, how ya been? I think we will be fine and will be a reverse of the past few years. This year we may start of slow and then heat up late when it counts. Our run D was much improved bc according to the experts…. MJD was suppose to rush for 150+ on us.

We also have to realize that this is the 1st game with just about everyone back. The effort was there on Offense and Defense while Special Teams needs to work on maintaining their lanes.

  5. MileHighMonty says:

Well said 07Elway. Everybody calm down.

We saw some good things. Defense held Jones-Drew to under 100, Orton played smart, Lloyd was NASTY, and Moreno is going to be great if he can stay healthy.

But…our pass defense struggled (which surprised me), and our kick/punt coverage was pretty bad. Both of these things can be improved by next week.

Yes we should have won the game, but we’ve got 15 more to go!
(and if there’s football next year, then we would have 17 more to go!)

We aren’t “done.” I’m still flying my Broncos flag every week.

  6. strandoftds says:

To many penalty`s, ST gave up way to many yards. Over all it was a desent game for the Bronco`s. They have there work cut out for them. our corners gave up to many Td`s, but I believe they will get better. I got faith in my boys. It`s not over by a long shot. We`ll only get better and this is something to build on.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

The ones who probably aren’t calm are the ones who thought our first real challenge this season would come with the Colts game, how does that outlook feel now? LOL.

A bit of warning for this next game at home against the seahawks that we should easily win if I listen to those same dudes, the Hawks are up 28 to 6 or something on the niners and look good doing it, Pete Carrol will have them ready to play against us, don’t make the same stupid assumption again, just saying, one game at a time, they are all hard games, and no matter if you think your team is better than theirs their fans think the same thing about their team, it’s not ever easy to win in the NFL, no walk over like in College.

  8. Greatness007 says:

lol It’s funny how we had headset problems after the storm break. Listen to Jack Del Rio a sec ago. They had no problems. Things that make you say hmmm!!!

  9. 07elway says:

Hey caramel, I’m doing alright considering the ending to today’s game. lol I too have no doubt that we’ll be fine. This team is not going to let one game define their season. The first game of the season is nothing to freak out over. And actually if you think about it, it might be best for us to start off a little slow, gain some momentum and then just hit the rest of the season running hard. I have a very hard time believing these boys are gonna let this season go downhill again and end up 8-8. Maybe its just me but I’m convinced this team can and will do better than that. We are so above average. Its gonna hurt our D that Doom won’t be there but they can’t let that interfere with the season. There’s no “replacing” Doom, we all can agree on that but we have no choice to make the best of this season without him. And from what I saw today with our defense… well, it could’ve been a lot worse.

Like I said they made some mistakes, they have things to work on, things to get better at but this season has only started we WILL get better. I’m in agreement with you too MileHighMonty, well said yourself. I was very happy with how we held down MJD. Compare how we held him down today to the last time we played the Jags… I’d say huge improvement. Moreno was impressive considering he’s been out since the start of training camp. He’s just getting warmed up. I’m so proud of our boys, I’m still wearing my jersey. I mean its not like we played so bad like Oakland always does and got creamed. There’s your laugh for the day. We may have been disappointed but there’s always a bright side. Oakland never ceases to make me laugh, keep it up ‘ol Al! lol

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  10. baylinorcrush says:

    Klis reports:

“It’s still a long road ahead of us,” a somber Josh McDaniels, the Broncos coach, said as he walked toward his seat on the team bus. “We busted our butt to try and win this game today. But we’ve talked about our team not getting too high after a win or too low after a loss. We want to handle the emotions of a season better this year.”

Couldn’t agree more, why don’t you show the example and control your emotions better game time, don’t get too high, don’t get too low, you are the leader, you need to show the players the correct way, the even keel under control way, not the helter skelter foul mouth way you are doing it now, just my advice, for whatever it’s worth.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Well, Shanahan is about to get the Skins underway, gotta check that out, won’t be any swearing on the sidelines there, that much I know….

  12. sndvl says:

1 sack is not gonna get the job done. Cmon wink, where’s the aggressive play calling? It looked not much different than what I saw in the preseason. Not to happy about McBeans drive. Penalties killed us. And bucks fumble was unfortunate. But we lost this game on special teams. There was nothing special about our kickoff coverage. Better start preparing for Seattle, because those boys played some ball today and thrashed a good team.
I’m not even gonna start on McD….

On a positive, we remained relatively heathly.
Let’s get the rest of em healthy!

    GO BRONCOS 2K10

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Unfortunately football has nothing to do with who was the better team, but who found a way to win, something we have done only two times in the last 11 regular season games now.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

It’s official, the world is upside down in Washington, Shanny now has a crappy O and a great D !?!?!?!?!

  15. SBXXXII..Iwzthr! says:

TWO back to back face-mask penalties….Really?!??!

I think, we as fans, should actually do what McDaniels was talking about. Not get too high after a win and not to low after a loss. It’s game one. It’s going to be a long season.

    Giddy up, Broncos Fans!

  16. gardenstatebroncofan says:

Hey guys….yes we could have won..but we didnt….we didnt play well enough too….not to worried, we won our first 6 last yr and how did that work out…The colts lost there first game to…bet there fans arent jumping out of windows…lets get ready for the Hawks

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  17. Yovi21 says:

One MAJOR thing I saw that IMO CAN’T happen, We would be driving and be moving the ball well, then we would have a short gain or short loss and the drive would stall. we can’t stall after one bad play! also Mcd, switch it up we shouldnt only run on first down, our offense is great but way too predictable.

its a marathon not a 100yard dash, GO BRONCOS!!!

  18. florio's_mom says:

Even though we lost I thought it was a great game. We didn’t do anything consistently bad the entire game very solid play except for four major things.

    1. The delay really messed up our momentum
    2. McBean sucks
    3. Bad decision on Orton for throwing that pick
    4. KO coverage was bad (okay the only thing we did consistently bad)

We just nee to tighten up a bit. Like in 05 when we lost to the fins on the first game and then made it all the way to the afc championship game

We will play better next week.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

My post about the profanities McD said during the game got deleted!!!!! And I didn’t actually spell out any profanities here and stated it very professionally, just hiding it will not make it go away, first thing I ever saw here that’s flat out unfair, McD is free to rant and we can’t even bring it up, and whenever any one of us uses the slightest bad word, it’s censored. McD needs to clean his mouth, if nothing else for the children watching the game.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry for the guys who look forward to my post about the game, I had it here last evening and it touched on everything, unfortunately the blog decided to delete it because I mentioned the foul language spoken by McD on the sidelines while I didn’t use any. Hopefully that never happens again, I wasted a lot of my time bringing a game report to no avail. Like TRB says, but I never do, I’m out (for a while), need to reflect on this, it made me feel bad, didn’t deserve this either way you look at it.

Remember the weekly game score prediction friendly contest is on again, place your scores for the Seattle game before Sunday.

  21. Yovi21 says:

One thing I saw that excites me, when Doom comes back next season him and Robert Ayers are going to be one hell of a pass rush!

  22. Broncfalls says:

Hey guys/gals….with close to 400 posts it’s hard to read them all. However, I go through them throughout the week to catch up…..

Bay, buddy I’m sorry your game report an thoughts were deleted. If that were the case and the reason it was deleted unfair! Simply because of your comments regarding JMac and the profanity!

IMHO…I dissagree. I could care less what adjectives come out of his mouth to emphasize his point. Quinn was lost out there and it killed the drive. JMac is a head coach in the NFL and if his passion and fire brings out the “F” bomb when trying to get million dollar players to get their heads screwed on straight then so be it! This is professional football played by grown men who make several millions of dollars. There are enough issues to fix on this team without having to worry how a head coach gets his point across.

Do you honestly think an NFL player is not going to respect a head coach because of how mad he got and how he worded it? Come on! The % of players that actually make a team vs. the ones that don’t are estounding. Count your blessings Quinn you even have a spot, AND FOCUS! that goes for McBean as well.

IDK….just my opinion. I for one like the fire, the passion and if profanity adds just a little bit more fire to the message so be it! I bet Quinn gets the formation right next time though….

    just my opinion

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

I’d can’t remember who said it, some the sattement was that a game isn’t won or lost on one paly, but there usually arte 5 plays that spell the difference.,
Play 1) Broncos get first down deep in Jags territory only to have a holding call. At least 3 points lost.
Play 2) Broncos get first down deep in Jags terrirtory only to have Bucky fumble. At least 3 points lost.
Plays 3, 4) Face mask twice on same Jags drive. TD.
Play 5) LLoyd just inches out of bounds in end zone. TD missed.

    OFFENSE
    QB
Orton A- Did an exceptional job considering lacl of time to go trhrough progressioins.

I was able to retrieve my post, slightly different from the original, but the message remains:

About the game, plenty of good bad and ugly as usual.

Orton had his moments, showing more inaccuracy than in preseason at times, but overall handled the pressure real well and delivered plenty of good balls.

My boy Lloyd is even more awesome than I had hoped, and to think early in the off season many bloggers thought he would be cut….

Royal just as awesome, big things in the future for both these guys.

Moreno looked good and when he did the hurddle thing I knew his hamstring must be ok, great relief. However just like last year he has that indecision in front of the hole and starts dancing trying to find something that will break a big one, but it just doesn’t happen, just go into the hole in front of you with authority and get that extra 2/3 yards each time instead.

Bucky was totally rusty and out of sinc, a difficult thing to watch, specially the costly fumble/turnover.

Prater was great with his 54 yard FG.

The KO coverage team was absolutely as bad as it gets allowing 137 yards on 4 KO returns, not a typo.

Both lines, D and O have a lot of work ahead of them to reverse the running #s, only 89 for us to 134 for them. They also have just as much work about reversing the sack #’s, 1 for us, 3 for them.

The O line as I said all off season will be the key to our success, to no surprise they weren’t up to the task in their first game, Harrris playing again will help on the right side but it still doesn’t fix the middle of the line where we couldn’t run since they didn’t open up any lanes and they pressured and sacked Orton through the middle also. Rookies on the O line never a good thing since it is the unit that takes longest to gel.

The D line is less troubling, even so they allowed plenty of yards on the ground, they were able to tighten it up multiple times and get even some three and out, a novelty of sort, LOL.

Just like I said they would go after our LB’s on short throws, they did and had a lot of fun doing it, good thing the safeties came to the rescue multiple times.

DJ played great, so good to have him back, Ayers is improving regardless of what others say.

Hunter is a good late acquisition who showed potential, tough break for Moss…

The delay of games penalties of the offense were not worthy of regular season, you just can’t have those, Orton and McD need to straighten that out.

McBean was atrocious and those two face masks penalties worth 30 yards were totally unecessary, he played those two plays like a real idiot. That “drive of his” was in essence the drive that lost us the game.

The insertion of Tebow into the game only pleased the Jags fans and netted us 2 yards! We don’t need him in, Orton ran way better than that, LOL.

Ok, I kept this for last as to me it was the most disappointing aspect of the game other than the loss. McD has not matured one iota. When Quinn blew up a play, you could easily do lip reading on the sideline and see McD saying multiple obscenities. I mean I’m all for wearing your emotion on your sleeves, but this is completely out of hand, how does he ever expect to earn the respect of the players treating them like that, a simple sending them to the bench would have a much better effect in my opinion.

This is what I have been worried about most this season, the O line and how McD would go about learning to earn the respect of his players, well for now we are zero for two in that department is how I see it. Very disappointing to say the least, please coach leave your childish frustration antics at home and become the man that we need you to become to be able to lead this team to where we want to go, you soon will run out of the youth thing excuse and your players will turn on you, no one in their right mind enjoys being treated like that nor respects it, simple as that, it’s your future you are dealing with, don’t squander it away because of your temper.

oldsouthstander, I`ve could`nt have said it any better. We`ve got are work cut out for us. I do believe that it`s gonna get better. WE NEED HARRIS ON THE LINE!

    OOPPPSS!!! Pushed the wrong button.
    “Report card” continued:
Kick return C- No hint of a good return
    Prater and Colquitt A+

    DEFENSE

DL C- Stopped the run better than I expected, but no pass rush.

LB C- No containment on outside runs, no pass rush.

SECONDARY C- THree TD Passes by Garrard!!!!! Unacceptable!!!

Addendum to five play that decided the game.
Face mask penalties = 1 play
Play 4) Jags 3rd and 11 and make it with ease.

My prediction for this week is Bronco win over seattle 31-27.

  28. Orange_Crusher says:

Well, I had the Broncos starting out the season 2-4 but I counted Jax as a win….. humm?? I knew it would be a bumpy start to the season…. but….

    note to Josh,

Don’t draft a QB and then use him as a HB… Yes, I understand the cameo “thing” but really you could have had him hand off or at least let the kid pass the ball when he is in there. Otherwise, your Wildhorse concept is just a QB sneak and is not going to work.

Well, we better hope that we get a win at HOME next week because after that there is a four game mountain to climb (Indy, Tenn, Bal, NYJ)…

    KEEP THE DRIVE ALIVE BRONCOS!!!!

This might get worse before it gets better???

    ILMSDB!!!! W or L!

  29. baylinorcrush says:

For those who are surprised how well Garrard did against us, it’s nothing new, this is what Klis warned us about EARLY LAST WEEK:

I know fantasy players love Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew and hate Jaguars’ QB David Garrard.

But in the real football world that is played between the lines, Garrard is the guy the Broncos have to stop if they are to win the opener Sunday at Jacksonville.

The Broncos and Jags have played twice in the previous three years. Each game was at Invesco Field and each time the Broncos were off to a terrific start.

And Garrard won both games. In 2008, the Broncos were 4-1 when the Jags came to town. Garrard completed 25 of 34 for 276 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and used his legs to convert a third-and-1.

In 2007, the Broncos were 2-0 until Jacksonville came into Invesco. Garrard was masterful in a move-the-chains offense, running for 52 yards, passing for 154 (on 14 for 20) with a touchdown and no interceptions.

And not only Klis has a good take on things Broncos, so does Woody who predicted we would lose this game 24-16, only missed it by one point. Just trying to give these guys credit when it’s due, since bloggers here often say those guys have no idea what they are talking about, LOL.

Allright our first game score prediction of the week, of the year for that matter, good luck to you strandoftds!

  31. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah OC, I think the mountain you are talking about is that after Seattle and the Colts, we face three of the top 5 teams running the ball in the league last year.

  32. baylinorcrush says:

And in a row, Tennessee #5, Baltimore #3 and the Jets #1. Tough schedule by any standard, at least for us right now….

  33. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry the Titans were #2 and the Ravens #5.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

    five. LOL.

  35. strandoftds says:

This game is not going to be no walk in the park. Pete Carrol is going to have his team ready to play. What the Seahawks did To S.F. was rather surprising even though Seattle was at home. Pretty interesting game coming up this weekend. I wonder If Harris will be playing this week?

  36. strandoftds says:

    Hang ten. Oh sorry,flashback. LOL.

  37. Orange_Crusher says:

Im not just sure that Seattle isn’t a mountain to climb in the stead.

Did you see how they smashed the Great Mike Singeltarys’ defense 31-6?

A quick look at the points that the Broncos have produced since Josh started calling the plays is concerning.

In the last 17 games Joshs’ Broncos has averaged 20 points per game (including defense points). Breaking the 30 point mark just one time and surpassing the 40 point mark just one time.

I’m inclined to think that the broncos need to score more than 31 points in order to win at HOME against the SeaHawks….

Do we think Joshs’ Bronco Offense is capable of 31 points….? I thought the Bronco O looked a lot like last years version… mediocre, medium, ordinary, bland, pale…. Not very fun to watch… There were “flashes” of light but then…. nada in the end… John elway would have won that game in the fourth qtr…

If we lose to Seattle and start off 0-2?? Might as well start the Kid and give us some entertainment…!!

    ILMSDB!!!

  38. Ohio says:

Ok not all that bad considering the outcome. I thought we played great at times and just brutal in other and I want to see more offensive rhythm like we showed on that drive just before the half. Orton was picking them apart and I believe that is how Orton operates best, quick up tempo. He excelled at that during the pre-season so McD needs to do some more of that this season, especially early on and get the other teams D tired.

McBean, come on dude………..2 15 yard facemask penalities on one drive, that pretty much sealed our fate right there. As unbelievable as that was our inability to stop the run when we needed to hurt as well. You know Mo Drew is getting the ball and you can’t let him get outside. I believe his average was pretty good so that needs to be improved.

Special teams………….how come we always seem to struggle in this catagory? The Jags started at their 40 or 45 yard line like 3-4 times. With this we’ve already lost the field posistion battle. I believe Haggan is our Special Teams captain, he’s need to get in that units grill and get em going!

All in all I thought we should have won this game. Llyod shined, Royal had a nice day, running game was decent, Orton was reliable and dependable, Defense showed some glimpses. Areas to improve are special teams, dumb penalties, stop the run, generate a pass rush and for the love of Pete CAN WE PLEASE STOP GIVING UP 1ST DOWNS WHEN THE OTHER TEAM HAS 3RD AND 10 OR MORE!

Let’s get a W next week and get rolling!

  39. florio's_mom says:

We need to shape up or ship out. We could very easily lose our first 6 games.

  40. Yovi21 says:

well, Seattle did look convincing and it will be a good match-up come sunday. we didnt look great but it was our first game, remember last years first game? other than D last year we looked terrible. we put up one offensive TD; on a miracle tip none the less and walked away lucky. I HOPE this year can be similar, although we weren’t able to win the first game maybe we can do better in the other games. Next week I predict 35 points out of our offense ( 28 if Harris is still out). Call me crazy, but I have faith in the offense Mcd is creating; I mean we made mental misteaks that cost us at least 6pts maybe even 14! unfortunately I can’t say the same for wink!

The wild horses with Tebow is great, but I think every play we should give him Moreno and Bucky as option backs. If we let him pass out of that it could be deadly!

    GO DENVER!!!

  41. 1nOnlyTRB says:

its all about any given sunday, you lose the ones you think you are gonna win and win the ones u expect to lose. Things happen.

The only people surprised by this loss and panicing are the ones that thought we would be really good this year. from 10-6 – 13 – 3. We are fans, we are supposed to be optimistic but realism helps too and quite frankly, without Marshall, our offense took a hit. Without Doom our D took a hit. And without Nolan, our D once again, took a hit. Hate it or love it, those are facts. Now we just gotta play the waiting game to see new guys emerge and Wink come into his own. No need to panic. Just take us for what we are. An average team trying to find its winning identity that the coach is trying (and so far failing) to instill. Nothing happens overnight, and whether it ever happens, who knows. I just always love watching Broncos football. Would be great if we could win, but nothing we as fans can do about that. Keep the faith like Ashely would always say, and just try your best to enjoy the season and not stress it and get high blood pressure cuz its gonna be a loooooong season lol. TRB out……

  42. vabroncoguy says:

I will give my opinion of this game very simply…what everyone has gotten was the decision that McD made for this team. He DECIDED to get rid of a QB who can make plays for one who will simply run his offense. One without the talent to do ANYTHING. i.e. You all always talk about how Orton does well until he is pressures. WELLLL pressure busts pipes. When the game is on the line and Orton HAS TO make a play, he fails every time. Remember the Bengal game, he threw 1 pass that should have been intercepted and dropped and a second that was tipped and then a miracle for the win. The Dallas game he threw a bad pass that Marsh made into a miracle. This is the Orton m.o. as long as the game is on “schedule” he is fine. He cannot make a play. We gave up on TWO receivers that can MAKE PLAYS. Marshall would have made that catch in the end zone, I believe it, I know it. Even the announcers during the game said, you gotta have talent guys. Dez is making plays in Dallas. Bay-Bay? has not even been on the field. DECKER played special teams. Which i might add, McD said he improved. KM is slow and not a game changer. We should have drafted Orakpo. Rookie of the year last year, and the reason the holding call was called last night. The secondary gets old overnight. WE STILL HAVE NO LINE. Ayers stll sucks. He got that 1 sack after Garrard held the ball for 8 seconds…watch the replay. Five step drop then wait for three counts. Even I can gt there faster than that. Moss…nothing. All the free agent pickups…nada. Mojo still almost 100 yards over 4 per carry. THANKS JAMAL WILLIAMS you are making a difference. This is a hard team to watch. Whew now with all that said, can’t wait to go to the game Sunday and hopefully watch a win. Denver is 4-0 in games I have attended. I am the rabbit’s foot

WOW! i sense some early frustrations..:)..cheer up bronco fams..no one said it was going to be easy. that game guaged how well this new unit is gellin… Hopefully that game shook off the preseason rusts…..

We’ll get em’ next time…..”Glass half-full”. we didnt give MJD a rushing TD, held him under 100…SPs need tweaking..probably still a young unit. TE coverage needs work…

overall, Im glad the season has kicked off.

    Go Broncos…stomp em’ seagulls…aha
