Broncos at Colts: Second Half Live Blog

December 13th, 2009 - 12:47pm by Gray Caldwell

Q3 15:00: Eddie Royal is back deep to receive the kickoff to start the second half.

Q3 14:54: Royal picks up 21 yards on the return out to the 19-yard line. The offense is back on the field, and Kyle Orton hands off to Knowshon Moreno to start the drive. The rookie carries it to the 24-yard line. On second down, Orton finds Brandon Marshall, who tries to spin out of tackle. He is brought down, however, after a gain of three. Now it’s 3rd-and-2, and Orton is in the shotgun. He drops back and fires to Royal, but the receiver can’t haul it in before being tackled. The incompletion brings in Mitch Berger for a punt. T.J. Rushing calls for a fair catch at the 19-yard line — it’s a 54-yard punt by Berger.

Q3 13:40: Peyton Manning takes the snap under center before faking a handoff and dropping back. He fires a pass toward Dallas Clark under pressure by Vonnie Holliday. The pass falls incomplete, as Ty Law was right there with the coverage on Clark.

Q3 13:13: A two-yard run by Joseph Addai brings up 3rd-and-8 for the Colts. Elvis Dumervil chases Manning, who lets loose a pass for Clark. It is hauled in momentarily, but Darcel McBath bursts in for a big hit to break up the pass. That brings up fourth down for the Colts, and Royal is deep to receive the punt. He finds a little space after the 50-yard punt, picking up five yards after reversing field. The offense will take over on its own 34-yard line.

Q3 12:42: On first down, Moreno takes a carry for 11 yards and another first down. The next play nets another first down after a 13-yard completion from Orton to Brandon Marshall.

*INJURY UPDATE: Correll Buckhalter is doubtful to return to the game with an ankle injury.

Q3 10:39: After a run for no gain by Moreno, Orton escapes pressure and scrambles out of the pocket for a pickup of nine yards. That sets up 3rd-and-1 at the 33-yard line. Moreno is stopped behind the line, but the play never officially happened — a delay of game penalty on the Broncos pushes the ball back to the 38-yard line. On 3rd-and-6, Orton is in the shotgun. He is sacked on a blitz by Gary Brackett. Now the ball is on the 40-yard line, and Berger is in to punt. The punt is fair caught at the 11-yard line.

Q3 9:11: On 1st-and-10 for the Colts, Manning takes the snap under center. He hands off to Addai, who picks up three yards before being taken down by Dumervil. On second down, Manning drops back into the shotgun. He drops the ball off to Addai, who picks up a first down before being tackled by Brian Dawkins.

Q3 7:40: The Colts pick up four yards on a first-down carry. Manning drops back in the shotgun on second down, and the pass is tipped in the air before being intercepted by Dawkins — his second of the day. The offense will take over at the Indianapolis 38-yard line.

Q3 7:19: On first down, it looks like a screen is being set up for Moreno, but the Colts are ready for it, so Orton throws the ball at the running back’s feet. On second down, Moreno takes a carry seven yards to set up 3rd-and-3. Orton is nearly sacked on the third-down play, but he ducks away from the pressure, scrambles to his left and finds Marshall for the first down at the 24-yard line.

Q3 5:41: After a Moreno run for no gain, Orton finds Marshall near the first-down marker — it’s a nine-yard gain, setting up 3rd-and-1.

**INJURY REPORT: Renaldo Hill is questionable to return to the game with an ankle injury.

Q3 5:05: A false start penalty moves the ball back five yards. It is now 3rd-and-6, and Orton is in the shotgun. He drops back and throws an interception at the goal line. Tim Jennings returns the pick to the 14-yard line.

Q3 4:33: The Colts offense is back on the field, and Manning is in the shotgun. The quarterback fakes a handoff before trying to find Reggie Wayne, but the pass falls incomplete.

Q3 4:28: The Colts run the ball on second down — a two-yard gain to the 16-yard line, setting up 3rd-and-8. On the ensuing play, Manning is in the shotgun. He fires down the middle of the field intended for Austin Collie, but D.J. Williams was right with the receiver in coverage, and the pass sails incomplete. On fourth down, Pat McAfee is in to punt the ball away to Royal, who is deep to receive. He signals for a fair catch at the 43-yard line, where the offense will take over.

Q3 3:34: A five-yard penalty is called on the Colts for encroachment before the first play of the Broncos’ drive. With Orton in the shotgun, Moreno takes a carry for no gain. That makes it 2nd-and-5, and Orton fakes a handoff to Moreno before firing to Marshall for a first down. The receiver now has the second-most catches in a game in Broncos history — behind his own record of 18 set last season.

Q3 1:44: A Moreno run for 11 yards gains another first down, and Peyton Hillis takes a carry two yards to set up 2nd-and-8 at the 24-yard line. Orton drops back and tries to find Marshall, but the pass is broken up by Kelvin Hayden. On 3rd-and-8, Orton throws toward Jabar Gaffney out of the shotgun, but the pass is incomplete. Matt Prater is in to attempt a 42-yard field goal — and he misses wide right. Indianapolis will take over at its own 32-yard line.

Q3 1:02: Darcel McBath picks off Manning’s pass on first down — his second career interception. The rookie returns the ball to the 24-yard line. On first down, Orton quickly finds Gaffney for a first down. The Broncos now have a 1st-and-10 at the 12-yard line. Moreno gets the carry on the next play, picking up two yards. On 2nd-and-8, Orton tries to fire quickly to Marshall, but it falls incomplete. The play brings the third quarter to an end.

Q4 15:00: The Broncos have a 3rd-and-8 at the 10-yard line to start the fourth quarter. Orton is forced to throw the ball out of bounds after no one comes open in the end zone. Prater is in to attempt another field goal — this one 28 yards out. This time he knocks it home, and the Broncos narrow the lead by three points.

COLTS 21, BRONCOS 10

Q4 14:50: Prater’s kick sails eight yards deep in the end zone, and it is fielded for a touchback. Manning and the Colts take over at their own 20-yard line, and the quarterback takes the first-down snap in the shotgun. He fakes a handoff and tries to set up a screen, but the pass falls incomplete.

Q4 14:42: Manning sprints back up to the line and tries to hurry off a play, firing downfield for Garcon. Goodman is there, however, and he swats the pass out of the receiver’s hands to set up 3rd-and-10. Manning is in the shotgun, and his pass is nearly intercepted by Goodman. The Broncos defense has started to stiffen, and McAfee is in to punt to Royal. Royal is hit by three Colts, however, immediately after receiving the 46-yard punt. There is a loss of two on the return. The offense will take over at its own 32-yard line.

Q4 14:28: On 1st-and-10, the Colts are called for encroachment, pushing the ball forward five yards. Now 1st-and-5 from the 37-yard line, Orton drops back and gets the ball to Marshall for his 16th catch and a first down. Moreno takes the carry on the ensuing first down, picking up six yards. On 2nd-and-4, Orton lines up under center. The signal caller drops back and finds Gaffney, who bursts across the field to the 30-yard line for another first down.

Q4 12:52: Orton tries to get the ball out to Marshall for a bubble screen, but Marshall can’t quite hold onto it. On second down, Orton drops back and fires to Marshall for his 17th catch — a yard short of the first-down marker. That sets up 3rd-and-1, and the Broncos hurry up to the line. Orton keeps the ball on a quarterback sneak, picking up two yards for the first down.

Q4 11:47: Moreno picks up a yard on first down, and Orton finds Marshall for his 18th catch — tying a Broncos franchise record set by Marshall last season — and a first down at the 6-yard line.

Q4 10:47: Moreno is dropped for a loss of three yards, so it is 2nd-and-goal from the 9-yard line. Orton fires to Marshall — his franchise record-setting 19th catch — at the 5-yard line, setting up 3rd-and-goal.

Q4 9:58: The Lucas Oil Stadium crowd is getting loud as the offense steps back up to the line. Orton lines up in the shotgun, and Brandon Stokley goes in motion from left to right. Marshall ties the NFL record with his 20th catch after Orton finds him in the end zone for a touchdown. The Broncos are going for two after the score. Orton lines up under center and hands off to Moreno, who is stopped short of the line. The Broncos cut the lead to five points.

COLTS 21, BRONCOS 16

Q4 9:44: Prater’s kickoff goes nine yards deep in the end zone, and is fielded for a touchback. The Colts will take over at the 20-yard line. Manning lines up in the shotgun and hands off to Addai, who is hit right away by Vonnie Holliday. The running back slips away, however, but is still taken down for no gain. On 2nd-and-10, Manning lines up in the shotgun again. He throws an incompletion intended for Clark, and it is now 3rd-and-10. With Manning in the shotgun yet again, Austin Collie comes away with a big reception to move the chains. The ball is now at the Indianapolis 43-yard line.

Q4 7:58: Holliday and Wesley Woodyard taken down Addai for a loss of a yard on first down. On second down, Manning fakes a handoff but gets the ball to Wayne despite being hit as he threw. That sets up the Colts with another first down at the Denver 38-yard line.

Q4 6:47: Addai picks up 11 yards for another first down. The Colts take their time, letting the clock wind down before stepping up to the line. On the ensuing first down, Addai takes another carry and picks up two yards before being tackled by Mario Haggan. On 2nd-and-8, Manning finds Collie out of the shotgun for another first down into the red zone.

Q4 4:41: Mike Hart carries the ball inside the 10-yard line, setting up 2nd-and-5. Manning seems to check out of the original play, but the Colts are called for a false start. That makes it 2nd-and-10 at the 14-yard line, and stops the clock. On the next play, Manning hands off to Hart, who nearly picks up the first down. It is 3rd-and-1 at the 5-yard line for the Colts. The play is a handoff to Hart, who is hit in the backfield, but he bounces off the tackle and sets up a 1st-and-goal on the second effort.

Q4 2:43: Denver calls its first timeout of the second half. On the other side of the break, Manning steps back in under center. He hands off to Hart, who fights his way to the 1-yard line. Denver calls its second timeout of the half.

Q4 2:29: The Broncos stop Hart short of the goal line on the next play before calling their final timeout of the half. Now 3rd-and-goal, Manning fakes a handoff before firing to Clark for a touchdown. The extra point is up and in, and the Indianapolis lead is back up to 12. That was a 14-play, 80-yard drive for the Colts.

COLTS 28, BRONCOS 16

Q4 2:25: After a touchback, Denver has the ball at its own 20-yard line. Orton lines up in the shotgun and tries to find Marshall, but the pass falls incomplete. On second down, the team tries to set up Marshall for a bubble screen, but Orton and the receiver can’t connect. On 3rd-and-10, Orton is sacked. After the 8-yard loss, the Broncos are on the 12-yard line, and the clock ticks down to the two-minute warning.

Q4 2:00: Orton is in the shotgun and fires the ball to Marshall for his 21st catch. Marshall then laterals to Chris Kuper, but the offensive lineman can’t quite get to the first-down marker. Marshall’s catch set a new NFL record for most catches in a game. Marshall finishes the day with 21 catches for 200 yards.

Q4 0:00: The Colts take over on the turnover on downs, and Manning takes three knees to run the clock out. The Broncos fall to 8-5 and the Colts remain undefeated at 13-0. Next on Denver’s schedule is a home contest against the Oakland Raiders.

A blogger on the Denver post said to either play Hillis or trade him. I don’t want to see Hillis traded or let go, but I can’t help to think that his talent has been wasted sitting on the bench. When Buck got hurt, I thought McD would actually play Hillis, but it was wishful thinking. Nothing worse then watching your team beat themselves, which is exactly what happened today.

  2. tnalen66 says:

We would be stupid to trade Hillis cuz we would not get a good pick. But them again we did not get Orakapo and we traded a #1 pick for a 5th or 6th corner who can’t even play on special teams.Keep him cuz you never know when a RB will go down. This lost doesn’t bother me as much as the wash one did.

  3. broncos504 says:

we lose becuz we did not want to win

  4. tnalen66 says:

We still have slim chance at the West. We need to win out and have SD lose to Cincy & Tenn. We would win cuz of a better converence record. BUT WE HAVE TO WIN NEXT WEEK. Keep a the top wild card spot and slim chance at the division. GO BRONCOS !!!!

  5. tnalen66 says:

WOW DJackson is great. I love ERoyal but we could of had Jackson.

  6. Deify_you says:

Either we win AFC West and clinch 2nd seed or we need Cinci to clinch the 2nd seed, MIA to win AFC East. Current play off picture has us playing NE than SD I would rather play MIA than Bengals and let JAC and SD battle it out for who gets to play the Colts the next round.

  7. jonah22 says:

I don’t care if we win the west or not. I just want a playoff birth. As long as we’re in that’s all that matters to me right now. homefield advantage isn’t what it’s all cut out to be.. we’ve gotten owned a couple times at home this year

  8. tnalen66 says:

Does any one know if Russel starting for Oakland or the good QB who got hurt today?

  9. Deify_you says:

Gradkowski tore his MCL in his left knee and partially tore the same ligament in his right knee and could be out for the rest of the season according to USA Today

  10. tnalen66 says:

Well I would rather face Russel, gives us a better chance to win.

  11. Deify_you says:

Actually tnalen they could start Charlie Frye, Tom Cable didnt specify if Russel would start

  12. tnalen66 says:

Frye or Russel are alot worse than a hot Gradkowski. I feel alot better with him out.

  13. SC_Socnorb says:

It really killed us when bucky went out. The two running backs definitely feed off each other. Bucky would have had some big gains today. On the one with Moreno got 10, he lost his footing, bucky would have had 25. We do have to remember though that Moreno is a rookie and he has to get used to the speed of the nfl. Hope buck is back soon though. How couldn’t some of our other receivers get open vs a young secondary? Good game for the beast but others have to get open.

Short yardage is a nightmare that we must address. All our passes our dink and dunks so why not do it on 3rd down too.

  14. broncofan2639 says:

baylinorcrush: I for one agree with everything you said. I am just as upset as you are. Don’t forget the two point conversion they went for with Moreno up the middle. I have said all year that Moreno does not have the power to go up the gut. I don’t know what Hillis has done to get on Mcd’s black list. Wasted first round pick. Should have been a defensive player. You didn’t say much about Orton, so I will. We are going nowhere with him. I don’t care what anyone says he is not as smart as everyone thinks he is, plus he has no sense of awareness in the pocket, plus he’s not as accurate as people think. I guess everyone knows how I fill about Orton. Brandstater can do just as good. Anothe thing about todays game is we got 3 turnovers & scored a total of 3 points off the turnovers. If I’m not mistaken all 3 turnovers were in Indy’s side of the field. Another interception in the red zone, way to go Orton.

  15. stevecan2 says:

The best said so far about the issues with Moreno in the short game.
    “McD…. 3rd and 1… dive play. 4th and 2 inches…. dive play. 3rd and 2…. dive play. 4th and 1…. DIVE PLAY! 3rd and 7…. draw play. 4th and a millimeter…. DIVE PLAY!!!! UGH!!!!”
Very valid and should not be over looked. Face it very few backs in this league can succeed when everyone and their mom knows whats coming. There were some upsides today that I did not see coming, but in the end most of us knew that it would take Manning to lose this game and it almost did. We just could not capitalize once again which says a whole lot about the mentality of our team. With that said folks we did just play the Colts not some over rated piece of trash like S.D.

  16. jonah22 says:

You know what’s funny? We have the exact record as last year at this time except this year it isn’t just as simply as winning one more game to get a wild card spot.

  17. broncomvp24 says:

I am getting sick og hillis not palying. He got one run and it was for 5 yards. KnoMo averaged what 3 yards? It is rediculous to only have 1 runningback! He was so tired that his legs started to give out! PLAY HILLIS MC D WTF IS GOING ON?

  18. broncomvp24 says:

    *of hillis not palying

  19. dcftcollins says:

where is hillis mcd is not using his head smack him in the head like gibbs does

  20. broncos20 says:

BIG congratulations to our very own Brandon Marshall! He might break his own record some day…it wouldve been sweeter if it came out with a statement W….

clark had his way with us in the red zone…still a weakness…BUT I saw a lot of upsides with the defense in second quarter and on…we ended peyton’s streak of 300 yds + passing….i still love our seconday.
cant linger in our loses too long…get back to the board and correct the mistakes..too many crucial plays incompleted…lets rest up and get back on track..

now the team that I’ve been looking forward to play against this season , the Eagles, is two weeks away,,,my roommate is an eagles fan and he just cant keep his can shut..all I want for christmas is a blowout win over the eagles….lol…

  21. dcftcollins says:

we had our chances today playcalling by mcd for moreno was terible he should have used hillis more defence woke up to late

  22. oldsouthstander says:

Like all Bronco fans, I was very disapointed in the way the Colts totally dominated the Broncos for the first half. But, I was delighted to see that they didn’t quit, in fact, they outplayed ther Colts in the second half. The adjustments they made offensively and defensively were good to see. BUT…… McD needs to do something other than handing off to Moreno on short yardage plays. You’d think that 13 games into the season he’d realize that everybody knows what he’s going to do and all they do is key on Moreno. GGGGAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
It looks like 10-6 will be what it takes to be a wild card team. The Raiders are not going to be the pushover that the were first time around if Gadarowski (?) is healthy. He’s no starting QB, but is ceratinly much better than Russell, another of Davis’s first round failures. It would be nice to see the Broncos take the last three games, but the Philly game at Philly is going to be a real challange.
Keep the faith and bring on the Raiders!!!!!

    Predictions result time!

Unfortunately, a loss week, meaning no big hoopla for any of the loss prediction guys, just a recognition of their vision. Two guys stuck out from the pack with some uncanny picks:

    1) tnalen66 16-27 Amazingly only one point off both the score and the spread.

    2) WaitTilNextYear 17-27 Also amazingly only two points off the score and the spread.

    3) stevecan2 13-34, only other guy to pick us to lose, a bit off on his score.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have 6 guys who picked us to win in double digits, a bit overly enthusiastic, but no reason to have any of those guys on the wall of shame this week. LOL. So here are the true no matter what the challenge is Bronco fans for the week:

    Broncfalls 34-24 (10)
    babychamp_broncos 33-21 (12)
    Danso 34-21 (13)
    SC_Socnorb 34-21 (13)
    jonah22 31-17 (14)
    57YellowT-Bird 34-17 (17)

The rest of the 36 picks, including mine, were more conservative in their expectations, they all had us winning in single digit. We should be back on the winning track Sunday against the Raiders who just lost that new QB wonder of theirs, good news, so start up your picks, deadline is Saturday pm, no picks on game day. I have a feeling we will not have any loss picks this coming week, not unless you want to take a serious shot at ending up on the wall of shame! LOL.

I have done all my ranting here last night, but just to reinforce my point I will re-post here a couple of my posts from earlier in my “the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” pieces starting with the Dallas game, week 4, it’s too freaking hilarious, just have to show it to you guys:

    BRONCOS 17 COWBOYS 10

    The Ugly:

This week it has to go to McD, when at the end of the 3rd quarter, Moreno gets the call on third and one AND fourth and one and doesn’t get either so we turn the ball over!
If you’re going to go with the power run up the middle, WHY IN THE HECK DO WE HAVE JORDAN? I thought it was for short yardage situation, I won’t even mention Hillis because he probably was in the doghouse by then, but he is a short yardage guy also. McD this is not the 1st time you do that, you have done it REPEATEDLY so far this season, and Moreno NEVER OR HARDLY EVER GETS THAT ONE YARD, HELLO?…. Don’t be so stubborn with that play, please.

  26. baylinorcrush says:

Now, the Ugly part of the following game against the Patriots, week 5:

    BRONCOS 20 PATRIOTS 17

    The Ugly:

This week it could of gone to the uniforms, but to tell you the truth I was so engrossed into the game, with never a second to relax, I never really paid attention to them. Of course the ST as a whole could of easily filled this section, but this week I will give it to McD again, nothing personal, I love the guy, but his idea of plays on short yardage is clearly asinine regardless of him getting hit by lightning at the very end of the game in OT.
Let’s recapitulate, 1st quarter Moreno up the middle in short yardage, nothing, 2nd quarter, same, 3rd quarter, 3rd and one, Moreno up the middle, not a yard again, later in the third, same play, same guy, loss of three, at the end of OT, 2nd down one yard to go, same guy, same play, nothing, comes up 3rd and one, I swear I was going to jump at the coach’s throat right through the TVscreen if he one more time used the same play with the same guy!!!! No, that’s when lightning hits McD, he goes for a short pass, gets the 1st down and everything was ok… PLEASE, when you run it up the middle on short yardage take Moreno out, he has shown us over and over that HE CANNOT GET THAT YARD, and give Hillis or Jordan some shots at it. I’m done with this, I promise I won’t mention it again, I’ve grown too tired of that play to even argue it anymore.

I thought that would pretty well better sum up where we’re at with this b.s., rather than write new stuff about it, like I said back then I’m too tired of it to even address it any longer. Actually it was a lie, because you should see how I ranted on this blog in my 3:40 pm post yesterday. LOL.

  27. beefdirkus says:

    Baylinocrush,
Agree with you. How many times did McD run it on a 3rd and short or 4th and short. If it did not work the first 2 or 3 times why keep trying it. Try a pass or put in a short yardage back.
Moreno seems to dance around too much instead of hitting the hole.
I also question going for the 2 point conversion when they did. I know it did not affect the outcome but if the D would have held them to a field goal (which they almost did), it would have been a 8 point game instead of a 7.

  28. Broncfalls says:

I know this was an “L” win the cloumn, but I like what I say. I don’t ever think you can justify a loss but the guys played with heart!

LOOK GUYS, YEAH I KNOW TOUGH LOSS, BUT COME ON!!! WE’RE THE FEAKIN BRONCOS!!!!

WHO IN THE AFC ARE YOU AFRAID OF?

INDY? WE ACTUALLY SHOULD HAVE WON THAT GAME!

    SAN DIEGO? ALREADY BEAT THEM

    BENGALS? ALREADY BEAT THEM

BALTIMORE? NOT THE SAME TEAM ANYMORE

    STEELERS WON’T MAKE IT

    NEW ENGLAND? ALREADY BEAT THEM.

If we’re looking for a mental edge, it’s there! fix the short yardage problem in Denver and it’s go time from there!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  29. killerkod says:

I hope he gets grilled at the press conferences this week about using Moreno and short yardage situations. I think that should be the focus of the entire thing. Maybe then he’ll clue in that it’s obviously a problem! haha

  30. beefdirkus says:

    Broncfalls,
Agree, we still control the wildcard. All the Broncos need to due is win out the rest of the games. Even if they drop the game to Philly, I think they will get in the playoffs. (I think they will beat Philly).
I would love to see a rematch with either the Colts or Chargers.

  31. broncos504 says:

we need to get everyone involve in the off be=ut way to fight guys

  32. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

We lost to a very good team. I was impressed with the way the team played, the defense was ran around for the 1st quarter but hung in their enough to win the game. The offense is still under construction in my eyes. Orton can keep a team in the game, he won’t lose the game for you, but he can’t carry a team like NFL teams sometimes need. Why can’t he just get rid of the ball instead of taking sacks all the time? It seems like he holds onto it way too much thinking he can slip away from sacks with his “athleticism”. Just saying, that’s my only few gripes about the guy.

Don’t look past Oakland. Let’s do the thing.

  33. Big D 44 says:

Baylinocrush- I agree with you on the short yardage play calling. It is really getting on my nerves that we will not use Hillis. McD needs to get over it and start using our big horse. Also, mixing up the play calling wouldn’t hurt our short yardage conversion percentage.

With that said, I put this loss (as with most of them) on McD. Our Defense is doing good. I know we shouldn’t have given up so many points at the beginning of the game but we toitally shut them out for a big portion of the game. We got three turnovers and our OFFENSE CANNOT SCORE. We would have won if our offense could score. Therefore, I feel McD’s beloved offense that he brought here is the weakness of our team. IMO we should put in Hillis and Larsen on short yardage and mix in play action with that line-up.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

Big D 44, agreed with you, how offense is behind the eight ball, this is what I said about it yesterday:

What is this thing McD keeps on preaching about playing for 60 minutes, does he mean for the Defense only, because he is certainly not talking about the Offense. All year long, the Offense has played 30 minutes at best, they have been basically completely absent during every 1st half this year, what’s up with that McD? I mean by now you would think you would come out into a game with a good plan of attack, but you have yet to do that, you respond well after a half adjusting to what is going on on the field, but unfortunately, in this game, in this league, it’s like too little too late. I think it’s grand time for you to re-assess how you prepare offensively for a game, because how you are doing it so far has not produced hardly anything in the first halves of 13 games. The post season might be upon us, it’s never too late to come up with a different game plan offensively. I, for one, have grown tired of seeing us accomplish zilch, nada, nothing offensively in the first halves of nearly every game so far. Isn’t anyone out there a bit bored with that also? McD will be great some day, but, man, he still has a long way to go to get there. When I said in pre-season it would take us three seasons to get real good considering the new system, I might of been right on. Hope not, but that would be ok I guess, as long as it’s for real. Now it’s kind of like a mirage, it looks great from a distance, but it’s not quite there when you get right down to it.

killerkod, you got your wish, I just watched McD’s news conference, the reporters had all the right questions about the short yardage game, McD just basically refused to address everyone’s concern, no big surprise there, just saying the calls are right, the RB running the plays is the right guy, Hillis couldn’t run the short yardage because he had to be the FB because Larsen went down (so why don’t you give a quickt hand off to the FB?), but if the line doesn’t do it’s job even Franco Harris won’t get that yard, whatever…. Points all well taken, but what a stubborn young man! He is just fooling himself and all of us turning a blind eye to his approach, he will run into that brick wall on short yardage doing exactly what he has called for all year regardless of the results, he has proven that so far and he will not sway from that path. He will stick it out with his 1st round draft choice on the dreaded 3rd or 4th and one, regardless of the result. Real sad indeed. Been there all year, I’m getting used to it, those downs are actually a good time to take a leak at the sports bar… I can’t watch them anymore.

All that been said, once I get over the fact that losing the SD game at home cost us the division title, we are still standing pretty as far as the wild card is concern, but with the number of teams that are only one game back now, we have placed ourselves in the position where we can no longer lose any game if we want to control our destiny. So, here is to hoping, like I found myself doing yesterday while watching the game, that we never get any closer than 3rd or 4th and three yards to go, so we will never have to see that Moreno dive up the middle again. LOL. One can always hope…

baylinorcrush… isn’t that the definition of insanity… doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results each time. I’m just saying… LOL

broncofannsd, insanity: derangement of mind or intellect; lunacy; madness, as per Webster. Lunacy fits the bill pretty well, IMO.

Can someone please explain to me why MD is so reluctant to use Hillis?
