Broncos at Chiefs: Second Quarter Notes

September 28th, 2008 - 11:38am by Adam Zinser

15:00: Johnson gains six yards, getting the first down. First-and-10 from the Denver 26.

14:20: Johnson catches a screen from Huard, and Boss Bailey reads the play perfectly, tackling Johnson for a seven-yard loss. Third-and-17 at the Denver 33.

A false start penalty on Damion McIntosh and a delay of game penalty back the Chiefs up five more yards. Third-and-22 from the Denver 38.

13:00: Huard completes his pass to Will Franklin for five yards, and out comes Novak to attempt a 48-yard field goal. It sails wide right. The Broncos take over at their own 38-yard line.

12:40: Cutler completes his pass to Hall, but Ben Hamilton is flagged for holding, pushing the Broncos back 10 yards. Now first-and-20 from the 28.

12:20: Graham can’t quite haul in Cutler’s pass. Second-and-20 from the 28.

12:00: Hall carries the ball, picking up just two yards on the run. Third-and-18 from the 30-yard line. Cutler completes a screen pass to Pittman, who evades tacklers and is finally taken down after a 40-yard gain. First-and-10 at the Kansas City 30-yard line.

10:45: Hall carries around the left end for a seven-yard gain. Second-and-three at the K.C. 23.

10:19: Third-and-three from the K.C. 23. Cutler completes to Stokley at the Chiefs’ 18 for a first down.

9:00: Cutler fires a bullet into the back of the endzone for Marshall for a 16-yard touchdown strike. Prater’s extra point is good. The Broncos have taken the lead, 7-6.

8:46: Prater kicks off to Dantrell Savage, who took it out to the 19 before getting absolutely laid out by Spencer Larsen. Savage’s helmet when flying on the hit.

A collective “Oooooh!” echoed through the press box on that one.

8:40: D.J. is flying all over the place on defense. Johnson caught another pass in the flats and was taken down immediately.

7:30: Third-and-five from the K.C. 24. Huard completes to Bowe, taking it out of bounds at the 40-yard line for a 16-yard gain. First down Chiefs.

6:59: Johnson carried the ball around right end, and he was taken down by Webster, whose helmet flew off as is his custom.

6:10: On third down, Huard’s pass falls incomplete as he tries to hit Tony Gonzalez. The Chiefs come out for their first punt of the day.

The punt goes out of bounds just inside the five-yard line.

5:54: Cutler and company start their third drive at their own five. Cutler’s pass is tipped up in the air and falls incomplete.

5:40: Young gets the first-down on an 18-yard gain up the left side.

5:00: Cutler completes a low pass down the middle to Scheffler for a 26-yard gain. First-and-10 at midfield.

4:00: Cutler pitches to Marshall in the backfield, but he is hit immediately Derrick Johnson, who forces a fumble. The Chiefs recover and return it all the way to the Denver two-yard line.

Chris Kuper left the field with the help of the training staff.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan has challenged the call of a fumble. The play is being reviewed.

Referee Mike Carey announced that the ruling of a fumble is correct. The Chiefs have the ball at the Denver two-yard line.

2:55: Larry Johnson takes it up the middle for the one-yard touchdown. 13-7, Chiefs back on top.

INJURY UPDATE: Kuper has a bruised left thigh, and his return is probable.

2:37: The Denver offense takes the field, and Kuper is back in the lineup. They start at their own 25.

Cutler complete to Marshall for a gain of 10 and a first down.

2:15: Cutler completes a pass deep down the middle to Stokley, who cuts to his left towards the sideline, getting a big block from Graham to give him some extra yards. It’s a 32-yard gain to the K.C. 33.

And that brings us to the two-minute warning.

2:00: Cutler completes his pass to Royal on a crossing route. He gains 15 yards before going out of bounds. First-and-10 from the 18.

1:55: Pass complete to Stokley for a gain of 8. Second-and-two from the 10.

1:18: After an incomplete pass to Marshall, it’s third-and-two. Cutler fires for Marshall in the corner of the endzone, but it falls incomplete.

In comes Matt Prater for his first field goal attempt — 28 yards.

The kick is no good, slipping wide right.

The score remains 13-7, Chiefs on top.

1:18: Huard hands off to Charles, who picks up seven yards. Kansas City must call a timeout, however, as they have an injured player down on the field.

The injured player was rookie starting left tackle Brandon Albert, out of the University of Virginia. He was taken off the field on a cart.

1:07: Charles gets the handoff again, but this time he is gang-tackled by a group of Broncos for no gain.

Denver has called a timeout now.

0:50: Peterson sacks Huard for a three-yard loss, and Denver takes its final timeout.

0:50: Dustin Colquitt punts it 54 yards, but Royal returns it 36 yards into Kansas City territory. The Bronco offense has the ball at the Chiefs’ 42.

0:35: Cutler completes to Royal across the middle on first down, but they have to run up and spike the ball to stop the clock. Now third-and-four at the K.C. 36.

The Chiefs take a timeout, their second of the half.

0:22: Cutler complete to Graham for a three-yard gain. It’s fourth down, and out comes Prater to attempt a 51-yard field goal.

But a false start penalty moves it back five yards. He will now attempt a 56-yard field goal.

And this one is good. Prater pulls the Broncos within three, 13-10.

INJURY UPDATE: Albert has an elbow injury, and his return is questionable.

0:11: Prater kicks a squib, and the Chiefs have the ball at their own 40.

0:07: The Chiefs kneel on the ball, amid loud boos from fans, and that ends the first half.

The Broncos trail the Chiefs, 10-13, at halftime.
