Broncos at Chiefs: Pregame Blog

December 6th, 2009 - 9:27am by Gray Caldwell

Here we are at Arrowhead Stadium for the first road game in the division since Week 6. Does it seem like the Broncos haven’t taken the field in forever to anyone else? Thanksgiving seems like a long time ago, so I’m sure there are some anxious Broncos fans ready to see the team back in action.

First things first, we would like to express our condolences to the family of Tim McKernan, who passed away at 69 on Friday. McKernan was one of the most recognizable fans in the NFL — you might remember him better as “Barrel Man.” He retired the Barrel after the 2007 season, but his presence was still felt at INVESCO Field at Mile High. His first barrel was on exhibit at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He will be missed not only in Denver, but throughout the NFL. Take a moment to remember a legendary member of Broncos Country today.

Here’s a look at an old video featuring McKernan.

On the field, not surprisingly everyone warming up is donning a hoodie. Plenty of red Chiefs jackets on one half of the field, and orange Broncos hoodies on the other. A few minutes ago, however, Josh Barrett walked onto the field in flip-flops, shorts and a T-shirt. Pretty bold move considering the chilly weather.

Speaking of which, here’s the weather report for today’s game:

Broncos at Chiefs Weather

Not many players are on the field at the moment — Chris Kuper, Matt Prater and D.J. Williams are all stretching as we are about an hour and a half away from kickoff. The gates to Arrowhead haven’t quite opened, so the stands are totally empty.

10:40 a.m. CST: Just got the inactives for today’s game — Tom Brandstater will serve as the team’s third quarterback, and Chris Baker, Brandon Gorin, LaMont Jordan, Brandon Lloyd, Kenny McKinley, Jarvis Moss and Seth Olsen are also inactive.

11:00 a.m. CST: For the Chiefs, QB Matt Gutierrez, CB Donald Washington, RB Dantrell Savage, LB Justin Rogers, C/G Andy Alleman, WR Mark Bradley, TE Jake O’Connell and LB Pierre Walters are inactive for the contest.

Just got some pictures from the field courtesy of Zach Eisendrath:

11:08 a.m. CST: Players from both teams are on the field in their respective uniforms. The Chiefs will wear red jerseys with white pants, and the Broncos are donning all white.

The Broncos are in a huddle in the end zone, and there’s plenty of excitement and jumping around. It looks like Mario Haggan is leading the group in a speech, and now the entire team is on the field ready to warm up.

11:32 a.m. CST: The Broncos have left the field — Mitch Berger is the last player through the tunnel, and now it’s just the Chiefs left on the field, running plays on about the 15-yard line headed toward the end zone. The stands are slowly filling up as we are approximately 30 minutes away from kickoff.

11:50 a.m. CST: Back come the Broncos special teamers, and Head Coach Josh McDaniels is jogging onto the field as well. Now the rest of the team is on its way out to a chorus of boos from the Arrowhead crowd. Many of the players are making their way toward the Denver sideline, but several have sprinted to the far end of the field to continue warming up.

11:59 a.m. CST: The national anthem is over and now it’s time for the coin toss. See you in the first half live blog.

It’s pretty chilly here. Zach Eisendrath came back up from taking pregame pictures on the field about 20 minutes ago, and he has reported that he still can’t feel his hands. He was out there for about an hour and 45 minutes.
