Broncos at Chiefs: Pregame Blog

December 5th, 2010 - 9:33am by Gabe Hiatt

You can smell the barbecue smoke wafting from the parking lot as you enter Arrowhead Stadium this morning. The tailgaters came out in full force to greet the Broncos on the way in.

It’s cold enough to see your breath in front of you, and one player is already on the field warming up.

Kickoff is about an hour and a half away, and Tim Tebow is throwing passes while sporting long sleeves and a beanie to deal with the cold.

Stay tuned for more pregame updates and pictures from the field.

10:41 a.m. CST: The Broncos have announced their inactives. Brian Dawkins, Andre’ Goodman, Laurence Maroney, Darcel McBath, Stanley Daniels, Eric Olsen and Demaryius Thomas will not be available today. Brady Quinn is listed as the third quarterback.

10:53 a.m. CST: Matt Prater, Britton Colquitt and Lonie Paxton are out on the field in full uniforms to practice field goals as Mike Priefer and Keith Burns watch their form.

11:00 a.m. CST: The Chiefs’ inactives are out as well. S Kendrick Lewis, CB Mike Richardson, CB Jackie Bates, RB Tim Castille, LB Charlie Anderson, C Rudy Niswanger, WR Chris Chambers and DT Anthony Toribio will not be suiting up for Kansas City.

11:12 a.m. CST: Kyle Orton has led the quarterbacks onto the field to warm up. Eddie Royal and Syd’Quan Thompson are practicing fielding punts, while Eric Decker, Perrish Cox, Cassius Vaughn and Spencer Larsen are practicing fielding kickoffs.

11:19 a.m. CST: The rest of the Broncos are now on the field. They’ve gathered for the team huddle and are now dispersing for to stretch and warm up.

Here are some pictures from the field courtesy of Gray Caldwell:

11:30 a.m. CST: The Broncos have already split up into their position groups for drills and now they’re running seven-on-seven drills and 11-on-11 plays.

11:38 a.m. CST: Both teams have retreated into the locker rooms to get ready for kickoff while fans are still trickling into the stadium. You can check the first-half blog for live updates on Sunday’s contest.

Now, somebody please correct me if I’m wrong about this, but if I remember right didn’t the Broncos only have to pay Shanahan until he was hired by another team? If this is true the whole head coaching money thing wouldn’t be as big of an issue. I thought that was what i read after he was fired. Again, somebody correct me if I’m wrong, it just kinda popped into my head all of a sudden. Idk if its already been talked about.

  2. Crazyhorserider says:

According to internet sources when Shanahan was sacked he had two years left on his contract at $7m a year.

Once Shanahan was hired elsewhere, the Denver Broncos, who fired Shanahan one year ago, will recoup $7 million in offset money over the next two seasons under the terms of the agreement they had with the coach.

Since McDaniels will have $6.9m left on his contract after this year this will mean the money they get back will cover paying off McD.

If this is right they will now be financially clear of paying any HC other than the one actually working for the Broncos.

  3. Crazyhorserider says:

Forgot to say that in my second paragraph above this was from ESPN in July 2009 so the one year ago relates to 2008.

    Apologies for the confusion.

  4. casinoroyal19 says:

OK thank you. so then, this whole paying 3 coaches thing wont be an issue then if everything is right. Good research Crazyhorserider!

  5. Crazyhorserider says:

By my calculations Shanny will have been paid $7m in 2009 and $7m in 2010 under his contract, but will have paid back $3.5m in 2010 and will pay back another $3.5m in 2011.

McD will cost the Broncos $3.5m in 2011 and $3.5m in 2012.

So Head Coach costs are as follows: -

    2009 $10.5m
    2010 $7m
    2011 $0
    2012 $3.5m

Any new coach will cost Bowlen extra if McD is fired.
