Broncos at Chiefs: Key Plays

November 25th, 2012 - 6:24pm by Stuart Zaas

Third-and-3 from the Denver 16: On the first drive of the game, the Chiefs marched down the field and were knocking on the door when they decided to go to a trick play on third down. Running back Peyton Hills took a direct snap and ran to his right before stopping and throwing across the field to quarterback Brady Quinn. Elvis Dumervil was there in coverage and the pass fell incomplete, forcing Kansas City to settle for a 34-yard field goal from Ryan Succop.

Fourth-and-12 from the Denver 18: After a 39-yard Britton Colquitt punt, Kansas City punt returner Javier Arenas brought the punt back 20 yards, setting up the Chiefs with a first down at the Denver 37. Kansas City turned that strong field position into points with a 22-yard field goal by Succop to open a 6-0 lead.

Third-and-5 from the Kansas City 43: With the Chiefs looking to add to their 6-0 advantage in the second quarter, linebacker Von Miller collected his 14th sack of the season, dropping Quinn for a 1-yard loss to bring up fourth down.

Third-and-8 from the Denver 33: Linebacker Wesley Woodyard ruined the Chiefs’ scoring plans with a third-down sack of Quinn. The play resulted in a loss of 9 yards and knocked Kansas City out of field goal range.

Third-and-1 from the Kansas City 29: Needing just 1 yard to continue a promising drive, Manning threw a quick pass to tight end Joel Dreessen, who extended the ball just past the first-down mark. After a measurement, the play was ruled a first down and five plays later the Broncos punched the ball in the end zone with a 7-yard touchdown catch by tight end Joel Dreessen to end the first half ahead 7-6.

Third-and-7 from the Denver 37: Quinn managed to find wide receiver Dwayne Bowe in front of cornerback Champ Bailey, but the 11-time Pro Bowler knew the down-and-distance situation and brought Bowe down immediately upon catching the pass 1-yard shy of the first-down mark. That stop led to a 49-yard field goal from Succop that would represent the final points the Chiefs would score on Sunday.

Third-and-2 from the Kansas City 42: Trailing 9-7 in the third quarter, the Broncos had reached Kansas City territory before encountering a third down. Once again, Manning went to one of his tight ends as this time it was Tamme who caught the pass, picking up 12 yards and a first down. On the next play, Manning went deep to Demaryius Thomas who beat his defender for a 30-yard touchdown.

Third-and-3 from the Denver 45: Looking to take time off the clock, the Broncos needed a third-down conversion to continue a drive late in the fourth quarter. With 3:35 to play and the Chiefs down to one timeout, Manning found Thomas for a 10-yard gain across the middle to keep the drive alive.

Third-and-7 from the Kansas City 42: After two more short runs, Denver was faced with another third down. He again targeted Thomas, this time deep down the sideline. Once again, the third-year receiver came up with a big catch, picking up 27 yards and topping the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

When we get pinned deep a number of things need to happen.
    1. First of all the punter needs to put on his 9 iron kicking shoe and have a good high punt
    2. The gunners need to get a clean release to get down and cover the punt before it goes in the endzone
    3. Our return man makes the decision to either let it go, fair catch, or return it.

It basically comes down to the punt return team jamming their guys so they don’t have a chance to cover the punt and our return man being smart of what option to select and when. That’s the only thing that we can control and if the punter goes all Tiger Woods and drops a pin seeker..well that’s just something we’ll have to deal with.

OT… I was watching that game, and when they showed the replay I was like wow… that was pretty Blatant!

Suh kicking Schaub in his Giblets was worse, but there is no place for any of that!!

  4. strandoftds82 says:

I told my buddy what my prediction was this week while we were watching the game. His reply (Your getting bold with that prediction). The real word was co____ky, wouldn’t let me post. LOL

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, yours was too bold to be true, LOL.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

Good thing is the Dane is a long shot this week, haha.

  7. strandoftds82 says:

I bet someone passed me up and has taken over 2nd place. LOL

  8. baylinorcrush says:

31-7 he had and at least three were better including sndvl with 30-7, so no points for the leader, thank god!

  9. strandoftds82 says:

    Wheh, Oh Man!

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Dbroncos82 maybe, we don’t know, he never posts his prediction, sly dude, he already has 17 points like you.

  11. Bronco_Turtle says:

I bet yesterday was a crazy good day at the Sports book! Sounds like not a single person here didn’t pick the Broncos to Cover and the Over…

The Double Digit Spread is something that Gamblers learn to avoid, especially when a Team like Denver is playing in a place where they historically underperform

Only one guy on the entire blog had the stones to go Under 30! and for that Strandsky you will earn a much deserved reward…

  12. strandoftds82 says:

And My condolences go out to Robert Ayers and his family for their loss.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

If I get second with 5 points I could be the one to pass you with 18 points, but I’m probably dreaming….

  14. strandoftds82 says:

Ya, I did that last week, the sly dog. I might do the same this week. Fool me once. LOL

  15. strandoftds82 says:

All in fun Bay! To catch up with The Dane, we need two scores. Yikes!

  16. Bronco_Turtle says:

Our neighbor at the Ranch is the son of Lamar Hunt… His name is Dan. I feel really bad for him, so much so that I haven’t given him any crap about his team because they are so awful!!! Yesterday was the first year on Bronco Day that he didn’t bring a Cheifs flag out and put on his entry way on Game Day… Kind of Sad (for him!!!)

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Problem is there are more who enter the official one than the bloggers contest so we never can know until Gray posts it, hopefully he does it early this week, the suspense is killing me.

Did you get that Gray? LOL.

  18. strandoftds82 says:

    LMAO!!

  19. strandoftds82 says:

So what did you think of the play that we got flagged on as hitting a defenseless WR. I think it was on Carter if I remember correctly. It was 3rd and 10 and we made a good play I think. I was mad about that call.

  20. Bronco_Turtle says:

It was Woodyard that got flagged… for hitting Charles in the Face!!! Great hit, good football play, but a violation of the new rules!!!

Wood deserves props… He is turning into a stud

  21. strandoftds82 says:

With you Bay, You posted Monday Morning on que, just like the train arriving at 5:15 without fail. HaHa! Kudos to you for that by the way!

  22. Bronco_Turtle says:

I thought the flag was an insult to the game of football Strand, as I feel most of the new rules that limit the Defense are

  23. strandoftds82 says:

And if Woodyard would having been watching for the football, he could have picked it off, but it was a bang bang play. I still think it was a bogus call. If Woodyard had of wrapped him it would not have been a flag, it was a good solid hit.

  24. strandoftds82 says:

    Agreed!

  25. strandoftds82 says:

A play like that when a team makes a stop, takes away from the game. These refs are getting ridiculous. But their not as horrible as the scab refs. LOL

  26. strandoftds82 says:

The game coming up with T.B. is going to be a high scoring affair by both teams I think, and a close score to boot.

  27. Bronco_Turtle says:

Should be a good game! I look forward to this game because TB has real Strengths to match up with our weaknesses and vice-versa! It will be fun to watch Muscle Hamster do his thing, as I’m pretty sure most all of us about plotzed when we traded down a second time in the first Rd of the draft and let him get away!

  28. strandoftds82 says:

I was wanting Martin too. Gotta move on!

  29. strandoftds82 says:

I hope we go after a Big RB in the draft and in FA. I heard a few weeks ago that all 3 of Pittsburgh’s RB’s are FA’s when the off season hits. Just a small taste. I don’t dare want Mendenhall, but the two others are enticing. Stay tuned in the off season. We have a SB team in the running. LOL

  30. sndvl says:

The Good- Obviously the win at Arrowhead for the 2nd year in a row. The defense holding KC to 3′s and Knowshon with a nice, much needed, performance.

The Bad- The run D wasn’t as stout as we’ve seen. The pass rush being stalemated. And until the garbage time INT we were -1 in the turnover dept.

The Ugly- Haha! What was Manning thinking (or seeing) when he threw that ball to Decker that was picked off. He’s human afterall…
Praters two misses were pretty ugly too.

The Funny- Knowshon running out of his shoe!

I’d also like to mention, how nice it must feel for Bruton. The day after ND clinched their BCS berth, he corrals the game ending INT off another golden domer!

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!!!!!!!!

  31. strandoftds82 says:

I felt uneasy all game. The Pass Rush was off. And Prater two misses. I hope he gets that fixed. It’s gotta be his mechanics.

  32. Bronco_Turtle says:

Great Movie sndvl! And Great Post… I hadn’t thought about the Quinn/Bruton connection so I bet you are very correct in you assessment!!!

I was also disappointed with how our DL was really beaten at the point of attack by KC’s OL which was suppose to be patchwork at best… not encouraging with TB coming to town. KC handled Von in the run game differently than any other team to date this season, by simply allowing him to overpursue and then sealing him off

  33. strandoftds82 says:

As some of you has said, this game coming up will be a nice gauging tool too see how we match up in the playoffs. T.B. is no slouch by any means.

  34. strandoftds82 says:

Well, I’m off to go do a few jobs today.

  35. Bronco_Turtle says:

Later Strandsky! I’ll be here most of the, I’m applying for school in the Spring and have a Radio Commercial to record at noon! (wish me luck, it’s my first paid singing gig!!!)

  36. Bronco_Turtle says:

    most of the day*

  37. wolfedom says:

I thought Autry was the singing cowboy.
