Broncos at Chiefs: First Quarter Notes

September 28th, 2008 - 11:04am by Adam Zinser

15:00: Prater kicks off to Jamaal Charles who returned it out to the 21-yard line from two-yards deep in the endzone.

But a hold on the Chiefs backs it up to the 11.

Starters on defense for the Broncos: Elvis Dumervil, Marcus Thomas, Kenny Peterson, John Engelberger, Nate Webster, D.J. Williams, Boss Bailey, Champ Bailey, Marlon McCree, Marquand Manuel and Dre’ Bly.

14:00: After an initial run went for just a couple yards, Larry Johnson burst up the middle for 65 yards, a career-long run.

12:40: Colby Smith carries the ball twice, gaining first six and then 3 yards. It’s third-and-one at the Denver 12.

12:07: Johnson gains three and gets a first-down despite being hit in the backfield by Bly. Now first-and-goal from the nine yard line.

11:30: Engelberger bursts through the line to take down Johnson in the backfield for a loss of one.

11:30: Damon Huard completes his first pass of the game to Johnson in the flats. He gains five yards before being taken down by Boss Bailey. Third-and-goal from the five.

10:00: Huard throws complete to Charles in the flats, but he gains nothing. Nick Novak comes out and boots a 23-yard field goal through the uprights. The Chiefs take the early lead, 3-0.

9:05: Novak kicks off for the Chiefs; Andre Hall is back deep for the Broncos.

Hall takes it out to the 20.

9:01: Starters on offense for Denver:

Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffler, Casey Wiegmann, Ryan Clady, Eddie Royal, Brandon Marshall, Selvin Young, Ben Hamilton, Chris Kuper, Ryan Harris and Jay Cutler.

9:01: On the first offensive play, Cutler hands off to Young for no gain.

8:30: Cutler fires complete down the middle to Royal, who breaks a tackle. But then Royal fumbles the ball, and it’s recovered by Brandon Carr of the Chiefs. Carr returns it to the 26 of Denver.

8:13: Huard throws to Dwayne Bowe, and it looks like he fumbles, but the refs call it incomplete.

8:00: Huard completes a screen to Johnson, but D.J. Williams read it and took down Johnson for a three-yard loss. Third-and-thirteen from the 29.

7:30: Huard gets pressured and taken down but not before he completes the ball to Bowe for 17 yards. First down at the Denver 12.

7:00: Johnson carries the ball eight yards. Second-and-two at the Denver four yard line.

5:00: Johnson runs on third-and-two from the Denver four but gains nothing. Novak comes back out for another field goal. This one, a 21-yarder, is also good. 6-0, Chiefs on top.

4:38: Novak kicks off to Hall, who takes it out to the 20.

4:33: Cutler complete to Marshall for four yards on the first play of the Broncos’ second offensive series.

3:45: Young carries the ball close to a first down, gaining five yards. Third-and-short, with less than half a yard to go.

3:20: Michael Pittman gets into the action, carrying around the left end for four yards and the first down.

1:57: Rookie defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey stopped Young for no gain, and then Cutler overthrew Scheffler down the middle. Third-and-nine at the 34 — Cutler is sacked by Derrick Johnson and Brian Johnston, losing nine yards. Kern punts away, sailing it out of bounds at the Kansas City 48 yard line.

That’s the first true sack of Cutler in 2008. The only other credited sack went to the San Diego defense on the fumble that wasn’t two weeks ago.

1:16: Huard completes to Mike Cox who is upended by Bly after a three-yard gain.

0:45: Huard complete to Bowe, who is run out of bounds by McCree after an eight yard gain. First down Chiefs at the Denver 41.

0:11: Huard complete to Bowe again for a gain of nine. That ends the first quarter. When the teams switch sides, the Chiefs will have a second-and-one at the Denver 32.

  9. broncoinexile says:

even though it’s only six points, if we play like this we don’t deserve to be 1-3, let alone 4-0.

  10. orange blue man says:

    6-0 a lot better than 14-0
