Broncos at Cardinals: Second Quarter Notes

August 29th, 2008 - 8:45pm by Adam Zinser

15:00: First play of the second quarter is a handoff from Leinart to J.J. Arrington for a one-yard gain. The Cardinals face a third-and-long from deep in their own territory. He could have been sacked in the endzone, but Leinart steps up and connects with Jerheme Urban for a 23-yard gain and a first down.

12:30: Leinart completes a deep ball down the right hash to Urban for 35 yards, who beat Foxworth on the route, moving the Cardinals into the redzone.

11:30: Leinart hits Leonard Pope on a high pass in the middle of the endzone for a 17-yard touchdown. Cardinals take the lead, 7-3.

11:20: Alridge continues to get the majority of the carries, taking the first carry of this series six yards. He follows it up with a one-yard run, setting up third-and-three. Hackney scrambles for the first down to keep the Denver offense in business.

11:25: Rackers kicks off to Alridge and Russell, and Alridge takes it a few yards deep in the endzone. He hesitates at first, but then charges out, getting to the 26-yard line before being taken down.

9:25: Keary Colbert picks up three yards on an end-around, and Alridge takes the ball through a gap up the middle for 27, moving the Broncos well into Arizona territory.

8:00: Alridge goes out and Pittman comes in, with Cecil Sapp at fullback. Sapp moves the Broncos into the redzone on a rush around the left end.

7:00: Clifford Russell nearly makes it into the endzone on an end-around for 13 yards that is stopped at the one. Pittman caps the drive off, taking the ball up the middle for the score. Broncos retake the lead, 10-7.

6:14: Prater kicks off to Arrington and Morey, with Arrington fielding it four yards deep and running it out. Spencer Larsen, returning to his hometown tonight, takes down Arrington at the 19.

6:00: Leinart completes a long one on a crossing route to rookie Early Doucet, but the play is wiped out when the ref ruled he was bobbling the ball on his way out of bounds. Arizona Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt has challenged the play.

After review, the ref reverses the call on the field. Doucet maintained control of the ball. It is a 21-yard gain, giving the Cardinals a first down at the 39.

5:30: The Cardinals get into their hurry-up offense, and Leinart launches one down the left sideline to Urban. Karl Paymah gets flagged for pass interference, giving the Cardinals a first down on the Denver 24.

4:30: Leinart tries to complete a backwards pass, but it falls short, being ruled a fumble. After several players scramble after the ball, Denver recovers!

3:30: After an incomplete pass and a short run by Alridge, the Broncos face a third-and-eight. Hackney complete to Pittman out of the backfield, who picks up three. Paulescu comes back out for his second punt of the night, and it’s a wobbly one, going 41 yards. The Arizona offense is back on the field at their own 36.

2:37: Hamza Abdullah contines to make plays, registering his second big hit of the quarter as he lowers his shoulder to push wideout Lance Long out of bounds.

2:00: We come to the two-minute warning, with the Cardinals facing a third-and-seven from the Denver 45.

1:57: Leinart complete to Lance Long, who jumps out of bounds just past the first-down marker, stopping the clock.

1:53: Wesley “Optimus Prime” Woodyard (as he was known at the University of Kentucky) took down Arrington after a short two-yard gain.

INJURY UPDATE: Louis Green went out earlier with a finger injury, and his return is questionable.

1:35: Leinart hands off to Arrington, who makes his way up the middle 26-yards for the touchdown. 14-10, Cardinals back on top.

1:28: Rackers kicks off to Alridge and Russell yet again, with Alridge taking it out to the 20.

Time for a little two-minute offense.

1:24: Hackney complete to Russell on the left sideline for a gain of six, and he takes it out of bounds to stop the clock. He follows that up with another connection to Russell for 10 yards and a first down. A false start moves the ball back 10-yards and winds 10 seconds off the clock.

0:19: Hackney complete to Colbert on the right sideline, pushed out of bounds by rookie Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie for a gain of four. Third-and-four.

0:15: Hackney complete to Russell on the left sideline for eight and first down.

0:09: Hackney scrambles for a nine-yard gain before being taken down. That ends the first half, and I’ll be back for the second half after I go snag a few snacks.

Well, the Broncos are looking pretty good tonight. I sure wish Paymah would learn to cover a receiver, tho.

Optimus Prime? That’s awesome. I’m such a fan of Woodyard’s. That guy needs to be on the field as much as possible.

So, who’s winning the punting battle?
    Any predictions?

  5. Cutlerizer says:

I get the feeling Kern will win it. Although he is less experienced, he has the stronger leg. But it seems like Paulescu might be edging him based on performance in the pre-season. Anyone see anything different?
