Broncos at Cardinals: Quotables

August 31st, 2012 - 4:24am by Stuart Zaas

Head Coach John Fox

On the game
“We didn’t play any of our starters and then some. I think we had 25 guys that did not play. We wanted to look at our down at the bottom part of the roster. I thought some guys helped themselves and I thought we made some improvement. We’ve struggled over the last couple of weeks in the second halves of the preseason games. We’ll watch the tape – we have a lot of tough decisions. Tomorrow is never a fun day.”

On RB Knowshon Moreno
“He played well. He’s a guy that’s made steady improvement in each of the games, which is a credit to him, Eric Studesville, his coach, Greek, his training staff. They brought him back from his ACL very well and I think we saw evidence of that.”
On whether Moreno can make the team without playing special teams
“I keep those matters more inside the club, but those are things we discuss when we make decisions.”

On QB Caleb Hanie
“I think Caleb stepped in last week and played very well. Without looking at the tape and all the checks and going over all the stuff, I thought it was adequate, yes.”
On whether the game would have gone to OT if Weber didn’t complete the pass to Orton
“That’s not reality. I don’t know (laughing). Not reality, so at the end of the day, I was glad it went the way it did.”

On Omar Bolden’s kick return touchdown
“It was big, I think Omar is a guy that had a couple injuries early in camp. He’s gotten more playing time as we’ve gone through these last three preseason games. Again, return capability is something that we’re definitely looking for and looking for depth in that position. It was a heck of a return. It’s nice to see a kid come home and be able to do something like that.”

Quarterback Caleb Hanie

On the game
“Struggled a little bit to get any points on the board, so obviously we didn’t do exactly what we wanted to do. I thought we ran the ball really well. O-line did a great job for the most part, giving us some time to see down the field. For some reason we just couldn’t get it all the way in.”

On sacks
“They did a good job just keeping on going. A few times I remember sitting back there, sitting back there, but there were a couple times it just kind of happened.”

On final preseason game
“It’s always tough. You just hope you did enough to prove yourself. Let the chips fall from there. You can only control what you control. Some of the guys you’ve been playing with and come to know and are friends with aren’t going to be here. It’s always tough to see that. But hopefully it works out well for everybody.”

Quarterback Brock Osweiler

On his 94-yard drive
“It was good to finish on a high note. Just would’ve been a little bit better if I ended up in the end zone. But we got points out of the deal, and that’s all that really mattesr. I think tonight there were some good things, there were some bad things that we need to clean up, but that’s part of the process. We’ll just keep working and getting better.”

On CB Omar Bolden
“Omar kind of lit a spark for the team with his return. The return team, they made some great blocks, but Omar was able to show off his speed a little bit. I think the team really picked up a little bit of energy after that.”

On whether he’s happy with his preseason performance
“Yeah, sometimes. I wish I would’ve played better in certain situations. But I think the main thing that happened during preseason is I learned a lot. There were some weeks where I’d make a mistake and then I clean that up and I wouldn’t make it the next week. As long as I continue to progress, I think things will be OK.”

Linebacker Danny Trevathan

On the game
“I think it went pretty well. I think we just went out there and played. There was a lot of stuff surrounding this, but we just went out there and played and left our hearts on the field.”

On whether the game has slowed down for him
“Yeah, you just have to get in tune with it. Because, the NFL is quick and everybody knows what they’re doing – and they’re going to do it. You have to be sure in what you’re doing. Kind of playing around and playing with them has helped me pick up the game a little bit.”

On leading the team in tackles against the Cardinals
“I don’t really look at that. As long as we perform well as a defense, it’s going to take care of itself. My responsibilities and if I take care of my stuff and we perform on defense, everything gets everything.”

Safety Jim Leonhard

On getting back out on the field
“It felt great. Obviously, I’ve been away from a long time, a long road back, it just felt good to get back out on the field and get a couple hits in. Knock a little bit of the rust off, I’m feeling good, it felt good to be out there.”

On getting some game action
“I always feel like I have something to prove. It’s great to get out there. It’s been a long road back. This is the first time I put on full pads. To come into a game and do that, it’s a unique situation, but it felt good to get out there and just communicate and get a couple tackles in. Hopefully, I put enough on film.”

On the touchdown catch he defended
“It’s tough. I thought I was going to have a chance for an interception. I saw him turning back for the outside and I figured the ball was to the outside. I knew I just had to put a hit on him and I thought I did a decent job. The ball bounced around a little bit. In hindsight, you always look back and try to think of what you’d do different but the guy made a great play, and you have to give him a little credit.”

Running back Ronnie Hillman

On how the game went
“I think it went pretty good. I just showed a little bit of what I can do and just get my feet wet a little bit more than last week. Just trying to make the team.”

On if he’s been waiting to play more in a game
“When you miss two games of preseason, you expect to perform. It kind of irritates you and bothers you. Once you finally get out there, it’s like okay, now you’re calm and you’re ready to go.”

On if things slowed down for him in this game
“I think it slowed down a lot. Last week, I was like a chicken with his head cut off. I think this slowed down a lot for me. I was able to get a lot more done.”

Cornerback Omar Bolden

On returning kicks
“If it’s seven (yards) deep, we’re bringing it out. Anything past that we’ll take a knee and play it safe. But I had the opportunity to bring it out, it’s preseason, they want to see what you can do, so I just tried to make the most of my opportunities.”

On whether the TD helped his resume
“Oh, no doubt about it. Everybody’s out here fighting for scraps. It’s just the nature of the business. Some guys are going to get let go. I’m just trying to make sure I’m not one of those guys.”

On keeping his balance on the return
“It was pretty tough. I actually thought one of my teammates was a Cardinals player – I tried to give him a stiff-arm. Come to find out he’s actually just trying to keep me up and keep me inbounds.”

I dont get why people (BT and Wolfedom) Act like my opinion on what Denver should do is what they will do. Lol. I have said before that I doubt much of what I said will actually happen. Just things I think should happen. Disagree all you want. Its my opinion based on their performance from this offseason.

It makes me laugh when people tell me that I doubt they listen to you or any form of that. Because guess what? I doubt it to. Im a 20 year old guy in Alaska. Not John Fox or Elway or anyone else with the team. I have NO say whatsoever and I know that. Doesnt mean I cant have my opinion.

    Morning Broncos Country
AB sometimes people don’t understand what my opinion means they just see what you say and run along thinking that you know everything don’t let it bother you

  3. sndvl says:

    3 QBs
    4 RBs
    1 FB
    5 WRs
    3 TEs
    8 OL
    8 DL
    7 LBs
    6 CBs
    5 S
    1 K
    1 P
    1 LS

  4. marshisboss says:

Sndvl I was going with 6 WRs and 5 CBs

  5. alaskanbronco06 says:

I think 6 and 6. But we will no doubt at least keep more WRs than CBs.

If we keep 5 WRs then we will be tiring out our WRs a lot. Wont be able to run many 5 WR looks and if one or two goes down we are SOL

  6. alaskanbronco06 says:

In other news first cut I know for today has a Bronco connection……Marcus Thomas was cut by the Giants he tweeted out. He followed it us saying he found a toll free way to the facility’s so it cost him nothing to get cut however cost him to get back to his place lol all tweeted out by him

  7. alaskanbronco06 says:

Just found out via Michael Lombardi that most teams will be waiting till 11-12 pm ET to announce the cuts.

Im sure someplayers (Like Thomas) will announce it themselves.

  8. killerkod says:

    Morning Gang!

Watched the highlights and I really enjoyed seeing bolden’s return for a TD. Might have earned himself a special teams spot with that one right there. Guess we’ll all know soon enough. 7pm EST is the deadline I think.

AB, You mean you don’t have a red phone connected to JE’s office? LMAO

And btw BT……..there’s no such thing as the manning “error”. PM has already made our team better and will continue to get better and better as the season goes on. It’s a new ERA of Broncos football where we might see some first downs and scoring in ALL four quarters.

  9. alaskanbronco06 says:

LOL Kod…..Shhhh people arnt supposed to know that I do!!!! Lol

Can I say that Manning has more touchdown passes then the ALL Jets QBs? He has double their amount actually…..

  10. killerkod says:

Sorry to spill the beans man!! Hahaha

Think Elway will make any moves today, other than the cuts of course. Guess it depends on who’s available.

  11. Royalbroncofan1 says:

Last season Broncos only carrried 5 WR but I see what you’re saying ab as this is a different offense.

  12. OrangeTsunami says:

Hey y’all. ILMSDB!!! That’s impressive that Marcus Thomas was able to avoid toll roads in NJ…… Lol

I’m really happy with Osweiler. He should be starting his JUNIOR season right now, so I expect him to make mistakes, but he seems to bounce back from them – which can not be taught. He is already going through his progressions in this early stage of his career, with is the hardest thing for a young QB to learn at the next level. His preseason stats are not a good gauge, as he had a TON of dropped passes. Very encouraged with this kid, and can’t wait to see him develop!

Caleb Hanie’s Broncos career is over. He is simply a below average QB, and it makes no sense for him to occupy a roster spot IMO. Weber will clear waivers, and be available to us on the PS, should something happen to PM. We need that extra for another RB, DT, LB, or S.

  13. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Lol Kod!!!

I think we will see some trades. (Moreno and some others)

RBF1 yea we arnt as hindered with Manning and can run more 5 WR looks more regularly then we did last year even with Orton.

    Morning OT.

  14. alaskanbronco06 says:

We will be scanning the waiver wire to look to bolster the defensive depth

    http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_21439922/wave-cuts-coming?source=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

  15. OrangeTsunami says:

I think Omar Bolden, Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan, and Steven Johnson all officailly stamped their roster tickets last night. I think all four of these guys could be really good! I was also VERY encouraged with Ronnie Hillman! Gerel Robinson was also impressive and I wouldn’t be surprised if he made the team, albeit unlikely. I really hope he clears waivers if he falls short…

  16. OrangeTsunami says:

What’s good AB? I saw that rule change too, funny we were just discussing that the other day.. Maybe Goodell is reading?? Lol

  17. alaskanbronco06 says:

Lol OT I thought something along those lines. Was rather funny that is was only earlier this week.

Man last night a LB for Kent State returned a muffed punt 58 yards……the wrong way…..

  18. OrangeTsunami says:

This may not be popular opinion, and I’m not a fan of either guy really, but as far as Moreno and Ayers, just remember that football is a business, and the players are assets. When running a business, one has to properly manage its assets to be successful, and to let something with value (perceived or not) go, in favor for something with little value is not good business.

If they can’t be traded, look for them to both make the team IMO. It’s certainly not fair, as other guys might be more deserving of a chance, but life never promised to be fair.

  19. sndvl says:

My thinking is our TEs are receivers anyway. And with our stable of running backs and their ability to catch out of the backfield, we may only need 5 at the WR spot.

Which gives us the chance to carry the extra DB instead. And we all know how important it is these days to cover WRs!!!!

Who knows. It’s just my opinion anyway…

  20. Bronco_Turtle says:

and a good oppinion it is sndvl!!! :)

I like the idea of carrying a five CB’s and Five Safeties, with the fifth being a physical speedster to help with those funny alignments that teams will show with big talented TE’s like the Patriots did last year

  21. CARAMELLOO says:

Time to get our squad down to a solid 53!! I’m wondering if we will pick up some guys who are cut by other teams. Anyone have thoughts on us picking up a few guys from other teams.

  22. Bronco_Turtle says:

    http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_21439922/wave-cuts-coming?source=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+dp-sports-broncos+%28Denver+Post%3A+Sports%3A+Broncos%29

I’m sure most of you have seen this already… The DP thinks that Beal and Jackson are fighting for the final DL Roster spot, Maybe they counted Unrein and we can Cut him and Keep both Beal and Jackson!

  23. Bronco_Turtle says:

    http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/2012/08/30/espn-analyst-jon-gruden-88-realistic-expectation-2012-broncos/15235/

I’m pretty sure I saw an 8-8 prediction in our Contest… Gruden thinks you are in the right neighborhood

  24. Bronco_Turtle says:

AB… don’t flatter yourself… neither of us feel that way, we simply like to have our own oppinions, and after debating you for about two posts it becomes evident you value no one else’s oppinions but your own… it is a bit tiresome is all as most of the time you are either cut/pasting assessments or just blowing smoke…

No hard feelings, and please don’t look upon this as an attack or condemnation… just a reponse to you using my name in your post is all

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

  25. Bronco_Turtle says:

and 10 Points for you KOD! I see you did some back reading!!!

‘Error’ or ‘Era’ I think is too early to call, but this season will go along way toward deciding!!!

  26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I think its a little premature to say PM has made the whole team better or that he will do this or do that. He just finally put a solid preseason outing in week 3. Giving as how he has been out of football for a while. He gets a pass. But the year will truely determine it. Im intrested to see what he can do for us, even tho i was not a fan of the acquisition.

Saw only the first half of yesterdays game … as it was the 4th preseason game and i didn’t care. (barely saw any preseason games actually) … saw enough of Trevathan the Leviathan to give him a thumbs up to make the 23. Clearly still raw but has good instincts and a nose for the ball careers. Reminds me of Woodyards rookie season. Undrafted but in preseason the man was on FIRE. All over the field. If nothing else the leviathan will be a great special teamer.

Congrats to Bolden. I think he can be a splendid CB at some point but now we need him in the return game. Heard of his skills. Glad i finally saw it. With the loss of Royal and Vaughn I was a little blue and grim on the chances of our return game (not a fan of willis KRs but as a receiver yes) but Bolden made me feel a lot better with that return. Seasons upon us. Lets have fun on the blogs as usual. For the first time I have no season record prediction … Anyway,

    Later days,

    TRB out…

  27. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT you are no better. To you only your opinion matters at lleast I listen to yours and with my opinion it is backed by the play on the field. Also I havnt posted much at all till the other day when I started posting again and have done a lot more than that and pasting my assessments? I havnt pasted anything on here. All of my assessments have been my own.

Also you jumping on me cause I think Ayers should go after a full offseason of sub par performance when during the game when a player made 1 bad play you were saying cut….Kind of hypocritical. At least mine is based off of all offseason/preseason

  28. alaskanbronco06 says:

As for what I said about taking my opinion as what they will do that was more to Wolfedom who actually said that I have no say in what the front office does. And thats just a big no duh.

  29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

okay lets stop defending opinions to this extent or arguing over opinions please. With so much backing and trying to prove this and that, people make opinions start to sound like gospel or unquestionably correct. Been here long enough to know the back and forth cycle ends you no where. Statement, feedback, rebutal. That should be about it or things tend to get heated. Sometimes just gotta let it die. Takes 2 to have a dissagreement …. most of the time anyway lol.

Can’t wait for regular season! come on Sept 9th!

  31. killerkod says:

Here’s something we all should agree on……..

    Can’t wait for Broncos football!!!!!

    Crush those Steelers!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  32. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

I predict at least 6 sacks coming from our beloved Broncos defense. Slay the Berger!!

  33. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

    as well as 2 picks!

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

AB… saying any player gets cut after one bad play is a simple form of humor to demonstrate said bad play, nothing more; you have to be able to see that right?

TRB, good to see you! Are you going to the Baltimore game this year?

And I agree, Can’t wait till the 9th!!!

  35. alaskanbronco06 says:

BT you can say that but you defended that player being cut. So that kinda takes away from the “joke”

  36. killerkod says:

Lol@orange…….I like the spirit but big Ben is one of the hardest guys to take down so I think 6 sacks is a little over ambitious. Lol I’ll def take a couple though!

  37. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

yeah…haha you are right but hopefully we open some eyes and let those critics eat crow! so annoying!

  38. Bronco_Turtle says:

I said it during every game AB… accept the one I went to Watch… if a player that makes a bad play and happens to be on my cut list, well maybe he is there for a reason… make any sense?

  39. Bronco_Turtle says:

    except*

  40. OrangeTsunami says:

My posts are just opinions too! For all I know, we’ll end up keeping Hanie, and cut Moreno and Ayers…… :D

  41. alaskanbronco06 says:

Hmm same with Ayers being on mine. But I thought when you said that stuff you were “joking” you did just say it was humor now that a bad play gets them on your cut list

  42. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

in my opionion we should drop Hanie and keep Weber. I think he looks good.

  43. killerkod says:

At one point I thought having hanie would be a better option cause he has experience. But really! If PM goes down, The season will be toast either way so why not just let the kid get the reps if required. He’s the future so why not start prepping him from the get go.

  44. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

ive heard from various people that Osweiler just isnt ready and it would hurt his development and stuff. obviously i wouldnt know because i dont watch preseason games so i just hear by word of mouth.

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Id rather have kept our last starting QB as a back up than hanie. I thought he was decent, been dissapointed so far. At this point make broke second string and accelerate his learning process. Won’t happen tho. They don’t want a rookie backing up PM incase he goes down, which is a legitimate worry in my book. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that but at the point, hanie is just sucked up preseason reps brock coulda had, cuz from what I heard, peyton took all the reg season reps on the colts.

Sup BT. Im good man. Glad to be back on. Football kinda took a back seat to life this offseason … as far as the broncos game in Baltimore … YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA BOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! Ill be in there lol. My girl got us tickets for my birthday. Saved me the trouble cuz i woulda gone eitherway lol. First live broncos game. Looking forward to it.

    Later days, TRB

  46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

ps: kinda conflicted, I have both Mike Wallace and Big Ben for my fantasy team. Ill start vick but not sure if i can bench Wallace. Darn Wallace. Only reason i have him is because someone snagged marshall right before my pick. Tears rolled down my eyes. lol

    later days,

    TRB

  47. OrangeTsunami says:

The Detriot Lions have cut Alphonso Smith… Hopefully no one picks him up, and I’ll never have to read or hear his name again…

  48. strandoftds82 says:

I was impressed with Danny Trevathan`s play last night. Just like in college trevathan was a tackling machine last night and has a nose for the football. I`m going to go out on a limb and say not only does he make the team, but he`ll start at some point this year and turn some heads in Denver. This LB has the (IT) I believe to be a rising player in the NFL.

  49. alaskanbronco06 says:

Dolphins are fielding calls about Matt moore. Anyone think we will look into him?

OT I agree. Sooner I stop hearing about Smith the better.

Strand I’ve been high on Trev for a while.
