Broncos at Bengals: Second Half Live Blog

September 13th, 2009 - 12:33pm by Kyle Sonneman

Q3 15:00: Bengals will receive the second half kickoff. Andre Caldwell is back deep, but Prater sends him five-deep for the touchback.

Q3 14:57: Two short completions and the Bengals have a first down at the 34-yard line. Palmer is being victimized by his receivers dropping the ball, this time Jeremi Johnson drops the first down pass.

Q3 13:00: Third-and-seven, Palmer with running backs on each side, finds Coles… but he drops another one. Fourth down, and Eddie Royal is back for Huber’s kick. Royal looks for space, but doesn’t find much and there is a flag. But the refs pick up the flag, first down Broncos at the 14.

Q3 12:33: Knowshon Moreno gets the first carry of the half, but he slips and loses four yards. And the Broncos are going the wrong direction as Daniel Graham is whistled for a false start. A short run by Moreno and it is third-and-13… Orton hits Marshall, but he is short of the first down. Kern is back out, and it goes off the side of his foot, good field position for the Bengals.

Q3 10:07: Bengals start their drive at the Broncos 45-yard line. On second down Mario Haggan comes blazing in for the sack and loss of 10 yards. Third-and-14, sacked again, this time by Darrell Reid.

Q3 8:23: The Broncos will start pushed back again, as Jack Williams is flagged for an illegal block on the punt. First down at the five… The Bengals are pumping up the crowd as the Broncos have it deep.

Q3 8:00: First down Broncos, Orton hits Graham for a 10-yard gain, ball at the 17-yard line.

Q3 6:33: Eight-yard gain on first down for Moreno who looks shaken up following the run… as does Peyton Hillis. Buckhalter steps in on the next play and gets 11 for another first down.

Q3 5:00: Orton hits Marshall across the middle, who is hit hard by the rookie Rey Maualuga but hangs on to the ball for a decent gain. After an offsides penalty on the Bengals, Buckhalter is tripped up for yard loss. Third-and-two… Orton looks for Hillis, but he can’t hang on. Fourth down and out comes the punting unit. Kern gets a punt off, but the Broncos are flagged for a false start. On his second attempt, his punt is fielded by Crosby who is brought down by Haggan.

Q3 4:13: Bengals start the drive at 17, abut are tackled for a five yard loss on first down.

**INJURY UPDATE** Moreno took a blow to the head and his return is probable.

Q3 3:20: D.J. Williams almost picked one on second down, but the ball fell incomplete… A third down reception has the Bengals close to a first down, but they are going to punt to Royal instead. Royal returns the ball to the 34-yard line.

Q3 2:29: First down, Orton has all day and finds Scheffler streaking open. First down, gain of 29 yards. Ball at the Bengals 37-yard line.

Q3 1:16: Two short runs, one by Orton, and the Broncos have a third-and-five… Orton solo in the gun, finds Stokley but he drops it. Fourth down, and out come Matt Prater. This one will be from 50, snap, set, kick… good. Broncos 6 – Bengals 0; 00:14 left in the third quarter.

Q3 00:14: Caldwell can only get the ball to the 15-yard line, where the Bengals will have it with time running out in the third quarter. Palmer hits Ochocinco, but flags on the play. Sure looked like Ochocinco pushed off, he did and there was an illegal man downfield as well. Bengals pushed back and with that the third quarter comes to an end.

Q4 15:00: Bengals first-and-17 from their eight-yard line gain nine on first down, six on second down and face third-and-two… Palmer looks for Caldwell but the rookie Alphonso Smith breaks it up. Big play by Smith and it is fourth down. Royal waits for the punt at his 35, but the kick goes out of bounds at the 35.

Q4 13:23: Hillis gets six on first down and on second down Orton finds Royal, but he is hit hard and can’t hang on. Keith Rivers made the hit and Royal is still down.

Q4 12:37: Third-and-four at the 41-yard line — Royal was able to get up and walk off the field previously — first down to Marshall.

Q4 12:00: Orton avoids the second down sack and hits Graham. But Ben Hamilton is called for holding, pushing the offense back. Second-and-19, Orton hits Graham for 10. Third-and-nine, Bengals look to blitz… they do… Orton rolls and hits a diving Graham. Nice catch, 20-yard gain.

Q4 8:23: Two short runs by LaMont Jordan and it is another third down… Orton with Buckhalter to his right… flags. False start on Hamilton. Third-and-10… Orton to Buckhalter, first down — flag. Wiegmann got nailed for holding. Now third-and-16… timeout Broncos.

Q4 7:03: Third-and-16… Orton solo in the gun, and the pocket collapses. Sacked by Antwan Odom… out of field goal range, and Kern is out. Cosby fair catches it inside the 10.

Q4 6:21: Most of the 62,831 at Paul Brown Stadium are hoping the Bengals can drive down the field, if they do they will have to go 91 yards.

Q4 6:00: On second down, Palmer hits Ochocinco for a 12-yard gain. First-and-10 at the 23.

Q4 5:01: Broncos looked like they may have had too many men on the field, so they call their second timeout of the half. After the timeout, Alphonso Smith blows into the backfield and knocks Benson down for a three-yard loss.

Q4 03:20: Big run by Benson, gain of 20 moves the Bengals near midfield.

Q4 2:00: Just before the two-minute warning the Bengals get 13 yards to the Broncos 32-yard line.

Q4 1:30: The Bengals are moving into range, Leonard catches a Palmer pass and gets it to the 14… now the seven after a reception by Caldwell. Now the one… time out Bengals.

Q4 00:41: The replay booth is going to look if Caldwell snuck in. Looks like he didn’t, so Bengals ball at the one… Bengals have the heavy package on the field, and Benson goes in for the touchdown.

Q4 00:20: Not totally sure what happened with the game clock on that one. The one that is directly across from the press box didn’t move… but apparently it was supposed to or should have. Either way the Broncos have 20 seconds.

Looks like more confusion with the clock. The referee Jerome Boger has gone to the headset and a conference is undergoing near the Bengals sideline.

Q4 00:38: Now this will look weird, but there is now a correction, 38 second remain.

Q4 00:34: Here we go, ball at the 13… Orton looks for Marshall, the ball is caught by the Bengals, but out of bounds – incomplete… ball to Marshall tipped… Stokley grabs it and goes all the way for the touchdown. Oh my!

Q4 00:11: Now that is why you never quit. 87 yards, Brandon Stokley and the Broncos go for two, but the pass is incomplete. 12-7, 11 second left and the Broncos will kickoff. Paul Brown Stadium has gone silent.

Q4 00:05: Caldwell returns the kick to the 33-yard line.

Ball game, Broncos – amazingly – defeat the Bengals 12-7.

Man people love to hate, was on the Fox site and they were still hating. I liked how NOOO analyst picked the Broncos to win and kept on talking about how bad the D was. Glad my boys showed up today on D and yes the touchdown was lucky but they did win and I’ve seen that happen against the Broncos many times. Keep it up boys and win at least 10 more. Peace.

  2. kgallant46 says:

I agree Orton is not the long term solution, but it’s too early to put Brandstater in now. Orton may be just good enough to win some games, and you can’t forget that QB managers HAVE won Super Bowls before. Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson come to mind. Of course those teams had GREAT defenses, but with what I’ve seen today, the Broncs are well on their way.

  3. BroncoHOLIC19 says:

Im so happy Jay Cutler is getting beat around out there. 2 sacks and 3 INTs im loving it.. and the best part is he’s still got some beatin to go! games not over yet. And by the way, what a game today.. what a crazy way to get a W.
    1-0
15 more to go!! (thats wishful thinking)

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  4. baylinorcrush says:

Arizona is nothing like last year anyway, did you see them get beat by the niners today?

  5. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

kgallant46 – I agree except for the fact that the Broncos aren’t there yet this year. Elway, Aikman, Manning…they were all thrown to the wolves as rookies and yes they struggled, ALL of them, but look at them now.

Brandstater has more talent and potential in his left pocket than Orton will ever have. I don’t hate Orton, he can manage and win games there is no doubt. And all the drops were not his fault. But I have very little patience when I see a guy wide open down the middle of the field where he is looking and he doesn’t throw it, and I have little patience when I see him take the sack that almost lost the game. I am probably a little too harsh and impatient but I see a lot of potential in Brandstater and we are in a rebuilding year so let the kid develop.

  6. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

All I have to say is Orton is a winner, every team he has played for he had a winning record, so we need to show him a little more faith than what some of you are showing. He has improved with every game he has played in with us this year, so there is nothing showing me that that won’t continue. I know it gets a little heated in here, but in the end we are all rooting for the same team.
    Goodnight Bronco Fam.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

I believe he is 22-12 now

  8. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

It’s not heated brother, we’re all just sharing our passion for our team. I love reading all the different opinions, it’s great.

You’re right, the guy wins games. I hope he does better. I have little patience for stupidity on the field with veterans, that’s all.

  9. OGBronco4life says:

Flat out, Brandstater will not play as soon as people want him to, which seems like it is today. Orton did enough to win, up until that sack he took! That was very ROOKIE-ISH! He strenght is suppose to be that he is smart, that WASN’T smart.

  10. OGBronco4life says:

    kiss the baby!!!

    goodnight!!!

  11. G funk says:

i just got done watching the game had to record it. We won yes by luck but we still won I read some of the other coments and let me say I’m shocked people blaming Orton for everything. He managed the game pretty well. I look at one stat no INT. I know the offence looked little off but they are going to gt better. No body is saying how good the D played The Bangels diddnt score till the Last minute. So to me that even a win. Im not going to make judgements after one game i’m going to enjoy this win get ready for next week.

  12. Broncofan387 says:

McD is the worst coach in the NFL or College, he gets no respect. He hasn’t proven anything, you guys wordhip him like his name is Belichek.

Yes Jay cutler is pretty horrible tonight but at least u see some flashes of greatness. I didn’t see flashes of anything great from Orton today. Why don’t u guys just get off of Cutler’s nuts? U guys r focusing more on this Bears game than what happened to the Broncos today. Once again I don’t care what any of u guys have to say because I am a realist. U guys come on here and cry all day. I would have to call most of u guys prima-donna fans.

Anyway how does a #2 offense last year come to this? We supposedly got a offensive genius in McD right? We put up lousy 6 freakin points excluding the miracle against the Bungles. All of the sudden they have a top ten defense right?

Why can’t we just say this is the rebuilding year and just enjoy the games?

I know there will be haters to follow. Good Night!

  13. florio's_mom says:

it must be hard for U to type a Y and an O.

  14. dbroncos6 says:

hahahaha cutler must lead the team down the field… hahahaha not ganna happen

  15. maraxus1199 says:

I dunno dbronc. You gotta admit, Cutler always did pretty well in the 2 min. drill.

  16. BroncoWildKansan says:

Broncofan387, we are not the ones complaining. I know we have a lot to work on, but the game has 3 aspects of football not one. Cutler left us, not the other way around. Why support someone who dosn’t want to play for you. It really sounds like you are a cutler fan not a bronco fan. By the way McD won his first game as a Head Coach in the NFL so don’t knock him until he proves you right. Although it is your opinion, but you havn’t supported it.

Again Broncofan387, according to your last post you are a cutler fan, not a Bronco fan. Change your handle.

  17. BroncoWildKansan says:

    4 ints !!!

  18. dbroncos6 says:

i wonder how bad he wants back in denver

  19. Deify_you says:

Oh no Cutler fans, four interceptions for your hero lol. GB wins woooo!!!

  20. broncosfreak30 says:

HAHAHAHA, CUTLER THREW HIS 4TH INTERCEPTION AS HE LOSES THE GAME FOR THE BEARS!!! SORRY CUTLER, ITS TOO LATE TO COME BACK TO DENVER!!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

387, I thought you’d want to know, Cutler just threw his 4th INT, personal record and threw the game for the Bears in the process. Goodnight.

  22. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

4 INT’s, the most in his career in one game, and a loss for Cutler and the Bears, and a miracle win for Orton and the Broncos.

The football gods have spoken! lol

  23. florio's_mom says:

Denver Broncos: 1-0 (Orton, game winning TD in the last minute)

Chicago Bears: 0-1 (Cutler, 4 INTs)

    Enjoy.

  24. broncos20 says:

ahaha, Cutler having receiver troubles?? 4ints..:L:L..a new career-high

  25. florio's_mom says:

I wanna see McD’s face right now. Grin ear to ear.

  26. I wish my name was champ says:

    Haha pick 4.

Nobody’s denying how messy the summer has been. Today’s game was topsy turvy, the D looked very good at an offence dubbed one of the best in the league pre-season. Orton looked cold out there, but until the sack he DID manage the game well.

I know that ‘managing’ a game isn’t the same as being able to pull out a win when you’re on the backfoot, but it isn’t as bad as a lot of guys are making out. Hopefully the offence will improve next week, and if Orton isn’t our guy then we’ll know in a few weeks.

For now lets enjoy the win, and Cutler’s stellar performance.

  27. BroncoWildKansan says:

Ok now that Cutler is not a Bronco I will start rooting for him!!!!

    Go Cutler Go!!!

    Great Job!!!!

    Cutler, Cutler, He’s our MAN!!!
As long as you play for the Bears
    I’ll be your FAN!!!!

    Throw, Throw, Throw an IT
    You can never come back
So open wide, and BITE ME!!!!

  28. florio's_mom says:

Have fun Cutler??? Wait til next week when you meet James Harrison.

  29. BroncoWildKansan says:

    THAT WAS FOR 387!!!

  30. paulbedichek says:

Great to see Chicago lose Cutler looked better throwing 4 picks than Orton did winning. The sack he took was just unforgivable remember when Jake gave the ball away right before halftime? The win was great (I cash a $600 ticket)I have to say I’d like to see Brandstater with a week of practice, that’s not going to happen so I’m cheering for Orton and my team 1-0

  31. jimmy25u says:

All i have to say is our defence is awesome, we would have shut them out if orton would’nt have took the sack and prater would have put us up to 9-0 because we would have put more pressure on palmer. But other then that orton did alright for his first game with Denver and on the road. Now we just need to build off this win and tear cleveland up at home. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  32. broncomvp24 says:

My sister just met Elway in Vegas at the burger bar!!! That was awesome! N e way… However you get it done, just win the game. I’m not the bigest fan of orton but he has experience and if our D keeps playing well and we avoid the prevent then Orton and the WR core will get it together. We saw tonight what cutler can do without recievers… when Orton is 100% he will do fine.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!! 10-6!!!!!!

  33. rkymtnhigh says:

First order of business this week better be red zone offense.

    night y’all

gunna get a good night sleep tonight. We won Cutler sucked.
all is well in broncoville tonight.

    out

  34. hotsizzle says:

Orton played pretty poorly, but at least he didn’t look like he was going to cry like a little bitch, which is what Cutler looked like!

I will not miss that pouting baby face when things go wrong.

  35. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I was pleased to see Orton (and Stokley) make a play to win the game while Cutler choked. For all the crap we’ve heard this offseason, the Broncos have been vindicated marvelously in this instance. Well, I look forward to next week’s pasting of the Brownies. GO BRONCOS!!!

  36. The_Ink says:

It is amazing that Cutler can throw 4 ints and it isn’t his fault…………if orton threw those pics then it would be all his fault…..everyone love cutler way too much

  37. patientbronco says:

Interesting that the D carried us through the majority of this game. I still say that Nolan is the key to a good season for us and our best pickup of the offseason. Our offense will get better as Orton gets healthy and comfortable with this offense and they gel as a unit. Our D will improve as well, but I do think we will be in for some inconsistencies. Still, great to win the season opener. Seems like the beleivers here are about the only ones that thought it possible.

For all the fans stating that Orton is horrible and should not be on the field, remeber that its a team sport. Even Elway could not win a super bowl until a lot of complimentary peices were put in place to make a great team.

  38. broncomvp24 says:

Cutler did not play well, but he did try to make his players better. If the WR’s of Chi were more experienced then the score of the game would have reflected a Bears win… BUT IT DIDN’t and I AM HAPPY!!!!! However this will not last, Cutler is a good QB and Has a rocket arm… more run first and the Bears will do ok…

  39. highkilla707 says:

we need to get hillis involved more in the game

  40. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

They are calling it the “Immaculate Deflection.” We watched history today my fellow Bronco fans.

  41. The_Ink says:

No that is how Cutler plays…..those pics were cutler’s fault not poor receivers….he even threw it where no receiver was….be real……….he has a strong arm but he forces too much and he lacks heart…..and he is a bad team mate

Thats all I am going to say about Cutty!

  42. whitebronco#1 says:

I’m going to repeat what I said back in half 08 season (and a lot of fans wanted to crucify me), because it makes all the sense today:

Cutler was a probowler just because the voting for Probowl is at mid season, not at the last part of the season (when the real stuff is shown). If the voting would have been at the end of 08 season, Cutler would have never been a probowler. Period.

Cutler would have never been what he think he is without the Broncos OL and receivers.

Today we saw a bad day of Cutler, sure, but not a day too far of what he is for real. This is what a good QB (Cutler) can do with no OL and no WRs… then, how Orton could do it when he was with the Bears? Or this means that then Orton is a better QB than Cutler? What’s the use of a rocket arm when you don’t have time and brains to use it?

Again, today CUTLER had a bad day. Get used to this, because his WRs and his OL won’t be different this season. And Orton too had a bad day, because his receivers dropped a lot of passes… but no picks, anyway. Which one have a better room for improvement?

So, at the end we traded this “half 08 season probowler” (the other half was a looser) for Ayers, Orton, and what seems to be a very promising first round pick next year. At least today it seems it was the best deal for us, don’t you think?

    Go Broncooos!

  43. AussieBronco1 says:

Cutler and Shanny are GONE. They are no longer part of this team. Forget them! Orton has the team, the owner, his coach, his teammates, and his FANS in the forefront of his mind. He is a great TEAM player. The offense will gel. Support our QB and our new-look Broncos. They are a team to be very proud of.

  44. TheRoyalBeast says:

Yall stop fronting on Cutler. Kid was pretty good here and improving….even without a run game. We didnt lose in the trade but we aint exactly win either. He stinks there and he was growing here. Its all about the people that mentor you, the system and the guys around you.

How about Mark Sanchez yall…I doubted him a bit when I heard talk about him but he is transitioning well…who woulda thunk it? a USC QB lol. Kid is doing well, kinda wish we had a chance to get him now lol…and his WR talent aint all that either.

Orton is here to stay for better or worse…I personally would prefer Brandstater in there but I know it wont happen. And Orton Looked below average….I will blame it on the glove. when he is 100percent he is usually average at best lol. Even that Miraculous play, he threw dangerously….when we were trying to come back. Only God saved us. We keep making excuses for him and giving him chances but we cant all season…..his gonna have to improve….drastically…IMO

  45. dnvabroncomaniac says:

WoW what an exciting way to start the season with a miracle play that gave us the win!
    Go BRONCOS!!!

  46. DrResinFingers says:

WOW, that one guy up there really loves Cutler…Does he know that Cutler requested a trade because he thought the manager wanted to trade him, and didn’t promise him he wouldn’t. He was a sissy, and deserved to be traded to a team with no talent on the WR core. He thought he was the broncos…well they proved him wrong today. They didn’t get lucky, they played DEFENSE! That is what wins ANY game. And Brandon just looked up and knew what he had to do…the only luck was that the ball was tipped just right….

We’ll see if this keeps up…don’t go hating Orton just yet…NO INTS!!!!!

  47. Caribbean Boi says:

Wait…what? Cutler isn’t the “PERFECT” football player? LOL.
I like the comparisons made between Cutler and Orton.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/columns/story?columnist=greenberg_jon&id=4471688

  48. bkl274957 says:

Great WIN! This is the kind of win that propels a team. How often in the last few years can the Broncos say their defense dominated the game? The defense’s performance today was AWESOME! I think a couple of stand-outs were A. Davis and A. Smith, gives us a glance of what the new guys are going to bring to the mix. I know the offense was a little out of sinc but that could be excepted. Orton, Marshall, and Moreno did not get much game time together in the preseason and you could see coach Mcdaniels was trying to get both Marshall and Moreno into the scheme of things and the more they work together the better they will be. And also don’t forget Cinci is not to bad on D, I think they were ranked 12th last year and they made some bigs moves in the off-season; Roy Williams, Tank Johnson, and rookie LB Rey Maualuga. The Brandon Stokely TD catch that won the game, I see alot of people saying it was lucky, maybe, but it does show the spirit and attitude of this team. A play is not over until it’s over, you fight for 60 minutes, never give up on a play or a game. And who was I first player in the end zone to congradulate Stokely?- Brandon Marshall, that should end the questions about where his head and heart are! So it was a great win, the defense was great all day and in the end the offense that had struggled all day pulled it out. It was a win and a win on the road, now the Broncos return to Denver to play the brownies. The last thing I would have to add is you have to give it up to the new coaching staff, they had the team ready to play today in all 3 phases of the game. I’ve been one who as been critical of Mcdaniels this off-season but I have to say he has put it all together and it showed this first game of his head coaching career.
DENVER BRONCOS & the ORANGE CRUSH- GO All the Way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. mrbroncofan says:

    we got a great defense

we got a qb with zero ints

we got a team that plays a full 60 minutes

we got an miracle play by Stockley

    we got a WIN

CUTLER GOT 4 INTS AND A LOSS

The difference between a average team and a great team is that the great teams can win the close games like this. Ya it was only one game but I sure am happy. Hey and Shannon Sharpe goes into the Ring of Fame soon.
