Q3 15:00: Bengals will receive the second half kickoff. Andre Caldwell is back deep, but Prater sends him five-deep for the touchback.
Q3 14:57: Two short completions and the Bengals have a first down at the 34-yard line. Palmer is being victimized by his receivers dropping the ball, this time Jeremi Johnson drops the first down pass.
Q3 13:00: Third-and-seven, Palmer with running backs on each side, finds Coles… but he drops another one. Fourth down, and Eddie Royal is back for Huber’s kick. Royal looks for space, but doesn’t find much and there is a flag. But the refs pick up the flag, first down Broncos at the 14.
Q3 12:33: Knowshon Moreno gets the first carry of the half, but he slips and loses four yards. And the Broncos are going the wrong direction as Daniel Graham is whistled for a false start. A short run by Moreno and it is third-and-13… Orton hits Marshall, but he is short of the first down. Kern is back out, and it goes off the side of his foot, good field position for the Bengals.
Q3 10:07: Bengals start their drive at the Broncos 45-yard line. On second down Mario Haggan comes blazing in for the sack and loss of 10 yards. Third-and-14, sacked again, this time by Darrell Reid.
Q3 8:23: The Broncos will start pushed back again, as Jack Williams is flagged for an illegal block on the punt. First down at the five… The Bengals are pumping up the crowd as the Broncos have it deep.
Q3 8:00: First down Broncos, Orton hits Graham for a 10-yard gain, ball at the 17-yard line.
Q3 6:33: Eight-yard gain on first down for Moreno who looks shaken up following the run… as does Peyton Hillis. Buckhalter steps in on the next play and gets 11 for another first down.
Q3 5:00: Orton hits Marshall across the middle, who is hit hard by the rookie Rey Maualuga but hangs on to the ball for a decent gain. After an offsides penalty on the Bengals, Buckhalter is tripped up for yard loss. Third-and-two… Orton looks for Hillis, but he can’t hang on. Fourth down and out comes the punting unit. Kern gets a punt off, but the Broncos are flagged for a false start. On his second attempt, his punt is fielded by Crosby who is brought down by Haggan.
Q3 4:13: Bengals start the drive at 17, abut are tackled for a five yard loss on first down.
**INJURY UPDATE** Moreno took a blow to the head and his return is probable.
Q3 3:20: D.J. Williams almost picked one on second down, but the ball fell incomplete… A third down reception has the Bengals close to a first down, but they are going to punt to Royal instead. Royal returns the ball to the 34-yard line.
Q3 2:29: First down, Orton has all day and finds Scheffler streaking open. First down, gain of 29 yards. Ball at the Bengals 37-yard line.
Q3 1:16: Two short runs, one by Orton, and the Broncos have a third-and-five… Orton solo in the gun, finds Stokley but he drops it. Fourth down, and out come Matt Prater. This one will be from 50, snap, set, kick… good. Broncos 6 – Bengals 0; 00:14 left in the third quarter.
Q3 00:14: Caldwell can only get the ball to the 15-yard line, where the Bengals will have it with time running out in the third quarter. Palmer hits Ochocinco, but flags on the play. Sure looked like Ochocinco pushed off, he did and there was an illegal man downfield as well. Bengals pushed back and with that the third quarter comes to an end.
Q4 15:00: Bengals first-and-17 from their eight-yard line gain nine on first down, six on second down and face third-and-two… Palmer looks for Caldwell but the rookie Alphonso Smith breaks it up. Big play by Smith and it is fourth down. Royal waits for the punt at his 35, but the kick goes out of bounds at the 35.
Q4 13:23: Hillis gets six on first down and on second down Orton finds Royal, but he is hit hard and can’t hang on. Keith Rivers made the hit and Royal is still down.
Q4 12:37: Third-and-four at the 41-yard line — Royal was able to get up and walk off the field previously — first down to Marshall.
Q4 12:00: Orton avoids the second down sack and hits Graham. But Ben Hamilton is called for holding, pushing the offense back. Second-and-19, Orton hits Graham for 10. Third-and-nine, Bengals look to blitz… they do… Orton rolls and hits a diving Graham. Nice catch, 20-yard gain.
Q4 8:23: Two short runs by LaMont Jordan and it is another third down… Orton with Buckhalter to his right… flags. False start on Hamilton. Third-and-10… Orton to Buckhalter, first down — flag. Wiegmann got nailed for holding. Now third-and-16… timeout Broncos.
Q4 7:03: Third-and-16… Orton solo in the gun, and the pocket collapses. Sacked by Antwan Odom… out of field goal range, and Kern is out. Cosby fair catches it inside the 10.
Q4 6:21: Most of the 62,831 at Paul Brown Stadium are hoping the Bengals can drive down the field, if they do they will have to go 91 yards.
Q4 6:00: On second down, Palmer hits Ochocinco for a 12-yard gain. First-and-10 at the 23.
Q4 5:01: Broncos looked like they may have had too many men on the field, so they call their second timeout of the half. After the timeout, Alphonso Smith blows into the backfield and knocks Benson down for a three-yard loss.
Q4 03:20: Big run by Benson, gain of 20 moves the Bengals near midfield.
Q4 2:00: Just before the two-minute warning the Bengals get 13 yards to the Broncos 32-yard line.
Q4 1:30: The Bengals are moving into range, Leonard catches a Palmer pass and gets it to the 14… now the seven after a reception by Caldwell. Now the one… time out Bengals.
Q4 00:41: The replay booth is going to look if Caldwell snuck in. Looks like he didn’t, so Bengals ball at the one… Bengals have the heavy package on the field, and Benson goes in for the touchdown.
Q4 00:20: Not totally sure what happened with the game clock on that one. The one that is directly across from the press box didn’t move… but apparently it was supposed to or should have. Either way the Broncos have 20 seconds.
Looks like more confusion with the clock. The referee Jerome Boger has gone to the headset and a conference is undergoing near the Bengals sideline.
Q4 00:38: Now this will look weird, but there is now a correction, 38 second remain.
Q4 00:34: Here we go, ball at the 13… Orton looks for Marshall, the ball is caught by the Bengals, but out of bounds – incomplete… ball to Marshall tipped… Stokley grabs it and goes all the way for the touchdown. Oh my!
Q4 00:11: Now that is why you never quit. 87 yards, Brandon Stokley and the Broncos go for two, but the pass is incomplete. 12-7, 11 second left and the Broncos will kickoff. Paul Brown Stadium has gone silent.
Q4 00:05: Caldwell returns the kick to the 33-yard line.
Ball game, Broncos – amazingly – defeat the Bengals 12-7.

Please tell me that this is not the Bronco team we are going to have to watch all year. All victories are better than losses. But is McDaniels really going to keep this prideful wasting of a season. Can’t he just admit that Orton is not the guy. You are telling me that a QB with an injured throwing hand is a better option than a healthy Simms. Rather than to allow Simms to get in and shine and create a “QB controversy” I was not pleased with the 12 point effort. Nowhere near happy with the 150 yards Orton threw for. Not at all pleased with the fact that Buckhalter ran well so he only got 8 carries. Not at all pleased withthe fact that we are still the same team that I talked about in preseason. Game on the line our defense allowed a long touchdown drive. (though in fairness they played well most of the game.) Brandon Marshall dropped some passes, as did a few other players, But on the one deep ball Orton couldn’t get it to him. Cutler is gone. And I know rebuttal is going to be Cutler threw 4ints and they lost, but did you see that on three of those he threw where the receiver was running and the receiver either quit or changed routes. (the screen was ridiculous) I am not crying for Cutler, but at least put the team in a position to win games. Sometimes you shouldn’t have to rebuild you should just RELOAD
This game was won with pure Luck. I am happy they won because the defense deserved to not have all their hard work go down the toilet. I noticed something about Kyle Orton yesterday, he does not have the arm strength to complete the long ball. Finger? Orton has no feet and stiffens up when he feels pressure. On Ortons 1st sack of the game he simply fell over because he was so stiff. 1-0 is better than 0-1, but I would like to see a better TEAM performance, offense clicking on all cylinders and defense clicking on all cylinders. Defense did well, considering they were on the field the whole game.
There are too many offensive weapons on this team to struggle the way they did. I’m sure McDaniels will stick with Orton, however if there is another performance like this one next week, I say utilize your other option in Simms or Brandstater. I cannot remember a game where I saw the Broncos Offense go 3 & out so many times. This win was bitter sweet, cannot depend on these types of wins every week. I expected more from this offense and Orton, because I saw good things in the pre-season. Is it that the Bengals D is that good or the Broncos offense is that bad? Learn from this and See you in Denver Next week. Go Broncos!!!!
Broncomania56, the Broncos offense was that bad and the Bengals defense was that good, a combination of both.
while cutler may win some games for the bears, his performance today lost it for them. When they needed him, he threw another interception. While you complain about orton, today’s 0 interceptions helped us win the games. No way we win today if he turned the ball over. How many times when we needed a drive did cutler throw a crucial pick?? While no long term comparisons can be made by week 1, this week we got the better deal.
1-0, go broncos
Our defense played awesome. The only problems is that when we needed to stop them we couldn’t. On third downs and the last drive, we played on our heals trying to keep them from moving, kind of a prevent defense. When we went after them with the blitz, they stood no chance and that was an awsome performance.
I really thought after the first two plays, we were looking great. Buckhalter ran great. I don’t know what the heck happened after that. I started wondering if McD was in over his head. Orton is having trouble hitting those crossing routes. Even the passes that were caught were really thrown poor. If he keeps throwing to guys that are covered over the middle, our receivers are going to get hurt very badly and if not hurt, they will be to timid to concentrate on catching the ball. He still seems out of sink with this offense still. Not to mention the sack that put us out of field goal range.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not giving up on Orton. Just saying WTF.
Hopefully our Defense can keep up the steller effort, if we can get some dang first downs and keep them off the field for little while.
All in all, just glad that we got a win we shouldn’t have, hope we don’t waste them like we did last year.
GO BRONCOS!!
People forget that Orton basically had two weeks off so he was little rusty he has a dislocated nuckel, i’m not making excuses but come on. We won the game. i think alot of us are complaining because we are used to the team throwing up lots of points. this clearly was the D day which to me is great. All the talk was we don’t have a D well look at us now. now to move on to next week cant wait to see what will happen next
It sure looked like the problems with the D had been corrected, but we seem to have swapped offense for defense, Orton was just plain unremarkable, seems like we need some improvement in QB if we want to do more than win by a lucky tip of the ball (which was great, and showed us how good Stokley is) but without a strong offensive captain it is going to be a struggle to win games. Yes this was Ortons’ first game, but this was how he played for chicago. On the other hand the plays were called by our rookie coach, so maybe McD needs to step it up a notch, anyway glad we won, next game at home with a spotlight on Shannon Sharpe so lets hope for the best.
GO BRONCOS
Congratulations to McD for his 1st win as a head coach, on the first try, no less!
As far as positives, this is what I saw:
On the Defense, they were overall very agressive, exactly the style I was hoping to see, except for the late scoring drive by the Bengals when we seemed to go into a prevent. Come on Nolan, you oughta know prevent doesn’t prevent anything!
Andra Davis, basically non existent in pre-season, was absolutely awesome today. Big off season pick up.
Goodman was great when thrown his way which wasn’t often.
Bailey got more work and other than been beaten badly on a long pass to Chad on the sideline, played well.
Haggan and Woodyard showed why they were captain picks.
Alphonso Smith was all over the place (again, worthy of a #1 pick).
Dawkins, what a presence! Sees the field better than most, seems to always find his way to the action.
On Offense, Graham was by far the best O player out there, and no one is saying anything about it (I guess they rather complain about Orton). Played like a beast, great key catches.
Buckhalter did well when out there, deserves more plays.
On ST, Prater was fantastic once again, long field goals and consistently kicking them deep on KO (where are the guys who said we needed a new kicker all off season?).
For negatives:
On D, Not much to add here other than Ayers was basically non existent, other than seeing him in the corner of the screen a couple of times. Slow to adjust to this team.
On O, Hillis is way under utilized, hopefully he doesn’t start taking a bigger role on ST and smaller one on O.
Very little from Royal, Gaffney (other than the great catch on the sideline) and Stockley (other than the miracle deflection TD).
Marshall 3 dropped balls, but did hold onto a key one after a hard lick.
Hamilton’s super costly penalties, not Clady anymore.
Orton not throwing it away for what would of been a sure field goal, the way Prater was kicking.
Nothing really negative to say about ST other than Kern shanked one badly and was short on another, but he punted many.
Coaching, bad play calling by McD on 3rd and 13 at around the 35/40 yrd line when a 5 yard gain would of put us comfortably in field goal range to go up 9-0 with a couple minutes left, and he calls a passing play and we got sacked. We did not need a 1st down there, a field goal would of put the game away, that in my eye was definitely calling for a much safer running play. Everybody keeps blaming Orton on that one, McD has to share some of the blame there to put Orton in that position in the 1st place.
In retrospect, we were lucky Cinci dropped so many balls, otherwise the game wouldn’t of been close.
I picked us to go 8-8, but for that scenario we need to go 3-0 to start. 1st mission accomplished, sort of…
Let’s go back to work, specially the O and take care of the 2nd mission. With Orton at the helm of course, I think he did fine, and I wish Bronco fans stopped this enamored thing with QB’s, of course Elway started all that, but that is living in the past and we will likely never live that again. What we can do is build a top defense, have a strong running game and good ST and win with a managing QB. Now that’s more realistic.
WOW baylinorcrush, You took the word right out of my head. Great evaluation and post, every statement you’ve made is valid and I could’nt agree with you more on Graham and Hillis. Keepin it realistic.
I’m glad The Broncos ground one out and Cinci got unlucky.
It feels like dishing out a bad beat on the river card at the poker table, you accept it but know they got unlucky. You don’t talk trash and you don’t jump up and down all happy. You just accept it, move on to the next hand, and try not to put yourself into those situations anymore…
TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !
GO BRONCOS ! ! !
baylinorcrush, I do agree, too.
Both defenses (Cincy’s and ours) played very well. Their O showed a bit more when our D become preventive than our O, but anyway we got the turnover difference (the 1st, because the last one was kind of obvious), so kind of even.
There’s a big big room for improvement in all the 3 parts. I’m sure there’s been a lot of learning also for the coaches. The system is not where I guess it should be, but it seems it’s moving towards somewhere (unlike last year). I also agree that one game isn’t enough to determine if the D, or the O, or ST are what we all expect, but a W is a W, and now it counts.
Go Broncooos!
There is always room for improvement, I thought for sure we were gonners after the Kyle Orton sack that put us out of field goal range to go up 9 to 0. D still needed to make that one big play to seal the deal but the folded and made Palmer look like a stud the final drive. I believe in Miracles but i wasnt expecting anything like what happened when Stokley caught that tipped ball. Great heads up play to run time off, thats what Vets do, he could have danced or been celebrating halfway to the endzone but his choice to run just a few seconds off really helped. Congrats on history Stoks.
baylinorcrush: What did you think about Knowshons Morenos preformance. Looks like he is one player away from breaking a big play. I just hope McD gives him the ball more. Hes a playmaker that needs the ball. . . Go Broncs
broncomike, I think Moreno eventually will be fine but, problem is he is behind the 8 ball now. He held out for 8 days of training camp, then got hurt and is basically a month behind everyone else. Barring further injuries, I would say he’ll start producing on a consistent basis maybe by the New-England game, but more likely after the bye week. Rookie RB’S usually take awhile getting used to the speed of the game in the pros, everything seems to be going 100mph now, with time everything will start slowing down. When it does, it looks that this young man could turn into the best back we’ve had since Portis.
Anyway, I think Buckhalter has a lot left in the tank regardless of his age because he has mainly always been a back up RB in his career. If we play him more and back him up with Hillis, I believe our running game will be more than adequate before Moreno is fully NFL ready. Please, Jordan on short yardage and passing downs only.
I think Moreno will find his way, gotta jam it up in there sometimes son and not look for the outside homer all the time. Those things come with time. The OLB’s have GOT to start shutting down the running lanes, the inside guys were forcing the plays to the outside only to see BENSON zip on by. I was high on Alphonso Smith before he was drafted, but WOW, I was impressed with the kid! Stop rushing Elvis inside Josh, he’s an edge rusher and that’s where he’s an elite threat, not on guards. Kuper can’t get healthy fast enough, good grief the rookie got handled all day. This meant that Casey had to help him out for most of the day instead of sliding proctection over to Hamilton when he was getting bull rushed. I hope that was the worst game Casey plays all year because that was a bad one. We got lucky, and we all deserved to have some good luck finally, now we need to prove the deep ball is still in the playbook.
Kyle were ya at? Can we have a new post please? How about something on The TEAM of the Ages.
——————–
Mono good analogy.I’m down at the Wynn most days playing 2-5(nl)
I live in hamilton oh. I was at the game sunday sourrounded by bengal fans. when stokely caught that tip ball i was going off in the stands, I was telling them to shut the **** up I mean i was yelling it to the point I lost my voice. Some punk as cincy fan threw a bottle at me behind me, I turned and tried to climb the seats to whoop’em but security was there telling me 2 calm down. But other than that I think our o gotta be more productive hillis and buck should’ve had mre carries and orton is a bum or at least played like 1. Our d gotta work on pass defense and boost our pass rush. Orton is a bum wer simms and the rookie at?
So paulbedichek, you know that you accept it quietly and move on. I hope The Broncos don’t put themselves in that situation anymore. Cinci got unlucky and thats the way it goes some times, thats why you never rub it in, (Unless you suck out on the jerk of the table).
