Broncos at 49ers: Second Half Blog

October 31st, 2010 - 12:34pm by Kyle Sonneman

Q3 15:00: Matt Prater opens the third quarter with a kickoff fielded by Ted Ginn at the goalline. Ginn is tackled by Kyle McCarthy at the 22-yard line.

Q3 14:00: Two carries by Frank Gore and the 49ers face a third-and-1 at the 32-yard line. Gore picks it up with a gain of two. First-and-ten at the 34-yard line and the 49ers call a timeout.

Q3 12:50: Quick first down by the 49ers and they have the ball at their 46-yard line. On first down, Gore takes it outside and cuts it back inside for a 5-yard gain. Second-and-five, D.J. Williams blows up the block attempt by Moran Norris and stops Gore for a two-yard loss. Third-and-seven and San Francisco calls another timeout. Their second on this drive.

Q3 11:01: Third-and-seven at the 49ers 49-yard line, Smith in the gun and Gore to his right, gives it to Gore but he is stopped by D.J. Williams and Jason Hunter for a 2-yard gain. 49ers to punt. Eddie Royal calls for a fair catch and the Broncos will start their first possession of the second half at their 11-yard line.

Q3 10:24: A short gain by Knowshon Moreno and a quick pass from Kyle Orton to Jabar Gaffney and the Broncos have a third-and-six. Orton sets the protection, alludes the rush and picks up the first down on his feet. Flag on the play, illegal contact on the defense. The penalty is added to the end of the run, first-and-ten at the 28-yard line.

Q3 8:45: On first down, Orton fakes the pitch and looks deep. He has Brandon Lloyd who is brought down at the 49ers 1-yard line. Tim Tebow in, takes the ball in the gun and scores a one-yard touchdown. Matt Prater is on for the extra point and it is good. Broncos take the lead.

BRONCOS 7, 49ERS 3; 8:08 Q3

Q3 8:08: Tonight’s attendance is announced as 83,941 and I think all of them were doing the wave just before the Broncos touchdown. Prater kicks off to Ginn who fields the ball at the 3-yard line, brings it to the 22-yard line where he is met by Joe Mays.

First down 49ers at their 22-yard line. Troy Smith drops to pass, is pressured and dumps the ball to Gore who picks up seven. Brian Westbrook spells Gore on second down and he picks up two. Third-and-1, Smith rolls and hits Josh Morgan for a first down and big gain. 30 yards on the pass and catch and the 49ers are on the Broncos side of the field.

Q3 4:23: After a short run by Gore and a three-yard scramble by Smith and it is third-and-6. Brian Dawkins puts the heat on Smith and the pass falls incomplete. Joe Nedney will come out to attempt a 52-yard field goal. No good. Broncos ball at their 42-yard line.

Q3 4:20: First down, pitch to Moreno who collides with Patrick Willis for a 2-yard gain. Play action on second down, but Lloyd can’t hang on to the short pass bringing up third-and-8. 49ers pressure Orton and he is hit hard but is able to get the pass off. Manny Lawson put his helmet right into Orton’s chest. Orton is slow to get up, but makes his way off the field. Colquitt is on to punt. He kicks it high and Ginn calls for the fair catch. Flag on the field, holding on the 49ers and that will push them back to the 6-yard line.

Q3 3:00: On first down, Gore pushes the pile for a short gain of two and then gets the ball to the 15 for third-and-one. Gore is stuffed on third down for no gain or maybe even a loss and out comes the 49ers punt unit. Royal weaves the way outside the 40-yard line.

First down at the Broncos 42-yard line with Orton in the game despite the big hit on the last series. Before the ball is snapped, Daniel Graham is flagged for a false start. First-and-15, play action and Orton hits Lloyd across mid-field. Gain of 25 on the reception. First-and-ten at the 49ers 35. Flea-flicker, Orton has Gaffney for the touchdown. But hold everything, Moreno is flagged for a chop block nullifying the TD. First-and-25 now, and Buckhalter takes the screen for an 8-yard gain. That will be the end of the third quarter. Broncos with the ball at the 49ers 45-yard line second-and-17.

Q4 15:00: Starting the final quarter of action in London. To say the Broncos bench was unhappy about the chop block call would be an understatement. Anyway, second down Orton hits Demaryius Thomas on the bubble screen and the rookie gets a 31-yard gain. First-and-10 at the 49ers 14.

Q4 14:22: Two incompletions and the Broncos are facing a third-and-10. Orton looks for Lloyd but it was over his head. Looks like Orton thought Lloyd was interfered with. Prater on for the field goal. The 33-yard attempt is good.

BRONCOS 10, 49ERS 3; 14:13 Q4

During the TV timeouts, the video boards are showing highlights of games around the NFL. Without question, the loudest applause comes when the Jaguars-Cowboys highlights are being played. Well based on the score, looks like the highlights are only coming from the Jags. But anyway, looks like the English crowd enjoys seeing the Cowboys getting beat.

Q4 14:00: Nice return by Ginn has the 49ers at the 44-yard line. Holding will push them back 10-yards. First-and-20, Smith looks but can’t connect with his tight end Walker bringing up second-and-20. Smith in the gun, rifles one to the tight end for a first down but there is a flag. Broncos had too many men on the field and the 27-yard completion stands.

First-and-10 at the Broncos 39. Smith is pressured and throws a jump ball that Walker comes down with at the 1-yard line. Brian Dawkins was on Walker and said he was pushed. First-and-goal, the give is to Gore who gets back to the line of scrimmage. Second-and-goal, Smith will keep it and score. Nedney’s extra point is good, and we have a tie game.

BRONCOS 10, 49ERS 10; 11:51 Q4

Q4 11:51: Thomas is back deep for the Broncos and takes the ball at the goal line, he manages to maneuver his way to the 20-yard line where the Broncos will take over.

First-and-10, and a false start on Chris Kuper pushes the offense back 5-yards. Orton hits Royal on the bubble screen and Royal picks up 10. Second-and-5, and Tebow is in. The rookie ducks his head but can only get back to the line of scrimmage. Third-and-5, Orton under center hits Moreno for no gain and the Broncos will be forced to punt.

Q4 9:45: Moreno was able to pick up 2-yard on the reception, but still not enough for the first down. Colquitt out to punt and he didn’t catch that cleanly and the ball takes an awful bounce for the Broncos. Finally the ball is downed at the Broncos’ 48. Only a 21-yard punt.

Q4 9:34: Not much room for Gore on first down as he picks up two yards. But on second down, Smith hits Michael Crabtree for 15 yards and a first down.

Smith drops back on first down and hits Crabtree, he avoids Goodman and walks in for the 28-yard touchdown. 49ers take the lead.

49ERS 17, BRONCOS 10; 7:23 Q4.

Q4 7:18: Short return by Thomas and the Broncos take over at the 18-yard line. Orton scrambles to avoid the rush and is stripped of the ball. 49ers recover the ball, and have it deep in Broncos territory. Manny Lawson forced the fumble and Takeo Spikes recovers.

Q4 6:32: Two plays and the 49ers have the ball at the Broncos 8-yard line, third-and-1. Gore picks up the first down and it is first-and-goal at the five. 3-yard gain by Gore and the 49ers bring in their heavy package for second-and-goal. They hand the ball to Norris, but he is stuffed by Joe Mays for a loss of one. Timeout Broncos.

Q4 3:53: Third-and-goal, and Gore fights and sneaks his way in the endzone. 49ers take a two score lead.

49ERS 24, BRONCOS 10; 3:47 Q4

Q4 3:53: First-and-10 and Orton hits Royal who looks like he has the first down. Broncos are in the hurry-up. Orton hits Gronkowski for another first down. Broncos have the ball at the 45, Orton hits Royal who gets the first down and gets out of bounds.

Q4 2:55: First down, Orton finds Lloyd down the sideline for a big gain. 49ers throw out the red flag saying Lloyd wasn’t inbounds when he made the catch. Referee Scott Green confirms the ruling on the field of a catch good for 29 yards.

Broncos at the 49ers 15-yard line, are called for a false start by Gronkowski pushing them back to the 20. Orton finds Gaffney, who reaches for the goal line but is just short. The Broncos hurry to the line, but there is an injured 49er.

Q4 2:29: Orton on first-and-goal hits Brandon Lloyd for the touchdown. Extra point is blocked and no good. Broncos down by eight.

49ERS 24 – BRONCOS 16; 2:19 Q4

Q4 2:14: Broncos choose to kickoff rather than on onside kick with the two-minute warning and two timeouts left. 49ers start at their 13-yard line. Four yards on first down and maybe two on second down and the 49ers have third-and-4 after the two-minute warning.

Q4 2:00: Third-and-4, the Broncos stop Dixon short of the first down and call their final timeout. Eddie Royal is deep for the punt of Andy Lee.

Q4 1:54: Eddie Royal takes the punt for a touchdown but it will be coming back as Jarvis Moss will be flagged for an illegal block in the back. Broncos ball at the 19-yard line. Almost 20 seconds elapsed with the penalty.

Orton hits Gronkowski on first down and then is sacked on second down, but looks like he was taken down by the helmet again. Indeed, 15-yard penalty and a first down.

Q4 1:09: Ball at the 36-yard line, Orton looks for Lloyd down the field and a nice play by Lloyd to knock the ball away from the defender. Second-and-10, Orton hits Lloyd across midfield.

First-and-10 at the 49ers 45-yard line and Orton spikes the ball to stop the clock with 0:45 left in the game. Second down, Orton in the gun with Gronkowski and Buckhalter in the backfield. Orton looks for Gaffney but Gaffney keeps running and the ball is picked. 49ers take over and will run out the clock for the victory.

Broncos fall to 2-6 and will travel back to Colorado tomorrow morning and will have a bye next week.

Tim Tebow starts after the bye, he has too, this season is over (playoff hopes anyway). Just admit it Coach Josh McDaniels and let him get some experience for next year. Your job is already questionable at the end of the year, and whether Pat wants to fire you or not is probably already decided in his mind, you might as well play Tebow cause at this rate we’ll finish 2-14, it’s best to just swallow your pride and start the young guys Tebow Thomas and Decker, so the fans will have something to look forward to watching on Sundays. Heck I think the NFL and all the analysts want the same thing. Nobody likes you, get over it and let the “future” you’re trying to build show something. I hope Tebow does well personally, I like the guy and would like him to succeed, but your coaching leaves way too much to be desired!

It really is a sad day when the Broncos are bottom feeders. I really thought this day would never come. I’m crying on the inside..

Once again, no heart in me to do the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, what would be the sense?

Yet another loss, third in a row, last week a spanking of 59-14 by the Raiders of all teams, this week a loss to a 1-6 team!!! making us now 2-6 for the year, 4-14 for the last 18 games and 10-14 under McD for the ones who still are trying to hold hope, just simply PATHETIC.

  5. BlazinAsian52 says:

Well the good news is there isn’t football next season we don’t have to worry about failing

  6. BlazinAsian52 says:

I saw a lot of fundemental misakes from the players and that’s never good. McD was losing the team…and I do believe now he’s lost the team and he’s lost the fans. Bowlen if you know what’s good for you, the team and the fans, you’ll sack McD. He’s done more harm that good, more losses than wins, and he’s on a one way ship to disaster and he’s pulling us all along with him yourself included. Bowlen….please, I’m beggin you either take away some of his job duties, or something. No..No..you just keep looking the other way and we’ll take our rightful place at the bottom of the division…we’ve earned it.

Not sure this team can win another game this season. I predicted a 10-6 record this season. So far got the 6 losses right, however I do not see this team winning 8 in a row. Most likely will finish under .500 this season.

I am deeply saddened by this Broncos team performance week in week out. I look forward to Sunday’s so much for the one team I love with all my heart. 2 TD’s yesterday were nullified by penalties, just the way the Broncos season has gone, cannot get a break.

It’s time for the Offense to make a change. I have backed Kyle Orton to this point. I no longer believe he has what it takes to lead this team, when the going gets tough, Orton cannot be depended on. I am ready to see what Tebow can do. Orton simply is not a clutch QB.

Maybe if Tebow could inspire the offense and actually score the defense would improve because they would have something to protect. Our defense spends to much time on field thanks to our offense. At this point what is there to loose. A mobile QB may help as well, case in point would be Troy Smith vs. Alex Smith.

Josh McDaniels is over his head and does not get it. Every week at the podeum he is praising and giving credit to the opposing team. He then proceeds to talk about what they need to correct and how they need to get better. Time for talking about is done, time to put up or shut up. An inspired change for the Team may be what this team needs to wake up.

McDaniels has ruined Denver Broncos football. Pat Bowlen must take some responsibility for this as well. Bowlen started the dismantling by getting rid of Mike Shannahan. Then Bowlen as the owner allowed McDaniels to empose his will and dispose of some great talent. Talent that is producing elsewhere, with the exception of Culter and thats because his offensive line and receivers are worse than he had in Denver.

In my 31 years as a fan, I have never, ever seen a more pathetic display of Broncos football as I have in the last two seasons. There have been loosing seasons, but at least the team was competitive and respectable. Those former teams lost to superior opponents but stayed competitive. This new era finds ways to loose and shoot themselves in the foot at every turn.

There is talent on this team, plenty of it!!! I think the problem is with the head coach who does not know how to recognize this talent and how to properly utilize it. He must find a way to put together a game plan to compliment the talent he has. Enough said, sorry for the long rant, just very frustrated.

So to change it up a bit, at this mid-way point of the season I’m going to talk about nothing but jokes nowdays in the NFL and with our team:

    In the NFL:

    - Playing a game at Wembley each year is a joke.
    - Goodell wanting to play more games in England in the future is a joke.
    - Goodell wanting to put up a team in England is a joke.
    - Team owners wanting more revenue and turning our stadiums into luxury boxes for the corporate world at the expense of the blue collar workers is a joke.
    - Using that attorney guy who succesfully halted play for a season in the NHL for the current negociations with the players is a joke.
    - Using as an excuse the added expenses of the newly built luxury boxes stadiums the owners chose to build as the reason they cannot pay the players their fair share is a joke.
    - Fining players $50,000 for legal hits just because they hurt someone is a joke.

    With the Broncos:

    - McD’s hiring was a joke.
    - Xanders hiring was a joke.
    - McD’s inability to lead his team is a joke.
    - Xanders inability to find us talent is a joke.
    - McD and Xanders inability to hold on to talent is a joke.
    - Orton putting up all world stats and only 2 wins is a joke.
    - Shuffling the O line is a joke.
    - Our inability to run the ball ever since McD took over is a joke.
    - Going back and forth from 43 to 34 with our D is a joke.
    - Being unable to stop the run ever since McD took over is a joke.
    - Our LB’s play is a joke.
    - Our undiscipline is a joke.
    - Our record is a joke.
    - Our team since McD and Xanders took over the reign is a joke.

See, there are a lot of jokes to be had, and I know I missed plenty, but seriously folks, what on earth is going on this year for both the NFL and our Broncos? Regardless that it is the most popular game around, it seems as if so many mistakes are being made at the top now it seems that both the NFL and the Broncos are on a type of suicide mission, and I must say it’s working pretty darn well for me, my beliefs in the league and my team have erroded at lightning speed this year. I don’t like the direction this is headed and I don’t mind voicing it one bit.

Signed: A very, very sorry NFL and Bronco fan.

P.S. The only good thing about this mess is it’s the bye week this week. I can honestly say that for the first time ever in my Bronco fan life I am pleased that we won’t play this week, to where every other season I would hate to be without my team playing for a week.

    HOW SAD IS THAT?

  9. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, I misspoke up top of the blog, this was our fourth loss in a row, not our third as I said, so McD has now repeated a four game losing streak, the very exact thing he said he worked on all off season to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. TALK IS CHEAP COACH.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Great to the point article about the game by Woody at the DP.

  11. BlazinAsian52 says:

My honest opinion is to discuss the situation with Tebow and Orton. Explain to Orton that we just want to get Tebow some experience. Since we’re not working towrads anything start playing some of our younger guys to gain more experience. That way it will give our guys the rest of the season and offseason to get entirely healthy. Then, if there is football next year, maybe we can put a better product on the field.
The fact is we can’t beat a 1-6 bal team, heck I’m not sure we can beat anyone at this point. Better to just lick our wounds and work on getting healthy and our younger guys some game experience.
I’m sure I’ll get kicked in the teeth about not being a true fan. We’re all “true fans” because we keep watching our team get there butts kicked week in and week out. It takes a true fan to keep watching after poor performaces each week, it takes a true fan to try and stay positive, it takes a true fan to defend your team at work, it takes a true fan to still wave your teams colors in the front yard, it takes a true fan to never give up, but it also takes a true fan to know when enough is enough, when the glass is no longer half full or half empty, but bone dry. I takes a true fan to know when it is better to stay down then keep getting your teeth kicked in.
The McD regime is over…it started 6-0 and ended in a blaze of disaster. Its time to call the experiment off before we completely burn down the lab….we tried, we failed, we hopefully learned from our mistakes, and hopefully we’ll do better next time..it ends…the pain must end….it must end….

  12. baylinorcrush says:

And one by one the fans fall in line with reality….

    Better late than never.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Problem is Bowlen and McD as usual are the last ones to get it.

  14. BlazinAsian52 says:

I don’t get it do the losses not affect McD in any way emotionally? Doesn’t he have a concience standing up there feeding us full of the exact same BS every week….”they out performed us” “they made more plays then we did” “they had the same jet lag we had to deal with”. McD should’ve been a politician the way he feeds us full of BS and then never delivers…I say it is time for an impeachment.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

You forgot the main one: We didn’t execute.

  16. Crazyhorserider says:

    Note to Baylinorcrush

Not much to disagree on, and although I am English I do agree that having a team in England, and games in England, is a bit of a joke. When I see the Broncos it has to be in the US because truthfully there is no place quite like it. I spend all my vacations in America, have done for over 20 years, because i just love the place, and football belongs there.

Re the Broncos specifically it is hard to move from an habitual winning team under Shanahan to an habitual losing team under McDaniel’s. When I became a Bronco’s fan it was because of their spirit and passion which was mirrored by the fans. To hear the loss of hope in your realistic comments does bring it home to me that we have no hope this year or in the foreseeable future unless we have passion injected back into the team.

This passion has to come from the top and through the draft, we cannot rely on veteran passion which fades all too soon.

For McD to change the whole ethos of the team so that they cannot defend and cannot run the ball indicates to me that he is the biggest Joke and we have been had. It was as if a mole had been sent into the organisation, not to spy on us but to destroy us. McD is the worst type of virus and we need a charismatic winner to save us from a slow lingering death. When I wake up in the morning I hope that it has just been a nightmare and to find out how real it is has become incredibly depressing. The worst thing is that I want to get rid of McDaniels so much that I sometimes think it is better if we lose games until we get rid of the loser.

    Does anybody else think that?

  17. BlazinAsian52 says:

I actually think that we’re 33rd in the league for rushing…the ball boys are even running the ball better than we are.

We don’t need to lose games to get rid of him, we just need Bowlen to see the big equation…

Inability to run the ball Inability to stop the run Giving up leads
    ————————– + ————————— + ——————–
    McD McD McD
Complete and utter, what seems like epic failure Everything else
    + ——————————————————– + ——————-
    McD McD

    the common denominator is McD

  18. baylinorcrush says:

Crazyhorserider, I wish it was that simple, losing the remaining games so Bowlen cans McD. Unfortunatly as I have stated many times, money rules this team for now, Bolwen cannot afford to yet have another Head Coach gone and pay for him to sip margaritas in Accapulco. With the Dumervil contract fiasco and the league’s future up in the air for next year, it is my feeling that Bowlen will wait out until next year plays out to decide what to do with McD, like it or not, I have pretty much made myself accept that, and if McD goes away sooner great, if he doesn’t I don’t keep myself opened up to more disappointments.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

We have now entered THE DREADFUL ZONE.

  20. sndvl says:

Thats 3 four game losing streaks.

  21. Crazyhorserider says:

    Thanks for the advice Baylin.

So if so much depends on next year what is likely to happen? Will we actually see a player strike? And what is Goodell doing about it?

Seems to me like they have plenty of time to sort things out

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

We need to bring in an experienced coach and GM,and let them see if they can draft some talent especially on Defense,if not we will be in the cellar for years to come,SD will climb out,OK will climb out,Hell KC done climbed out,we are all alone at the bottom of the well, woe is me……

  23. Yovi21 says:

ok well, I don’t think its fair to take Orton out, but I do think Tebow needs some REAL time under center. I expected to at least see him during the Oakland game, but no…If Tebow is going to run this franchise someday he needs to start throwing passes today! Get him throwing some, we all know he can do it!
