Broncos Appear in 2013 Pro Bowl

January 27th, 2013 - 9:23pm by Stuart Zaas

Five Broncos appeared in the 2013 Pro Bowl, led by starters and team captains Peyton Manning and Champ Bailey. The NFC came away with a 62-35 victory at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

Manning opened the game’s scoring with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green on a fourth-and-goal play on the AFC’s initial possession.

Bailey tied for third on the team with five defensive tackles and picked up two fumble return yards after taking a lateral from Bills safety Jairus Byrd. Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Vikings running back Adrian Peterson had trouble with a handoff exchange on the first play from scrimmage. Byrd picked up the ball at the NFC 9-yard line before lateraling to Bailey.

That play turned the ball over to the AFC Offense that converted the turnover into a 7-0 lead on the Manning-to-Green scoring strike.

Manning started the game and played about halfway through the second quarter and finished the game 6-of-12 passing for 43 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions.

Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas ranked second on the AFC with five catches and finished with 52 receiving yards and also made a special-teams tackle in his Pro Bowl debut.

Defensive end Elvis Dumervil posted one defensive stop in the game. Guard Zane Beadles played his first All-Star contest to round out the Broncos’ representation in the game.

62-35. what an absolute joke. Can’t see how any defensive player can say he did his best, even half best. Time to put this joke out of it’s misery.

  2. 1nOnlyTRB says:

It was actually a pretty nice game. I didn’t see last years but i heard it was horrible. You could see effort out there today. The score is only that lopsided because the AFC turned the ball over like 3 times in their 20.

There was effort out there. About as much as i would expect. Defenders were tackling and players were even fighting for yards. The score will always be this way for a few reasons:

    1. Its a passer league with all the elites on the same field
    2. The playbooks are ridiculously dumbed down to make for a simple game with only 1wk of practice(defensively and offensively)
    3. Relating to 2, defenses cannot even blitz
    4. Its a laidback game, they go for it on 4th down alot

RBs were really getting stuffed which was probably why they switched to more of an aerial show to give the fans something to enjoy and AJ Green was pheonomenal and there were alot of great plays. Alot of goofy moments too, like failed laterals, Jeff saturday coming over to AFC side for 1 final snap with his good friend manning, JJ Watt at WR (at one point he was a WR covered by JPP, JPP came away with the INT. It was hilarious).

To me this game isn’t supposed to be serious. Its supposed to be fun, with a bunch of elites having a good time and putting on a show and doing things u cannot get away with regularly. But at the same time u want to see effort and there was some out there today and I appreciated that. The pro bowl will never be as serious as a superbowl game, or play off or reg season or even preseason. Football is just not like basketball and other sports. Thats like asking boxing All stars to have an all star tournament virtually for free, not going on their record, but to fight with all their hearts. The rigors are just too much to take it too seriously. We want a tough game but if you think the players are the only ones that don’t want to get hurt, we as fans don’t want them to get hurt. Imagine losing peyton for next season because of the pro bowl. Or Bay Bay, or Champ. We would be pissed as fans as well. Just can’t have our cake and eat it too.

Thats my take at least. The sounds from the game and the week are enough entertainment in themselves.

As usual I completely missed it so I’ll take your word TRB, lol.

  4. Bronco_Turtle says:

My favorite was when Russell Wilson gave JJ Watt the Okey-Doke and just rolled out of the pocket like a baller… Wilson is the real deal!

  5. The Dane says:

If you compare it to a regular game it was terrible, If you compare it to pro bowls in general it was ok, if you compare it to last years game it was Awesome.

  6. Bronco_Turtle says:

    Well said Dane…

  7. SC_BR says:

I agree with TRB. Don´t know why people take it so seriously. It is supposed to be a friendly game a season celebration, just for fun. Why people would expect their idols to play hard and risk an injury with nothing on the line? If americans don´t like it anymore, maybe you should move it to another country. I´m sure most countries would love the chance to see all NFL stars together in an exhibition game

  8. strandoftds82 says:

    I didn’t watch it.

  9. brian_schneider says:

I watched the first quarter and a half. I did think it was cool to see Manning take a snap from Saturday again. The NFC center was able to play one snap on the AFC side of the ball. I saw Manning try to get the ball to Wayne. The game is nonsense, but that type of stuff is just kind of cool to see. I bet Manning thought he’d never take another snap from Saturday likewise Saturday snap to Manning.

  10. brian_schneider says:

I think Champ put on his pro bowl hat a week too soon, i think he got burnt less in the Pro Bowl than he did against the Ravens…..j/k

  11. RH709 says:

This Revis to Denver talk cracks me up.
    Reporters are so retarded.

I am sure some stupid reporter who thinks Champ is over the hill asked a dumb question like, “Mr. Elway, after what happened in the game against Baltimore are you looking to bring in some help? How about Revis?” Then Elway replied in standard fashion “We are always trying to improve. We will look into Revis as he is a great player.”

Then the Broncos will look into Revis but it will be like this… Is the cost of Revis worth $14M a year? No. Is Revis better than Harris, Carter or Bolden? Most likely. Is that talent worth the extra money? Not even close.

    There, we “looked” into it.

Instead the reported goes off and acts like it is a sure thing.
I just sit back and shake my head.

  12. brian_schneider says:

I think Harris and Carter really showed they’re capable. Going out and inking Revis would be a slap in the face IMO.

  13. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Well said dane

Its just hard to have a real game, not soley because the full effort isn’t there but because defenses can’t blitz, can’t disguise anything, it pretty much just leads to an offensive game. Its like … yea, um, just go out there and play man, or just go out there and play zone lol

I liked that one time, when Doom, had the NFC QB dead to rights. QB got it off in time, but in a regular game, Doom woulda punished the mess outta him LOL.

    Schneider,
Its stuff like that i appreciate. The stuff u would never see regularly. The random laterals, players playing out of position and showing their other skills, the sounds from the game. To me its just fun. i don’t think champ got burnt, there was a 24 getting burnt but that was Johnathan Joseph of the Texans. Champ did have one Endzone pass interference later in the game tho. and Ed Hauchuli was like:

“Yes, there are penalties in the pro bowl as well. Pass interefence, Defense, number 24″ Laughed out loud on that one.

  14. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I personally don’t like revis. Sure a good cover corner. Just don’t see the hype. I also don’t like CBs too scared or that believe they are too scared to tackle. Something i appreciate about champ. Best tackling CB ever, Bar none.

I am happy with Harris and Carter as well. Harris obviously being the superior one of the 2. Also if Porter can ever get on track and is brought back i personally think we will be fine. I still think Champ is a pheonomenal corner … He just cannot play on an island by himself anymore, not with these extremely talented youngsters. Just too fast.

But if a CB is the best player on the board come pick 28 … i can see that happening however.

    TRB

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

or believe they are too goo to tackle*

  16. brian_schneider says:

What about Bolden, thought he was supposed to be an impact player?

  17. RH709 says:

Brian. I wouldn’t say he wasn’t an impact player. He just hasn’t had an opportunity yet. Give the man some time.

Oh and for any of you that think the Champ needs to move to safety…looks like he is still shutting the place down.
    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/01/28/signature-stats-first-downs-allowed-cornerbacks/

  18. RH709 says:

Also, look who else made the list for the “shutdown crew”?

Which tends to answer your question about Bolden, Brian.

  19. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Impressive how chris harris was also a member of the shutdown crew.

Champ still does it and does it well. And with out safety help. He was good in regular season. He just messed up in one game, one important game, on prime time so now the fools who know nothing about broncos football but watched one game think he is over the hill or can’t cover. He is still a tremendous cover corner … but speed is still speed.

Only reason I would want champ at safety because he is a superior tackler, and he will never make simple mental errors like the one rahim made.

    TRB

  20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Bolden was also supposed to pitch in on returns but i think we can all safely say that Holiday got that on lock.

    TRB

  21. RH709 says:

PFF also had this nugget in their Oline article.

    4. Denver Broncos (2011 rank: 30)

    PB – 1st, RB – 16th, PEN – 17th

Stud: You think Ryan Clady (+27.0) liked blocking for Peyton Manning? He responded with a career year that is going to make him an even richer man.

Dud: Though he graded positively for the year, you’d likely want to see more push in the run game from Manny Ramirez (+3.0).

Summary: They had a job to do, and boy did they do it. Protecting their quarterback was their priority and in that regard they did exactly what was required. It started with the tackles, who were excellent in this regard, and not one player on the line ended with a negative grade in pass protection. The downside is they failed to consistently impose themselves in the run game, and this is a big area for improvement.

  22. RH709 says:

I know we all poked fun at ManRam (myself included) but he showed improvement over the year and ended decently. If he keeps that up and Kup comes back pretty good then we are pretty set. Add that JDs return and keep Kopen and see how Blake develops. The only hole would be a backup Tackle.

Oh course this is all just postulating.

  23. strandoftds82 says:

I like our CB’s and were we stand right now as a unit at that position. Our Safety position is good but not great and looking forward to seeing Q. Carter coming back. I’m torn over whether we should go after a S or not. I feel bad for Rahim Moore on that TD he gave up that tied the game just before OT. I partly blame Moore for that TD but most of the bleme goes to poor coaching and not putting Rahim in better position. If Rahim was an older wiser player, he’d not have to be told were to be on that bone-head play. He really should have know better. Rahim will learn from this. I’d like to see him in a Broncos uniform for 2013. I will say this, if we go after a Safety, I’m wanting Jairus Byrd. This guy doesn’t have a single weakness in his game and would give us a huge upgrade at the S position. IMO

  24. alaskanbronco06 says:

TRB the QB was Eli Manning.

The Pro Bowl is like any other All-Star game basically. Its to show the flash of offense and the Defense is so limited in what they can do. Most of the scores are similar to this years. Since 1998 only two (1998 and 2005) both teams had under 30 points. At least the defense showed effort this year instead of letting the offense just do whatever without trying like last year. This is a game to really just have fun that doesnt mean anything. Like seeing JJ Watt at WR and a few years ago Champ played WR often during that game and Marshall played Corner. The Pro Bowl is things like that. It means nothing so you cant compare it to the regular season. Its softened because the NFL and NFLPA dont want to see the players hurt in a game that means nothing. I loved that they allowed Saturday to snap it once for Peyton all though there are many throwing fits about it.

On another note Robert Ayers tweeted out a couple times during the game that he wanted Manning and Thomas pulled out because he didnt want to see them get hurt.

As for Denvers interest in Revis, unfortunately, it is high as Denver has made multiple calls to the Jets to see what they want. Before pulling the trade Elway Bowlen Fox and the rest of the staff will meet and discuss if Revis is worth the money he wants AND whatever Denver would have to send to get him. Also if his off field antics are worth it as well. At that point I really hope they say no, because to me I just dont see him being worth it.

  25. alaskanbronco06 says:

The announcers on the play where Doom couldve creamed Eli started talking about how in a normal game Eli would be eating turf so he should send his brother a gift basket with a thank you note for easing up to give to Doom.

  26. wolfedom says:

I have to chime in on this BS Revis stuff. We don’t need him and I don’t think the Broncos will make a move on him either. He sort of reminds me of Deon Sanders with his inability to tackle anyone. I just can’t see this happening. His off field stuff is a deciding factor also, remember quality is the key.

  27. alaskanbronco06 says:

A seven round mock has Denver taking Kwann Short DT Purdue, Jon Bostic LB Florida, Desmond Trufant CB Washington, Stepfan Taylor RB Stanford, Conner Vernon WR Duke, Josh Boyd DT Mississippi State and Branden Hansen OG BYU.

  28. alaskanbronco06 says:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1493146-players-every-nfl-team-must-target-in-free-agency-this-offseason/page/11

Some players Denver should target in FA. Ed Reed and Jairus Byrd are two of them. For those thinking we need Safety help either would be nice. Of course Byrd will probably be around longer.

  29. alaskanbronco06 says:

According to other reports Jets are also looking into Cromartie trades and many within the organization would prefer to keep Revis and trade Cromartie.

And some Bronco fans do want Revis. One guy suggested Doom and a 3rd for him.

  30. alaskanbronco06 says:

49ers QB Alex Smith will likely ask to be released before FA starts March 12 instead of being traded. He wants to choose where he goes not have it chosen for him.

  31. RH709 says:

Alex will have a decent shot at choosing where to go. I’m thinking KC or Philly would like to have him. Chip Kelly has an enticing argument if you ask me. Smith came from a spread offense and can do exactly what Kelly would want. Also, even though Kelly runs a spread, it is a running team first. That takes a lot of pressure off.

  32. strandoftds82 says:

AB, friday night I was driving home listening to Denvers 104.3 The Fan and Alfred Williams on his show with some other dude, forgot his name, but the topic was trade Revis for Doom and a high draft pick. Alfred said DO IT and the other guy said no way never. Alfred Williams was addament about it and said he’d do the trade in a heart beat. I SAY HELL, NO WAY!!

  33. strandoftds82 says:

I can see Alex Smith going to either of those two teams and turning them around.

  34. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand I dont want Revis and say HELL NO to sending Doom for him.

  35. RH709 says:

Keeping Doom will always be worth more than Revis. Sorry but I much rather have a guy who consistently disrupts a play on the front end then one that does on the back end.

  36. strandoftds82 says:

As a matter of fact, we need more pass rushers along with VonDoom. A team can never have enough pass rushers.

  37. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Doom and a third for Revis … ha … ill keep my doom thank you. Revis is not that good. And we are not in desperate need of a CB that we would sacrifice our pass rush … whoever said that had to be a Revis fan boy IMO

  38. strandoftds82 says:

LOL AB! A resounding Hell No at that! HaHa!

  39. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Alex Smith has options. Lets see

    Jets, Chiefs, Jags, Cards,

Would be the best in my book. Prefrably Chiefs. They already have a strong running game and a bunch of pro bowl caliber players. Instead on spending the first on Geno Smith. Get Alex smith. and spend the 1st overall on OT Luke Joeckel. Shore up that OL … OL is wht killed ried in Philly … no Vick.

    TRB

  40. RH709 says:

Unless the Cards draft 7 Olinemen, I think going there is asking to leave the game on a stretcher.

  41. RH709 says:

At least with the eagles they were within the top 20 Olines and that was mostly due to injuries. Get some starters back and they really are not too shabby. Pair that with Smith and Kelly’s version of the spread and you have a good offense.

  42. oldsouthstander says:

Is Champ the best CB ever? Definitely one of the best, but, as a youth I saw Dick “Night Train” Layne (sp?) play for the Detroit Lions. He was an interception machine and an absolutelty vicious tackler. Having seen both, I’d have to give Night Train the nod, but not by much. Somebody Compared Revis to Prime Time. Not even close. Prime was one of, if not the best, cover CB. Revis is good but not exceptional. The only thing they have in common is that neither could or would tackle. I’d bet that Champ averages more tackles per year than either Revis or Prime had in their entire career.

  43. strandoftds82 says:

And the Eagles come to Denver in 2013.

but i think they have grown accustomed to real american football across the pond, that the pro bowl would be a spit in their/your faces (I believe u are from over there) lol …. on the other hand being the fans you guys are im sure u would like to see all the all pros in one spot. I think there are other countries that have been trying to get in on the Football thing so the pro bowl might be good testing grounds to see their interests. Or take the show on the road and hit a different country every year lol. Hawaii however will always win my vote … mainly just because of tradition and history. Also because Hawaii is an american state without a football team with fans incapable and to far out to go on the road to watch a game. Plus we’ve got alot of great pacific islanders in the NFL and Hawaii just seems like an awesome get away.

    Have a great day all!!
