Broncos Agree to Terms with Joe Mays

March 18th, 2012 - 3:44pm by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos have agreed to terms to re-sign linebacker Joe Mays, the team announced on Sunday. Mays played all 16 games (12 starts) for the team in 2011 and ranked third on the club with 74 tackles.

He led the team with 7.5 tackles for a loss and posted 10 games with five or more tackles during the 2011 season, including the Broncos’ two postseason contests, which he started.

Mays, who will enter his fifth NFL season in 2012, has totaled 109 tackles in his career. He also has three pass breakups and one forced fumble.

A sixth-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2008 NFL Draft, Mays spent the first two years of his career with the Eagles before joining the Broncos via trade prior to the 2010 season.

He tallied 285 tackles in 43 games for North Dakota State University, where he earned first-team Division I-AA honors and was named the Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Lol just D i wasnt the one who said Gabbert crumbles. I believe it was ABbut i do agree.

Wasnt Mallet supposedly a world class jerk? Pass. He has clausen written all over him.

Thanks for clearing that up LAX. I have said many times that Tebow brought me here but the organization keeps me here.

  5. seweatherman1 says:

I just heard Manning will be wearing #18.

  6. Broncos LAX says:

KK that is true maybe it just gives them the same mind lol

  7. alaskanbronco06 says:

Gabbert crumbled under pressure in College and did in the NFL. He wont succeed unless he toughens up which i dont see happening hes to much of a pretty boy like Barkley. (at least Barkley is tough though!)

  8. Broncos LAX says:

Fair enough shaz a know that you are a fan of the team and is understandable to disagree with the team but like i said the FO has no obligation to Tebow they will put their vision of a winning product on the field for them it is not Tebow

  9. Broncos LAX says:

AB Gabbert is a handsome man lol that is fact

  10. mikew007 says:

Shaz, honestly I love your posts! No one wins or loses on the board…I hope not anyway.

Never shy away from what you believe and you have ALWAYS backed your guy TT!

You’ll never see me bash someone here or anywhere for their opinions. Lord knows I have mine and I share them freely. But I don’t expect people to agree, I welcome any and all opinions!

I am thrilled we have PM! I supported TT and wanted Orton benched! I loved Jake Plummer and hated Brian Griese! MY kids are 9 and 14 and both sport Elway Jerseys…and my 9 year old daughter has no idea who Elway is! I could go on and on….but I was never right or wrong…just a fan like the rest of us!

mallet is like clausen trb? really? and who said he was a jerk? i knew he was quirky and has made mistakes but seemed humble and hungry. i have no idea where you got that from but i’m thinking youre wrong on that one. he has a ton of promise and a rocket arm from what i’ve heard. i coulda missed something tho. as far as i know, unless you show me something, i say get him.

  12. DenverOrange says:

u know with Peyton behind center we are going to get more Prime Time games

  13. mikew007 says:

No Mallet for me. Or Gabbert…he was a reach for Jax.

  14. Mikeyb1203 says:

Im am a Broncos fan first but I think getting rid of Tebow will be a big mistake. He was the best QB of his class and had the best win percent of all QB’s over a 16 game period on a team that was 4-14 before he took over. I am hoping that EFX does not get offered what they are looking for and we keep him, with as much promise as he has and the fact that he is under contract it is stupid not to. Not to mention the next best thing out there is Luck and I dont see the colts getting snubbed twice in this lifetime.

Hope for the best but expect the worse. BTW is anyone else aware that we were lied to by the FO, Guess TT is not the starter going into training camp unless by an act of God.

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lbf, if they wanna go after him by all means they can. i hear thats why Mallet fell was because of his attitude, im not sure and maybe if i googled i could find something. Was just stating my opinion. I only compared him to clausen because clausen was another one who was supposedly “pro ready” and some deemed him the best in the draft but fell all the way till like the third round because of his attitude, and what do ya know, he sucks. Thats all. I know nothing of Mallet. If the FO wants him, they should do it.

  16. alaskanbronco06 says:

LBF Last year all pre-draft there were a lot of questions about Mallets behavior. Many former teammates spoke bad about him saying it was always about him that if he wasnt getting enough throws he would yell at coaching staff and audible plays to what he wanted. He wasnt very well liked. A lot of Execs in the NFL said that he is very full of himself and Clayton said that he come soff as a very rude young man and Mayock once said he was a prima dona at the QB position.

All that is stuff i heard last year before the draft.

  17. bronctario says:

I’m probably the only one on here that will think this, but I’m sorry to see Brady Quinn go (especially to the Chiefs). PLaying for the Browns last decade was a no way situation for anyone and he has been developing very nicely as a Bronco backup. He had a 29 on the wonderlic, He was as big and as fast as TT, but showed incredible arm strength and accuracy during the preseason last year and seems to have been humbled since his draft. I think if they could have resigned him for cheap to learn the offensive command that Manning has, it would have been a fairly smooth transition between the two in a few years. Just my opinion though.

  18. alaskanbronco06 says:

PM still hasnt put pen to paper.

  19. mikew007 says:

Bornctario…you are not alone. Not a huge fan of Quinn but thought he was the best option to backup PM…front office tried to sign him but he took less money to go to the Chiefs…feels he has a chance to start there.

  20. alaskanbronco06 says:

Mike not only that but Quinn didnt want any part of the QB drama that was going on in Denver. According to him in a tweet he sent out shortly after signing with KC

  21. mikew007 says:

Hard to blame him I suppose.

  22. Just D says:

If Mallet is that good…why would the Pats trade him to a conference rival that just gain Brady’s Nemessis! I can see qbs in the NFC but no one will be crazy to trade with us in the AFC unless they get our 1 pick in the draft. Unless you are Cleveland or Washington LOL.
Anyway, the 2 best QBS in the last 12 years has been Manning and Brady…So why should they trade when he is learning behind Brady himself. I like the fantasy football dreamers…makes this exciting lol.

  23. mikew007 says:

Time to go watch the press conference! Like it or not…this is a huge day in the history of our Broncos. Arguably one of the best QB’s in the game today is now our QB! How you feeling Raiders, Chiefs and Chargers???

Like Richard Seymour of Oakland said…they will be losing some sleep thinking about Denver Now!!

  24. bronctario says:

I was certainly not big on the Quinn trade (was a big fan of the grit that Hillis brought) but learned to appreciate him- and he was the Unitus Golden Arm with with those Irish boys!- but can undertand his resentment and even his GQ statements; he really did get short sheeted the last 2 seasons (though I’d be a fool to complain about the 8-8 finish and beating those steelers in the wildcard round)

  25. alaskanbronco06 says:

Theyre going to annouce Tebow was trade for 3 1st rounders and two 2nds to Jax in the press conference!

    LMAO Just Kidding lol

  26. alaskanbronco06 says:

Lax I LOVE YOU BRO Thank you for the word that Denver is FINALLY going after Porter! LOL

  27. Tide Bronco says:

I can’t believe you guys don’t remember that Ryan Mallet had a drug and alcohol problem, and even discussed it at the Combine last year. That was what caused his draft stock to plummet. It was pretty big news while he was at Arkansas.

  28. alaskanbronco06 says:

Tide i knew there was something i was missing outside of his attitude.

  29. Broncos LAX says:

Mallet has a lotta issues I know lol and YES PORTER must sign. PM attracts em

  30. alaskanbronco06 says:

Keep them coming! Lofton Trufant McClain Hayes Saturday Clark Stokley Ted Ginn Thats all.

  31. mikew007 says:

Porter and Clark….that would be very strong!

  32. Tide Bronco says:

I hope they have disallowed any Tebow questions for PM’s press conference. Talking about awkward….

  33. mikew007 says:

Man, the Broncos media room is FULL!

  34. alaskanbronco06 says:

Tide that would be. I hope the show enough respect not to but i doubt it. There will be at least 5 questions about Tebow UNLESS PM of anyone from Denver asks that there be no questions about Tebow.

  35. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Tracy porter is a young guy … i like the idea. He can start instantly. Woulda been cooler if Dennis Allen was still here tho.

    TRB

  36. Broncos LAX says:

Tide there will not be Tebow walk

  37. louisianabroncofan says:

ok well i didnt know all of that alaskan. i knew he had some behavioral issues coming out of college but havent heard anythin out him since. to me that tells me things may have changed, and really some behavioral issues in college dont really bother me. but the talent is there, unlike clausen, who i liked until i saw him play in the nfl. just doesnt have it. mallet lit it up in the preseason so theres hope maybe. we need a 2nd stringer and potential future qb and i stand by mallet being a good guy to bring in. nothings guaranteed tho.

  38. Broncos LAX says:

    talk*

  39. mikew007 says:

    Showing Manning’s new ORANGE # 18 jersey!

  40. 1nOnlyTRB says:

unfortunately questions cannot be disallowed (i dont think, freeom of press) but i hope they have the tact and decorum to avoid that. But thier job is to ask questions they believe the fans want to hear so expect Tebow questions. Hopefully only aimed at FO and not Manning … cuz THAT would truly be awkward. Im sure manning looks down on Tebow (i dont mean that in a bad way) most conventional QBs do. Like brady when he came to denver and decided to the fans what a real QB looked like or some nonesense like that. Because they booed him when he came out on the field for warm ups

    TRB

  41. alaskanbronco06 says:

LBF Treu but how many people pay attention to what a backup QB does especially when their backing up Brady?

  42. alaskanbronco06 says:

TRB they can ask for there to be no questions about a topic however they must provide a legitimate reason as to why they dont want questions about it. Also if they ask they dont have to answer.

  43. millertime2 says:

Yah, theve already said that this is a interduction, welcomeing manning press conference.

  44. mikew007 says:

    What Alaska said!

  45. bronctario says:

Wow, the pats really loaded up on older receivers in FA. Should denver do that too? Pick up a guy like Burress (he’s not my first choice)? He did show that he still has some real ability out there last season with the jets.

  46. alaskanbronco06 says:

IMO We should go with a younger guy that could step up after Manning retires and help the new QB like Decker and DT.

  47. 1nOnlyTRB says:

clearly this presser was supposed to start at 3pm mountain time cuz im tired of waiting lol

    TRB

  48. mikew007 says:

Going ALL IN with Manning dictates that we look at the older WR’s from the Colts…Stoke, Clark etc….I think. Win now.

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    here we go
