Broncos Agree to Terms with Joe Mays

March 18th, 2012 - 3:44pm by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos have agreed to terms to re-sign linebacker Joe Mays, the team announced on Sunday. Mays played all 16 games (12 starts) for the team in 2011 and ranked third on the club with 74 tackles.

He led the team with 7.5 tackles for a loss and posted 10 games with five or more tackles during the 2011 season, including the Broncos’ two postseason contests, which he started.

Mays, who will enter his fifth NFL season in 2012, has totaled 109 tackles in his career. He also has three pass breakups and one forced fumble.

A sixth-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2008 NFL Draft, Mays spent the first two years of his career with the Eagles before joining the Broncos via trade prior to the 2010 season.

He tallied 285 tackles in 43 games for North Dakota State University, where he earned first-team Division I-AA honors and was named the Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Addai is good out of the backfield tho, god I miss those screens.

  2. millertime2 says:

    TRB, lmao thanks

  3. Broncos LAX says:

Tide my apologies lol and budette??? Never heard it that way but I will make sure I have that straightened out.

Yup JAXK would offer more then MIA because they are just as focused on ticket sales… lol TIM TEBOW day for a player on the opposing team??? Are you kidding lol

  4. alaskanbronco06 says:

Lax i really hope not…..We have one injury prone RB and thats more than enough! Ugh! We dont need every former Colts cause we have Manning! I mean he only won one SB in Indy with them! Saturday and Clark is just fine! Thats it! IMO

  5. bronctario says:

Miller, Tripuka is the Broncos QB from the ^0′s who had # 18 retired. And LAX you’re right, I hope JAX really wants the seat sold and goes all in from TEbow.

  6. Broncos LAX says:

AB I agree I jst see it happening because as a whole Addai Clark Saturday and Tamme would help acclimate the offense thats where it becomes very possible

  7. alaskanbronco06 says:

Lax MIA may want Tebow for the media spotlight and cause Ireland needs to do something to keep fans. They are about to mutiny from the moves Ireland is doing.

  8. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea they have already answered who frank is. he offered manning his number sayign that 50 years of retirement is long enough and he would be honored.

Moreno is also good out of the backfield and in open space and is equally as injury prone as addai … i don’t see why we need another moreno … not unless we are gonna cut moreno but then we would still be stuck with a moreno except his name will be addai and would have a longer history of injuries.

    TRB

  9. Broncos LAX says:

Tripuka already stated he wants his number unretired if Manning wants it

  10. mikew007 says:

    Millertime…google TRIPUKA!

Tide, I love your passion for Tebow. Time will tell on him and if you are right and everyone in the Broncos Org is wrong…then his release or trade is the best thing that could ever happen to him.

  11. alaskanbronco06 says:

Ugh Lax LOL I could live with Tamme cause he is young and NOT injury prone! Addai though! UGHHH Thats what i have to say on that! I will throw up if we sign him! We dont need another injury prone back! Ugh!

Anyways, Clark and JT (if he steps up) would be two dangerous TEs. IMO

  12. Broncos LAX says:

TRB honestly I like Moreno more and he is younger but like I said above some of the signings will be to make Manning comfortable and help acclimate the rest of the Offense with the new playbook

  13. Broncos LAX says:

Mike not to him for him… Lol I have always said if I am wrong about Tebow I will happily state it.

  14. mikew007 says:

I still like Moreno too…good hands and runs well after the catch out of the backfield…might do really well with PM.

  15. bronctario says:

What about moving Moreno (if he returns) to the slot or using him as an H back, the last 2 years he’s been more productive with screens and hitch passes anyway. He just seems to have trouble hitting the holes through the line.

  16. Broncos LAX says:

and Addai fits that bill… thats all not that I want Addai. You guarantee me a healthy Addai I’d take that but thats not a guarantee he has always had injury issues.

  17. Broncos LAX says:

Bronctario he actually ran well last season in the 2 games he had significant action. He will mostlikely still be used how you stated

  18. alaskanbronco06 says:

I can hear it now…..Manning passes to Moreno he sidesteps one tackle stiff arms another hes hit at the 33 and call the trainers Moreno is hurt YET again! Now Addai is in the backfield Manning hands it off Addai is through the hole hit at the 25 awww he broke his leg…..Its going to be hard for Denver to lose two RBs in the first game of preseason……LMAO

  19. Broncos LAX says:

John Clayton reported maybe NE trades Ryan Mallet to Denver for Tebow. Behind Manning would be the best spot for Mallet and he can try maturing. He was the best passer in the draft last year

  20. alaskanbronco06 says:

Trading with NE always bites us in the tushy

  21. louisianabroncofan says:

cracking up w that one trb. ya why trade one moreno for another, they are very similar. i say we should give moreno another year and see what he can do. having manning keep the d honest will help a ton, because he cant break through 8 man fronts. at all. of course theres still the draft. and LAX, youre not wrong, so no worries.

  22. bronctario says:

Now how do we replace a game changer like Royal in the return game? Bring back Quan Cosby? I’m not a fan of using top WR’s in that position and also like smaller speedsters, I think Thomas and Decker should be lightly used as returners to keep them healthy for their natural positions.

  23. bronctario says:

Oh nope, Cosby is now a Colt

  24. killerkod says:

And so the debate of PM being too old and injured vs. TT, who needs a lot of work but will get better if with a team that believes in him and gives him the opportunity lives on! lol

Sure, PM is somewhat of a gamble at this point. No one knows exactly how he’ll perform………..but I know one thing, when it comes to actually running an offense……..PM at 50% is still better than TT at 100%…….and even with another year as starter, I still believe that to be true. IMHO.

PM can get to the line, see the D and call differnent protections and plays……..and will make our O-line perform at a much higher level. He’ll also get rid of the ball faster and not have to take repeated sacks.

TT is not the QB type they want for the franchise. How can anyone fault them for that. They have a vision of how they want the team to be………..and unfortunately TT doesn’t fit in their plans. It has nothing to do with disloyalty……..or them trying to set TT up for failure. He’s just not the guy they want and they went out and got the guy they think is the best fit.

    High rish = High Reward

Or it could come crashing down like the market in 2008. Who knows? But I can tell you one thing…………I’m really looking forward to seeing this offense on the field next season……..and seeing how the D plays behind them. I applaud the FO for doing what they feel is the right thing for this organization and bringing in the calibre of player such as PM.

  25. louisianabroncofan says:

heck ya, i hope thats true. mallet in a few years might be pretty awesome, and manning will def help him. manning wont be getting any younger so his replacement will have to be found. that could be a great replacement eventuallly

  26. Broncos LAX says:

    KK couldnt agree more lol

  27. millertime2 says:

Hey AB, have you heard anything about denver getting the chargers back up QB?

  28. mikew007 says:

Hard to argue with KK’s post.

  29. millertime2 says:

Volek from san diego was released

  30. mikew007 says:

    Manning Presser in 30 min!

  31. Yovi21 says:

Cassius Vaughn should be huge in the return game!

  32. killerkod says:

I am just licking my chops to see the insane play action game we’ll have next season…………we’re gonna have opposing D’s so far off balance they’ll be guessing at what play is being run.

  33. DenverOrange says:

We Have a better O Line then Jax Gabbert would be ok with me

  34. Just D says:

Broncos need to keep their draft pick and get either a DT or CB. Making that trade for Wallace is going to be costly now that there are no real wr in FA. Pitt will try and match it but even if they dont..we will have problems next year in both FA and draft. As for some of you here..let me get some of that juice that you all are drinking cause their is no way anyone in the league will give up a 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 for Tebow!! When all teams know that if Broncos dont make a CHEAP TRADE..They will have to CUT Tebow Loose!
Then other teams can deal with him directly and eliminate the middle man in JE. As for other that keep saying that they will like to have Gabbert here as the backup..Now that is a JOKE. He is the worst QB in the league. TRB is right that the guy crumbles. Tebow took hits and never complain. Either way, the Tebow issue should not be mention anymore because he is gone anyway. As far as getting another rookie QB in the draft..I hope FO dont waste a pick on that because in PM career in Indy..he took all the snaps and his backups never played..even if indy was winning by 30 plus points in the 4th quarter. Get a guy like brunnel who will cost nothing to get and at least he is experience in holding the CLIP BOARD lol. You dont need to get another rookie here and pay him over 2mil to hold the board. Save all the money you have left and get the skill players for PM and then when PM retires..you get a journeyman and a rookie qb because under PM they will never learn anything. Just ask his replacements last year in Indy. Like they say, you can learn everything in books but if you dont get a chance to apply it..It will be a waste of time!!

  35. mikew007 says:

NO HUDDLE a mile high???? Wow…the O2 tanks will be getting used up by opposing D’s!

  36. Just D says:

Besides manning, adams and woodward who else did FO sign?

  37. killerkod says:

the dymanic of the blog changed when TT came to town……….and changed even more when he became the starter last season.

I’m curious as to how it will change once again when he’s no longer here.

  38. shaztah says:

So LAX what you are saying is that since I am a fan of Tebow and don’t agree with the FO then I should go away? I have not been too harsh or anything but I am not leaving. BTW How does anyone know what Tebow can or can not do GUARANTEED? Please….Just watch and see what he becomes then I hope you will at least admit that you were wrong. If he fails I will do the same but I am not giving up until he decides not to play anymore.

  39. UKBroncos says:

Nothing like the debates on this blog! It’s been like this for years!

Just think the FO can’t keep rebuilding, as by the time a develpmental QB comes good, Champ will be gone, Doom will be old, Miller may want to leave…

You get a HOF QB without giving anything up – you gotta take it. Look how many other teams wanted it. Look at our odds now.

Be happy Bronco fans it’s all a gamble. Only one team out of 32 can win it. At least our FO have b@lls and they have full-on credibility.

    UK loving it

  40. Broncos LAX says:

KK no more flgator and armadillo orton lol hopefully!!! JD also Joe Mays lol

  41. shaztah says:

So I guess we don’t need our OC anymore if we get rid of him we can save even more money.

  42. mikew007 says:

NFL Netwrok will have one on one with PM after the Press Conference…should be very interesting!

  43. alaskanbronco06 says:

Millertime I dont like Volek. I think we will do fine to draft a QB this year Foles or Cousins. Not Weeden he is to old (28) to be coming in via the draft he needs somewhere he can start sooner than later. I dont like Gabbert he lacks a toughness factor that cant be taught. Mallet thinks to highly of himself IMO and i dont really like him. Every player thinks their the best but Mallet takes that to a whole new level. Hes to much about himself from what i gathered last year before the draft. IMO sticking with Foles or Cousins this year or a QB next year is the best option and just trade Tebow for picks.

  44. mikew007 says:

    Now now Shaz…

McCoy will be needed more than ever to teach everyone the offense. Coaches don’t count against the cap so …..

  45. Broncos LAX says:

Shaz please read through my posts. I said they FANS who are ONLY fans of Tebow and not the TEAM will be gone there is a difference because I also stated that there are Broncos fans who are fans of Tebow… Unless you are only here on this blog because of Tebow then that post was not directed at you. It is the guys like FLGator and Armadillo_Orton who are only fans of Tebow

  46. killerkod says:

I actually think flgator and armadillo were the same person………their posts were almost identical all the time. lol

  47. shaztah says:

Ok Mike see I just learned something new.
