The Broncos on Saturday waived/injured running back Mario Fannin and claimed running back C.J. Gable off waivers from New Orleans.
Fannin suffered a knee sprain in practice Thursday afternoon.
Gable racked up 1,566 rushing yards in his four-year career at the University of Southern California, with four 100-yard games. He also had 1,196 career kickoff return yards.

Booing Orton AND TT … well, Im no Orton fan but even I wouldn’t boo the man in a scrimmage. Maybe in a real game if he is stinking up the joint lol. Tebow on the other hand was going up against the first team D with second team OL. Some people just expect too much too soon. Its a scrimmage for goodness sakes. i hope they at least cheered for Quinns TD. I was dissapointed that on 2 drives Orton couldn’t get the ball in the endzone tho. Redzone issues persisting. Fans gotta do better. I agree with ayers as well HOF. Plus a scrimmage is hard to tell, one side has to lose, and both sides are broncos, so for all we know, Offense was doing well but defense had improved and did better. TRB out…
Well, he’s got it right. This isn’t an individual sport & whether they are at practice or in a game, we should support the TEAM not certain individual players. Of course we all have our favorites but no one on this team is a one-man show. What bugs me more is that this happened at a practice. A time where you should get your mistakes out of the way, if it was a game I’d be a little (not a lot) more understanding at the booing of a player. Ridiculous.
Thx for the info Bay. I dunno if TT was being booed but for now im taking imreadys word for it. TRB
BTW Bay, I think we went Gabe over Hamilton, because Gabe is younger and has less of a injury history. He was undrafted in this years draft.
What we need is a fast back that can make people miss in open space, but all those are gone. Norwood, sproles, Derrick Locke, Noel Devine. ETC … They may not be everydown backs but all you need them to do is hit 1 homerun out of 3 plays a game. Fannin coulda been that guy. Most of the top tier RBs in the league are fast guys and every team has a burner on their squad ie KC Jamaal Charles but also Dexter McCluster, the specialist. We need 1 I think. TRB
My only point about Gable is Payton said Hamilton was one of the hardest cut of his career but said nothing about Gable, that’s all.
Devine got cut/walked out on the Eagles after the 2nd day. He’s still available
I’m WVU alum I keep tabs on him ha
Some of the DP bloggers who went to the scrimmage today can’t say enough bad stuff about Tebow, whether he got booed or not no word on that, but this is some of their observations:
-Tebow looked absolutely AWFUL today. I was a Tebow supporter initially, but he’s just not ready to be an NFL QB. Not even close. After seeing a few practices and then the scrimmage today, I don’t see how Tebow is any better than third string. He holds the ball way too long. His decision-making is clearly taking longer than NFL speeds will allow. He overthrew a wide open receiver on a seven or eight yard pass; he threw a couple of passes right at at the receivers’ feet; he was sacked two or three times in just a few plays.
-That was odd – but Tebow’s God-awful passing under NO pressure was unfathomable. He missed BADLY on a wide open bootleg then threw a BOUNCE pass on a quick flanker screen. Those are passes he HAS to make. He was VERY indecisive even when he had all day to throw. He’s nowhere near capable of being our starting QB.
And of course some went after Orton too:
Actually, I think the scariest thing is that Orton slid on the 3 yard line. Really? Really. The no-hit rule on QB’s doesn’t make you feel safe enough? Can we get him fitted for the John Travolta Bubble? Seriously!
And this is how Fox analyzed it:
“Tim had the roughest duty going against the No. 1 defense. That’s tough, but he’s a tough guy, and he made some things happen,” head coach John Fox said.
6 weeks to go and we will all know a lot more about it, starting Thursday, can’t wait for a Bronco football game, even if it’s just preseason.
I was just coming up with a reason they might have gone gabe over hamilton even tho peyton said that. Just a stab in the dark
Wow really HOF … either the guy is a tool or thier cap room finally ran dry. Thx for letting me know he is available again. Guys shifty. I hear he has had a bit of a history tho. But so did Blount and he just OWNED last year. Hasnt been a issue for the Bucs …. yet….
I root for UCONN and I couldn’t stand devine when he was w/ wvu. Unfortunatley my favorite RB in this draft ( Jordan Todman) was picked up by SD. He carried the Huskies to that Big East Confrence Title.
Sounds like Tebow is having stage fright and Orton the usual fear of being hit, LOL.
Devine had a brutal childhood and has certainly had his ups and downs off the field.
He left after his second day at Eagles camp, he just walked out. From what it sounds like, he got the vibe he was just going to be a camp body and didn’t want to be in that situation.
Devine when healthy was unstoppable. Underrated strength and shed tacklers with ease. Such a low center of gravity.
If he would have came out after his Junior year, he would have been a 3rd-4th round pick. The toe injury he suffered against LSU never healed and was nagging him his entire season.
Would have been an interesting backfield in Philly if he would have stayed
DIon Lewis and Mccoy both from PITT
Owen Schmitt and Devine both from WVU
Talk about tension ha
True Bay but I am more dissapointed in Orton. Because he is the vet, and we know he is currently better than Tim. He is our starter, and going up against the second team and not being able to score is dissapointing. Tim on the other hand we know has poor accuracy, but he was also going up against first team studs with second team line and players. (or so im told). They both gotta do better. Quinn is the only one that came out smelling like roses lol. Preseason will tell alot. And im looking forward to it. In scrimmages one side has to lose, and both sides are broncos so its bitter sweet. Plus the D probably has practiced against the Os plays a million and 1 times. So Ill curb my excitement for the D, and remain hopeful for the O and see what happens Thursday. TRB out…
You mean not like a million and 1 times but a week and a day maybe, LOL.
I now think Quinn should be the starter, and on that note see you all later.
Orton would have scored but he slid! If he would’ve have dropped a shoulder, he would have got layed on by a big but the defender (sorry guys I was further away than when I was dove valley and my vision isn’t great with making outt jersey numbers) was definitely to far away to stop him from getting in. First everybody booed him than everybody started laughing. I thought it was poetic, but I try to do like TRB and keep my mouth shut at practice. These guys don’t need that. I can say he was decisive all the way to the red zone though, and during 7 on 7 before the scrimmage he was decisive in the red zone too. He’s hands down the fastest with his reads but that’s not a surprise it it?
Bay, I cannot believe those bloggers! No one was ever WIDE open. He did miss on that screen but I think there was a misunderstanding about the route. Don’t know who’s fault that was. And by the way these “sacks” were not actual sacks. I think he went to the ground one time, and I might even be wrong and he never hit the ground. I have each one of his scrimmage plays on video so I’ll review. But for player safety (I imagine) the refs were blowing the whistle before the defender could get more than a finger on him. One of the times they blew the whistle the defender had an arm wrapped around him and he looked like he was about to break free into open field. To assume that he would be sacked every time he was touched, would be to ignore not only his entire college career but his three NFL starts as well. That sort of practice stuff does not translate to how he’ll do on gameday. Dude’s not just gonna take a sack on a lot of these plays. Anyone who doubts can watch everything he did in preseason and in his starts last year. Just wanted to clear that up for you guys. The sky isn’t falling. Tim looked good during 7 on 7 as well. I can’t remember how many plays he ran but he only had two incompletions.
Brady was lookin good (3rd team vs. 3rd team so who knows who had the advantage). The sun was getting unbearable though so we got up to find a shadier seating area. By the time we sat down he was done so I can’t tell you much.
imready is a hate monger….. I don’t believe a word out of his fingertips…..
I can justify boo birds at 59-14 thrashing. But at a practice? A practice? Cmon man were talking about a practice! Unbelievable
Orton sliding? No big deal seeing as how you live for the next play. It’s not like he was playing in a Superbowl. Still just practice. Had he went head first and suffered an injury….(though I think that’s what the majority is hoping for anyway). Geeesh
Cmon Broncos Country. We need to be a little classier representing our beloved Orange & Blue
A Chiefs fan, Raiders fan and BRONCOS fan were climbing up a mountain. Arguing the entire way to the top over whom is most loyal. The Chiefs fan yells “This is for KC”, and jumps off the cliff. Not to be outdone, the BRONCOS fan yells “This ones for Denver!” and proceeds to push the raider fan off the cliff….
Congratulations #84 and GO BRONCOS 2K11
Nice sndvl, I like it!!
ESPN NFL – Giants 1st-round pick CB Prince Amukamara out indefinitely with fractured bone in left foot
Sucks for them.
I guess we should count ourselves lucky its only been Fannin with a major injury so fast (not to jinx us). Thats tough for Prince. Ill keep praying for all our guys to stay healthy.
Funny stuff SNDVL … Im guessing the Charger Fan was at the bottom of the mountain cuz when he saw the challenge he choked? lol
Just watched the Hall of Fame induction via DVR. Sharpe really stole the show. Great speech.
Interesting that the little kid next to coach Billick was wearing a Bronco hat during the ceremony.
Sharpe was truly inspirational. Could we have expected any thing less from number 84?
It does not say much for a fan to be booing your own players at a practice. Folks need to support our team. They are out there for us by the way, no matter who starts, they are out there in orange and blue representing Bronco Country. There will be the time to do the booing, but at a practice is not it.
At least Fox acknowledged he put Tebow in the situations that he did and that he (Tebow) made a good showing. Sounds like Fox was impressed with what he saw in Tebow’s play. Putting him on the field with 2nd string offense against the 1st string defense might show just where work needs to be done, on both sides of the ball.
Orton sliding at the 3. I will leave all comment on this to those that were there and saw it in person. If it happens in a real game though, I might not be so understanding.
Got to give kudos to Quinn. Looks like he was the only one that made a score crossing the magical line. So what if it was 3rd team vs. 3rd team. He still crossed the line.
Now on the HOF speeches. Congrats to Sharpe, and all of the inductees. You guys earned every bit of respect you received today. The speeches that I heard today should be recorded and played for every middle school, high school and college athlete in the country. Those guys spoke volumes about where their lives were and what it took to get where they were today. I have to say that the best move of the day was when Sanders completed his bust for the HOF. After his speech was over he said that his bust was not complete so he had to finish it. He took out his signature head wrap and put it on his bust. That was special!
BB&R, thanks a lot for your input from the scrimmage, until I see it with my own eyes Thursday obviously I got very little to go on so I like to hear as much as possible from guys actually there, but depending on their angle in the stands or whether they were in the john at a certain time sure can change perspective, haha, but I respect yours and I still hold on to Fox’s words yesterday that when he placed Tebow and the second team O against the 1st team D he put him in a tough spot and he feels he still did some good stuff out there. 6 weeks to go, if the competition is indeed open as they claim it is not over until the fat lady sings, and Orton has been regressing of some sort for the last few practices on what I can gather, and Quinn on the other hand doing opposite and looking better with each practice.
So as anyone could attest with have ourselves a perfect storm with all the ingredients coming together to make this the biggest Quarterback Quagmire of all time, so brace yourselves.
And LMAO @ OC and sndvl.
BTW, loved to see the video of Tebow after the scimmage about how he praised Elvis, Elvis this Elvis that, absolutely fantastic that the most expensive player on our squad is seemingly returning better than ever, as far as I’m concerned he needs to earn everyone of those 14 mil plus dollars this season!
Funny, just saw Legwold is lending me a hand about Doom this morning:
Saturday afternoon at Invesco Field at Mile High, 17,982 fans got to see the big difference that pressure on a quarterback can make.
“It didn’t take long, did it?” Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. “You can see what it can mean. That’s how you want to look on defense.”
Defensive end Elvis Dumervil stole the show during the practice session that included a scrimmage.
In his first action at the Broncos’ stadium since the 2009 season finale, Dumervil had two sacks in his first seven plays against the second-team offense and helped create another — by rookie outside linebacker Von Miller — before the starters had finished their work for the day.
“I was just trying to come out here and show what I can do,” Dumervil said. “I was just excited to be out there in front of the fans and with my teammates. I missed it a lot. I can’t wait for the season to start.”
Saturday was the first public showing of the Broncos’ defensive makeover. Dumervil and Miller figure to be the cornerstones of that effort.
Hard to argue that fact, we are seemingly set as far as pressuring QBs and with two guys who were NOT on the squad last year, so I tend to truly believe that it will turn out to be true, however stopping the run is a different matter all together and with us pressuring the QBs relentlessly it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the oppsition will keep dishing out their running game right up the middle at us, and that’s where the new lately acquired Dlinemen come into play, a much different story there, improved on paper yeah, but it hasn’t shown on the field yet from what I can gather.
And remember every team in our division is built for and loves the run, so it’s not hard to figure out what we will be up against is all I’m saying.
Until we can stop it they will run it, the word is clearly out that we can’t stop anyone with our last place position in the league against the run.
Since I posted around a dozen posts yesterday about Shannon, I will let him do the talking this morning, courtesy of Patrick Saunders:
On ESPN’s decision last season to use the conservative talk-show host on its NFL pregame coverage:
“I don’t know if Rush Limbaugh knows the difference between a screen porch and a screen play. We’ll see.”
On quarterback Jake Plummer, after he signed with the Broncos before the 2003 season:
“I think Mike (Shanahan) and the organization have put a lot of eggs in his basket. We just hope he doesn’t trip on his way to the market.”
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella:
“The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”
Providing sarcastic solace for Steelers fans after the Broncos beat Pittsburgh 24-21 in the 1997 AFC championship game:
“Stay away from the Allegheny, the Ohio and the Monongahela! I hope they freeze those three rivers tonight because I’d hate to see anybody plunging to the bottom of ‘em.”
When asked in 1996 if the AFC ever would get respect if it didn’t win a Super Bowl:
“No, and they shouldn’t. You’re only great if you win something. I mean, Alexander wasn’t Alexander the Mediocre or Alexander the Average. He was Alexander the Great, and there’s a reason for it.”
Quoted in a Sports Illustrated cover story before Super Bowl XXXIII:
“People say, ‘Since you got rich and famous, you’ve become insufferable.’ I say, ‘That’s not true. I’ve always been insufferable.”‘
On earning his degree in criminal justice from Savannah (Ga.) State:
“I was a terrible student. I didn’t graduate magna cum laude, I graduated ‘Thank you, Lawdy!’ ”
Speaking into a red telephone behind the Denver bench during the Broncos’ 34-8 rout of the Patriots at New England in 1996:
“The British are coming, the British are coming! Mr. President! We need the National Guard! We need as many men as you can spare because we are killing the Patriots! So call the dogs off! Send the National Guard, please! They need emergency help! Please! Help!”
On growing up poor in Glennville, Ga:
“We were so poor, a robber once broke into our house and we ended up robbing the robber.”
Interesting tidbit:
Several of the newest Broncos were held out of the scrimmage.
Defensive linemen Ty Warren and Derrick Harvey didn’t participate in any of the drills. Running back Willis McGahee and safety Brian Dawkins participated in the first part of practice but not in the scrimmage.
“They aren’t ready for (live contact) yet,” coach John Fox said. “Just being smart and keeping them healthy for (the) Sept. 12 (regular- season opener against the Raiders).”
And this seems to clearly demonstrates Fox is still trying to figure out what to do with the QQ:
When their first-team offense was on the field Saturday, the Broncos called three running plays and eight passing plays. Expect that ratio to eventually change.
“We’ll blend in the run,” Fox said.
Of course other than Moreno and Ball they didn’t have any backs, haha, so maybe I should forget the earlier analysis, LOL.
Linebacker D.J. Williams (thigh), wide receiver Eron Riley (undisclosed injury) and defensive tackles Louis Leonard (knee) and Mitch Unrein (knee) didn’t practice Saturday. Wesley Woodyard was the starter at weakside linebacker, replacing Williams.
DJ is having just as great an off seaon as last year, don’t get me started about him, lucky for him we have only one back up weakside LB who usually seems to run around with his head cut off, Woodyard, but maybe it’s not all that bad because that Hanburger LB who got enshrined yesterday said in his speech that actually he didn’t do anything more than running around like a chicken with his head cut off, and I am not kidding, exactly what he said, LMAO.
I`m just loking forward to the real act this thursday with my own eyes. Real action meaning no prctices but a preseason game. Yes!!
Bay. I am watching a replay of the HOF ceremony and reading this blog and as soon as I read your comment on Hanburger, he said what you quoted in his speech as I’m listening. Wow.!!! I enjoyed watching Hanburger as a kid. I’m also glad DJ is back at his natural “will” position but I think this is a bubble year for him. I said that last year too but he played inside quite a bit and not very well I might add so maybe he can rebound.
strands. Don’t expect anything really pretty from either team Thursday. Alot of talent to evaluate on both sides.
Bay…I hear we are interested in acquiring Matt Roth from the Dolphins to fill in behind and push DJ.
Thank god I’m not the only one concerned with the weakside LB position, thanks 007.
And yeah, the game Thursday will be a comedy of errors even more so than other first preseason games since this one will be just basically based on a two week off season preparation, but at least I will be witnessing it.
And like I argued against TRB yesterday we still need major help at the RB position, at least a decent RB and FB, we are way too thin there.
Hey Bay, I think that we will not run the ball as much as you are hoping for. The fact that we have not signed a FB is a sign to me. Also McCoy was bred under McD and had a high scoring passing offense and he is in control of the O. I think he will be tempted to use his best attack which is our WR’s.
Atlanta signed Snelling to a one year deal.
If we don’t run the ball I don’t like our chances at all, but I believe that is not accurate, Fox always runs the ball, McCoy or no McCoy.
Don’t forget McCoy and Fox worked together in Carolina and they always ran the ball, unless McD completely destroyed McCoy too, LOL.
….So Orton couldn’t get the ball in against our second team Defense?…I feel that we are in for another year of pathetic red zone play!
Yovi I think the red zone is going to be better than last year no matter who is quarterback. Like Bay said we’re only getting two weeks to prepare for the season so our problems from last year aren’t going to change over night. I think our defense is going to give us a lot of help almost immediately though.
Bay don’t get me wrong we will most likely run more than last year but I dont think it will be even close to how often Carolina did.
Had a feelign Snelling was out of reach. Assuming we even tried to reach lol
Maybe one of our TEs will be FB/Hback or whatever. Lord knows we got alot of TEs. Fells as a FB would be awesome. I dunno about his running skills but he sure can Block and he can catch as well.
Ball, Lance 5-9 220 26 3 Maryland
Gable, C.J. 6-0 205 23 R
Johnson, Jeremiah 5-9 218 24 2 Oregon
McGahee, Willis 6-0 235 29 9 Miami (Fla.)
Minor, Brandon 6-1 214 23 1 Michigan
Moreno, Knowshon 5-11 210 24 3 Georgia
Sylvester, Austin 6-1 248 R Washington
White, LenDale 6-1 235 26 6
Just a look at the RBs we currently have at camp. Out of All of them. The only ones worthy of Mentioning as it stands are McGahee, Moreno, Jeremiah Johnson and Ball. I like Jeremiah Johnson. Like what I have heard and read about him in practice. Ball on the other hand uggh but I guess he is good enough to play 4th string. I will miss Fannin truly. TRB
Remember what I said yesterday about how the sack count would be different if they were allowing tackles (and no I don’t advocate Doom smashing our QB’s in practice)?
This is what Tim said about it, “It was fun going against Elvis and Champ. Elvis makes it tough, but I told him if we were going to the ground things might have been a little different.”
TRB,
According to Xanders we have something close to 26 million left to spend. I have no doubt some of that will go toward getting depth at RB. I’m sure we don’t have to tell Fox that we need more RBs.
