Skillz, I am not wishing harm on Tebow. But from what I've seen from people who try to be too perfect is that they fall, and they fall HARD. I'd rather him fall small than fall hard.

So here's the deal on Tebow and money for the NFL. I could care less about box seats or jersey sales. I care some about the total number of seats sold in a stadium and whether or not it is actually full or just full enough to allow local television coverage - those are very different stats.

The real money in sports comes from advertising. For years pro sports have evaluated how to collect the maximum dollar from fans and still have little kids watch and fall in love with the game - becoming the next generation of fans. Baseball almost bankrupted itself by getting out of primetime, and having most of their games played after a kids bedtime on weeknights. (I believe that has been addressed by MLB)

So the objective is to get in front of the masses for free - and then turn that person into a monetary asset. The number one way that the NFL collects from the masses is in the advertising dollar that they can demand. The more people that view sports - the more advertisers have to pay to be able to advertise during games.

So along comes Tebow - he effects the numbers of educated NFL fans almost not at all - certainly not like Manning.

OTOH- thousands of home-educators who used to never watch football - have now become fans. Hundreds of thousands of Christian non-fans - previously disenfranchised by the decadence of players - have become fans. And the children of these folks are now watching as well. These new fans are not the type to be purchasing season tickets, or box seats, or buying very many jerseys. They are consumers who view advertising and result in higher viewership and therefore demand a higher advertising dollar for every commercial break. These folks are not likely to be a noisy bunch. They would not be recognized as Tebownites. They have quietly begun to watch football and are slowly getting football educated - becoming fans of a local team - because - there is a football player whose reputation gives them hope again that the NFL is not exclusively about drugs/sex/ and gambling, and the idiots in the NFL.

From 2008 - 2011 the TV contracts for the NFL have hovered around 2 billion per year. The rest of yearly income, of approximately 4 billion, for the NFL, comes predominantly from ticket sales. I can't find actual data figures and I assume that's because they haven't come out yet - but mark this: the number of fans is increasing now faster than it has ever done before.

I know you are going to ask the question - even if I am right and there is a dramatic increase in viewership - how can I attribute that to Tebow? Fair question.

As all my friends here well know - I travel in Christian circles and in home-education circles. I speak frequently concerning troubled children, rebellious teens, and discipline in the home, among other subjects. Three years ago - if I used a NFL illustration or spoke about being a football fan or spoke about any team, positive or negative, invariably, I would receive some backlash criticism. The reputation of the NFL was such that all fans were tainted by this negative view of the NFL within these circles. (I am speaking about extremely conservative folks.)
Now, everything has changed. Tebow illustrations are coming out of every pulpit and that backlash has ceased. Rather, these new 'fans' have started asking questions in an attempt to become football educated. It is common in a standard Sunday School class that people who used to know nothing about football, now express opinions and knowledge.
I know that my world is just a microcosm of the bigger picture and I am guessing at a great deal. But...by saying so I stimulate conversation on the blog and....my guess has more behind it than a lot of other folks have behind their guesses. LOL

i don't think that is the case by no means

but it comes across that way fyi

I'm not expecting a lot from our rookie class this season. This was a draft built for the future rather than the present. Unless Ty Warren gets cut which is likely since he's not budging on taking a pay cut, I don't see Wolfe starting. I see Warren and Bannon as the starters with Wolfe and Vickerson as the backups. And then Osweiler obviously won't be seeing playing time this year unless an injury to a certain player happens. Hillman I see as the 3rd string running back behind McGahee and Moreno, but considering McGahee is on the wrong side of 30 and Moreno has yet to prove he can stay healthy, theres a chance he can get a lot of touches. Then Bolden and trevathan and the other late round picks and undrafted guys are special teams and developing players.

LBF.. I have a new Nike jeresy (Von Miller) and I think it fits great!!! I like it way more than the Rebok ones... I have seen all the bad reviews for them and I just don't understand it. Bottom line is Nike puts out a way better product than Rebok...

OT, you shouldn't have to give a disclaimer. I shouldn't either. We feel the same way. Tim is a classy guy. I do think that he is trying too hard to be perfect right now (needs to remember that Jesus is the only perfect person). I'd like to see him make a few mistakes here and there because it shows he's human. But yeah... it's fair to both of them really. NY wants the publicity and Tim wants to help kids who are sick. Win-win I think. Tim's is a more noble cause of course.

And now for my full disclaimer:

I'm not a Tebow hater. I think he is a great human being, and I wish him the best. He may well become a great QB, only time will tell. But he is no longer a Denver Bronco, so he is no different in my mind than any other former Bronco.
