Broncos Add Defensive Quality Control Coach

May 29th, 2012 - 1:32pm by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos had an opening at defensive quality control coach after Wayne Nunnely retired and Jay Rodgers was promoted to defensive line coach.

The team has filled that position with the hiring of Cory Undlin, who joins the team after spending the last three seasons under Broncos Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio as Jacksonville’s defensive backs coach.

Undlin enters his ninth NFL season in 2012, having spent time with Jacksonville (2009-11), Cleveland (2005-08) and New England (2004). He also coached at Fresno State from 2002-03 and began his coaching career at his alma mater, California Lutheran (1992-2002).

During his time with the Jaguars, Undlin coached the defensive line and outside linebackers before working with the defensive backs in 2011. In Cleveland, he coached the defensive backs group that finished second in interceptions with 23 during the 2008 season. As a defensive assistant in New England, Undlin was a part the Super Bowl XXIX Championship team.

Undlin played defensive back from 1990-94 at California Lutheran, where he also earned a Master’s degree. A native of St. Cloud, Minn., Undlin and his wife, Amy, have three children – son Caden and daughters Brooke and Taylor.

Sounds like a good hiring for the D.

  2. OrangeTsunami says:

Considering we’re looking at a top 10 defense this year, it looks like this guy just walked into a massive pile of ____…. :P Only joking folks.. I do like that he has a Masters degree, as the theme of the day is SMART!!!!

  3. OrangeTsunami says:

Well, it turns out that Xanders had a Master’s degree as well… Lol. Anyway, joking aside, I think it’s a good hire considering there is a working relationship with JDR.

Btw, I’m counting the days until Wolfe takes the field… June 9th, correct??

  4. sndvl says:

What exactly are the responsibilities of a Defensive Quality Control Coach?

Welcome to Broncos Country Coach Undlin!

  5. alaskanbronco06 says:

OT yes the 9th I believe is correct.

    sndvl Im not exactly sure.

I like he had the Browns DBs 2nd with INTs. I hope our DBs can do that this year. For how the season went I felt we wernt getting enough INTs or FR but turning the ball over a lot.

  6. OrangeTsunami says:

Let’s start with this for his duties:

sndvl this is over a year old but does explain what the DQCC is/does

  8. OrangeTsunami says:

Here’s how we stacked up last year vs. the whole NFL in the turnover ratio. This needs to be addressed ASAP!!! Granted, our fumbles will go down w/o Tebow, but we need more take-a-ways, no doubt about it… GET IT DONE!!!!

  9. kpwojo says:

The Jack Del Rio signing was major though not a focus of press because of Tebow and Manning. JDL will turn this defense into one like we have not seen in years.

  10. OrangeTsunami says:

More INT’s is the easy place to look for more turnovers, but I’m looking for jarring the ball free from the QB’s hands as we CRUSH them to the ground!!! Wolfe led all college football DT’s in Forced Fumbles, and Trevathon led all college football LB’s in FF’s last season..

  11. MalikG says:

This hiring also quietly gives assistance to Jay Rodgers as defensive line coach. When you consider that Rodgers has never actually coached defensive line (although he has worked on the defensive side of the ball the last three years under the tutelage of Wayne Nunnelly), it makes a lot of sense.

Jack Del Rio is bringing in a guy who not only has helped coach defensive line, but did so under him in Jacksonville. Adding him to Del Rio himself (not to mention Coach John Fox) should make us feel much better about the state of the DL coaching after the departure of Nunnelly.

  12. OrangeTsunami says:

Good point Malik, I couldn’t agree more. I think our DL is going to surprise people this year, as I feel we have a bunch of guys who can play multiple spots, which is a good thing IMO

  13. Bronconasty says:

I hope Nate Irving can step up and me the starting MLB that we drafted him to be. Hopefully JDR can coach make him take the regins. Im not a fan of Joe Mays starting. We need Irving and Moore to have good seasons, as well as Julius Thomas

  14. MarshMelo15 says:

Orange Julius was dominante last year in training camp before he got injured. If he can stay healthy this season, I expect him to take over the starting roll over Tamme/Dressen!!! …. But I agree, Irving and Moore also need to step it up and be the players we drafted them to be…

  15. VegasBronco36 says:

The D is really going to be exciting this year a toltal blast to watch I cant wait to Von, Doom and Wolfe just dominate and bring the Orange Crush back in action :D

  16. MalikG says:

The entire linebacking crew is both the biggest question mark but also the most intriguing as far as what their upside and production will be this year. Both John Fox and Dennis Allen are defensive coordinators who were either former players in the secondary or started their career coaching those positions.

Jack Del Rio? He’s a former NFL linebacker, so you’ve got to think he evaluates that position differently just because of that. It’s telling that despite his addition as defensive coordinator that the team only added one linebacker in the draft, Danny Trevathan, and only in the final round. That and the fact that they resigned Joe Mays means that they feel good about the players they have.

Now, does that mean they think they’ll develop the players with better coaching and access to an offseason? It’s also telling that the linebacking crew is so young. Hopefully that means there is a lot of upside. The oldest LB is the oft-troubled DJ Williams, and he’s still on the right side of 30.

Here are the “named” (as in position) linebackers:

SLB – Von Miller (23), Mike Mohamed (24)
MLB – Joe Mays (26), Nate Irving (23)
WLB – DJ Williams (29), Wesley Woodyard (25)

alongside the rookies simply called “linebackers”: Trevathan (22), Johnson (24), Franklin (24), Coffey (22).

Personally, I like the idea of Denver being able to home-grow and develop players within their own system and coaches to produce for them the way that Pittsburgh has been able to so well. Woodyard is the best example of that kind of patience, but it’s possible that Mays and then Irving and Mohamed will be in the same mold.

(Final note — interesting that Cyril Obiozor is now listed as a DE at 6-4, 249)

  17. tlcat06 says:

    I like the hire. Makes sense because of the relationship with Del Rio. I just LOVE that we focus on the defense this off season. I mean I know that we got Peyton, but behind all that is the hiring of Del Rio and drafting some kids who seem to be solid. Tracy Porter is a huge bonus and Drayton is nice in there too. I honestly think that we can’t have too many CBs with the high power offenses right now. I’m good if everyone forgets about how dangerous our defense can be and focuses on stopping the offense… Which isn’t as easy as stopping the option! (-;

  18. tlcat06 says:

And I absolutely love that they were all golfing together today. What a fun bonding experience! LOL

  19. tlcat06 says:

That’s the wrong one! I can’t find the article that says he’s still leading sales!!!!

  20. louisianabroncofan says:

hey thats impossible cat. denver will not do as well monetarily without tebow, just ask daddybronc…..

  21. tlcat06 says:

LBF… Now nfl.com says its RGIII, then Peyton then Tebow, so I am absolutely confused! Either way, Peyton is leading Tim. LOL

  22. tlcat06 says:

Ok, so the Washington Post posts that RGIII is best seller and everyone else says Peyton is. As a Broncos fan, this irks me. LOL what is going on?

  23. OrangeTsunami says:

Revenues from jersey sales are shared equally among all NFL teams, as per the CBA revenue sharing structure, so DB needs to do some ‘splaining on how Tebow generates his team money, if they have a 30+ year waiting list for season tickets…. Lol

  24. tlcat06 says:

OT, did you see that’s the Colts still have 3000 season tickets unsold? That is unimaginable for Denver. We have such a long waiting list for season tickets, it’s ridiculous!

  25. OrangeTsunami says:

I think they are both technically right. RGIII has led jersey sales for the month of May, while Manning leads sales overall

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8296d074/article/robert-griffin-iii-leads-nfl-jersey-sales-in-may?module=HP11_content_stream

  26. tlcat06 says:

Oh ok, I’m blind. LOL! Thanks for helping me out. Yay! go Broncos!

  27. skillz_inc says:

cat you can tell your friend that obviously bronco fans will support PM just as much or even more than they did Tebow them sales are good to see

  28. louisianabroncofan says:

and deservedly so. he is the best at what he does and people should follow and like him. i am gonna get my manning jersey here very soon. i’m not quite sure what size to get tho. i”ve seen reviews saying they fit funny. i’m prob gonna go with a 48. rg3 tho? he hasnt done anything and i think he is very overrated. he’s lucky to have shanny as his coach cuz he will make him better more than most would. but he is something that the redskins fanbase needs. a young, athletic, smart guy with alot of potential. theyve been put through the ringer over there with personell and a lack of a quarterback for years.

  29. OrangeTsunami says:

I did not see that, but I’m not surprised. After last years pitiful display, and letting Manning just walk away for nothing, I’d be pissed too if I was an Indy season ticket holder…

I’ve said it here before, but it’s worth repeating – one of the main reasons why the NY Jets wanted Tebow was to sell tickets, or more precisely, sell the luxury suites in their new stadium, which generate MAJOR revenues. The Jets are owned by Woody Johnson (of Johnson & Johnson), and they share the stadium with the Giants, and have done poorly selling those suites, while the Giants have had no such problems. This was the main attraction to Tebow for the Jets, whether anyone here wants to admit ot or not, or whatever that fatso of a coach is told to say… Perhaps this is what DB was referring to?

  30. tebowgb2 says:

New Pass Rushing Defensive nick name, “Wolfe VonDoom” !!!!

  31. tlcat06 says:

LBF… they actually fit me perfectly. But that’s only because I am a girl and they actually made a nice women’s jersey. The reebok ones were so short and bothered me something fierce. It’s a bummer they can’t make them work for both of us!

Hey, I’m personally glad that Tebow is still #2. Because he actually has DONE something to warrent the position. RGIII hasn’t done anything yet. And who knows if he will be able to deal with the hype of that division. It’s a tough division!!

I think you’re right there OT. The Jets want to be the center of attention in NY. And it isn’t fair for Eli to be the third most talked about QB, but it’s hilarious that he can joke about it.

  32. OrangeTsunami says:

Can’t wait to see Wolfe on the field, the kid is an animal

  33. tlcat06 says:

Skillz, that makes me a proud Broncos fan. I’m impressed, actually. We’re good fans. Truly.

  34. tlcat06 says:

    Wolfe is my favorite rookie.

  35. OrangeTsunami says:

Cat – that’s the other reason, being the center of attention. I don’t blame them for that really, b/c the NY market is really tough. There are a ton of teams, there is always something going on, and if you don’t make a splash, you will be forgotten. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with it, but let’s just call it like it is folks.. And for anyone who believes otherwise is a tad bit naive IMO

  36. skillz_inc says:

    mine too cat

  37. OrangeTsunami says:

And now for my full disclaimer:

I’m not a Tebow hater. I think he is a great human being, and I wish him the best. He may well become a great QB, only time will tell. But he is no longer a Denver Bronco, so he is no different in my mind than any other former Bronco.

  38. tlcat06 says:

OT, you shouldn’t have to give a disclaimer. I shouldn’t either. We feel the same way. Tim is a classy guy. I do think that he is trying too hard to be perfect right now (needs to remember that Jesus is the only perfect person). I’d like to see him make a few mistakes here and there because it shows he’s human. But yeah… it’s fair to both of them really. NY wants the publicity and Tim wants to help kids who are sick. Win-win I think. Tim’s is a more noble cause of course.

  39. tlcat06 says:

Skillz, his video on this website right after he was drafted. It’s totally my favorite. He is dangerous!

  40. MarshMelo15 says:

LBF.. I have a new Nike jeresy (Von Miller) and I think it fits great!!! I like it way more than the Rebok ones… I have seen all the bad reviews for them and I just don’t understand it. Bottom line is Nike puts out a way better product than Rebok…

  41. Cdudbronc24 says:

I’m not expecting a lot from our rookie class this season. This was a draft built for the future rather than the present. Unless Ty Warren gets cut which is likely since he’s not budging on taking a pay cut, I don’t see Wolfe starting. I see Warren and Bannon as the starters with Wolfe and Vickerson as the backups. And then Osweiler obviously won’t be seeing playing time this year unless an injury to a certain player happens. Hillman I see as the 3rd string running back behind McGahee and Moreno, but considering McGahee is on the wrong side of 30 and Moreno has yet to prove he can stay healthy, theres a chance he can get a lot of touches. Then Bolden and trevathan and the other late round picks and undrafted guys are special teams and developing players.

  42. skillz_inc says:

    cat- he is wonderful

not trying to argue here but

you say only Jesus is perfect

then u say i would like to see Tebow make mistakes to show that he is human

well you already know that answer don’t you see line 3

so why oh why would you want to see him mess up?

    kinda silly imo

some people would say if you wish those things on another you aren’t happy with your own life

i don’t think that is the case by no means

but it comes across that way fyi

    you still my bud ;)

  43. DaddyBronc says:

So here’s the deal on Tebow and money for the NFL. I could care less about box seats or jersey sales. I care some about the total number of seats sold in a stadium and whether or not it is actually full or just full enough to allow local television coverage – those are very different stats.

The real money in sports comes from advertising. For years pro sports have evaluated how to collect the maximum dollar from fans and still have little kids watch and fall in love with the game – becoming the next generation of fans. Baseball almost bankrupted itself by getting out of primetime, and having most of their games played after a kids bedtime on weeknights. (I believe that has been addressed by MLB)

So the objective is to get in front of the masses for free – and then turn that person into a monetary asset. The number one way that the NFL collects from the masses is in the advertising dollar that they can demand. The more people that view sports – the more advertisers have to pay to be able to advertise during games.

So along comes Tebow – he effects the numbers of educated NFL fans almost not at all – certainly not like Manning.

OTOH- thousands of home-educators who used to never watch football – have now become fans. Hundreds of thousands of Christian non-fans – previously disenfranchised by the decadence of players – have become fans. And the children of these folks are now watching as well. These new fans are not the type to be purchasing season tickets, or box seats, or buying very many jerseys. They are consumers who view advertising and result in higher viewership and therefore demand a higher advertising dollar for every commercial break. These folks are not likely to be a noisy bunch. They would not be recognized as Tebownites. They have quietly begun to watch football and are slowly getting football educated – becoming fans of a local team – because – there is a football player whose reputation gives them hope again that the NFL is not exclusively about drugs/sex/ and gambling, and the idiots in the NFL.

From 2008 – 2011 the TV contracts for the NFL have hovered around 2 billion per year. The rest of yearly income, of approximately 4 billion, for the NFL, comes predominantly from ticket sales. I can’t find actual data figures and I assume that’s because they haven’t come out yet – but mark this: the number of fans is increasing now faster than it has ever done before.

I know you are going to ask the question – even if I am right and there is a dramatic increase in viewership – how can I attribute that to Tebow? Fair question.

As all my friends here well know – I travel in Christian circles and in home-education circles. I speak frequently concerning troubled children, rebellious teens, and discipline in the home, among other subjects. Three years ago – if I used a NFL illustration or spoke about being a football fan or spoke about any team, positive or negative, invariably, I would receive some backlash criticism. The reputation of the NFL was such that all fans were tainted by this negative view of the NFL within these circles. (I am speaking about extremely conservative folks.)
Now, everything has changed. Tebow illustrations are coming out of every pulpit and that backlash has ceased. Rather, these new ‘fans’ have started asking questions in an attempt to become football educated. It is common in a standard Sunday School class that people who used to know nothing about football, now express opinions and knowledge.
I know that my world is just a microcosm of the bigger picture and I am guessing at a great deal. But…by saying so I stimulate conversation on the blog and….my guess has more behind it than a lot of other folks have behind their guesses. LOL

  44. alaskanbronco06 says:

I just wanna say that today when I saw my nephews one is 5 the other 6(Both are Bronco fans and when my brother has them on Sundays they watch the games with me) I asked them who Tim Tebow is they said they former guy for Denver who cant throw but was supposed to be able to throw then I asked them who Peyton Manning is they said hes the guys whos supposed to throw and can actually for the Broncos now.

Lol Just thought id share that.

  45. tlcat06 says:

Skillz, I am not wishing harm on Tebow. But from what I’ve seen from people who try to be too perfect is that they fall, and they fall HARD. I’d rather him fall small than fall hard.

  46. tlcat06 says:

AB, that’s hilarious! From the mouth of babes!
