Brees: Good Situation for Orton

June 25th, 2009 - 3:06pm by Gray Caldwell

It’s not letting me embed this one in the site, but here’s a link to a video of Drew Brees talking about fellow former Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton.

Brees compares his situation — starting up again in New Orleans with a first-year head coach in 2006 — to Orton’s in Denver with Head Coach Josh McDaniels.

Manager of Media Information Patrick Smyth posted the link on his Twitter page, so if you haven’t seen it, check it out. For that matter, check out Vice President of Public Relations Jim Saccomano’s Twitter page, Public Relations Graduate Assistant Erich Schubert’s Twitter page, my Twitter page and the official Denver Broncos Twitter page.

Just a quick plug, but we do update them with Broncos news daily.

  2. bronco#80 says:

Orton gonna do great with the talent around him.

  3. florio's_mom says:

Cool! Drew is such a classy guy. I liked him even when he was on the Chargers. I’m happy we don’t have to play him two times a year. Now the chargers have that little girl Quaterbacking for them. Whats his name agan…………?

  4. bronco#80 says:

  5. broncofan2415 says:

Couldn’t get the video…but I hope Orton does well. BMarsh needs to stay in Denver for that to happen

  6. PJBroncofanFunk says:

LOL literally florio’s_mom!!!! Though it’s kinda anti-climatic, I was always waiting for a ‘defining moment’ if you will, for Jay to upstage him for good and somehow permanently retain the ‘top dog’ of the AFC West, and make him dread playing us…. But Kyle is better suited to do so :)

I agree, and in my research of Kyle, I see numerous factors that equate to those with Hall Of Fame status/ Super Bowl Rings. It’s hard to want summer to hurry up, but I do!

Thanks for the update and video link Gray! I have yet to join the ‘twitter nation’… It’s just like most technology, in a way it seems to drain the soul somehow…. I’m sure before the season starts, I’ll give it a shot…. Thanks again!

  7. bronco#80 says:

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels says Correll Buckhalter “just might be…our fastest back,” and praised Buckhalter’s “burst” and “long speed.”
Knowshon Moreno, LaMont Jordan, and Darius Walker aren’t burners, so this isn’t saying too much. But Denver could lean on Buckhalter as a speed pace change for Moreno. That, of course, is assuming Moreno is the starter.

This was said on Denver post.

  8. florio's_mom says:

Wow. Didn’t Bucky tear both ACLs in his legs? We must have some really slow RBs. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Big backs rule!

  9. Marshallman-15 says:

peyton hillis is our perfect example

  10. Orton_Backer81 says:

Has any1 thought of this, Kyle Orton put up good numbers in the “Windy City” and now he comes to the place with what is known as the “Thin Air Phenomenon”. I project Kyle orton to put up the numbers in Denver that Jay Cutler did. I also project Jay Cutler to have a complete meltdown in The Windy City. Jay Cutler is not a leader, Chicago has a third string wide receiver core and coach smith has done the least in the NFL with the most talent. Kyle Orton is a LEADER first and foremost - the FIELD GENERAL that will lead the troops to victory! Jay Cutler is a spoiled, ivy league pre maddonna! Which would you rather have?!? I want the leader everytime

Don’t mean to get off topic but just wanted to take a moment for the king of pop rest in peace……

  12. Deify_you says:

yes it is rather unfortunate that he took his life. RIP MJ.

  13. florio's_mom says:

He didn’t take his life he had a heart attack.

  14. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

did he die of a heart attack?

  15. royalbroncofan1 says:

A couple of former Purdue Boilermakers… Both Brees and Orton excelled running the Purdue spead offense. Coach McDaniels now has his man to be the point guard for our Team…. KO #8 !

  16. Deify_you says:

I’m pretty sure he over dozed on sleeping pills and went into cardiac arrest. But whatever what do I know.

  17. Deify_you says:

my bad dosed not dozed…well good night Broncos Country.

  18. Samoanbronco says:

good call babychamp! MJ changed the music industry and influenced a lot of current artists the likes Usher and Justin Timberlake just to name a few. The King Of Pop gone… my wife is devastated lol

Although the trade for Orton put a dent in my wedding day, I seriously think he will be the leader we need. With the best O-Line in the NFL and better running game all is looking good!!!

I am a little worried about Torain, I like this kid and I hope to high water he remains on the roster. His one decent outting against the CLE last season saw what this guy can do as long as he stays healthy. Fingers crossed ti works out.

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  19. Samoanbronco says:

Deify_you - Obviously your a doctor and you were the one that was called into revive him.

  20. broncochick1 says:

No offense to the Orton backer but he won’t put up Jay Cutler’s numbers of a year ago… But that’s okay we need a balanced attack to win and we can’t be playing from behind all the time. So don’t worry about Orton’s numbers compared to Cutler’s. We want to win. But I do agree Jay Cutler is headed for a melt down in Chi-Town. I will love ever second of it.

  21. Deify_you says:

So was anyone able to watch that video? I downloaded that Microsoft application and I got to the video part but the Brees’ interview would never load.

  22. whitebronco#1 says:

The best of MJ IMO was in ‘83, same year of the best QB generation that have seen the NFL (of course, Elway one of them!!!)

    KO will do great.

    Go Broncooos!

  23. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

i just watched peyton hillis highlights from last season and now im wondering why we need another back. this guy would have been a great HB he kind of reminds me of Marion Barber and at the same time he reminds me of Witten dont know why.

  24. royalbroncofan1 says:

Very sad day to see the king of pop Michael Jackson pass away… A legendary icon. The beautiful Farrah Farcett as well. May they both rest in peace…………

  25. Cdudbronc24 says:

    so how did MJ die….?

  26. broncofanlvnm says:

MJ will have an autopsy, from what I heard, to determine the cause of death.

  27. florio's_mom says:

I saw the video. Brees was just saying good stuff about orton. And MJ died from a heart attack, they don’t know if it was caused by drugs or something else. Ask Deify, he’s a doctor. LOL. Then he’ll tell you to drink Dr. Pepper real slow.

  28. TheRoyalBeast says:

Truly the King Of Pop. His reach extended beyond a nation to an entire planet. His is the greatest performer to ever grace a stage and he will be truly missed. R.I.P M.J

As for Orton, Im with Broncochick1. He won’t put up cutlers numbers from last year cuz last year we were too one sided, and lets face it he doesn’t have the natural born talent cutler has. But wat he does Have is a great supporting cast that can make any QB look good, from the Oline, to the receivers (hopefully bmarsh stays), to hopefully a better running game. He will do fine. and will shock a lot. All we need him to do is manage the game and I believe he is quite capable of that. Don’t expect his arm to bring us back from huge deficits tho.

    ORANGE CRUSH ALL DAY!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  29. Deify_you says:

Well I’m gonna get flamed again for this, but new reports are saying it WASNT sleeping pills as originally thought, but an overdose on Demerol which is very similar to the narcotic pain reliever Morphine. He was also taking Xanax and Zoloft. So whether it was an accidental or not is unknown.

  30. royalbroncofan1 says:

Drew Brees talks about his situation starting over in NO with a new coach a few years back. He compares that situation to Ortons fresh start with a new Coach and Team. A vote of confidence for Orton…..fellow alumni.

  31. florio's_mom says:

    Defiy,
Your right. Pain pills could also be the culprit. Wait a couple years and they’ll have a Biopic on HBO about him. I was pulling your leg about the doctor thing. But seriously if you tell me to drink Dr. Pepper slow, I will. (Because your a doctor) lol

  32. Deify_you says:

florio’s_mom I just noticed your second post about me, why the hate? Nah wait second thought I honestly don’t care its the internet. Your protected by your computer screen, plus honestly I’ve never cared about your attitude problem you’ve had, I actually don’t even read your post I just scanned and noticed my user name in it.

  33. florio's_mom says:

Defiy, What hate? I was just playing man. Oh, and wanting franchise players to remain on you team is having an attitude? Nobody hates anybody around here. I enjoy reading everyones posts, I don’t skip people because I think I’m better than them. Whatever. If you want to complain about it you can take the path of Dynamicdave.

  34. TheRoyalBeast says:

I havent been on the blogs in months and just recently came back. What happened to Monodono and elway07….Their posts entertained me lol.

    ORANGE CRUSH ALL DAY!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  35. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Drew Brees is classy. It’s too bad his replacement in San Diego, Queer Felipe is such a tard and whiny brat. Anyway, Brees once delivered a signed football to inmates at the Beaver Utah County Jail, which is about two hours away from my house. He didn’t have to do that but it just shows how great of a person he really is. If Drew Brees thinks Kyle Orton can do a good job for us then I’ll agree with the best quarterback in NFL history to ever have a birthmark. May we all exhibit Drew Brees’ class as we watch the Broncos stun the “experts!”

  36. Cdudbronc24 says:

deify_you, I think florios post wasn’t an attack. he was just joking around. we are all Bronco fans, we don’t need to argue about this. we agree to disagree.

  37. Cdudbronc24 says:

    In Brees we trust…

  38. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG??!?!?!?!

    Any who… 1st post all day…

Glad to hear Brees (An NFL QB) trust in Orton… So if a successful NFL QB believes in him, we should to…

Hope Orton does great for us obviously… if not, Hope Tommy B. can get things done in the future…

  39. trigger73 says:

    Drew is very nice.

  40. brian_schneider says:

Brees is the type that don’t get enough recognition. Not only for his accomplishments on the field but also as a person. He remains very classy and it is good to hear from a veteran like him that Orton has a very good oportunity. Not everyone in the league is like that, if you would ask Cutler a question about another QB like that, he’d be like “what..who..I don’t know who that is..how come you’re not talking about me.cuz it’s all about me..me..me..me..me, oh except for the bad throws they were dropped by my receivers.”

Michael Jackson, forever moonwalking in the sky..

  41. trigger73 says:

Drew Brees is a very successful QB… If he relates his QB situation with Kyle Orton, Kyle Orton could be as successful as Drew Brees. Drew Brees is very nice (as I said earlier)

  42. broncochick1 says:

I always liked Drew Brees. I have watched him since high school. He played for his dad in Texas and no schools in Texas recruited him because they thought he was too little. Then when he got to the NFL the Chargers decided they couldn’t win with him. The guy has always been put down and underrated. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and hopefully Orton can play with that same chip on his shoulder.

  43. 987654321 says:

I liked Drew Brees much better when he played for San Diego. We use to beat them consistently and we use to beat him to a pulp… ahhh good times! Images of John Lynch jack hammering him to the turf in San Diego are great memories!

  44. brian_schneider says:

I think that every QB we’ve had since John Elway has had to play with a chip on their shoulder. Just for the pure and simple fact that they weren’t John Elway. It’s really amazing how one moment can define how as fans we perceive the game and it’s players. For the longest time I had a problem with saying “he not John Elway,” as I’m sure a lot of us did. I think that Orton has a double chip on his shoulder. For one, “he’s not John Elway,” and two for some people..”he’s not Jay Cutler.” I hope Orton blasts the critics, and that chip on his shoulder will just be a speck of dirt to him.

  45. JJluvsdabroncos says:

Orton will be awesome this year….better than he’s ever been in Chicago. His numbers are going to blow Cutlers outta the water….just wait and see. Luv da boyz! Fan 4 life!!!!

  46. florio's_mom says:

I think orton will be above average, but not elite. Like some posters are saying. He might put up good numbers but not the same as Jay did. I don’t think jay is going to put up great numbers this year either. Both QBs need to adjust to their new team, new coach and new system. But who knows anyway? Orton could throw 4,500 yards or get injured in the first game a la tom brady. The past means nothing to us (Jay’s or Orton’s) The future is now and what is to come. Not what people “predict” it to be.

  47. broncochick1 says:

I don’t think Orton has a shot to throw for 4500 but that’s okay people. Hopefully the defense will keep us in games so we are not trying to force passing plays to catch up. let’s take leads and let Knowshon, Buckhalter and Hillis take control of games with their running abilities. Let’s win. Also what’s the point in throwing for 4500 yards if you can’t put the ball in the endzone like we did last year?

  48. babychamp-broncos^ says:

I believe in Orton he makes great decisions…he may not put up 300 or 400 yard games but i bet his touchdown ratio will be high…who knows his yardage just might be thru the roof…but i have faith in him and our D…im real excited im tryin to keep busy so the time will pass quicker like playing football with the fellas and things like….

11-5 best record afc west champs

  49. broncochick1 says:

I am hoping for better but I am guessing the Broncos will be 7-9 to 9-7 which will be a huge success with a new coach, new offensive and defensive scheme, new defensive coordinator and a new QB.

  50. bronco-blaze says:

well i would agree with the above posts, but honestly after seeing a team like the dolphans and falcons make it as far as they did with a new coach and qb **also the Ravens** i could see us in the play offs this year…Possibly wild card spot. I do hate the Chargers and Raiders more than anything but i respect the Chiefs. Sadly i see the Chargers owning us for atleast another year before we throw them back in the basement again.
