Bowlen Hands Fox Game Ball

September 18th, 2011 - 6:55pm by Gray Caldwell

Minutes after the Broncos pulled out a 24-22 win against the Cincinnati Bengals, Owner and CEO Pat Bowlen called up the team in the locker room.

Players took a knee as Bowlen awarded the game ball — kept after the team’s final kneel-down — to Head Coach John Fox for his first win.

You can check out the photo above — Fox holds the ball up, post-Gatorade shower.

Speaking of which, Brian Dawkins said the Gatorade dump almost didn’t happen.

“It almost slipped my mind for a split second, but I hustled over there to get him that,” he smiled. “He definitely deserved that. This was a tough, tough victory. A grind-it-out victory, and I’ll take it.”

    Bay,

I would have been furious to have lost money because of 1 stinkin point

  2. armadillo_orton says:

All this wins does is keep us from evaluating QUinn/Tebow and getting LUCK.. Orton still gets sacked (on a play when cincy was rushing 3) and fumbles the ball. Hurray!!!! Game ball for ORTON!! If was coach Lewis I would immediatley fire my lame defensive coordinator for being dumb enough to ever rush only 3 against Orton (& minus Lloyd and Royal).. Apparently this rocket scientist failed to watch any film.. So everyone is DOVE valley is so stoked cause we beat a lame cincy team.. Hurray!!! SO here is the bronco blueprint for success: Play a lame team with a brain dead defensive CO, and pray that Orton doesn’t blow the game… Great… hey let’s resign Orton to a 5 year contract!!! Our standards of success have fallen so far that now Bowlen gets excited for a HOME WIN against lame CINCY with a rookie QB to boot…. And the Denver SHEEPLE cheer blindly.. HURRAY!!!!!! Happy days are here again… WE GET 1 extra Orton START!!!!!! Man I for one am extremely excited about that…… This stinks… THANKS ELWAY

  3. broncosfreak30 says:

    Yea same with me sndvl…

I believe if Doom and Champ come back that we win by 7. If they’re not back then I think we either win by 3 or lose by 3. Either way, I will not make my prediction until later on Saturday probably! We desperately need Champ though!!! If we get Champ back, then we’ll automatically take Britt out of the game basically!

Also think we will be getting Lloyd back this game which will be huge for us as well!! Him and Decker should kill it! Let’s just hope that our main 3, Doom, Bailey, and Lloyd, are all out there on the field this coming Sunday!!! We just got done yesterday but I’m already ready for our next game!! Embarrass those Titans in their own home like we did last year!

Thing is, the Titans basically have all the same guys that we went up against last year. We have Doom back and have added Miller! Also we have Mays healthy and is starting as our MLB, who is beasting it by the way so they’ll have trouble I believe with some of our new personnel!!

I do have to say again though, Woodyard is not making DJ missed all that much! Woodyard and Mays both dominated that game yesterday!! Looks like our LB core will be great for years to come!!

Tebow will be starting the first game after the bye week.

  5. HardHitting27 says:

It’s too early to be talking about Luck, besides he could be just a bust. Great college QB and sucks in the NFL, or he rides the pine with no real chance to show if he can make it. So I say forget about Luck.

As far as Orton goes, and I wish he would, he is still the same old QB. Doesn’t seem to improve or show that he learns anything from watching film of the game. Holding the ball too long, staying in the pocket too long, locking on to one reciever (this weekend understandable since we were down to 2 and you knew he wouldn’t throw to Tebow).
Sure he can manage the game and for the most part makes good THROWING decisions but he still is an overrated QB. He’s the only QB that can play to lose and still no heart no passion. Anyone see Dalton firing up the team on the sidelines? Where’s that from Orton? Orton=Eeyore

  6. 1nOnlyTRB says:

True freak but woodyard aint look too good against raiders. Whole team didn’t actually which leads me to 2 conclusions about this team.

Either we are not as bad as we played against the raiders … Or the Bengals are worse than we played against the raiders (im leabing towards the latter). Cuz that turnaround was too quick. But ill take the W … especially with our major talents on the team all out of commission — TRB

  7. armadillo_orton says:

Wow I feel like I am in a time machine from like 3 years ago and in Detriot.. I mean getting excited after beating CINCY at home (with a rookie QB). REALLY??? Has everyone lost their minds? This is like getting excited when you pick up the narly girl at the bar at 1:50am. I expect and demand more. I think our team could be alot better with just a few coaching tweaks. But the sheeple cheer HURRAY!!!!!! Give me a freaking break… This win hurts our team more than it helps us.. PERIOD.. DO any of you get it??? How does this help us for the future? All we have learned after these 2 games is that Orton still stinks unless the defense is dumb enough to go away from the moderate pass rush. I feel like I’m in the twilight zone.. I feel like I’m in Tampa back in the 80′s when they cheered wildly over every stinking WIN. We are following the TAMPA blueprint from the 80′s. They hired Fox like coaches (and they penny pinched like our boy Ellis is doing) and they failed to have any direction. WHY WAS THIS WIN BIG???? Life is too short for us to have to suffer from more Orton starts… I can’t wait to read the posts next week after we get punked by TENN and we are 1-2..

  8. WieminCA says:

    And that makes you happy???

  9. armadillo_orton says:

HEY FOX where’s you game ball for the CINCY defensive cooridinator? Are you also going to give the kids drinks, candy, and oranges after the win as well? I would never be stoked after squeaking by CINCY at home. FOX your still spineless as all the folks in Carolina know.. Thanks for making us Carolina WEST.. RIGHT ON!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!! WE ARE BELOW AVERAGE!!!! HURRAY!!!!!!! GAME BALLS FOR ALL!!!!!! MILK AND COOKIES ON ME!!!!

  10. 1nOnlyTRB says:

You are gonna give yourself a heart attack Ammadillo Orton. No one said the win was big. But at the end of the day it was a win. And you would have to be a pretty salty fan to only see the downside during a win … and believe me … there was a lot of down. All it means is we are not the worst in the league. And all it does is make the powers at be think they were right for starting Orton. I don’t agree, many don’t but it seems like we will all just have to wait out fox. And we could have easily lost if Marvin Lewis had gone for the FG instead of for the play. It was only about 54 yards in Denvers altitude. All I got from this game is that unlike the game against the raiders … when the team pretty much gave us the game again, this time we won. TRB

  11. oldsouthstander says:

Like Coop said, a lot of baby steps. As expected a young team looked discombubulated and at times looked like SB Champs at other times. That’s the way this year will be. There were a lot more bright spots than ugly. For those saying, yah, but it was the Bungles, remember the Bronco STARTED the game short SIX starters and the number got worse as the game progressed. It was good to see the second stringers step up and perform well.

    OFFENSE
QB: A- Yes, Orton fumbled, but that’s because Cladsy was having one of the worst games he’s ever played.
RB: A+ Both backs looked good. Lots of yardage from second effort.
WR: A- Fumble by Decker was the only negative. Hat’s off to Tebow for stepping up and saying I’ll do whatever I can to contribute.
OL: B- Clady sucked, 2 costly penalties and a whiff causing a fumble by Orton.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A- GGGAAAAHHH!!! What a time for a rookie mistake!!!! Bet he’ll never do that again. Decker looking good on punt returns.

    DEFENSE
DL: B- They really missed Doom, but still did quite well. Definite improvement on run defense.
LB: B+ Nice to see Mays staying in his gap position more effectively. He sure is a hard hitter.
SECONDARY: B Good coverage except for the long pass gain. Perfect offensive call for the defense the Broncos were in.

  12. brian_schneider says:

armadillo_orton: What exactly are you wanting from the Broncos? Tebow to start or the firing of Fox, Elway and Xanders? I’m a little confused are you mad at Orton or the coaching staff? I’m just wondering I mean a win is a win no matter how you get it and while we’re still not playing at a high level a win sure helps the moral of the team.

  13. armadillo_orton says:

As I said before What is to be gained from starting ORTON???? WHAT????
He looks worse than MCCOY. NEWTON, Dalton, the jax kid….. Watching Orton play football is making me physically sick. And watching people accept and cheer for this loser is insane….

  14. HardHitting27 says:

An A for the QB? Really? Regardless of the fact that he’s staying in the pocket too long, locking on to one receiver still, short arming passes and the usual stuff?

Wow, if that’s a A start, what grade does he get when he shores up those shortcomings? is there something higher than A?

At best Orton, still gets a C. As in C ya later!!!!

  15. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Wow a lot of negativity today. I was at the game yesterday and Shannon Sharpe’s ceremony brought me to tears. I was again brought to tears as I got to experience my first live Broncos win walking down the ramp. That being said our team has A LOT to work on, discipline being at the top of that list. Still for the last two plays of the game we finally showed that we can do what it takes to win when the situation is most critical and we did it with a depleted roster. I think we will be a better team in November than we are right now, and really that is all I can ask/hope for. GO BRONCOS!

  16. brian_schneider says:

Apparently winning doesn’t cure everything LOL!

  17. HardHitting27 says:

I’m only negative towards the one and only Eeyore(Orton).
I’m all about the Broncos and this is the best franchise in the NFL. And once we get rid of Orton, it’ll be even better.
I don’t care how many wins he can potentially get us, it’s all about his game. He’s pedestrian at best and is not the type of QB to lead this team or any for that matter to the Superbowl. I’m not saying Tebow or Quinn are better, but we’ll never know as long as Orton is here and starting.

I am glad for the win and wish for many more.

    Go Broncos!!!

  18. millertime2 says:

They have all ready said in 2012 we will be wearing the Orange jersey at Home games. All their doing now is getting rid of all the blue Inventory rt now, and manufacturing the orange jerseys. They said that along time ago.

  19. killerkod says:

I know we all have an opinion……and we’re free to express it here on the blog…..

but come on armadillo……you come on here everyday screaming the same old BS and it’s getting old. No matter what the topic of conversation is, you inject the same old hate every time.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s getting old man……

  20. brian_schneider says:

He reminds me of myself on the game blogs last season.

  21. true2broncos says:

    armadillo_orton,

    Your an ANGRY ELF!!! LOL

I think we all know that this win is not a HUGE one by any stretch, but look who we did it without:

    Champ Bailey – out
    DOOM – out
    Moreno – out
    Lloyd – out
    DJ Williams – out

over half of our salray cap was sitting this game out and WE STILL GOT THE WIN!!!

I’d say that was a GREAT JOB by the TEAM and by the Coaching Staff!!!

Not too mention did you see the effort from Cassius Vaughn running down and stopping a possible TD by the other team. Sure he had had a penatly later in the game but all I saw was a GREAT EFFORT by an UNDRAFTED COLLEGE FREE AGENT!!!

Seriously everyone knows things aren’t perfect in Denver and at some point I’d like to know what we have in TEBOW, but let’s see what we can do as a team first in the AFC WEST – that is all we have to win as far as I’m concerned this season!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!! 8)

  22. strandoftds says:

Orton is just an average run of the mill QB. At best he can only get a team to 8-8 year in and year out with his mediocrity. If he gets to the playoffs somehow, that first playoff game is a loss. Kyle Orton is very average and thats it.

  23. Orange_Crusher says:

    GOOD JOB BRONCOS!!!

Wow! I guess Willis McGahee really was rested and ready to tear it up! Right on McGahee! Way to go! I hope he can keep it up all season cause I could really get used to seeing more hardnose running like that!

Almost looked like the back up players are better than the starters??.. Nice job to our backup guys stepping it up!

My game ball goes to Eric Decker!!!

Too bad for Eddiel Royal..Seems like we are having too many hammy/groin problems… Maybe we are not stretching the guys enough.. Tuten needs to teach the team that “stretching is resting”…. Maybe they will stretch more..

FEELS GOOD TO GET A WIN!!! ORTON GETS A C+

    STRETCH’EM TOOTEN!!!!!

    ILMSDB!!!!

  24. HardHitting27 says:

    It is a TEAM effort.
And here’s to hoping the whole TEAM is back on the field next sunday vs the Titans. I for one want to see what Doom, Ayers and Miller can do to rattle Hasselback. And with Champ back that’ll help.

Do we have another WR on the practice squad to step up to fill in for Royal? I think he’s going to be out a while.
While I’d like to see Tebow fill in again, I’d much rather see him play QB.
I thought we did have one on the practice squad.

  25. strandoftds says:

We have 2 WR`s on the PS, Eron Riley and D`Andre Goodwin.

  26. millertime2 says:

Im with you KillerRod, man can that guy let us enjoy a win. Armadillo once they put another qb in their, your going to say the same old stuff when he doesnt perform. I personally think your just a very negative person about life period, your cup seems like its allways half empty, dude have alittle positive to yourself, can you say anything about Deckers performance, or MaGahees performance or how well the defense looked. C MON MAM give us a break for ONE DAY PLEASE!

  27. strandoftds says:

Just now posted in the Denver Post. Eddie Royal out 2-4 weeks with a strained groin and Julius Thomas out 2 weeks with a high ankle sprain.

  28. brian_schneider says:

One thing I’d like to see is getting more turnovers on defense.

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Glad to see a couple folks coming around about DJ today and last night, anyone who doesn’t give it 100% during the season including the off season is not worthy in my book and DJ not on the team is actually a breath of fresh air, we have leadership at LBs with Miller now while DJ could never provide any, just glad to see that when he will serve his most certain to be suspension for his second DUI he won’t be missed as much as some say he is. I don’t miss him at all.

  30. strandoftds says:

Kudos to Decker, Miller and Wilhite on the performances yeserday against the Bengals. Mays and Woodyard stepped up, good for them as well.

  31. brian_schneider says:

So is DJ off the roster?

  32. strandoftds says:

    Spelling ; Theirs and yesterday.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

Exactly what I expected about both Royal and Thomas injuries as stated this morning. Thomas won’t be a big deal long run but Royal will be missing a month and he will probably never be right again, just like Moreno, these glass figurines including Demaryius all need to take on another job, like kicker maybe, well no, kickers can pull groins and hammies too, just water boy then, well no you can pull stuff carrying water, well in PR maybe.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

No DJ is on the roster but hurt. He’ll be back.

  35. strandoftds says:

No, just on the injury report. I wonder when his suspension will go down and for how many games?

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Obviously meant DJ not on the team playing.

  37. baylinorcrush says:

    Who cares? Frankly I don’t.

  38. strandoftds says:

DJ might not be suspended sense his DUI happened during the lockout.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

Broncos Born & Raised, one negative nancy blogger this morning hardly adds up to “Wow a lot of negativity today” as you posted, just saying, I think the majority here have congratulated the team and rightly so but also are not worry free about the rest of the season either.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

His DUI happened during last season if my memory serves me right and yours wrong.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, November 2010, but good try, hahaha.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Talk about thinking half way full glass….

  43. true2broncos says:

DJ Williams is a GREAT LB in my book – the off the field stuff really doesn’t matter much to me. He can afford to have someone else drive him to work.

I miss the TACKLING MACHINE!!! He’s had the most tackle the past few years if I’m not mistaken?!?!

  44. strandoftds says:

So he deserves to get a suspension. His 2nd offense is probably 4 to 6 games.

  45. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I’m happy to pull out that win albeit it was a lowly Cincy team, with a rookie QB as our opponent. The thing I think the team and coaches should take from this is progress, nothing more. To laud Coach Fox or give him an overwhelming sense of accomplishment would be more of a detriment than anything. Of course I think the team should enjoy the victory but not so much as to start kowtowing to Orton.

Actually, with the way we played I would prefer seeing quotes from Fox on how to build upon this victory and how we’re getting right back to work rather than the ‘Gatorade Bath’ pictures. I compare the Gatorade Bath picture to a WR scoring a TD and over-enthusisticly dancing in the end-zone when the game is a near blowout. We are still a team rebuilding and to get back to the respected franchise we once were we need to stay focused with a ’tunnel vision’ mentality and a true committed work ethic. So, score the TD hand the ball to the ref and get ready for the onside kick.

    -Royalty

  46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Im with you on that true…

And yes it was during last season, while McD was still the coach. Thats when his captaincy was revoked. Prior to that he hasn’t really had any issues. I think his first and last one was a DUI 3 years before the DUI last year or something like that. Def could be alot worse in this league.

Goodell is one to lay the hammer down quick, if he hasn’t by now, I doubt he will. TRB

  47. strandoftds says:

His off the field decisions are uncalled for, not a very wise dude. First time learn from your mistake, 2nd time is FOOLISH INDEED!

  48. baylinorcrush says:

Like I always say, when you don’t have a Dline that tackles the run it’s easy to get the tackles at LB, look at Woodyard yesterday, 13 tackles, that’s about what DJ used to get on his best days, he is WAY overrated in my book, could be great if he applied himself to the job 100% but we all know from his track record during the off season and getting DUIs mid season that he does not, But like TRB says just one opinion amongst many, but glad to see other bloggers coming around about him like I said earlier.

  49. broncofan9137 says:

I agree with Bay. Bronco players can’t walk without getting hurt. I think glass is tougher than some of players we have. Every year they’re hurt. Who wants abunch of players that get hurt all the time. They should trade them or send them on their way. We probably won’t get much if we trade them. I think they put Tebow in the game just to shut the fans up, well it didn’t work Fox the fans are alot smarter than you think.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

Goodell hasn’t laid the hammer simply because it hasn’t gone to court yet, innocent til proven guilty, that’s all.
