To Head Coach Josh McDaniels, the best cornerbacks in the game are ones who can juggle two simultaneous tasks.
In his mind, becoming a great interceptor requires spotting when the quarterback releases the ball, while following the covered receiver on his route progression.
One of the players who most helped McDaniels recognize that skill is his current corner — Champ Bailey.
“If you can’t see the quarterback, sometimes it doesn’t matter how well you are covering because you don’t know when the ball is coming,” McDaniels said. “But he has that ability to do both. I have a great appreciation for it now that I am here.”
For the fourth time in Bailey’s six seasons with the Broncos, his team enters week 10 with six wins to its credit. After consecutive losses to Baltimore and Pittsburgh, Bailey has taken away one of McDaniels’ key points to get back on a winning track.
“Just doing your job,” Bailey said. “Plain and simple. It’s just as simple as that. You just get out there and do what you’re supposed to do and things will work out.”
This season, Bailey said his job has involved more press coverage than in recent years. The Broncos secondary has already squared off against the likes of Chad Ochocinco, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Vincent Jackson, Santonio Holmes, and Hines Ward.
The task gets no easier this weekend in Washington, with Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El next on Denver’s radar.
McDaniels said facing talented receivers of that nature prompts a defense to be more disruptive at the line of scrimmage. As for Bailey’s role in that disruption, he said the 11-year veteran has the ability to do whatever a coach asks of him.
“He’s always been a dependable player,” McDaniels said. “He’s always been a guy that’s accepted whatever challenge that you may give him each week. I think the more of those guys you have, the better chance you’ve got to win.”
INJURY UPDATE
There were no changes to the Broncos’ Week 10 Injury Report on Friday. On the Redskins’ side, after not participating in either Wednesday or Thursday’s practice, RB Ladell Betts (ankle) was a limited participant on Friday. He is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at FedEx Field.
A non-participant in Thursday’s session, P Hunter Smith (right groin) was a limited participant on Friday. He is also listed as questionable.
Here are some photos from the start of Friday’s practice.

anyone know when dj williams contract is up???
Yeah, don’t confuse me you guys, this is Brandon’s final year of his 4 year contract, he will be a free agent in 2010.
IMO, I think if we can get going on offense this week we got a good chance of winning, even though the Deadskins have a damn good defense,we got a damn great defense, and while our offense is lacking right now, their offense is weak, although they are good at wr if our D gives them time to throw.I see our D getting 5 or 6 sacks, and maybe a pick or 2 Sunday.GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DJ signed a five year extension in 2008.
ok…and dj’s??? we need to resign brandon so bad.
ok thanks bro
Seriously,we need to sign Marshall long term, like him or not, when his heads on straight, there’s not a better wr in the game.IMO
BFE92, I thought we would lose the last two, but I am thinking we will win this one. I mean to be anywhere we want to be, we have to start by winning the ones we are supposed to. This is one of them. I’ll predict the score tomorrow.
Whatta you guys think about our LBS????I think Doom is one of the best pass rushing LBS we’ve had since Fletcher,DJ is good inside, and Davis has been doing good,Ayers is coming along pretty good, and Haggan ain’t bad either.
I done said 23-6 and I’m stickin’ with it damnit,I don’t care if I have got a BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.LOL
I think the fact that Bowlen said Marshall would receive a substantial pay raise in a new contract is a great sign. The only problem I see is him growing restless with Orton’s lack of long game passes and wanting to go somewhere he might get more yards so he can go to the pro bowl again, like in Chicago.
i think our linebackers are just pain solid. period, and doom is a beast in himself, there isn’t anyone with his ability, #92 for pittsburg, but man we got some awesome linebackers
6-2 is pretty good if we can finish 5-3 we can be 11-5, better than we’ve been in years.
u guys think we can get knowson as the next td?
I like our LB’s, specially Davis and Doom. DJ is great but he lacks a little in leadership at that position. Ayers can pick up a ball and run like the wind, so I guess that’s good, seriously I think he will be very good. Haggan is ok, nothing special.
Fletcher has the club record with 16 sacks in 1 season,I think Doom will break that, but what’s the NFL record???? I think last year that guy from Dallas had 20 is that the NFL record???if so Doom has a shot at that too,we still play KC 2 more times, and SD,I think he had 2 on them.Doom has 10.5
There is no way you can even entertain that Moreno will be the next TD at this point, just to even discuss it would be an insult to TD, IMO. It’s pretty much the same as if you asked if Orton can be the next Elway…
Knowshon Moreno has still got a lot to prove to even be mentioned in the same sentence as TD,both from Georgia Moreno a #1 pick, and TD a #6 pick, crazy ain’t it????????
I think it’s 22 or 23.
We had a helluva Oline blocking for TD.And we had Elway stretching the defenses.
I couldn’t of been any closer, it’s 22 and a half, by Strahan in 2002.
ya i aggree…kinda cool watching him play i never got to see td so.
Even if he breaks Simon Fletcher’s record of 16, that’s saying a Helluva lot for DOOM.
Never got to see TD,my man you missed out on that shi? he would’ve been the greatest of all time,if he hadn’t retired.IMO
Yeah, that’s a tough record to beat, the old one was held by Babineau with the Jets (22), many, many moons ago.
too young man all i have is the super bowl vids lol
I guess McD not gonna use a fullback this year (hillis),sad, waste of talent if you ask me,he likes to use (hybrid) back as he calls them,TE’s all they are.
BFE92, don’t confuse the young man, Davis didn’t retire, he was forced out of football due to a knee injury, a freak one too, it looked like nothing, he walked it off and everything but it turned out it was the beginning of the end of a short 4 year career.
I still have the superbowl vids I might pull’em out and watch’em if we don’t go all the way this year,LOL
Yeah,sad story,best back we ever had.IMO
He was the 2nd fastest back in history to get 6000 yards,if I’m not mistaken.
floyd little was good tho huh?
I think you’re wrong about Hillis, remember two weeks ago in the Ravens game he was finally used on O and caught two passes and last week his grand ma died and had to attend the funeral, so I think McD might surprise you still by using him much more than you think before season end, maybe not much as a fullback, but as a back running and receiving, that’s my opinion.
I think you’re right,Just use him somewhere though ,he’s got talent.
I didn’t get to see the Ravens game.
Floyd Little was our first round pick in 1967 out of Syracuse. He was the best back other than Davis and also Otis Armstrong, Sammy Winder and Gerald Willhite had their moments.
Well guys, I think the history class is over for tonight. LOL. I’m out, goodnight.
And Steve Sewell,remember him???????
see i need u older guys to keep me educated man! lol just messin
hahaha yes history of the best team ever
And Bobby Humphrey,Good Night Friend.
I still got cold beer,I ain’t goin nowhere.LOL
haha beer
Hey it’s good for you.LOL
sometimes right
yup
GOODNIGHT AND GODBLESS
Dang, I need a few of you guys with me down here in DC! There are nothing but Redskin fans all over the place but have bumped in to some of my fellow bronco fans!! I’ll represent our team out there and show that we are a team to be feared!!
GOOO BBBRRROOONNNCCCOOOSSS!!
Hey I’m from the east just not quite that far,you must be close to TRB.LOL
It’s early Saturday morning, just thinking about our beloved Broncos, hope they play proud with their heads up Sunday, win or lose we’re proud of them, from East to West,North to South, they are loved everywhere.
