Barrett Signed to Active Roster

November 22nd, 2008 - 2:13pm by Gray Caldwell

On his 24th birthday, rookie Josh Barrett has been signed to the Broncos active roster.

Not a bad birthday present.

The safety spent the first 11 weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad. Selected by the team in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft from Arizona State University, Barrett saw time in all four preseason games for Denver and ranked fourth on the club with 11 defensive tackles while adding two special-teams stops.

A two-year starter at Arizona State, Barrett played 47 career games with 27 starts for the Sun Devils and totaled 174 tackles, six interceptions, 17 pass breakups and four fumble recoveries. He received honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors as a junior in 2006.

To make room for the Barrett transaction, the team also waived running back Alex Haynes on Saturday.

This is awesome! This club has a very very bright future with our youth playing and some playing very well! Isn’t it funny how are defense improved once our vets went down? Is it coincident or better players are on the field now?

I guess my point is the Broncos should start Barrett.

Looks like wishes do come true. Hope to see him play this week, even if it is on special teams. If he plays like the rest of our rookies have, i’ll be a very happy person. I just hope most of you guys don’t start talking bad about this guy if he was one bad game……like most tend to do.

Good news, always wanted barrett to be signed.

Also, waving alex haynes makes sense. He wasnt gonna have any impact with us bringing in Tatum and with selvin coming back

  14. xlilmixedup33x says:

its about time now show us what u got kid, we need someone to replace lowery lol

  15. 07elway says:

Long overdue but he will have to prove himself… no doubt about it. He deserves a chance like everyone else so give him that benefit of the doubt. If Shanahan can give this guy a chance, as fans so can we. And to further stress that… now if he has somewhat of a bad game that doesn’t mean he’s total and complete lost cause. Just imagine him being Eddie Royal of our defense. I know that quite the comparison but just hold on… what if Royal had had a bad first game and we gave up on him right there and we would’ve missed what he’s done for us the rest of this season. His first game was his best so far but what if hadn’t been and we gave up on him. That would have been a huge mistake to give on such big talent. So we don’t know what Barrett is going to do he might just be the answer to help our defense. Give him the time of day to prove himself. We can’t see him in one game and just assume that’s how he’ll play football for the rest of his life, it doesn’t work like that. People make mistakes but the key to that is to learn from them and correct what we’ve done wrong. As far as giving him a chance that’s where he deserves it the most – the chance to prove himself after he’s made a mistake. The chance to prove he’s able to fix his mistakes and be a better football player.

We’ve only seen him in action in the pre-season so again just give him the time of day to prove himself. If it were you in his place, wouldn’t you want at least one chance to prove yourself? I think you would.

Can’t wait to see our Orange & Blue crush the Raiders!!!
I’m so excited – go get ‘em boys!!!!!!!!

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

I just want to say good luck, give some good licks and stay healthy. This years rookies have been awesome, so come and show everyone why you were drafted with this group. Good luck, god bless and have fun. GO BRONCOS!!!

  17. archangel77 says:

This is fantastic news. One of the reasons I think Denver’s Defense has performed as well as it has is the fact that there is very little film on our rookie players. Those that have been added recently have had a great impact on the mentality of this team. Not only are they playing from a position where they have not been told what is impossible or what isn’t, but the win against the Browns and the Falcons showed them something that can only be learned on the field during a regular season game and that is the fact that no matter what the score, if you never give up and continue to give it your all; your going to win more games than you lose. With Barrett being signed the Broncos D has a safety that was not only hitting like a lightning strike during the preseason but has legitimate 4.34 speed. He is one of the few players that I saw during the draft whose speed translated to the field. The other player wears number 19 on offense. Even if he does not start, and I believe he might; I am sure that he will see a significant amount of playing time on passing downs and on special teams. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but I am willing to go out on a limb, and it is a short one at that, and say that the Broncos had the best draft on any team last year. You have the offensive rookie of the year in Eddie Royal, the hardest hitting running back in the league in Payton Hillis, and the best rookie LT to hit the league since Orlando Pace and Johnathan Ogden. On defense, special teams, and offense Spencer Larsen has proved to be a fantastic all around football player. Williams is showing a great amount of potential at CB as is Bell. The infusion of Larsen and Woodyard to the LB corps has resulted in players that are flying to the ball and making tackles. With Barrett being added to the mix, this defense is going to be what we all hoped it would be at the beginning of the season, Dynamic! Yes there are going to be rookie mistakes but one thing has become perfectly clear; when Denver went to the draft last April and invited the free agents who were not drafted they were looking for one type of athlete. Football players. No matter their speed, strength, or agility these guys are football players and they are changing the face of our fantastic Denver Broncos for the better. Listen to your coaches, the veterans, and believe in yourselves but most of all know that we, the fans, are all behind you. Give em’ hell and show the silver and black how a team really plays football.

  18. Mest1zo says:

Dang Ive been waiting for this for a while. We need that speed and hitting ability on safety. I dont know how this didnt happen sooner with the play of our starters…

  23. KMB says:

A prayer answered !!!! I’ll admit is was very hard to watch our “D” play like they had been but these past 2 games have had improvement….hopefully we will continue that improvement with our young talent and now with Barrett at least until we get our starters healthy. Let’s finish the rest of the season strong. GO BRONCOS!!!

  29. ddk broncos fan says:

finally i have been waiting all season for josh i hope to see him progress like the other rookies we have lets make the class of 08 the best draft class in nfl history go royal, clady, spencer, prater, barrett, and hillis lets add to this already talanted team

  30. Gami3it says:

I personally think Barret should have always been activated, would have come in handy when the safeties went down. About damn time. Alot have been calling for your name man, don’t disappoint us. Like all the rookies and everyone on our team, Wish you nothing but good luck and think you got the skills to be the next john lynch, polamalu or dare I even say Josh Barrett? lol

Did well in college and in preseason, lets see you play first in reg season before we start talking about starting :-) . GO BRONCOS

  31. broncos20 says:

very excited to see him out there…no one dare mess wiht our pack of rooks….
this kid is another hybrid..adrian wilson (tall-bighitter) + ed reed (speedy-ballhawk)…like a bobsanders/polomalu..only thing is,,he is taller than both polomalu and sanders….which is a BIG PLUS!!all he needs is more experience and polish of his game..

  32. 1ArabianKnight says:

    OK Kid,

LIGHTS, CAMERA’S ……CHEERLEADERS, SCREAMING FANS, ….STADIUM PRESENCE, ….AND TEAMS THAT THINK WE’RE JUST LUCKY, …MEDIA THAT LOOKS TO SLAM YOUR FAILURES AND GLOAT YOUR SUCCESSES IN ONE BREATH,……

It now comes down to this…..ARE YOU THE ONE?
Are you the ‘prophecied safety’ returned to us in the “manner of ATWATER, and LYNCH”???

Will YOU Make a Name for yourself or Allow Media to Conclude its perpetuation of your performance………

YES, make no mistake about it……YOU WERE DRAFTED LAST,…..BUT YOU ARE THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH!! TAKE HOLD OF YOUR DESTINY KID….
    and FULFILL IT!

    Prove Us ALL WRONG……..me included!

“BRING BACK THE EYE OF TIGER”, JOSH. BRING BACK our Safety PRESENCE, BRING BACK THE CRUSH………………………………
    BUT ABOVE ALL…………………………………..BRING IT!!!!!!

  33. 1ArabianKnight says:

    I agree with Royalbroncofan1,

Drop Lowry. If Barret gets anything close to 3-5 takles, 1TFL, a PDF, or a FF, Drop Lowry like its hot and re-sign Martinez!

  34. lynch4prez says:

im not sold.. there has to be a reason he didnt get activated til this week.. attitude, lack of committment, slow learning curve.. something.. he’s got a lot to prove before you start saying stuff like next lynch

  35. Colorado69 says:

I’m looking forward to watching him play. He has the physical side, but must learn the mental side. He will make some mistakes, but can be at least as effective as the present safeties. Possibly another rookie starter from this amazing class. The future is looking good. Go Broncos!!!!!!

  36. egybronco says:

he better be worth the hype

    is champ playing tonight

  37. Markymarkuss777 says:

I wonder how he will do. I’ve been seeing a lot of comments on this message board about starting Barrett, and now it’s finally happening. We have an amazing amount of talent. If Champ Bailey comes back in this week too, I think we’ll have the complete package!

  38. ohiobroncosfan43 says:

    about time

  39. gridironprince says:

“We had CRUNCH 27, then we had CRUNCH 47, and now we have CRUNCH 36, let’s Rock’n'Roll Josh and knock those sucker’s out!!!”

Oh and Happy Birthday to ya!!!

  40. del30 says:

    one word………………………..PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. bucknbronco says:

Nobody got hurt (that I know of anyway), and maybe Bailey will be healthy and help our defensive out with his presence in the huddle when we play the Jets. We’re still two games up, so we can’t give up. Nobody’s been saying anything good about the AFC West all year, on TV and around. Even when we’ve had a big game, they always chalk it up to something bogus. Maybe I just need to hang around cooler people? Probably…But anyway, our offense and defense have had some pretty impressive displays at times, but we need to put that all together and make it happen in a timely fashion…how about within 60 minutes…on the same day…on GAMEDAY. We’ve had some good breaks go our way this season, some controversial. With how the Chargers winning account has recently “run out of credit” this year, we need to take this Division, whether we go far in the Playoffs, or not. You all know anything can happen in the Playoffs, it’s far-fetched, but it’s true. We just need to get there. GO BRONCOS!

  42. broncomike83 says:

Not sure if this is the answer to a PATHETIC display of football yearterday, but its a start i guess….

  43. brian_schneider says:

I look forward to seeing what he can do. The region where I live did not broadcast any of the pre-season games so I never really did get to see him play. Hopefully he can demonstrate how the safety position is supposed to be played.
